Where neighbors create legacies

LET’S TALK People often talk about the seasons of life. Just like the weather, our lives are constantly changing. For me, I’m transitioning to an empty nester as my two youngest boys started college this year. For you, it may be new babies or grandbabies, graduation or retirement, or a new job or big loss. In this issue of the Legacy Newsletter, you’ll read about how The Community Foundation is here to serve the community and the residents here across those many seasons. We talk about our youngest residents’ development and a program designed to support those providing them with high-quality care. You’ll find an insert featuring the names and faces of students who have received scholarships to benefit them in the coming year. We share about two interns who shared their summer with us as they begin to build their own careers. And, we share the story of one man’s life-long passion for orchids and his desire to know their preservation will continue forever. From preschool to high school to lifelong learning, we grow and change throughout the seasons of our lives. Change is guaranteed. While The Community Foundation may grow and change over time, one thing will remain constant - we will be here to serve Muncie and Delaware County today, tomorrow, and always.

arol Johnson, director of United Day Care Center located in downtown Muncie, has spent her career in early childhood. Like most childcare centers across the community, United Day Care has faced many challenges since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some centers shut down in March of 2020. Like United Day Care, those that stayed open quickly modified their operations, adding unexpected expenses to traditionally tight budgets. As centers began to reopen, they also faced additional costs by providing staff with appropriate personal protective equipment and added classroom supplies to follow the Centers for Disease Control guidance. Additionally, many centers have reported a significant staffing shortage as workers choose to stay home for their health and safety. continued on page 2

were significant. In late summer 2020, IU Health Foundation invited community foundations to apply for funds to address local needs through the Community Impact Investment Fund. The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County submitted a request to benefit the local early childhood education field. “Access to early childhood education and safe childcare is a key to our community reaching a place of recovery and a more resilient future,” said Kelly K. Shrock, president of The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County. “The Community Foundation is uniquely positioned to help find and bring outside funding into our community to meet the needs today and position our community better for the future.” “The Early Childhood Community is facing so many challenges,” said Carol. “As with all other businesses, we are short-staffed. In addition, there are not enough people applying with the training and education needed for centers to meet requirements for Paths to Quality levels 3 and 4.” The Community Foundation recognizes the importance of early childhood development for young people in our community. Since 2013, The Community Foundation has funded the BY5 Early Childhood Initiative as a supporting organization through operational support. The organization aims to transform our community by connecting Kindergarten readiness to economic success. BY5 increases awareness of the importance of early learning and supports families, ensuring access to high-quality early learning opportunities. Working closely with BY5 to identify centers with critical needs, The Community Foundation, through the support of the Funders Forum, awarded $2,000 to each of eight childcare centers across the community for emergency needs in May of 2020. Centers could use the funds however they needed. Most used them to offset the cost of additional cleaning supplies, personal protective gear, and modified play and learning activities. Through additional conversations with BY5 and early childhood care providers, it became apparent that the needs in this field

The Community Foundation was awarded $205,000 from IU Health and an additional $25,000 in matching from Early Learning Indiana. The funding has been redistributed to four childcare centers to meet their most critical needs and to BY5 to develop a Childcare Provider Resource Program. The Childcare Provider Resource Program identifies needs and provides opportunities to all direct childcare providers in the community. An assistant director of childcare resources has already begun to host monthly provider calls to strengthen relationships among childcare providers and help inform BY5 of the most pressing needs. Through the program, BY5 will be able to offer desired training for local early childhood professionals, support centers as they work toward Paths to Quality Level 3 and 4 certifications, purchase common curricula for all Paths to Quality Level 3 and 4 childcare providers, and meet other needs as they arise.

The amount of brain development in children in their first five years sets the foundation for their future,” said Missy Modesitt, executive director of BY5. “Bringing resources into our community today to lift our childcare workers and increase and improve the care options available is vital to a better community tomorrow.”

A LIFE-LONG PASSION PROTECTED IN PERPETUITY What is important to you? Do you care about a specific organization or have a passion for a cause? Russ Vernon, the founder of the Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank Fund, has a passion for orchids. Russ explains that he didn’t have much choice in the matter when it comes to his love for orchids. Both his parents and grandparents enjoyed gardening and even farmed. Russ used to save his allowance so he could buy cacti at the local Woolworths. And when he was just 12 years old, he began growing his first orchid. After earning a degree in horticulture from The Ohio State University, Russ became the curator for the Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank in 1973, located at Ball State University. During his time there, Russ worked tirelessly to establish an orchid collection for the greenhouse. He explained, “I decided to point in the direction of a conservation project.” The collection is still located at Ball State University. It is housed within the Dr. Joe and Alice Rinard Orchid Greenhouse.

“That’s the goal of doing anything: to give it the support it needs to become better than it is,” Russ continued. The Community Foundation manages designated funds, benefiting specific programs and organizations, and field-of-interest funds, benefiting broad community causes that match donor passions. Let’s talk about what is important to you and if The Community Foundation can be your partner in achieving your charitable goals. To learn more, contact Kelly K. Shrock, president, at 765-747-7181 or kshrock@cfmdin.org.

The collection proved to be a huge success. During Russ’s time at the greenhouse, he managed to trade orchids with botanical gardens from Philadelphia, Ontario, and even the Kew Gardens in England! And to continue to support this collection, he decided to establish a fund through The Community Foundation.

And so, because I have a lot of emotional currency in the collection, I decided to set up this fund,” said Russ.

Russ established the Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank Fund, a designated fund that benefits the orchid collection. Russ explains that he created the fund as a way of ensuring the collection’s preservation. Because the fund is endowed, the orchid collection will see benefits now and into the future.

THANK YOU BRIDGET AND MEAGHAN Bridget Junker and Meaghan McCarter served as interns this summer for The Community Foundation. Bridget, Communications Intern, is a senior public relations major at Ball State University. Bridget interviewed donors to capture and share their stories of giving. Meaghan, Community Leadership Intern, earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Ball State University. Meaghan researched and interpreted legislation, interviewed community partners, and identified advocates and key stakeholders for a project focused on neighborhood revitalization efforts related to rehabilitating meth contaminated homes.
