conference, and for almost an entire year, many individuals are involved in planning, organizing, and

implementing what will prove to be a most comprehensive professional development conference.

In the planning process, the FMEA staff members, the Conference Planning Committee, and the FMEA

component associations (FBA, FEMEA, FOA, FVA) have been instrumental in creating a foundation of suc-

cess for all conference participants. A large number of volunteers from all component organizations and beyond are also involved in the conference planning and implementation process, and they have spent countless hours working for the benefit of all. I am privileged to have the opportunity to work with so

many outstanding individuals and hope you will join me in letting everyone involved in the planning of

FMEA President’s Concert Wednesday, January 13, 2021 (8pm-9pm) Coordinator: Steven Kelly; Sponsored by FMEA Fleming Island High School Wind Ensemble Directors: James Bruce, Alexander Buck, Mara Rose The Fleming Island High School Wind Ensemble is the top performing ensemble at Fleming Island High School and is primarily under the direction of Mara Rose. The Fleming Island

High School Wind Ensemble has received the Otto J. Kraushaar Award, given to bands that receive a superior in marching, district concert assessment, and state concert assessment for six of the last eight years. The Fleming Island Wind Ensemble has received a rating of superior at District Concert Festival

since the school opened in 2003. Additionally, the wind ensemble has received a superior

at State Concert Festival nine of the last 10

years. In 2019, Ms. Rose was a recipient of the Andrew J. Crew award, through the

Florida Bandmasters Association, which is given to directors that have received superiors at the state level for five consecutive years.

Fleming Island has traveled and performed

throughout the state of Florida and recently performed in London, England, and in Rome, Italy.

Melbourne High School Chamber Orchestra Director: Michelle Eggen The orchestra at Melbourne High School is a 140+ member program featuring five string orchestra classes, a sympho-

ny orchestra, IB Music, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Happy Harmonies, an MHS community outreach group.

The MHS Orchestra seeks to create lifelong musicians who respect and care for the world around them while maintaining a high standard of performance. Consistently

earning superior ratings at district and state music performance assessments, “Mel-Hi” Orchestra students are

well-rounded individuals, striving for personal academic achievement while also participating in various sports,

clubs, and activities on-and off-campus. The orchestra director is Michelle Eggen, cellist and graduate of Florida State University (BME, MME), and the string consultant

is Gary Mousseau, bassist and graduate of University of South Florida (BME).

FMEA Mini-Concert Hour

H. B. Plant High School Jazz Ensemble Director: Brian Dell The band program at H. B. Plant High School in Tampa provides a myriad of experiences in the performing arts for its students. Performing ensembles include the nationally acclaimed wind ensemble, symphonic band, campus band, jazz band, chamber

ensembles, indoor percussion, football band, and competitive

marching band. The jazz band has consistently earned superior

ratings at both the district and state levels of the FBA jazz MPA. Ensemble performances include the 2019 Essentially Ellington Regional in Orlando and the 2018 demo ensemble for the FMEA Professional Development Conference in Tampa. The H. B.

Plant Jazz Band was named a 2019 National Jazz Band Honors

Commended Winner and 2018 National Jazz Band Honors

Winner through the Foundation of Music Education Mark of Excellence. Members consistently represent Plant High School in the Hillsborough All-County Jazz Band.

Armwood High School Hawk Jazz Ensemble Director: Bradley Esau

Fellsmere Elementary Ukulele Club Director: Sara DiPardo Based in Indian River County, the Fellsmere Elementary Ukulele

Club was founded in 2018 by director Sara DiPardo. Fellsmere Elementary is a long-time Title I school with a high Hispanic

population (84%). Most students come from Mexico, Honduras,

or Guatemala. Even though these students come from Hispanic countries, they do not know many Latin folksongs. The primary goal in Ukulele Club is to learn folksongs from other Latin countries while incorporating ukulele as well. The funding for the

club’s ukuleles was made possible by generous local donations.

The Ukulele Club meets twice a week in the morning before school and is composed of students in third, fourth, and fifth

grades. Students use a school-owned ukulele or purchase their own. The Ukulele Club performs at the school board meeting

during Hispanic Heritage Month, at the local Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival, at the Holiday Cheer Tour around the campus, and at the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

After being dormant for five years, the jazz ensemble at Armwood

High School was restarted in fall 2018. Initially started as an afterschool activity, it became a class

during the school day this past

school year. The performance level

has been high, and the ensemble is the on-call ensemble for various events on campus and in the community.

