To advertise in The CF15 Directory please call 07989 431716 Dear Neighbours, After a spectacular summer of sport & some amazing achievements, the summer sun, what little we saw of it, has well & truly hung up his hat, & at the time of writing this, there is a definite autumnal feel in the air! The lights are being turned on earlier & in some houses the heating is on already. Thoughts are turning from salads & bbq’s to heartier fayre to keep us warm through the colder eves. Halloween will soon be upon us; bringing with it, light hearted games of trick or treat & pumpkin carving; closely followed by sparklers & rockets for Bonfire night…dare I say it, the festive season will then be here! There are already Christmas cards & gift wrap in some shops! The year has gone by in a flash, & has brought about lots of changes. Many new developments have sprung up across CF15, new businesses have opened, & new residents have joined us. Welcome to you all. As usual in this edition there are some recipes for you to try, some ideas for crafts for the children, as well as a mix of editorials, adverts and articles. I am keen to hear from you for a feature in the December/ January edition. I’d like to know your hints & tips for a stress free Christmas! From Christmas craft ideas for the children, ideas for homemade gifts or for tried, tested & loved recipes. Please do send me your ideas either by post or email by the 15th of November. The August/ September edition was proud to support local charity Autism Puzzles, in this edition Karen is a guest writer giving us all an update on how Autism Puzzles is going, and an idea of the exciting forthcoming events schedule! This edition also features an article highlighting a concern many Radyr & Morganstown residents have; speeding & the weight of traffic along Heol Isaf. This is your magazine, so if you have a concern about something in your area & wish to voice it through the pages of The CF15 Directory, please do contact me. Finally I would like to wish you all a pleasant autumn. Best Wishes, Joanna

Report from County Councillor Rod McKerlich:As we contemplate a large housing development in Radyr and to the south of Radyr, it is appropriate to consider how past developments have impacted on the infrastructure of Radyr and Morganstown. Four major housing developments have added about 1200 new homes and we welcomed the residents of these houses without reservation. However our road system is now very full at peak times; our schools are full; pre-school provision is inadequate; dangerous features on our roads are not addressed. As the County Councillor for Radyr and Morganstown, I seek constantly for remedies to these and other problems and I report progress in my monthly newsletters which are published on the local web site; if any individual wants a personal copy please contact me. While our communities have got many new sports and leisure facilities in recent years and we have a new library, necessary improvements to roads and transport have been lacking. It is essential that a development of 7500 new houses (nearly 3 times the size of Radyr and Morganstown) does not go ahead without significant investment to allow the movement of vehicles without jeopardising our people. Parmesan and butternut squash soup
Ingredients • 150g parmesan, (parmigiano - reggiano) with rind • 25g butter • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 1 medium butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks • 900ml hot vegetable stock • 150ml milk • 4 - 6 slices French bread • fresh parsley or thyme, chopped to garnish Prep time:
15 min
Cook time:
30 min
Serves: 4-6
Method 1. Reserve the rind from the parmesan and cut it into chunks, then finely grate the cheese. 2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan, and gently fry the onion for about three minutes, until softened, but not browned. Add the butternut squash, vegetable stock and parmesan rind. Heat until the mixture is just simmering, then turn the heat to low and cook gently for about 20 minutes, partially covered, until the vegetables are soft and tender. 3. Remove the rind from the saucepan, then transfer the soup to a blender or food processor and add most of the grated cheese, reserving about 25g for garnishing. Blend the soup for 15-20 seconds, until completely smooth. Return it to the saucepan and add the milk. Stir thoroughly and reheat until piping hot. Taste and adjust the seasoning. 4. Meanwhile, toast the slices of french bread, sprinkle the remaining parmesan on top and grill until melted. Ladle the soup into warmed bowls, then top each portion with one piece of toasted french bread. Sprinkle with fresh parsley or thyme and a little extra ground black pepper, then serve.
Mozzarella meatballs and spaghetti Ingredients For the meatballs • 500g minced beef • 50g fresh breadcrumbs • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped • 1 tsp dried oregano • 75g mozzarella • 3 tbsp rapeseed oil
For the sauce • 1 small onion, diced • 2 roasted red peppers, (from a jar) • 2 tbsp tomato purée • juice of 1 orange • 200ml beef stock • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 50g stoned green olives, sliced • spaghetti, to serve
Please mention The CF15 Directory when responding to adverts Prep time: 35 min Cook time: 30 min Serves: 4 Method For the meatballs 1. Mix the minced beef with the bread crumbs, garlic, seasoning, parsley and oregano. 2. Mix well with damp hands and make 10-12 balls. 3. Cut the mozzarella into 10-12 chunks. 4. Flatten each meatball and press a piece of mozzarella into the centre. Gather the meat around it and pinch to make sure it is sealed. 5. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry for around 10 minutes, turning occasionally. For the sauce 1. Fry the onion in the pan juices until softened. 2. Add the tomato puree, orange juice, stock and vinegar. 3. Bring to the boil, then using a hand blender, puree the sauce a little. 4. Return the meatballs to the pan and simmer for 25 minutes until cooked through. 5. Just before serving add the olives. 6. Serve with spaghetti.
Apple Plumb Crumble Ingredients For the filling • 675 g Bramley apples, peeled, cored and thickly sliced • 675g Cox’s apples, peeled, cored and thickly sliced • 12 plums, stones removed, quartered • 25g light muscovado sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 tbsp water
For the crumble • 280g self-raising flour • 140g butter, plus extra for greasing • 140g demerara sugar • 70g porridge oats
Method Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4 and grease a 28 x 20 x 5cm baking dish with butter. For the filling: put the apples and plums in the baking dish. Sprinkle over the sugar, cinnamon and water and toss together. Bake for about 10 minutes, until the fruits soften and their juices run. Remove the baking dish from the oven and increase the oven temperature to 200C/gas 6. For the crumble: put the flour, butter and sugar in a food processor and blitz to combine. Remove the bowl from the processor and stir in the oats by hand as they need to remain coarse. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the fruit and bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve with cream, ice cream or custard.

