SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM & PROCESS W hat is yo u r d r e a m f or you r f u t u r e ? Are you a dedicated student? Have you overcome considerable obstacles? No matter what your talents, abilities and passions, the Community Foundation wants to help you pursue your higher education dreams. The Community Foundation of NCW is home to over 80 funds that award scholarships to help students pursue their dreams and goals at colleges, universities and trade or technical schools after high school graduation. These scholarship funds were established by caring donors who have a commitment to higher education and wish to provide opportunities and assistance to worthy students. HOW TO APPLY / DEADLINE You must download the application from our website at www.cfncw.org. See the cover page “Application Instructions” on the application for more specific details of how to apply and what to include. Applications must be postmarked by or delivered to the Foundation office by their application due date. Due dates vary; be sure to note carefully when your scholarship application is due. Each scholarship is unique - the following icons indicate what level of student is eligible to apply for the scholarship:

APPLYING FOR MORE THAN ONE SCHOLARSHIP Review this booklet for eligibility requirements and then apply for all the scholarships for which you qualify. Using the on-line, fill-in application form on our website makes it easy to apply for multiple scholarships. The “Application Instructions” give more details on how to do it. Remember: separate applications with complete attachments are required for each one. APPLICATION REVIEW Every application is reviewed by members of the Community Foundation’s volunteer Selection Committee. The application is reviewed first for eligibility as the Community Foundation must adhere to the specific eligibility criteria established by scholarship fund donors. After review, scholarship recipients are evaluated on an objective and competitive basis considering academic and nonacademic factors such as financial need, leadership, community service, and special circumstances. DETERMINING FINANCIAL NEED Because financial need is a factor in all but two of our scholarships, the Community Foundation looked for an equitable way to access need among applicants with a variety of family financial situations. Applicants are required to provide the Estimated Expected Family Contribution number calculated by completing the FAFSA or the online FAFSA4caster. Please see Page 3 of this brochure for more details on the Statement of Financial Need and the FAFSA4caster. AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT / PAYMENT We will contact every applicant by mid-May. Specifics about which scholarship award and the amount is announced at graduation ceremonies or awards nights. Scholarships are always paid directly to the school. You will be given a packet with redemption instructions at the time the award is announced. Once we receive the required signatures and documentation, we schedule payment. Our goal is to send payments by August 1.

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL NEED Fre que n t l y A s ke d Q u e s t i on s WHY HAS THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ADDED THIS REQUIREMENT? When donors establish scholarship funds at the Foundation, they tell us the criteria that is most important to them. The selection committees then search for applicants that most closely match that criteria. The majority of the donors choose to make financial need one of the criteria. Our selection committees require a consistent method of evaluating financial information among applicants. The Community Foundation found the FAFSA4caster to be an easy and time effective tool for applicants and it gives the committees the information they need. WHAT IS FAFSA4CASTER? FAFSA4caster is not an application for aid; it’s a planning tool. It’s an online tool to help college-bound students and families anticipate college costs before officially applying for federal student aid. It provides an estimate of federal student aid eligibility by instantly calculating an estimate of the Expected Family Contribution - the indicator used to estimate financial strength. WHY NOT JUST REQUIRE THE OFFICIAL FAFSA FORM? Two reasons: 1) Timing. The FAFSA guidelines require your application not be submitted before January 1 and then you must wait for the results. It’s too close to the Community Foundation’s February 15th deadline. 2) Many students won’t need to fill out the entire FAFSA form because they won’t be applying for federal financial aid. WHAT INFORMATION DOES FAFSA4CASTER PROVIDE? With the FAFSA4caster, you will be able to see what college might cost depending on the type of school you plan to attend. If you plan to attend a four-year public school, it shows the types of federal student aid that might help cover that and provides examples of aid awards showing in-state and out-of-state costs. Finally, FAFSA4caster shows any estimated financial need that remains after the estimated aid amounts and Expected Family Contribution are taken into account. WHAT OTHER BENEFITS ARE THERE? Parents of younger students can use it to receive early estimates, create scenarios based on future earnings, and to establish college savings strategies. WHAT DOCUMENTATION DO I INCLUDE WITH MY APPLICATION? A copy of the page that verifies the Estimated Family Contribution you entered on the application’s Financial Statement page is required. Be sure to write in your name if it’s not printed on the page. ARE THERE OTHER CALCULATION TOOLS I CAN USE INSTEAD? Yes. Feel free to use the tool that works best for you as long as you provide documentation of the Estimated Expected Family Contribution. HOW TO ACCESS THE FAFSA4CASTER Visit www.studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa/estimate and select ‘FAFSA4caster’. Prepare to answer questions about your family financial status and your college plans.