Woodrow Wilson Middle School Jazz Band Director: Jeff Cayer Wilson has historically enjoyed a strong performing arts depart-

ment. The first class play was performed in Wilsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auditorium in 1925. Traditionally, the performing arts have also included

an orchestra and a band. The first stage band, which included

Sol Fleischman on the drums and Morris Acton on the piano, North Fort Myers Academy Chamber Choir Director: Stacy McDonald The North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts Chamber Choir was formed four years ago under the direction of Stacy McDonald. It is an auditioned choir and has gone from strength to strength

since its conception. The middle school choir takes part in school

concerts and events and is seen throughout the community, especially during Christmas time spreading holiday cheer. They

perform for district school board meetings and the Lee County Sounds of the Season video. They represent the school at the SFR

performed for the students on a regular basis. This stage band

originated in the 1920s and then reunited to entertain once more

at the 50th anniversary celebration for Wilson. One former band

director, Warrend Frederick, served Wilson from 1953 to 1978. During his time at Wilson he composed the Wilson Pep Song, which was sung at athletic events and pep rallies. Through the years, the band and the orchestra have won many awards,

always reputed to be of superior achievement. Wilson Middle

School regularly is recognized by FMEA for the high percentage of students enrolled in the music program.

Time is a precious commodity, and most teachers would agree there is generally not enough of it. Testing procedures, inclement weather, in-school functions, etc., often hamstring educators from meeting personalized performance standards with student ensembles. “If only I had more time” is a common catchphrase shared among educators, music or otherwise. This session will offer time management solutions with respect to lesson planning and content delivery, and will demonstrate how concurrent instructional techniques (i.e., “hustles,” cues, reminders) can be used to help expedite student learning and save valuable time in rehearsal. A Celebration of Latin America’s African Heritage Sponsored by FMEA

The presence of African heritage in Latin American culture is visible in the arts and music of many regions. This presence is so fundamental that Latin American music would not be as we know it today without it. The rich musical heritage that African descendants carried with them was part of the foundation of a new musical culture that mixed African traditions with those of Europe and the Americas. In this session, participants will get practical ideas on how to showcase the interconnection between African and Latin American musical traditions. Through singing, drumming, and dancing, attendees will discover ways in which Afro-Latin American music can be used to encourage collaboration, creativity, and musicianship.

The Popular Music Collective consists of students in grades 9-12, who auditioned in the following categories: DJ, rapper/hip-hop artist, vocalist, guitarist, bass guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, and other instruments. The Collective focuses on and performs mostly original music created by the students, and it uses a learner-centered pedagogical approach where the students have significant autonomy over the choice of literature performed.

And Still They Rise: Exploring and Advocating for Choral Music by Black Women Composers Sponsored by FMEA

There has been significant advancement in the academic study of choral and orchestral concert music of composers of African descent, but compositions by women composers of African descent have received far less attention. Many of these composers were unable to have their works published or performed, thus creating a considerable void. This presentation will explore select choral repertoire of Black women composers for choirs of various voicings and abilities, engage attendees in singing this diverse music, provide new repertoire resources for conductors and teachers, and ultimately increase awareness of the choral works of this underrepresented group of composers.

Avoiding Autopilot: Embracing Surprises in Conducting and Teaching Sponsored by FVA

Have you ever arrived at a destination only to realize that you can’t recall how you got there? Or perhaps you failed to enjoy and experience the scenery on your journey? Autopilot mode threatens artistry and productivity in our choral classrooms and in our profession. The danger of this mode is that we teach and conduct without intention or reflection, missing opportunities to embrace surprises along the way. This session will explore practical strategies that will empower teachers and conductors to identify and switch off autopilot mode for themselves and their students. COVID-19 was an unprecedented surprise that shook the music education profession, forcing us out of autopilot mode and into survival mode. What did we learn? What surprises have music educators missed as a result of being in autopilot mode, in doing things the way they’ve always been done? A time of discussion will explore ideas for avoiding the pitfalls of perpetual autopilot mode as a profession and in our classrooms.

Can I or Can’t I? Copyright Basics for Music Educators Sponsored by FMEA

Copyright is a topic that has long been of interest to music educators. Copyright laws and regulations are complex, and many teachers mistakenly assume that any use of copyrighted material is permissible as long as it takes place in a school. With the increased use of technology, and especially with the current turn toward distance learning, a clear understanding of copyright and fair use regulations has become even more important to help music educators avoid challenges resulting from copyright enforcement. In this session, attendees will discuss basic principles and guidance related to copyright in the music classroom. Topics will include a brief history of copyright law, current copyright regulations, and governmental guidance regarding specific practices that music teachers may and may not engage in. Special attention will be given to copyright issues related to technology and/or distance learning environments.

