Where neighbors create legacies

LET’S TALK For nearly a decade, I have served as the caretaker of The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County. As I look back on this time, I would like to share some highlights from my experience.

$6.9 MILLION GIFT CELEBRATES A LEGACY OF GRANTMAKING The MutualBank Charitable Foundation establishes The Mutual Legacy Fund

I have been fortunate to work with great team members over the years. I have great confidence in the current staff and their ability to bridge my departure to bring the next leader up to speed. As a team, we have shared the story of the Foundation, allowing more people to work toward a better quality of life for Muncie and Delaware County. Since 2014, the community and world have experienced changes. The Foundation remained a strong support system through market rises and falls and the pandemic. Honoring the Foundation’s rich history and traditions while remaining relevant to the needs of today has allowed us to spot the trends and opportunities in the philanthropic industry and make those our work. I led the organization as we grew the endowment to keep pace with the economy through prudent investment and fund raising. This year, we received the single largest gift in the history of the Foundation. We recognized and operationalized good grantmaking practices to enhance our ability to serve nonprofit organizations and the community. I have worked closely with passionate community volunteers and board members, who guided me as I stepped into the leadership role at the Foundation. The next leader will be fortunate to have these same supports as they continue to move the Foundation forward. It has not only been an honor and privilege to serve the community through my work at The Community Foundation; it has been a dream job. Thank you, Delaware County, for giving me a chance to tend the eternal flame.

Kelly K. Shrock President

The Pat Botts Memorial Build was one of many projects funded by the MutualBank Charitable Foundation. The Mutual Legacy Fund will continue the legacy of community support.

T

he MutualBank Charitable Foundation has made an impact in this community and beyond. Organized in 1998, the MutualBank Charitable Foundation was substantially funded with nearly $4.5 million through Mutual’s initial public offering. Since 1999, the foundation has granted almost $7 million to nonprofit organizations aligned with the bank’s footprint across Indiana. Nearly 80 percent of those dollars have impacted Delaware County. “Continuing the legacy of giving by the MutualBank Foundation is important, and we believe The Community Foundation is the partner to ensure that can happen in perpetuity,” said R. Donn Roberts, Chairman of the MutualBank Charitable Foundation. continued on page 2

The Mutual Legacy Fund was established at The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County in June with the transfer of assets from the MutualBank Charitable Foundation. The MutualBank Charitable Foundation will continue its work through this fund without the need to manage its own independent foundation. The gift from the MutualBank Charitable Foundation of $6.9 million is the largest single gift ever made to The Community Foundation. “The Community Foundation has built a reputation as a charitable partner in Muncie and Delaware County,” said Kelly K. Shrock, president of The Community Foundation. “We are grateful to have the trust of the MutualBank Charitable Foundation and to be able to hold these assets for the community.” The MutualBank Foundation was established to support charitable initiatives aligned with MutualBank and the communities it called home. Grants were primarily focused in the areas of economic development, education, healthcare, and the arts. The MutualBank Charitable Foundation was also a big supporter of United Ways. As MutualBank grew through acquisitions, the foundation’s reach expanded, but the focus remained steady. Grants were awarded to organizations throughout the Bank’s statewide footprint. “For over 20 years, we believe the foundation did exactly what it was designed to do,” said Dave Heeter, President of the MutualBank Charitable Foundation. “We always maintained our focus on what we needed to do and made sure those organizations most critical to our communities had resources to meet those needs. Partnering with The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County allows the assets created in the Bank’s legacy community to remain in this community.”

to The Community Foundation to establish the Mutual Legacy Fund before June 30, 2022. For the next ten years, the Mutual Legacy Fund will be a field of interest fund focused in the areas of education, economic development, health care, and community betterment, with a preference for support in Muncie and Delaware County, Indiana. A committee of former MutualBank Charitable Foundation Board members or their designees will recommend grants to The Community Foundation Board of Directors. After ten years, the committee will sunset, and the fund will remain named but become unrestricted to be responsive to changing needs in the community. MutualBank Charitable Foundation Chairman Donn Roberts continued, “With an initial contribution of $4.5 million, grants over 20 years of $7 million, and a gift to the Community Foundation of $6.9 million, we are immensely proud of the legacy of the MutualBank Charitable Foundation. We’ve seen the power of The Community Foundation, and we’re excited about that.” It will not take long to see the impact of the MutualBank Charitable Foundation continue through the Mutual Legacy Fund. The first grants awarded from the new fund will be announced in early 2023. Detailed information on how nonprofit organizations may apply will be available later this year.

