Welcome to the 2021 FMEA Virtual Professional Development Conference!

G

reetings! The planning process for each FMEA conference begins immediately following the previous

conference, and for almost an entire year, many individuals are involved in planning, organizing, and

implementing what will prove to be a most comprehensive professional development conference.

In the planning process, the FMEA staff members, the Conference Planning Committee, and the FMEA

component associations (FBA, FEMEA, FOA, FVA) have been instrumental in creating a foundation of suc-

cess for all conference participants. A large number of volunteers from all component organizations and beyond are also involved in the conference planning and implementation process, and they have spent countless hours working for the benefit of all. I am privileged to have the opportunity to work with so

many outstanding individuals and hope you will join me in letting everyone involved in the planning of

the conference know that we appreciate their hard work and commitment to the advancement of music education!

An exceptional cast of session presenters, performers, and conductors from across the nation will be in

attendance, and a comprehensive schedule of conference activities has been created for the benefit of all. Please plan to attend, learn, and grow professionally from these outstanding individuals.

I wish you all the very best in your conference endeavors and hope you will find your experience reward-

ing, thought-provoking, and inspirational. Have a wonderful time! Sincerely,

FMEA Mini-Concert Hour

H. B. Plant High School Jazz Ensemble Director: Brian Dell The band program at H. B. Plant High School in Tampa provides a myriad of experiences in the performing arts for its students. Performing ensembles include the nationally acclaimed wind ensemble, symphonic band, campus band, jazz band, chamber

ensembles, indoor percussion, football band, and competitive

marching band. The jazz band has consistently earned superior

ratings at both the district and state levels of the FBA jazz MPA. Ensemble performances include the 2019 Essentially Ellington Regional in Orlando and the 2018 demo ensemble for the FMEA Professional Development Conference in Tampa. The H. B.

Plant Jazz Band was named a 2019 National Jazz Band Honors

Commended Winner and 2018 National Jazz Band Honors

Winner through the Foundation of Music Education Mark of Excellence. Members consistently represent Plant High School in the Hillsborough All-County Jazz Band.

Armwood High School Hawk Jazz Ensemble Director: Bradley Esau

Fellsmere Elementary Ukulele Club Director: Sara DiPardo Based in Indian River County, the Fellsmere Elementary Ukulele

Club was founded in 2018 by director Sara DiPardo. Fellsmere Elementary is a long-time Title I school with a high Hispanic

population (84%). Most students come from Mexico, Honduras,

or Guatemala. Even though these students come from Hispanic countries, they do not know many Latin folksongs. The primary goal in Ukulele Club is to learn folksongs from other Latin countries while incorporating ukulele as well. The funding for the

club’s ukuleles was made possible by generous local donations.

The Ukulele Club meets twice a week in the morning before school and is composed of students in third, fourth, and fifth

grades. Students use a school-owned ukulele or purchase their own. The Ukulele Club performs at the school board meeting

during Hispanic Heritage Month, at the local Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival, at the Holiday Cheer Tour around the campus, and at the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

After being dormant for five years, the jazz ensemble at Armwood

High School was restarted in fall 2018. Initially started as an afterschool activity, it became a class

during the school day this past

school year. The performance level

has been high, and the ensemble is the on-call ensemble for various events on campus and in the community.

Solo & Ensemble Vocal Festival where they receive superior ratings in various categories. At the Choral MPA Festival, they

have received straight superiors for the last three years. These students love to sing and realize how important being a part of a choir is. It develops self-esteem, confidence, and the ability

to communicate with each other. There is an elevated sense of

achievement during the rehearsal process when harmonies and the music come together. They truly become a family through Lake Nona High School Symphonic Orchestra

Director: Vincent Conrod The Lake Nona High School Symphonic Orchestra program

consists of 22 students in grades 9-12. The goal of the LNHS Orchestra program is to provide students with as much exposure to standard orchestral literature as possible, with the philos-

ophy that while most students will not pursue a career in music, all students can gain an appreciation and knowledge of music

that will remain with them throughout their lives. The LNHS

Orchestra program seeks to provide as complete an educational

experience as possible to all students, and regularly hosts events geared toward the success of LNHS orchestra students and students in the surrounding schools.

Woodrow Wilson Middle School Jazz Band Director: Jeff Cayer Wilson has historically enjoyed a strong performing arts depart-

ment. The first class play was performed in Wilson’s auditorium in 1925. Traditionally, the performing arts have also included

an orchestra and a band. The first stage band, which included

Sol Fleischman on the drums and Morris Acton on the piano, North Fort Myers Academy Chamber Choir Director: Stacy McDonald The North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts Chamber Choir was formed four years ago under the direction of Stacy McDonald. It is an auditioned choir and has gone from strength to strength

since its conception. The middle school choir takes part in school

concerts and events and is seen throughout the community, especially during Christmas time spreading holiday cheer. They

perform for district school board meetings and the Lee County Sounds of the Season video. They represent the school at the SFR

performed for the students on a regular basis. This stage band

originated in the 1920s and then reunited to entertain once more

at the 50th anniversary celebration for Wilson. One former band

director, Warrend Frederick, served Wilson from 1953 to 1978. During his time at Wilson he composed the Wilson Pep Song, which was sung at athletic events and pep rallies. Through the years, the band and the orchestra have won many awards,

always reputed to be of superior achievement. Wilson Middle

Schedule of Events ON-DEMAND Do the Hustle: Using Concurrent Instruction to Expedite Student Learning and Make Rehearsals Engaging, Motivating, and More Efficient Sponsored by FVA