Choral Warm-Ups Using Dalcroze Eurhythmics Sponsored by FMEA

This session will demonstrate a variety of warm-ups for the choral classroom utilizing meaningful movement based on the Dalcroze philosophy. Specifically, warm-ups to increase focus; exercises for breathing, range extension, and part-singing; and scale/solfège activities will be experienced. The goal is to add another element to traditional warm-ups to enhance concentration, to provide variety, and to increase musicality through kinesthetic means.

Classroom Management in Ensemble Rehearsals—It’s All About Our Preparation Sponsored by FMEA

Classroom management is not only about what happens during the class or rehearsal. As with most things, what happens outside of the class or rehearsal time plays a major role in the flow as well as the academic and artistic outcomes of a rehearsal. This interactive session will explore how choices we make affect classroom/rehearsal management, including choices like what music will be performed, the setup or placement of the performers, what procedures will become habits, and many more. Research-based suggestions for successfully navigating the variety of choices discussed will be provided.

University Singers, founded in 1948 by Dr. Wiley Housewright, is the premier undergraduate touring choir at Florida State University. The auditioned choir consists of students majoring in music and other degree programs. During its rich history, University Singers has performed with remarkable musicians Simon Halsey, Krzysztof Penderecki, Bobby McFerrin, and Sir David Willcocks. Additionally, University Singers has been invited to perform at national and regional conventions of the College Music Society and the American Choral Directors Association, including performances at national conventions in 2007 and 2013.

Creating a TraumaInvested Elementary General Music Classroom: Practical Strategies for Elementary General Music Educators Sponsored by FMEA

Childhood trauma is a pervasive phenomenon among American youth, with lifelong implications for an individual’s physiological, behavioral, social, and emotional well-being. Children who suffer childhood trauma often experience difficulties expressing, sharing, and regulating their emotions in traditional classroom settings, particularly when they are under the tutelage of educators who are unaware of trauma symptomology. Souers and Hall (2019) noted that while many schools, districts, and states have claimed to be trauma-informed, there is a distinct difference between being trauma-informed and trauma-invested. In a trauma-invested classroom, educators are committed to cultivating a safe and nurturing learning environment to foster student achievement (Souers & Hall, 2019). The purpose of this session is to provide elementary general music educators with practical strategies for creating a trauma-invested elementary general music classroom. Techniques regarding classroom setup, management, and instructional approaches will be addressed.

Diversifying the Traditional Music Program: Future Trends Sponsored by FMEA

As funding and participation in the arts continue to dwindle, the future of many music programs can benefit from an inclusive approach that blends orchestra, wind band, jazz ensembles, pop/rock groups, choir, and world music ensembles into one setting. A diverse approach can significantly increase enrollment, garner buy-in from the student body, and provide a rich and versatile music education for students at all levels of development. This hybrid model is a reflection of our current global culture, which allows traditional and nontraditional school musicians (like pianists, guitarists, ukulele players, etc.) the opportunity to play and perform together. Mr. Stahl will share tested examples of how this approach can develop performance versatility, theory application, and opportunities for student composition/arranging. Discussions will also include how to establish an advanced program for career-bound, upper-echelon students.

Elementary Essentials for Exceptionalities Sponsored by FMEA

Several years ago, I began early childhood and elementary field experiences with students who have a range of abilities. I will share experiences and materials that work for the students with exceptionalities (autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, and communication disorders). After we establish goals and activities that work for students with disabilities, we will then determine how to challenge students who are typical. In the end, we will have plans that will reach a broad range of abilities and learners—differentiated instruction.

Empowering Your Young Female Students: Who Runs the World, Girls Sponsored by FMEA

As our society moves toward the elimination of inequality, we need to do our part in music education to support our young female students and set them up for a successful and rewarding life. This session welcomes teachers of any gender and will focus on how to empower the young female students in your music classes. Some of the topics discussed in this session will include classroom inclusion, eliminating instrument stereotypes, the social factors of teens, leadership roles for students, and how to be your best self and act as a role model for your students. There will be a panel discussion where we discuss powerful experiences that impacted us as young female music students. The session will close with a question and answer session with the panel. Participants will leave with techniques that can be easily implemented in their classrooms to create a more supportive environment for all of their students.