Over the last year, The Community Foundation’s president, Kelly K. Shrock, has met with the Board of Directors of the MutualBank Charitable Foundation to share information about the opportunities and challenges of transferring assets to The Community Foundation compared with continuing to maintain an independent foundation. In early 2022, as the foundation board became more comfortable with transferring their assets to a fund at The Community Foundation, senior program officer Marcy Minton joined the conversation to discuss details of grant administration. The MutualBank Charitable Foundation fulfilled all current commitments and transferred all remaining assets

LEAVING A LEGACY WITH A GIFT OF LIFE INSURANCE

T

he Community Foundation is here today, tomorrow, and always. Donors can give gifts today, and donors can decide to make a future gift by joining the Legacy Society. Members of our Legacy Society have shared that the Foundation has been included in their estate plans. The most common way to make a legacy gift is through a bequest in your will, but did you know there are many ways to give to The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County? Life insurance provides a unique opportunity to make a substantial, costeffective gift to The Community Foundation. While there are many ways to use life insurance to fulfill charitable goals, the simplest and most common method is to make a charity the beneficiary of the policy.

NAMING A CHARITY AS BENEFICIARY

2

Using a Change of Beneficiary form from the life insurance company, you can make The Community Foundation the policy’s sole beneficiary. You can also make the Foundation a percentage beneficiary while leaving the rest of the proceeds to your heirs. This gift is easy and flexible, as you can make changes in the future if your circumstances or goals change. continued on page 3

OTHER WAYS TO GIVE A beneficiary designation is not the only way to make a gift of life insurance. You can also:

• Donate a paid-up policy.

In many cases, the after-tax cost of this generous gift is only a fraction of the benefit provided to us, and you would qualify for an income tax charitable deduction equal to the policy’s replacement value or your basis in the policy, whichever is less.

• Donate an existing policy that is not yet paid up. This would require you to make annual gifts to us to pay the premiums. These annual gifts are, of course, tax-deductible.

• Buy a new policy and transfer ownership to us.

This method would require you to make annual gifts to us to pay the premiums. These annual gifts are, of course, tax-deductible.

• Transfer a policy to a charitable remainder trust.

This giving option provides many tax and financial rewards. The trust will pay an income for life to your beneficiaries. At the death of the trust beneficiary, all remaining proceeds pass to us. A charitable remainder trust lets you deduct the present value of our remainder interest as a charitable contribution.

Would you like to talk more about leaving a gift of life insurance or other ways you can become a member of The Community Foundation’s Legacy Society? Talk to Kallie Sulanke, community engagement officer at the Foundation, by calling 765-747-7181, or your professional advisor, for more information about leaving a lasting gift in your estate plan.

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION IS GROWING Thanks to the generosity of neighbors across our community, The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County has seen impressive growth. At the end of 2021, Foundation assets reached an all-time high of $88 million. These assets are here to support the community today, tomorrow, and always. Growth in assets has led to the need for added capacity for The Community Foundation, including increases in staff size and physical space. In June, the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation identified and purchased a property and building to serve as the organization’s new home. Later this summer, The Community Foundation will relocate its offices from the Muncie Power Products building at 201 E. Jackson to the former USI building at 302 E. Jackson.

Our new building allows us to continue contributing to the vibrancy of downtown.

“Keeping The Community Foundation in downtown Muncie was a priority as the search for expanded space began,” said Trent Dowling, Chair of the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation. “Our new building allows us to continue contributing to the vibrancy of downtown.” Since 2015, the Foundation staff has grown from five employees to eight. A ninth position will be added later this year. This growth in personnel aligns with a 50 percent increase in grantmaking and growth of assets of more than $30 million over the same period.

The Community Foundation is pleased to welcome two new team members.

Joel Brumley Joel Brumley, program officer, works closely with nonprofit organizations partnering with The Community Foundation. Joel brings to The Foundation nonprofit experience as well as experience in agriculture, natural resources, education, and outreach through experiences with Purdue Extension and the University of Illinois Extension, public school teaching, and county Soil and Water Conservation District work. “I am happy to be working for an organization that I greatly admired through several interactions on the job as Youth Development Educator and County Extension Director for Purdue Extension – Delaware County,” said Joel. “I also feel very fortunate to be able to re-ignite many relationships that were developed throughout the community during my time at Purdue Extension and Delaware County 4-H.”

Rachel Spodek Rachel Spodek, communications administrator, oversees gift entry for The Community Foundation and will support other external communications. Rachel is a Muncie native who brings administrative and communications knowledge to The Foundation. “I am so thrilled to join the team at The Community Foundation and have the opportunity to serve the community that has given me so much over the years,” said Rachel.