Presenter: Adam Zrust

Time is a precious commodity, and most teachers would agree there is generally not enough of it. Testing procedures, inclement weather, in-school functions, etc., often hamstring educators from meeting personalized performance standards with student ensembles. “If only I had more time” is a common catchphrase shared among educators, music or otherwise. This session will offer time management solutions with respect to lesson planning and content delivery, and will demonstrate how concurrent instructional techniques (i.e., “hustles,” cues, reminders) can be used to help expedite student learning and save valuable time in rehearsal. Keywords: direct instruction, concurrent instruction, pacing, classroom management, efficiency.

A Celebration of Latin America’s African Heritage Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Vimari Colón-León

The presence of African heritage in Latin American culture is visible in the arts and music of many regions. This presence is so fundamental that Latin American music would not be as we know it today without it. The rich musical heritage that African descendants carried with them was part of the foundation of a new musical culture that mixed African traditions with those of Europe and the Americas. In this session, participants will get practical ideas on how to showcase the interconnection between African and Latin American musical traditions. Through singing, drumming, and dancing, attendees will discover ways in which Afro-Latin American music can be used to encourage collaboration, creativity, and musicianship.

A Practical Score Study Guide to Drive Your Weekly Lessons Sponsored by FBA

Presenter: Douglas Phillips Coordinator: Charles Watford

Effective score study for the busy band director—presented by Phi Beta Mu.

Accommodations! Using Your Creativity to Include All Learners Sponsored by FOA

Presenter: Vivian Gonzalez

In this session participants will learn how to get creative with regular classroom items to create appropriate accommodations to help their special learners access their lessons. CONCERT All-State Popular Music Collective Sponsored by FMEA

Coordinator: David Williams

The Popular Music Collective consists of students in grades 9-12, who auditioned in the following categories: DJ, rapper/hip-hop artist, vocalist, guitarist, bass guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, and other instruments. The Collective focuses on and performs mostly original music created by the students, and it uses a learner-centered pedagogical approach where the students have significant autonomy over the choice of literature performed.

And Still They Rise: Exploring and Advocating for Choral Music by Black Women Composers Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Khyle Wooten

There has been significant advancement in the academic study of choral and orchestral concert music of composers of African descent, but compositions by women composers of African descent have received far less attention. Many of these composers were unable to have their works published or performed, thus creating a considerable void. This presentation will explore select choral repertoire of Black women composers for choirs of various voicings and abilities, engage attendees in singing this diverse music, provide new repertoire resources for conductors and teachers, and ultimately increase awareness of the choral works of this underrepresented group of composers.

Avoiding Autopilot: Embracing Surprises in Conducting and Teaching Sponsored by FVA

Presenter: Elizabeth Hearn

Have you ever arrived at a destination only to realize that you can’t recall how you got there? Or perhaps you failed to enjoy and experience the scenery on your journey? Autopilot mode threatens artistry and productivity in our choral classrooms and in our profession. The danger of this mode is that we teach and conduct without intention or reflection, missing opportunities to embrace surprises along the way. This session will explore practical strategies that will empower teachers and conductors to identify and switch off autopilot mode for themselves and their students. COVID-19 was an unprecedented surprise that shook the music education profession, forcing us out of autopilot mode and into survival mode. What did we learn? What surprises have music educators missed as a result of being in autopilot mode, in doing things the way they’ve always been done? A time of discussion will explore ideas for avoiding the pitfalls of perpetual autopilot mode as a profession and in our classrooms.

On-Demand Building Beautiful Voices: Tools and Principles Sponsored by FMEA

Presenters: Frank Eychaner, John Petzet

Dr. Eychaner and Dr. Petzet will detail dozens of specific tools, exercises, and rehearsal techniques that every choral director and voice teacher can use to build the technique of singers. Utilizing a practical approach, this active session will engage participants in actively demonstrating and practicing the techniques. Participants will leave the session with a generous resource packet of exercises and detailed descriptions of how they can be applied to accomplish specific pedagogical goals. Topics to be addressed include: getting and keeping singers’ attention, physical preparation and posture, breath management, onsets and releases, freedom of articulators, common problems and practical solutions, and much, much more.

Can I or Can’t I? Copyright Basics for Music Educators Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Marshall Haning

Copyright is a topic that has long been of interest to music educators. Copyright laws and regulations are complex, and many teachers mistakenly assume that any use of copyrighted material is permissible as long as it takes place in a school. With the increased use of technology, and especially with the current turn toward distance learning, a clear understanding of copyright and fair use regulations has become even more important to help music educators avoid challenges resulting from copyright enforcement. In this session, attendees will discuss basic principles and guidance related to copyright in the music classroom. Topics will include a brief history of copyright law, current copyright regulations, and governmental guidance regarding specific practices that music teachers may and may not engage in. Special attention will be given to copyright issues related to technology and/or distance learning environments.