Engaging Non-Rehearsal Activities for the Choral Classroom Sponsored by FMEA

Many directors find themselves focusing on preparing for performances while other musical and educational goals fall by the wayside. Music literacy skills, dictation, composition, improvisation, listening skills, music history, music terminology, and more can all be incorporated into established routines and will enrich your students’ musical experience. This session will demonstrate a variety of activities, many implementing technology, that will engage students. The skills developed by these standards-based activities can deepen understanding of repertoire and relate directly to musicianship goals. Examining intersections between choral music and other curricular subjects can create lasting cognitive connections for students. Participants will receive materials they can put into place immediately in their classrooms and that work well with substitute teachers and student leaders.

As choral conductors, we often look up choirs on YouTube to find new repertoire and to be inspired by choirs we admire. Do we also spend time discovering the best singing practices? Do we continue searching for those tips and devices that will breed stunning vocal success for our ensembles? This session will examine master classes presented by Renée Fleming, Joyce Didonato, and Thomas Hampson, and how their artistically based pedagogy can be implemented in the choral warm-up and rehearsal to improve the sound of our choirs.

Implementing Music Technology in Upper Elementary Grades Sponsored by FMEA

Do you want to implement music technology emphasizing popular music? By blending general music approaches, students can gain ownership of the procedures necessary to create their music. What if conditions are not ideal (e.g., not enough equipment)? We will show how to utilize limited resources so students receive adequate time on task. Adapting the same lesson plan for different students’ achievement levels can be difficult. We can help you craft and simplify music tech objectives for that purpose. We will also explain how to change pace across the music tech curriculum, taking advantage of other general music activities that can be blended with technology. Developing students’ attitudes, opinions, perspectives, and interests can facilitate their learning. We will show affective objectives and the activities necessary to achieve them. Finally, we will demonstrate the use of evaluation instruments using NAfME’s music technology standards for assessment and refinement of your curriculum.

In this active session, Dr. Eychaner will explore practical application of the research and psychology of why moving singers are more relaxed, have improved communication with audiences, and report higher levels of enjoyment of their choral experience. Eychaner will share dozens of specific ways that movement can be used in rehearsal and performance to improve technique, understanding of singing principles as well as the experience of audiences. Topics to be explored include movement in warm-ups, pedagogical gestures and why they work, what movements to use and why, being informed by dance, how movement informs tempo and groove as well as common challenges with movement and how these challenges can be overcome. Promoting Literacy Through Creative Thinking in Beginning Band Sponsored by FMEA

While educators and employers agree that creative thinking is an essential skill in the 21st century, band directors often worry about having insufficient time to teach technique and music reading. When done well, providing students with opportunities to exercise their musical creativity does not need to detract from traditional skills such as instrument technique and reading notation, but can actually strengthen those skills. This presentation will provide practical and time-efficient strategies for engaging students in improvisation and composition within developmentally appropriate parameters in ways that foster audiation, creative thinking, technique, and music literacy. Participants will learn how to incorporate tonal and rhythm patterns, improvising on defined pitches, improvising antecedents and consequences, composing variations on familiar tunes, and composing harmony parts to familiar songs.

Recruiting and Retaining Middle School Students in Title 1 Music Programs Sponsored by FMEA

The vision is clear: Get them in the door, keep them in the classroom, and get them to continue to participate at the next level. This session will focus on procedures, practices, and policies that have proven successful for the presenter for close to a decade for recruiting middle school students into a Title 1 arts program, keeping them involved and interested all three years, building it into a strong arts program, and finally maintaining that involvement as they move into high school. Given the correct mentoring, inspiration, and of course, music selection, any school, regardless of income level, can have a strong arts program. These strategies can be taken by teachers in any stage of their career and easily implemented in time for this year’s round of recruitment.

Rethinking Choir Through Contemporary a Cappella Technology Sponsored by FMEA

While the “traditional” choral model of large-scale performance with one director choosing repertoire and leading rehearsal is well-loved and important in many ways, it is sometimes inefficient in times of crisis, and generally poorly suited for skills such as composition/arranging and overall musical independence. In this session, we will examine how using technology and a contemporary a cappella modality can assist directors in being more flexible and in fostering important skills in their singers. Through a participatory model, this session will combine practical information with opportunities for attendees to explore technologies and techniques on their own devices. Attendees should leave the session with immediate, actionable skills that will allow for more creativity and independence (and fun!) in their transforming ensembles.

