he arts have been referred to as the first language of humans, because even before we could speak, we expressed our thoughts and ideas through art, movement, music, and dramatic play. Lark Keeler The arts inspire us to use our imagination and engage with all of our President, FAEA senses. We introduce our children to the arts by rocking babies to the beat of a song, singing lullabies, tracing and printing little hands in finger paint, and by reading stories using dramatic voices. Early childhood provides such a richness of opportunities for children to grow and explore the arts. From first marks with an extra thick crayon, to singing and moving to “Itsy, Bitsy Spider,” arts experiences help prepare us for future cognitive thinking and developmental skills. Humans have a desire to make marks. We can look to the ancient workings found in the glyphs of cave art to see how humans craved to leave such marks, make meaning, and craft beauty. Parents may know this urge all too well, after discovering caveman-like scribbles on hallway walls from creative toddlers. Built into each of us is a desire and delight when making marks that are uniquely our own. Mark-making (scribble) gives children the chance to practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It is in this very important art experience in which the seeds of handwriting are first planted. Experimentation and investigation, discovery, and curiosity take place in the midst of crayon loops, swirls, zigzags, and shapes. Sensory, verbal, and cognitive learning are engaged when we are immersed in an art experience. As naturally deep thinkers, children do not always have the accessibility of words to express what can be said through the arts. We see this development of investigation and ideation in action when children give us “tours” of their drawings. Children have a terrific sense of narrative when making meaning of their marks, giving story to the art that flows so freely from their fingers. It is opportunities like these, found in arts education, that build skills for reading, writing, and imagination. Whether it is the feel of the materials on the surface of the paper, the urge to express a story or feeling, or investigating an object by looking closely and drawing what is seen, artists of all ages use the tools of mark-making to make meaning and sense of their world in a variety of ways. It is this groundwork that supplies all of us with skills to best approach problem solving, critical thinking, and expression of thought when progressing through academic learning and through life later on as creative humans. Thank you for the important work you do in bringing essential arts education to your students. I hope that your time at conference allows you the freedom and joy of experimentation, investigation, discovery, and curiosity. Enjoy the pleasures of mark-making, pondering, imagining, and savoring all of the textures, sights, and sounds. Delight in being a student once again, and filling your cup with inspired ideas to share with your world. I am so glad you are here.

Dear FAEA Conference Attendees:
T
he Northeast Florida Art Education Association (NEFAEA) and participating art educators of St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) welcome everyone to the 67th Annual FAEA Professional Development Conference. Whether you are attending for the first time or a returning attendee, you will have many opportunities to grow as an art educator during this year’s conference. What has made FAEA conference so amazing in the past remains the same and more. There will be a wide variety of hands-on workshops, speakers on diverse topics, commercial art exhibitors and vendors, and the fabulous Saturday evening “Neon Garden Party.” At the Neon Garden Party, you will be able to enjoy a game of Flamingo Toss, a lively game of Croquet, collaborative art making, dancing, and all kinds of merriment. NEFAEA proudly serves Duval County and its surrounding areas. NEFAEA provides scholarships for teachers to attend FAEA conferences, in addition to other professional development opportunities. NEFAEA also works with local art galleries, The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, and the Cathedral Arts Project to send students to their summer art camps. Teachers have the opportunity through NEFAEA to participate in teacher art shows and professional development. In Duval County Public Schools, students participate in various elementary, middle & high school art shows, the Northeast Florida Scholastic Art Competition, FAEA submissions, and Celebration of the Arts. The St. Johns County School District has long supported comprehensive arts education in all of its schools. In grades K-12, students are able to explore a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, pottery, photography, sculpture, mixed media and digital arts. Art is prominently featured in every school, and students are encouraged to participate in local, state, national, and international shows and contests. Each spring in partnership with the St. Augustine Art Association, we host two separate annual art shows, one for middle schools and one for high schools. SJCSD also supports the St. Johns Centers for the Arts, which are located at R. J. Murray Middle School and St. Augustine High School. We hope that while you are here you will take the time to visit our local museums, beaches, shops, and the many wonderful places to dine. Stop by the NEFAEA table for local information and assistance during the conference. The Northeast Florida Education Association and the St. Johns County School District are pleased to be a part of this year’s FAEA Conference and wish you a marvelous four days. Enjoy,

Stand Up Soft City Lesson Plan for Grades 5–8
Blick Readycut Item #40422
Stand up and say something about your city! Different structures are meaningful in different ways — hospitals help us heal, town halls provide a meeting place, and historic monuments teach us about the past. These self-supporting soft structures display block printed images created by students that highlight the architectural forces within their communities.