Choral Warm-Ups Using Dalcroze Eurhythmics Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Marla Butke

This session will demonstrate a variety of warm-ups for the choral classroom utilizing meaningful movement based on the Dalcroze philosophy. Specifically, warm-ups to increase focus; exercises for breathing, range extension, and part-singing; and scale/solfège activities will be experienced. The goal is to add another element to traditional warm-ups to enhance concentration, to provide variety, and to increase musicality through kinesthetic means.

Classroom Management in Ensemble Rehearsals—It’s All About Our Preparation Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: John Lychner

Classroom management is not only about what happens during the class or rehearsal. As with most things, what happens outside of the class or rehearsal time plays a major role in the flow as well as the academic and artistic outcomes of a rehearsal. This interactive session will explore how choices we make affect classroom/rehearsal management, including choices like what music will be performed, the setup or placement of the performers, what procedures will become habits, and many more. Research-based suggestions for successfully navigating the variety of choices discussed will be provided.

CONCERT FSU University Singers Sponsored by FMEA

Directors: Kari Adams, Kevin Fenton, Michael Hanawalt Coordinator: Steven Kelly

Creating a TraumaInvested Elementary General Music Classroom: Practical Strategies for Elementary General Music Educators Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Melissa Lloyd

Childhood trauma is a pervasive phenomenon among American youth, with lifelong implications for an individual’s physiological, behavioral, social, and emotional well-being. Children who suffer childhood trauma often experience difficulties expressing, sharing, and regulating their emotions in traditional classroom settings, particularly when they are under the tutelage of educators who are unaware of trauma symptomology. Souers and Hall (2019) noted that while many schools, districts, and states have claimed to be trauma-informed, there is a distinct difference between being trauma-informed and trauma-invested. In a trauma-invested classroom, educators are committed to cultivating a safe and nurturing learning environment to foster student achievement (Souers & Hall, 2019). The purpose of this session is to provide elementary general music educators with practical strategies for creating a trauma-invested elementary general music classroom. Techniques regarding classroom setup, management, and instructional approaches will be addressed.

Diversifying the Traditional Music Program: Future Trends Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Jason Stahl

As funding and participation in the arts continue to dwindle, the future of many music programs can benefit from an inclusive approach that blends orchestra, wind band, jazz ensembles, pop/rock groups, choir, and world music ensembles into one setting. A diverse approach can significantly increase enrollment, garner buy-in from the student body, and provide a rich and versatile music education for students at all levels of development. This hybrid model is a reflection of our current global culture, which allows traditional and nontraditional school musicians (like pianists, guitarists, ukulele players, etc.) the opportunity to play and perform together. Mr. Stahl will share tested examples of how this approach can develop performance versatility, theory application, and opportunities for student composition/arranging. Discussions will also include how to establish an advanced program for career-bound, upper-echelon students.

Elementary Essentials for Exceptionalities Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Christine Lapka

Several years ago, I began early childhood and elementary field experiences with students who have a range of abilities. I will share experiences and materials that work for the students with exceptionalities (autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, and communication disorders). After we establish goals and activities that work for students with disabilities, we will then determine how to challenge students who are typical. In the end, we will have plans that will reach a broad range of abilities and learners—differentiated instruction.

Empowering Your Young Female Students: Who Runs the World, Girls Sponsored by FMEA

Presenters: Stephanie DeLuca, Faith Hall, Devan Moore, Victoria Warnet

As our society moves toward the elimination of inequality, we need to do our part in music education to support our young female students and set them up for a successful and rewarding life. This session welcomes teachers of any gender and will focus on how to empower the young female students in your music classes. Some of the topics discussed in this session will include classroom inclusion, eliminating instrument stereotypes, the social factors of teens, leadership roles for students, and how to be your best self and act as a role model for your students. There will be a panel discussion where we discuss powerful experiences that impacted us as young female music students. The session will close with a question and answer session with the panel. Participants will leave with techniques that can be easily implemented in their classrooms to create a more supportive environment for all of their students.

Engaging Non-Rehearsal Activities for the Choral Classroom Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Carlton Kilpatrick

Many directors find themselves focusing on preparing for performances while other musical and educational goals fall by the wayside. Music literacy skills, dictation, composition, improvisation, listening skills, music history, music terminology, and more can all be incorporated into established routines and will enrich your students’ musical experience. This session will demonstrate a variety of activities, many implementing technology, that will engage students. The skills developed by these standards-based activities can deepen understanding of repertoire and relate directly to musicianship goals. Examining intersections between choral music and other curricular subjects can create lasting cognitive connections for students. Participants will receive materials they can put into place immediately in their classrooms and that work well with substitute teachers and student leaders.

Fleming, Didonato, and Hampson: YouTube Master Classes to Improve the Sound of Your Choir Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Austin Thorpe

As choral conductors, we often look up choirs on YouTube to find new repertoire and to be inspired by choirs we admire. Do we also spend time discovering the best singing practices? Do we continue searching for those tips and devices that will breed stunning vocal success for our ensembles? This session will examine master classes presented by Renée Fleming, Joyce Didonato, and Thomas Hampson, and how their artistically based pedagogy can be implemented in the choral warm-up and rehearsal to improve the sound of our choirs.