www.cf15directory.com Have YOUR Say…… Progress is inevitable & in the majority of cases it brings with it great things, for example as our area has expanded we have been joined by many new families. However the new developments have raised a safety issue many residents are concerned about. Heol Isaf, the main arterial route through Morganstown & Radyr, has always been a fairly busy road. However recent expansions in housing & businesses in and around the area mean the weight of traffic per day has increased dramatically. Unfortunately the increase in traffic brings the added danger of excess speed & dangerous driving. While the majority of people drive at the correct speed & with regard for other road users & pedestrians, there are the exceptions to the rule who think nothing of increasing their speed above the set limit of 30mph. Many families& children walk the route daily. I have spoken with parents, grandparents &child-minders; all who tell me how concerned they are at the general speed along Heol Isaf. Radyr resident & Councillor, Cllr McKerlich has sent me a copy of the report he has recently submitted to the chief officer for Highways: Junction of Min y Coed with Heol Isaf: No pavement on the west side of Heol Isaf for pedestrians going towards the centre of Radyr; pedestrians, including pupils at Radyr Primary are obliged to cross Heol Isaf at a point where the nearby camera suggests that average speed of vehicles is 45mph. This project was ranked 15th last year but now it is 44th. Heol Isaf: calming is required because traffic speed is high as evidenced by speed disclosing device at Maes yr Awel. Further evidence would come( about traffic heading north) at that point from the speed disclosing device at Cheshire Home but this has not worked for nearly 2 years despite frequent reports on the subject. Cllr McKerlich has initiated this document & is actively pursuing it. As this is such a contentious issue, I feel it important to gather a broader opinion, so why not have your say? Is this an issue that affects you? Do you have suggestions for traffic calming? Do you live elsewhere in CF15 & have a ‘hotspot’ road that you are worried about? I welcome your input, opinion & suggestions. Please email me at haveyoursay@cf15directory. com or write to me at; The CF15 Directory, JA Consultants, 17 Dan-yBryn Avenue, Radyr, CF15 8DD.

Autism Puzzles Taking Autism To The Top! Our Kili Trekkers are training hard and lots of them have lost a lot of weight in the preparation for their climb in February 2013. All of these people are hoping to complete a challenge of a life time, all in the hope of raising as much awareness of Autism and the difficulties that families affected face every day. We are very excited to announce that we have the support of a new sponsor – Viva Media. Marissa Beaumont-Conway is very passionate and supportive and we are looking forward to having her on board. We had a great time at the Lloyds TSB Charity Ball which we attended as Viva Media’s guests. There were some inspirational people there and it was great to celebrate people that are trying to make a positive difference.