Teaching students to practice deliberately requires the deliberate teaching of effective strategies. This session will challenge attendees to view practice as a skill, which can be both practiced and improved. The ideas presented in this session are based on current research on practice and my applications of this research with my students. The focus of this session is to help teachers become more deliberate in teaching their students how to practice effectively. Group piano class is a course where students develop musicianship skills at the keyboard. Additionally, the group piano setting is a great environment where students can develop social skills while sharing music-making. In this session, I will explore the different teaching settings that group piano class enables (pairing, small groups, whole class). Most of these settings are based on the cooperative learning theory, which will be briefly described at the beginning of the session. Following, a series of strategies and activities for the high school level class piano will be shared, providing the class piano teacher with an array of tools in how to approach piano teaching in groups.

Yin and Yang in Music Teaching and Learning: A Way to Approach Balance Sponsored by FMEA

Both the concept of yin and yang and the practice of music teaching and learning have a long history. Is there, and should there be, a connection? If so, how? The presenter explains the essence of yin and yang in terms of energy transmission, continuum, nonjudgmental nature, indexicality, complementarity, concomitance, and forward moving. While the concept of yin and yang has inspired philosophers and scholars for millennia and has spread throughout the world, it can be manifested in contemporary practices in music education and can benefit music teachers and learners. The presenter offers a framework for balance in the process of music teaching and learning. Considerations include the nature of the music involved, the roles of the teacher and the learner, the energy level of the activities, and the familiarity level of the musical experiences. Balance could be achieved through a network of yins and yangs in the short and long terms.

Research findings suggest there is an underrepresentation of minority students in music education classrooms. Flipped Assessments for Secondary Music Ensembles Sponsored by FMEA

For secondary music ensembles, individually assessing students outside of rehearsal time is beneficial to both student learning and ensemble performance. Borrowing insights from flipped classroom strategies (Baker 2000) and competency-based assessment models (Lurie 2011), students can submit video assessments for individualized teacher feedback and work toward musical mastery at their own pace. The increasing availability of smartphones and other devices with a video camera makes it possible for most students to submit assessments from home. Free apps streamline the process. Accommodations are possible for students with access problems. When online/distance learning becomes necessary, ensembles using flipped assessments can smoothly transition to at-home learning. This model has been implemented in middle school band and orchestra classrooms in a Title I school, fostering individual student success and ensemble excellence.

It is common for a young guitarist to show interest in joining the jazz ensemble with little to no experience in the genre. Music teachers often cite feeling underprepared to teach players of this instrument effectively. Visually Impaired Students: Equitable Inclusion and Access in a Traditional Music Degree Curriculum Sponsored by FCMEA

Students with visual impairment and complete blindness have had only two choices if they wanted to pursue a degree in music: have some standard requirements waived or altered or find an institution that deals only with similar students. With increased technology and accessibility, we cannot continue to tell these talented students they need not have the same level of musical literacy, the same standards of achievement, or access to materials as their fully sighted colleagues. These students should be provided the tools to learn to read and understand music just as their sighted peers. This paper session will present the real-world challenges and successes encountered in working with visually impaired students in a traditional collegiate music program, from gaining access to printed scores and working with the student accessibility office to the basics of Braille music notation.

Growing students into independent, lifelong/life-wide musicians is a primary goal for many music educators and education organizations throughout the United States. The large ensemble classroom, though, is sometimes criticized as being too product based and director led. This clinic provides strategies (including scaffolded coaching, encouraging student decision-making, and increasing student motivation) that can be used by secondary music teachers to increase self-regulated learning and musical independence. Special emphasis will be given to large ensemble programs that may or may not have access to private instruction through additional staff members.

Students engaged in chamber ensemble activities produce better results for their entire music program. Incorporating chamber music into the overall mix of performance offerings is an effective and exciting way to instill strong fundamental performance skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and solid musicianship. Chamber music, distinctly used as a pedagogical process, provides opportunities for students to develop heightened awareness of the finer details of performance. By using a chamber scaled approach, students naturally become sensitive to refinements of tonal concepts, intonation, balance, blend, matching articulation, rhythm, and sense of pulse. By removing the conductor from the process of rehearsal or by empowering students in a collaborative rehearsal/performance model, students gain greater autonomy of musical ideas. An environment that encourages the sharing of ideas provides students an authentic pathway to build self-image, self-esteem, and self-efficacy.

When time becomes a focal point, it is easy to lose sight of the process and the journey as we rush to get a product from the students. Rushing against the clock and placing our faith in intrinsic rewards while dealing with behaviors can lead to missed opportunities to build relationships. In this session, we will tackle teachers’ perceptions about behavior and go over the variables that serve as hindrances in order to shed light on what students really need to flourish.