SCHOLARSHIP TIPS & RESOURCES T i p s fo r C o m pl e t i n g your S cholar s hip Application and E s s ay Organize your surroundings and your time. Make sure you have collected the necessary documents before you begin your application process. Try to keep your documents organized and schedule a time to work on the application when you will not be distracted by outside surroundings or commitments. This will help to avoid mistakes and provide better clarity for writing your essay. Do not use covers, staples, or print double sided. Include only what is requested. Do not attach photos, editorials, etc. that are not requested. Doing so is viewed as inattention to detail, so be sure you only include what the application and criteria indicate. Stay on topic. Make sure you focus on communicating your experiences that are only relevant to the scholarship criteria. If one of the scholarship requirements is music, focus on addressing your experience with music - not backpacking, for instance, or other irrelevant activities. Use descriptive examples in your essay. A writer’s mantra is “show, don’t tell”. Remember this as you are writing your essay. Describe your experiences and how they have impacted you and/or your community. “I worked with Habitat Humanity” says much less than “I worked with a team to build a home that now provides shelter for a family of five. I realized that I can help others and help create a better community.” Scholarship reviewers want to get a sense of who you are, where you come from, and the goals you are planning to achieve. Proofread your application. Take the time to proofread your application materials - did you miss any important notes? Did you spellcheck? Do you have all of the documents the application requires? Taking the time to review your materials can make or break your chances of receiving the award. Even better: ask someone else to proof your application, too. Keep a copy. Be sure to copy your completed scholarshp packet and keep a copy for yourself. If your application is misplaced, having a copy makes it easy to resend promptly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Must be enrolled at the 4-year university in the fall of 2013. CONTINUATION Must demonstrate a successful academic year and maintain a 2.0 GPA to keep the scholarship in place the second year.

Marlene & Henry Bauer Scholarship

APPLICATION Due February 15 NO. OF AWARDS One AMOUNT $4,000 (paid over 4 years) ELIGIBILITY Graduating senior of a Chelan, Douglas or Okanogan county high school or a nontraditional student (adult returning to college) who will attend a community college as a full-time student; must be pursuing a career in business, marketing, management, accounting or other business related field minimum 2.5 GPA; demonstrates financial need. IMPORTANT NOTE: Must be enrolled at a community college in the fall of 2013. CONTINUATION Continuing as a full-time student in a business related major and maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA are required to keep the award in place in subsequent years.

Lee Bofto Honorary Scholarship

APPLICATION Due February 15 NO. OF AWARDS One or more AMOUNT Determined by committee (will distribute $800) ELIGIBILITY Graduating senior of Wenatchee High School who has participated in athletics or served the WHS athletic department in some way; minimum 2.5 GPA and passed the WASL or equivalent exam; demonstrates financial need. OF AWARDS One or more AMOUNT Determined by committee (will distribute $10,000) ELIGIBILITY Open to transfer, non-traditional and graduate students that have completed the minimum credit hours to be considered a third year student at Washington State University; will attend WSU majoring in studies that directly relate to agriculture issues (may include majors outside the College of Agriculture, Human and National Resource Sciences as long as your future work will directly impact the broad community of agriculture); demonstrates potential to impact agricultural advancements as evidenced by professor recommendations; demonstrates commitment to their studies as documented by GPA, classroom performance and any direct work experience in an agriculture related industry; demonstrates financial need; preference will be given to applicant from Central Washington defined by Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Ferry and Grant counties. Lauren Ludeman Memorial Scholarship