FIREWORKS
The first fireworks were probably made in China, around 2,000 years ago. Chinese crackers, as they are known, are still used in China today to celebrate weddings, births and religious festivals - and to scare away evil spirits! Fireworks were used for centuries in ancient Indian and Thai religious ceremonies. Some of the rockets were 8-10 feet long and were attached to bamboo sticks that were 40 feet high. The first recorded fireworks in England were at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486. They gained popularity during the reign of Henry VIII and by Elizabethan times (1558-1603) there was a fireworks master. Queen Elizabeth I created this post so that someone would be in charge of organising firework displays for great occasions. James II even knighted his fireworks master after a particularly excellent show of fireworks at his coronation. The word for firework in Japanese, ‘hanabi’, means ‘fire-flower’. Half of all firework accidents happen to children under the age of 16. The first fireworks recorded in America were set off by an Englishman, Captain John Smith, famous in the story of Pocahontas. Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat as a blow-torch. The world’s largest single firework was set off at a festival in Japan in 1988. The shell weighed over half a tonne and the burst was over a kilometre across. Throwing a firework in a street or public place is a criminal offence, with a maximum fine of 5000 pounds.
Please mention The CF15 info@cf15directory.com Directory when responding to adverts
SAFETY Fireworks can be great fun! Unfortunately, every year, people get hurt because they fool around with fireworks. Last year over 900 people required hospital treatment from accidents involving fireworks. Make sure you’re not one of them by following these few simple rules. Never play with fireworks - They are explosives and can hurt you. Only adults should light or hold fireworks. When you are watching fireworks stand well back. Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode. Fireworks will frighten your pets, so keep your pets safely indoors. If you are given a sparkler: Always wear gloves. Hold it at arm’s length. When your sparkler goes out, DON’T TOUCH IT. It could still burn you, so put it in a bucket of water.

Pili Pala Day Nurseries The Laurels’ Diary Page What a busy couple of months we have had! Busy yet very enjoyable! Our first Birthday was on the 31st August. To celebrate, we had a week of fun and frolics, including a teddy bear’s picnic, cooking and baking day, face painting (done by Sacha, our Deputy Manager, who has her own company Enfys Face Painting) and a fancy dress day. As you can see from the picture of ‘Spiderman’ (a.k.a. Nicola, the nursery Manager) above, it was hard to tell who enjoyed this day the most; the staff or the children? We also had our first visit from Jen, the Radyr Library lady. Jen came to the nursery to deliver a story and rhyme- time session with the children. It went so well and the children enjoyed it so much that Jen has kindly agreed to make regular visits to the nursery. We wasted no time in taking her up on her offer and booked her for the next two months! We hope that the relationship between the nursery

and library will enable more families to make use of their local library, as it is a fantastic resource. It has been such a busy past year that the poor house probably doesn’t know what has happened to it. After a peaceful 100 years, we came along! There is lots of evidence of the fun we have had so far, from sticky fingerprints, a beautiful crayon drawing on the wall in one of the play rooms and, thanks to my son, a lovely tear in the hallway wallpaper. So, we have decided to give the nursery a mini-refurb which will include new wall paper, paint and some new equipment for the garden. We look forward to the end result. As always, if you would like more information about anything contained in this diary entry or about the nursery, please contact Nicola / Sacha on 02920 814 353 or just come and visit us. Rotary Club of Cardiff – City of Llandaff (Formerly Llandaff Rotary Club) Established 1964 President (2011-12): Gerry Ambler. (President, July 1st 2012- June 30th 2013: Malcolm Braun) ROTARY AND THE COMMUNITY - A YOUNG PERSON’S VIEW Question 1: How did you become aware of Rotary? Answer: My cousin invited me to a Rotary Club meeting and meal on board a river restaurant in Christchurch, Hampshire. The company was friendly and welcoming for an evening which was fun and enjoyable. It was some time later that a colleague invited me to come along to his club in Cardiff – again the welcome was fantastic with a group of business people from a wide range of backgrounds. Ages were not an issue and everybody seemed to be enjoying the fellowship. There was a speaker from a charity but there was no pressure to donate. After a few weeks, I was asked if I could spare an hour or so during the week to help with club affairs and it seemed to be a good avenue to go down. Question 2: What was your first impression of Rotary? Answer: A sense of members who were committed to giving “Service before self”. Question 3: What has surprised you most about working with Rotary? Answer: The absolute diversity of the tasks which are regularly dealt with by the club members, not only in the UK but across the world. Question 4: What do you wish that other people knew about Rotary? Answer: You can make a difference to the lives of other people (most of whom you will never meet). It does not cost a fortune to belong and there is an enduring satisfaction in meeting new, like minded people from different backgrounds. Question 5: What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining? Answer: DO IT. Over time you will make lots of friends and enjoy being part of a team, perhaps raise some money and at the end of the day know that you will have made a difference. Question 6: What do you do with your spare time? Answer: Rotary Clubs have a criteria which prioritises commitment to your family, your Business and then to Rotary. Clearly, time spent with my family and friends is important and on occasions, events are planned to include everybody who wishes to be involved. For those active in Business, the club can be surprisingly flexible in accommodating busy peoples’ schedules. Being a member of Rotary is like being part of a huge happy family and it is very much down to being involved to get the most out of it.