On-Demand FMEA PRODUCT SHOWCASE Jazz Theory for the Rest of Us Sponsored by Neil Kjos Music Company

Presenter: Dean Sorenson

Jazz has a language all its own, and it is surprisingly similar to what we learned in freshman theory. Different systems of shorthand and performance practice are mysterious to those with limited jazz experience. This session will explain chord symbols and chord/scale relationships in a very logical way that will allow directors to better understand jazz ensemble scores and lead sheets. These concepts can then be immediately applied to rehearsal and performance situations.

Poverty and Gender in the Music Classroom: Moving to Equality Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Tiffany Cox

Identifying the intersectionalities of our students helps to provide them with authentic and impactful music education experiences. This session will focus on how gender impacts the experience of students living in poverty and how the band room and director can adapt to the needs of these students.

Promoting Literacy Through Creative Thinking in Beginning Band Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Barry Hartz

While educators and employers agree that creative thinking is an essential skill in the 21st century, band directors often worry about having insufficient time to teach technique and music reading. When done well, providing students with opportunities to exercise their musical creativity does not need to detract from traditional skills such as instrument technique and reading notation, but can actually strengthen those skills. This presentation will provide practical and time-efficient strategies for engaging students in improvisation and composition within developmentally appropriate parameters in ways that foster audiation, creative thinking, technique, and music literacy. Participants will learn how to incorporate tonal and rhythm patterns, improvising on defined pitches, improvising antecedents and consequences, composing variations on familiar tunes, and composing harmony parts to familiar songs.

Recruiting and Retaining Middle School Students in Title 1 Music Programs Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Samantha Patterson

The vision is clear: Get them in the door, keep them in the classroom, and get them to continue to participate at the next level. This session will focus on procedures, practices, and policies that have proven successful for the presenter for close to a decade for recruiting middle school students into a Title 1 arts program, keeping them involved and interested all three years, building it into a strong arts program, and finally maintaining that involvement as they move into high school. Given the correct mentoring, inspiration, and of course, music selection, any school, regardless of income level, can have a strong arts program. These strategies can be taken by teachers in any stage of their career and easily implemented in time for this year’s round of recruitment.

Rethinking Choir Through Contemporary a Cappella Technology Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Jacob Berglin

While the “traditional” choral model of large-scale performance with one director choosing repertoire and leading rehearsal is well-loved and important in many ways, it is sometimes inefficient in times of crisis, and generally poorly suited for skills such as composition/arranging and overall musical independence. In this session, we will examine how using technology and a contemporary a cappella modality can assist directors in being more flexible and in fostering important skills in their singers. Through a participatory model, this session will combine practical information with opportunities for attendees to explore technologies and techniques on their own devices. Attendees should leave the session with immediate, actionable skills that will allow for more creativity and independence (and fun!) in their transforming ensembles.

Setting Music to Video Using GarageBand Sponsored by Contemporary Media Committee

Presenter: Tosh Sargeant

There’s a saying in the film industry, “music tells the audience how to feel.” Apple’s GarageBand can be used to easily add music to video. This session will walk teachers through simple step-bystep instructions on how to add video to a GarageBand project, tips and tricks for creating music for video, and a few project ideas.

On-Demand Teaching Deliberate Practice: The Missing Fundamental Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Chris Grifa

Teaching students to practice deliberately requires the deliberate teaching of effective strategies. This session will challenge attendees to view practice as a skill, which can be both practiced and improved. The ideas presented in this session are based on current research on practice and my applications of this research with my students. The focus of this session is to help teachers become more deliberate in teaching their students how to practice effectively. Attendees will learn how to create a process for their students to improve their individual practice and how to allow their students to practice practicing through the use of guided practice during rehearsals. Finally, attendees will be introduced to the “levels of practice,” a research-based method of helping students focus their practice to effectively improve their performance level as well as how this concept can be integrated into rehearsals and music learning.

Teaching Strategies for High School Group Piano Classes Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Ricardo Pozenatto

Group piano class is a course where students develop musicianship skills at the keyboard. Additionally, the group piano setting is a great environment where students can develop social skills while sharing music-making. In this session, I will explore the different teaching settings that group piano class enables (pairing, small groups, whole class). Most of these settings are based on the cooperative learning theory, which will be briefly described at the beginning of the session. Following, a series of strategies and activities for the high school level class piano will be shared, providing the class piano teacher with an array of tools in how to approach piano teaching in groups.

The “A” Word: Meaningful Assessment Strategies for Choral Teachers and Students Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Elizabeth Hearn

With increasing pressure to generate individualized student data in our ensembles, the “A” word presents unique challenges, including limitations in rehearsal time, personnel, and resources. The individualized assessment strategies presented in this session are meaningful to students and teachers because they enrich the ensemble experience without taking away from our sacred rehearsal time. These strategies have been used successfully at all levels of choral ensembles, including advanced collegiate choirs. (Yes, the “A” word exists in higher ed, too.) Through demonstration and discussion of best practices, this session will empower choral educators to embrace and value (not dread) the “A” word.

