LEGACY

Let’s Chat

In our community, there is something for everyone. From county fairs and open recreation to worldclass museums, highquality entertainment, and fine dining, Muncie and Delaware County has it all.

Just like our community, The Community Foundation has something for everyone. We are a grantmaker and scholarship giver, a partner for charitable neighbors, and a community leader providing connections, insight and support. We are here to serve the whole community.

This summer, the Foundation has been present at community events all across the county. We hope you have had the opportunity to say hello to our staff or board at a farmer’s market, summer concert, or other special event. If not, we would love to hear from you about your dreams for the community. Our door is always open. Let’s chat.

Committed to Community

For Dave and Deb Heeter, Muncie isn’t just a place to live—it’s a community where they’ve raised family, grown friendships, built careers, and made an impact through their service.

Inspired at a young age by her mother’s involvement in nonprofit work, Deb has continued to volunteer. Dave’s journey into philanthropy began during his career at Mutual Federal Savings Bank, where community responsibility was a core value. Today, he serves on a variety of nonprofit boards in the community, including the Board of The Community Foundation.

“Initially, we gave our time,” Dave explains. “Now, we’re in a position to give financially, which allows us to make a different kind of impact.” Their support has extended to many organizations, including the YWCA of Central Indiana, Ball State University, Muncie Community Schools, Heart of Indiana United Way, the YMCA of Muncie, and of course, The Community Foundation.

The YMCA of Muncie holds a special place in the Heeters’ hearts. Deb served the organization professionally, while Dave has fond childhood memories of Camp Crosley, managed by the YMCA. Their children participated in youth sports, and Dave and Deb continue to use the Y’s resources to maintain their physical health. So, supporting the YMCA’s Capital Campaign for a new facility was an easy decision.

It’s a challenge match to encourage others to give, ensuring that the YMCA can continue to serve our community today, tomorrow, and always.”

As a Foundation Board Member, Dave sees firsthand the importance of creating a legacy that supports community needs long into the future.

“It’s a challenge match to encourage others to give, ensuring that the YMCA can continue to serve our community today, tomorrow, and always.”

Earlier this year, a special matching opportunity became available for unrestricted funds at the Foundation. Capturing this match, Dave and Deb established the Heeter Family Fund which will support the Foundation’s Community Grants program. Their decision to establish a named unrestricted fund at The Community Foundation was driven by a desire to ensure their impact endures.

In late 2023, the Heeters announced a $100,000 endowment gift in their campaign pledge. This gift will both support the facility construction today and help sustain the YMCA forever. The generous gift benefits the YMCA of Muncie Fund at The Community Foundation and serves as a match to encourage others to give.

“We wanted to do something impactful,” Deb explains. “Our gift is not just a one-time donation.

Reflecting on their journey, Dave and Deb remain optimistic about Muncie’s future. “Muncie has faced challenges, but our community has always risen to the occasion,” Deb reflects. “Together, we can ensure that Muncie remains a place where people want to be.”

In late 2023, The Community Foundation received a matching fund grant to triple all gifts to unrestricted funds. Donors like you contributed more than $1,000,000. Lilly Endowment Inc. matched that with more than $2,000,000. Thank you for helping us meet the match!
