n some ways, CFF is a lot like the children we champion. Our days are filled with doing, learning, and growing. Nearly 300 CFF staffers do their jobs throughout Delaware with the highest regard for the children and families we serve and for the community as a whole. Part of that service is learning about and mastering new and innovative programs that are proven and effective. As our work unfolds in the community, we grow in the rich relationships that develop with our clients and by expanding our services into new avenues of care.

DOING

This year we’re doing more with our Red Clay Community Schools Initiative thanks to a U.S. Department of Education Grant. This five-year grant of $2.4 million gives CFF an opportunity to build on our existing work at Shortlidge and Warner Elementary Schools and to test a new model of service: the Shortlidge-Warner Achievement Zone (SWAZ). Two Community Connectors will work closely with targeted groups of parents and their children to develop “Achievement Plans.” This plan is designed to promote early readiness and academic achievement for students and to create stable supports and enrichment for parents. Connectors will work

with parents in the targeted groups to identify needs and barriers, set family goals, encourage behaviors that support academic outcomes, and connect them with promising and proven strategies to support success. They will stay connected to these families over time, checking in to see if needs change. Two Service Navigators will support the efforts of the Connectors, and they will also work with our Community Schools Site Coordinators and school staff to identify students and families in need of additional support. Navigators will work to ensure that members of the school community have access to the resources that they need to achieve success.

LEARNING

Children & Families First values education and learning opportunities, so we were honored to be selected to participate in an intercontinental three-year project: Change In Mind, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, through our membership in the Alliance For Strong Families and Communities. With an

emergent industry focus on how toxic stress from adverse childhood experiences (ACE) can actually affect the structure of the developing brain, CFF is joining with nine additional agencies in the United States and five in Canada to infuse, align and accelerate brain science research into nonprofit/non-governmental agency practice, policy and systems. Applying the results of this brain science research broadens our understanding of how adverse childhood experiences create a need for our services. In addition, it broadens our ability to provide system-wide care that can reverse the detrimental changes in the brain and prevent the perpetuation of these adverse experiences in future generations.

GROWING

THE CENTER FOR GRIEVING CHILDREN

A subsidiary of Children & Families First

Throughout its long history in Delaware, CFF has adapted quickly to an ever-changing landscape of community issues and needs. Sometimes that has presented an opportunity to grow by merging with an existing agency already at the forefront in their field. This year, we were presented with a wonderful opportunity to do just that. For 26 years, a small but mighty organization, Supporting Kidds, has been helping children and their families cope with grief from the loss of a parent, guardian or sibling. We’re pleased to let you know that in November 2015 Supporting Kidds became a subsidiary of Children & Families First. It’s an ideal match because we share a simple mission to help children who are hurting. Supporting Kidds provides a compassionate pathway to healing for grieving children and their families. As CFF continues to do life-changing work in the community, learn about the most effective programs and practices, and grow in step with the needs of Delaware’s children and families, we are so thankful that YOU are part of our support system.

Nina was addicted, pregnant and living in a transitional house for offenders. She’d been arrested for theft and drug offenses. Reluctantly, she became a client in our Healthy Families America program (HFA). HFA would help her through pregnancy, birth, and keep helping until the baby turned three. One of their toughest clients, her HFA nurse had trouble believing she had any interest in being a mother at all, let alone a good one.

HEALTHY BABIES Nurse Family Partnership and Healthy Families America She was angry, arrogant and cynical, and had long ago lost all support from her family. Nonetheless, she stayed in the program and, as months passed, Nina changed. She learned what it meant to trust and be trusted. When her daughter was born, she was immediately head over heels in love with her. Nina has come a long way. She has a job. Her child is in daycare, and she has her own home. Not long ago, Nina began making some important phone calls. When her HFA nurse asked what made them important, she said, “I’m apologizing for my behavior. You helped me become a better person.”

POSITIVE PARENTING Strengthening Families Program Still, Carole loved them and didn’t want to lose them. She wanted life to be better and in her huge mother’s heart knew that it could be. So, as a last resort, she enrolled in CFF’s Strengthening Families Program (SFP). It wasn’t easy getting eight people to sessions, but for fourteen weeks, Carole and all seven children attended every night of class–not missing even one. Midway through, SFP staff noticed that the children had become less combative and far less disrespectful. Carole practiced her new SFP skills and as she spent more individual time with each child, those relationships became more caring. Her husband realized that he’d been part of the problem. Carole’s newly-learned parenting skills brought peace and calmness to their home. Today, Carole is quick to say that SFP saved her family.

since first grade. They’ve shared snacks and dolls, favorite songs, and even test scores. Now, they sit on the stoop and, through nervous giggles, share personal stories about boyfriends and intimate relationships. Some of it is a little dreamy or just a guess.

Around the same time, young mom Shayna gave birth to twins–a boy and a girl. Because of substance abuse, Shayna had already lost parental rights to her older children. She wouldn’t be permitted to take her twins home. Babies Corey and Cassie were discharged into the loving care of Ty and Naomi. For the last two years, the Rogers have been ideal foster parents even opening their home to visits from the children’s parents. But now, it’s clear their dad isn’t really interested and once again, Shayna has lost all parental rights. Hopefully, adoption is in the future of this family story. Ty and Naomi keep telling us how lucky they are to parent these children. They may not realize it yet, but Corey and Cassie are the lucky ones!

SUPPORTING TEENS: ARC Unfortunately, much of it is very wrong. For adolescent boys and girls, this “wrong” information can be costly to their health and self-esteem. Luckily, and just in time, the girls began CFF’s ARC (Adolescent Resource Center) education sessions at their school. ARC travels through Delaware teaching elementary, middle, and high school students about puberty, abstinence, healthy relationships, responsible decision-making, teen pregnancy, goal setting, STI’s and birth control. Girls and boys are getting the right information at the right time throughout their school years. Now when Jackie and her friends get together, there’s still a lot of giggling, but no more guessing.

pecial events continue to be an effective way to raise awareness about and funding for CFF. Throughout the year, we offer a variety of special events that assist CFF in building a broader base of individual donors which in turn, helps increase annual giving. In 2015, our events collectively raised more than $125,000. Thanks to our committees and event chairs, Sherry Brilliant and Jessica Bain for helping to make that happen!

His anger was so overpowering he left a trail of holes in walls and broken furniture at home, and he wore the physical scars from the fights he instigated. Using drugs since he was 11, he stole anything he could to feed his habit, and had fallen way behind in school. For years, teachers, relatives, and friends asked, “What’s wrong with you, Marco?” He couldn’t answer because he didn’t know. When she found him unconscious, blood running from his wrist, Marco’s grandmother called 911 and prayed for a miracle. It’s been three months since Marco became a resident at Seaford House. Nobody there asks what’s wrong with him. Instead, his therapists want to know what happened to him. Finally, this is a question Marco can answer. This is the beginning of healing.