What to Grade, What Not to Grade, and How to Grade It: Best Practices in Grading Grounded in a Standards-Based Grading Philosophy Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Jamie Burg

Grading in a performing arts classroom can be tough. Grades are important because they give value to our class, but too often they don’t accurately reflect what a student knows and what he or she can do. This session will guide you toward creating quality assessments and will offer a quick and easy guide on what to grade, and how to grade it, so that your assessments are meaningful and accurately communicate to all stakeholders. Standards-based and competencybased grading practices will be the foundation for this work. continued

What You Wish You Had Learned in College: Put the Oxygen Mask on Yourself Before Putting It on Others Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Crystal Berner

Tried and true reflections of the “taboo” topics that may not have been sufficiently addressed in college, such as making self-care a priority, behavior management plan development in the first year of teaching, grades and documenting the student-process of learning, dealing with parents professionally, teaching creatively by relinquishing “control,” keeping your passion for music alive in performing ensembles, understanding that time/resources ARE limited, the importance of building bridges in the first five years, and what should go in your “I quit” box. These and other topics will be addressed in this high audience participation required session.

Yin and Yang in Music Teaching and Learning: A Way to Approach Balance Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Victor Fung

Both the concept of yin and yang and the practice of music teaching and learning have a long history. Is there, and should there be, a connection? If so, how? The presenter explains the essence of yin and yang in terms of energy transmission, continuum, nonjudgmental nature, indexicality, complementarity, concomitance, and forward moving. While the concept of yin and yang has inspired philosophers and scholars for millennia and has spread throughout the world, it can be manifested in contemporary practices in music education and can benefit music teachers and learners. The presenter offers a framework for balance in the process of music teaching and learning. Considerations include the nature of the music involved, the roles of the teacher and the learner, the energy level of the activities, and the familiarity level of the musical experiences. Balance could be achieved through a network of yins and yangs in the short and long terms.

SESSION 3 Drawing on the Past to Survive the Present and Guide the Future Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Alice-Ann Darrow Coordinator: Shelby Chipman

Many young music educators have little idea of what public schools were like before some of our greatest landmark legislation. The purpose of this session is to provide a music educator’s personal reflections on the educational changes these legislative events set forth and to describe how this history can provide strength for today and guidance for the future.

The Florida Music Education Association values the broad human

diversity in the state of Florida. We are distraught and frustrated by the continued injustice and violence toward Black people in

our country. Social inequality and violence, in any form, must not

be tolerated in our nation. FMEA sees, hears, and supports the

struggles of our teachers and students in the Black community.

We are with you, and together we can and will do better to end discrimination while advocating for equality.

Effects of ConductingGesture Instruction on Eighth-Grade String Orchestra Students Performance and Response to Conducting Emblems Sponsored by Research Committee

Presenter: Charles Patterson Coordinator: Don Coffman

This study is an investigation of the effects of short-term conducting-gesture instruction on eighth-grade string orchestra students. Comparison was done between conducting-based instruction and modeling-based instruction. Participants were 31 eighth-grade string orchestra students. During five consecutive days, experimental-group subjects (n = 14) received instruction designed to improve recognition and response to conducting gestures. The control group (n = 17) participated in modeling-based instruction of the same musical techniques targeting the conducting gestures (without any conducting explanation). The study used two measures of conducting-gesture recognition: (1) a written examination; and (2) an individual performance examination.

Presenter: Susan Brumfield Coordinator: Luis Rios

Readiness for music reading and writing begins early, through listening, singing, moving, and playing games. The musical development that happens in these early years paves the way for older learners to acquire musical literacy by working through developmentally sequenced steps. Dr. Susan Brumfield has worked extensively in the choosing, transcription, and annotation of songs and rhymes that are just right for singing, playing, reading, and writing in grades K-2. In this session, she will present teaching activities, singing games, and new ways to incorporate a fresh batch of songs into your curriculum, ready to take home and use in your classroom tomorrow.

Our Shared Song: Creating a Choral Collective Through Introspection, Depiction, and Reflection Sponsored by FVA

Presenters: Kari Adams, Kevin Fenton, Michael Hanawalt Coordinator: Carlton Kilpatrick

During this interactive session, presenters will use musical examples to show how a rehearsal process can shift from being “me” (conductor) centered to “we” (choral collective) centered. Conferees will explore three elements of the rehearsal process: introspection (the conductor’s exploration of the score), depiction (gestures and rehearsal activities that provide a window to the possible), and reflection (thoughtful questioning that ignites the imagination and celebrates the contributions of each singer in the choral collective). These elements will outline a process that allows singers to become more engaged, generous, and soulful members of the choral collective. continued

Adults’ Mental Images of Music Sponsored by Research Committee

Presenter: Giulia Ripani Coordinator: Don Coffman

How can we encourage lifelong participation in musical activities? Understanding how adults define and use music at different age levels is crucial to design educational spaces that respond to adults’ changing musical interests and needs. Despite the growing interest in musical adulthood, little research has addressed adults’ musical experiences from a developmental perspective. This session will present results and implications of a study that examined adults’ mental images of music and musical selves across the lifespan. Projective techniques such as drawings and free linguistic associations were used to access participants’ inner thoughts. Echoing new developmental theories, results identified stable and changing elements in adults’ uses of music and definitions of musical selves across the lifespan.

7pm-7:45pm

Creating Community Through Choral Text Sponsored by FVA

Presenters: Carol Krueger, Hillary Ridgley Coordinator: Solangi Santiago

The foundation of choral music is the connection between the music and the text. As a conductor, the study of the music is never complete without the analysis and understanding of the text. In performance, one of the challenges directors encounter is engaging the choir in expressing the text to the audience, and for the singers to invest in the text and music. Creative and practical strategies for engaging singers in expressing the text, understanding and unifying the mechanics of the text, and current research will be explored.

7pm-7:45pm

FMEA PRODUCT SHOWCASE Back to Bach: New Methods for Enhancing Ensemble Musicianship Sponsored by The Bach Initiative

Presenter: Peter Folliard Coordinator: Nicholas Lockey

Intended for directors of all types and levels of instrumental ensembles, Dr. Peter Folliard presents a new method for refining ensemble musicianship through his new text, The Bach Initiative. Folliard begins the presentation by sharing his lifelong relationship with the music of J. S. Bach and his stories about employing Bach’s chorales with professional, collegiate, and secondary ensembles to refine his ensemble’s musicianship. Folliard discusses various areas of musicianship including awareness, intuition, shaping, intonation, articulation/bowing, and voice leading, and shows how a conductor can best address these areas through the study and rehearsal of the four-part chorales of J. S. Bach. Folliard demonstrates, through audience participation/singing and recorded examples, how a conductor can employ this method with an ensemble to more fully develop the musicianship of the ensemble.

Assessing the Correlation Between Student Engagement and Musical Capacity in College Students Sponsored by Research Committee

Presenter: Yangqian Hu Coordinator: Don Coffman

In higher education, one of the major challenges is student engagement. Higher education institutions not only require faculty to have a command of the subject matter, but they must also implement effective approaches to engage their students. In the study field of music in higher education, there has been increasing interest in the influences of music on emotional and cognitive functions. The effects of music could be moderated by people’s music background and their music engagement level. The effects of music and music engagement level are even more important among college students as they continue to be involved in music for their lifetime. The aim of this research is to explore and identify the correlation between student engagement and musical capacity in college. The questionnaire consists of two parts; the first part is to evaluate the participants’ engagement in school, and the second part is the music capacity of participants. The data and analysis will be completed by January 2021.

FMEA PRODUCT SHOWCASE Just Intonation: Help Your Ensemble Hear and Play Better in Tune Sponsored by Yamaha Corporation of America

Presenter: Thomas Bough Coordinator: Valeria Anderson

Playing perfectly in tune requires more than just a tuner! Setting the length of the tuning slide, neck, or string simply minimizes the amount of adjustments the students need to make. However, literally every note they play will need to be adjusted to some degree. The skill of LISTENING and ADJUSTING while playing is the mark of all great musicians, and can be developed and improved by players of any age by tuning against a drone. The ability of the drone to switch between equal temperament and just intonation provides a listening environment more applicable to ensemble performance for the students. Attendees will witness the demonstration of exercises that can easily be applied to their ensemble to help students develop their listening skills while matching pitches perfectly tuned to make the chords and melodies resonate.

Keep on Going: Overcoming Roadblocks to Resilience Sponsored by FBA

Presenter: Mickey Smith, Jr. Coordinator: Tamara Lewis

As a traveling educator and musician, GRAMMY Music Educator Mickey Smith, Jr., has encountered numerous teachers who have taken their craft to higher levels of excellence. And he said he has learned from them. Such high levels of job performance naturally turn into high levels of learning, and the combination of the two creates a harmony between teacher and student, which creates a sound 180 days of instruction. “You quickly see, ‘Hey, this isn’t the only show in town,’” Smith said. “You take ideas, you learn from them, start implementing things, and my classroom gets stronger.” Smith, a three-time GRAMMY Music Educator Award nominee, said he has used his experience to develop Sound 180, a program to help empower teachers and make them more effective, to help people teach uplifted, and to find their joy.

Practical Strategies for Ensemble Motivation and Growth Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Kari Adams Coordinator: Valeria Anderson

Motivating adolescent students can be challenging because of the popular view of music as inborn talent rather than crafted skill. How can ensemble directors keep students engaged in rehearsals and promote practice outside of class? This session will explore how educators can use positive motivation strategies derived from the world of psychology and our teaching experiences to effectively motivate students to participate in ensembles, accept challenges, and practice individually. Teachers will walk away with specific examples of how to give students feedback that will encourage them to see their musical ability as inside rather than outside their control.

Don’t “Crack” Under Pressure! Teaching Adolescent Boys Sponsored by FVA

Presenters: Cathy Montero, Danielle Zier Coordinator: Angela Guira

Oh, the crazy world of the male changing voice. Choral directors are often hesitant and unsure of how to help our boys navigate this rite of passage. But despite our self-perceived inadequacies and limited experiences, we are the experts, and for them it’s all new. We’ve either gone through it ourselves or had boys in our choir who look to us for direction. This is likely our one chance to lead them to form lifelong opinions about singing. Their personal experiences in our classroom will either make them love it, or avoid it at all costs. It is our responsibility to provide them with the tools and guidance to have a successful experience in our choirs and a future that includes music. Cathy Montero and Danielle Zier have had great success in creating and maintaining boys’ choirs in their respective programs. Their choirs of 30+ boys have a great retention rate throughout middle school and even into high school. In this practical session for teachers at all levels, they will provide activities, strategies, and materials backed by experience and research that have been used to grow noteworthy middle school boys’ choirs. Resources will include concepts and activities for teaching music theory and sight reading, warm-ups for better vocal techniques, and time-tested repertoire, all geared toward a developing men’s program.

The Care and Maintenance of Our “Grown-Up” Beginners: Second Semester Tips for Retaining Students After Their First Year of Playing Sponsored by FBA

Presenters: Carol Allen, Jeanie Berry, DaLaine Chapman, Hannah Jennings, Kerry Waldo Coordinator: Richard Davenport

While there is no exact approach for retaining beginners in your program, there are ways to secure a high percentage of them playing their instrument and returning to your class the following year. Maintaining a balance between fun and work, and keeping students engaged during the third nine weeks, is often difficult given the number of distractions the second semester brings. The attention our beginners require during this time is sometimes overlooked as state testing approaches and as the upperclassmen work toward their music performance assessments. This presentation focuses on the importance of paying close attention to our youngest players as they begin their second semester of instruction and what we can do to keep them engaged, interested, and happy—all three ingredients making a recipe for success.

Inherently at higher risk of stress, failure, and dropout, music education students with special needs face compounded issues with little guidance. This discussion panel seeks to explore faculty experiences with creating inclusive and supportive spaces for special needs music education students. Topics will include entrance interviews, field experiences and internships, creating awareness, advising, grappling with uninformed faculty, collaborating with campus resources, and the perspective of a current music education doctoral student and future faculty member with special needs.

Bass-ics: What Every String Teacher Needs to Know About the Bass Bow Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Brian Powell Coordinator: Valeria Anderson

Dr. Brian Powell is a professional bassist and teacher at the Frost School of Music who has more than two decades of experience directing public school and honors orchestras. From these experiences he has witnessed how issues of tone and articulation of the lower strings (which are often unaddressed) can fundamentally transform the sound and unity of an orchestra. This session is for orchestra teachers who want to gain a deeper understanding of how to unlock the potential of their lower string sections, particularly with the double bass. This session will present clear, easy-to-understand strategies that will help your lower strings have a bigger, more focused, pure, even, and resonant sound. Attendees will learn more about the German and French bow and how these strategies apply differently to each. And more important, session members will see clear correlations in how this pedagogy pertains to all string instruments in the orchestra.

FMEA PRODUCT SHOWCASE Do You Hear What I Hear? Lessons Learned From Master Musicians Sponsored by Neil Kjos Music Company

Presenter: Jeff King Coordinator: Marc Decker

As much as we are all teachers, we are, first and foremost, all STUDENTS, called to pass on what we learn to each other. In this session, Texas band director and author Jeff King shares the lessons learned from other master musicians on his 36-year quest to develop exercises for superior tone, flexibility, range, articulation, dynamics, technique, listening skills, and more. Application of these exercises takes place during the “daily drill”—that time between the first note of rehearsal to the working of literature—where students warm up both physically and mentally and where new concepts and skills are introduced and reinforced. What makes this time genuinely effective is thoughtful application to the repertoire being studied. This leads to better music-making in every performance setting, regardless of students’ experience or ability.

The Missing Faces in Music Education Sponsored by FMEA

Presenters: David Cruz, Alicia Romero-Sardinas Coordinator: Valeria Anderson

Research findings suggest there is an underrepresentation of minority students in music education classrooms. There are numerous factors we can consider that contribute to this imbalance as well as hidden biases we may hold when teaching. The music world outside of “school music” has more diverse artists with whom students may identify. The challenge for music teachers is how to merge the students’ music with school music and create a vessel of expression and authenticity to represent our diverse students and their communities. As a result of this session, you will discover how your own students can serve as a guide and play an active role in the learning process.

Flipped Assessments for Secondary Music Ensembles Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Michael Douty Coordinator: Valeria Anderson

For secondary music ensembles, individually assessing students outside of rehearsal time is beneficial to both student learning and ensemble performance. Borrowing insights from flipped classroom strategies (Baker 2000) and competency-based assessment models (Lurie 2011), students can submit video assessments for individualized teacher feedback and work toward musical mastery at their own pace. The increasing availability of smartphones and other devices with a video camera makes it possible for most students to submit assessments from home. Free apps streamline the process. Accommodations are possible for students with access problems. When online/distance learning becomes necessary, ensembles using flipped assessments can smoothly transition to at-home learning. This model has been implemented in middle school band and orchestra classrooms in a Title I school, fostering individual student success and ensemble excellence.

It is common for a young guitarist to show interest in joining the jazz ensemble with little to no experience in the genre. Music teachers often cite feeling underprepared to teach players of this instrument effectively. This session will provide introductory materials for the teacher and student, introducing basic jazz concepts to rock guitarists. Concepts will include basic equipment choices, chord voicings, comping rhythms, fingering choices, and improvisation. Technological materials relevant to jazz guitar will also be introduced. The audience is encouraged to participate in this interactive session. While the presenter will provide eight guitars, attendees are encouraged to bring their own instruments.

Visually Impaired Students: Equitable Inclusion and Access in a Traditional Music Degree Curriculum Sponsored by FCMEA

Presenter: Stacie Rossow Coordinator: Marc Decker

Students with visual impairment and complete blindness have had only two choices if they wanted to pursue a degree in music: have some standard requirements waived or altered or find an institution that deals only with similar students. With increased technology and accessibility, we cannot continue to tell these talented students they need not have the same level of musical literacy, the same standards of achievement, or access to materials as their fully sighted colleagues. These students should be provided the tools to learn to read and understand music just as their sighted peers. This paper session will present the real-world challenges and successes encountered in working with visually impaired students in a traditional collegiate music program, from gaining access to printed scores and working with the student accessibility office to the basics of Braille music notation.

Superior Flutes — Ten Ways to Improve Your Flute Section Today Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Karen Large Coordinator: Jay DeDon

For many music educators, the flute is the most elusive of all wind instruments to teach. The lack of reed or mouthpiece makes it truly unique in the wind band. Dr. Karen Large, assistant professor of flute at FSU, will present 10 pillars of flute teaching that will produce immediate gains in the sound, intonation, and technique of any flute section. Additionally, she will address common pitfalls and how to correct them, host an open Q&A session, and send attendees back to their band rooms with a handout and resources for future reference. Superior flutes are within your reach!

They Did It on Their Own! Teaching Independent Musicianship in Your Large Ensemble Classroom Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Daniel Taylor Coordinator: D. Gregory Springer

Growing students into independent, lifelong/life-wide musicians is a primary goal for many music educators and education organizations throughout the United States. The large ensemble classroom, though, is sometimes criticized as being too product based and director led. This clinic provides strategies (including scaffolded coaching, encouraging student decision-making, and increasing student motivation) that can be used by secondary music teachers to increase self-regulated learning and musical independence. Special emphasis will be given to large ensemble programs that may or may not have access to private instruction through additional staff members.

3pm-3:45pm

Chamber Music — The Secret Ingredient to Better Large Ensemble Skills and Better Students Sponsored by FMEA

Presenters: Osvaldo Gomes, Daniel Hasznos Coordinator: Patricia Gingras

Students engaged in chamber ensemble activities produce better results for their entire music program. Incorporating chamber music into the overall mix of performance offerings is an effective and exciting way to instill strong fundamental performance skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and solid musicianship. Chamber music, distinctly used as a pedagogical process, provides opportunities for students to develop heightened awareness of the finer details of performance. By using a chamber scaled approach, students naturally become sensitive to refinements of tonal concepts, intonation, balance, blend, matching articulation, rhythm, and sense of pulse. By removing the conductor from the process of rehearsal or by empowering students in a collaborative rehearsal/performance model, students gain greater autonomy of musical ideas. An environment that encourages the sharing of ideas provides students an authentic pathway to build self-image, self-esteem, and self-efficacy.

4pm-4:45pm

Skittles Does Not Equal Musical Excellence: Tackling Teachers’ Perception of Problematic Student Behaviors Sponsored by FMEA

Presenter: Pamela Richardson Coordinator: Crystal Berner

As our society changes, so do the needs of our students. No matter how much change takes place, their needs as human beings must be met in order for them to experience musical excellence in our classes. When time becomes a focal point, it is easy to lose sight of the process and the journey as we rush to get a product from the students. Rushing against the clock and placing our faith in intrinsic rewards while dealing with behaviors can lead to missed opportunities to build relationships. In this session, we will tackle teachers’ perceptions about behavior and go over the variables that serve as hindrances in order to shed light on what students really need to flourish.

Congratulations to the 2021 FMEA Award Winners Elementary Music Educator of the Year ROSEMARY M. PILONERO Villages Elementary of Lady Lakes School Nominated by Joani Slawson on behalf of FEMEA Rosemary M. Pilonero has been an elementary music

teacher for 26 years and has spent her last six years

teaching at Villages Elementary of Lady Lakes School in Lady Lake. She taught in New Jersey before moving to Florida in 2006. The Villages Elementary of Lady

Lakes School selected Rosemary as its 2018 Teacher of the Year.

Rosemary truly believes in music for ALL. As part

of the Executive Committee for the Florida Elementary Music Educators Association (FEMEA), she steered the

organization through substantial transformations that would cast a wider net to reach more students, particularly those in underserved areas. Under her leadership,

the FEMEA Regional Honor Ensembles came to fruition and now provide a space and place for wonderfully

talented and devoted elementary musicians through-

Congratulations to the 2021 FMEA Award Winners Exemplary Model Program “SONGBIRD” EVAN POWERS, AVALON MIDDLE SCHOOL Nominated by Paul (Wesley) Roy on behalf of FVA

Evan Powers is the choral director at Avalon Middle School in Orlando. SONGBIRD is a program in which

seventh- and eighth-grade students share music and

establish relationships with elders living with dementia. Following a four- to five-week training period, students are partnered with memory care residents at Encore

at Avalon Park (an assisted living facility). When the students first meet with the residents, they get to know

them through a game of “music detective” using a ques-

tionnaire and the internet. The students learn about what kind of music the residents love and connect to, and then they research and share that music with them. Students

bring recorded music to the residents each week and work to share music (through recordings or singing),

listen to stories, and build relationships. At the end of each of these sessions, the students and facilitators meet

students and elders through shared music experiences, brightening the days of elders living with dementia,

well as the power that genuine human connection and many students feel an urgency to continue volunteering.

Furthermore, it creates awareness among and support from the school’s administrators as they see the community impact and school representation through the

choral program. Finally, it helps students experience a stage of life with which they may not be familiar, and

therefore allows for the opportunity to build the kind of
