Better Together Annual Report 2011
COMMUNITY FOUNDATI ON OF N ORTH C E NT RA L WA S H I NG TO N
Message from the Chair One of the greatest benefits of being part of the Community Foundation of North Central Washington is knowing first-hand how our communities are being impacted by philanthropy. The region we serve is large, but one commonality is the love for our surroundings. We live here for the four seasons, the mountains, the rivers and lakes. We care about our environment and our neighbors. Our nonprofit community works hard to assure that the greatest needs are being met in every way. Whether through children’s programs, arts and culture, environmental protection, education, or health and human services, CFNCW works with nonprofit organizations to provide resources for success. Through our Community Grants Program and Nonprofit Practices Institute, CFNCW strives to strengthen our nonprofits that are making such positive impacts in our communities. Whether you are a donor, a grantee, or a community resident, I hope you find our annual report conveys the great work being done across the region. I would like to extend a special thanks to our generous donors - without you, none of this would be possible.
Mary C. Murphy, CFNCW Board Chair
Our mission is to grow, protect, and connect charitable gifts in support of strong communities. We work in four basic areas: 1) making grants to strengthen and support local nonprofit organizations; 2) advancing philanthropy at all levels of giving; 3) raising awareness of local charitable needs and giving opportunities; 4) managing the investments of our community’s charitable endowment. The Community Foundation of North Central Washington (CFNCW) is a charitable community trust organized as a nonprofit in 1986 from the sale proceeds of nonprofit Chelan County Medical Service Corporation. Originally the Greater Wenatchee Community Foundation, the foundation began with approximately $2.1 million in assets. Today, CFNCW manages over $43 million in assets in over 400 individualized funds supporting charitable causes in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties. Over $8 million has been invested throughout NCW through grants and scholarships distributed by CFNCW. CFNCW provides flexibility through tailored services that help individuals and families pursue their charitable dreams conveniently, effectively, and with maximum tax benefits. CFNCW is a collection of philanthropic funds created by donors who want to give back to their community for general charitable purposes or for a particular purpose - some during their lifetime, some by bequest. They all impact our community by supporting causes that work to make our communities safe, healthy, diverse, and protected for generations to come. 2

Establish a Fund with CFNCW The Community Foundation of NCW is for people who care about making this part of the world a more wonderful place to live, to learn, to work and raise family. No one knows exactly what our communities’ needs will be in 20, 50 or 100 years, but we believe that tomorrow’s local leaders will need substantial charitable resources to respond adequately to the issues of the day. Donors to the CFNCW want to make a real difference with their philanthropy and they know the Foundation has the ability to help them do just that. Individuals, families, organizations or businesses may create a named fund with a minimum gift of $5,000. Contributions can be made at any time, adding gifts when it is to your best advantage. It’s quick and easy to establish a fund at the Community Foundation—even if the gifts are complicated such as gifts of stock or real estate. And the best part is: our administrative fee is just 1%. Whether you want to be a part of grantmaking, establish a scholarship, or have charitable intent but not sure how to determine the most need, our professional staff can help acheive your charitable goals today and forever.

Rebuilding Together, Wenatchee Clara has Turners Syndrome, a chromosomal abnormality that causes her significant vision and hearing problems. She has taken in and raised her grandchild, and since her husband’s passing has lived on a nominal income. Despite setbacks, Clara is strong and proud of her homeownership. While she does her best to make ends meet and care for her home, she could not afford much needed repairs. Through a grant from CFNCW, Rebuilding Together was able to take care of the plumbing and caulking needs in her kitchen and bathroom, Before After painted and repaired some deteriorating siding, and installed two new entry doors that provided her more security in her neighborhood, which is considered high-crime. Three others like Clara have benefited from repairs that now provide a safer environment for themselves and their families.

The UVC provides recreation and social activities for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. They coordinate activities that help individuals function successfully in their communities and increase acceptance and appreciation from others. Each year in June, UVC hosts a Theatre Camp and performs for the public. UVC executive director Terry Anderman received an email from an audience member that read: “I just had to contact you and let you know that while in Leavenworth my granddaughter and I attended the Jungle Book production you did and to our surprise, you gave us a GIFT! We live in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and thought this would be similar to one of the high school productions or summer theatre - we could not stop smiling or crying because of the pure innocence that we saw that evening.” The grant received from the Community Foundation will allow the UVC to continue providing memorable activities and meaningful social connections while encouraging appreciation and diversity in our communities, regardless of ability.

CFNCW is committed to being our region’s nonprofit capacity builder. In 2006 our Board of Trustees allocated 10% of the unrestricted grant budget to regional capacity building activities. Since then, we partnered with the Icicle Fund and together have planned and produced capacity and skill building workshops, trainings, conferences and events designed to engage and enhance our region’s nonprofit professionals and volunteers. These are some of the events we held in 2011.
2011 NPI Summit
May 23 | Campbell’s Resort, Lake Chelan The annual NPI summit is a day-long conference with sessions that provide best practices, innovative ideas, resources and tools to our nonprofit workforce. Some of the sessions at the 2011 summit included: • Endowments 101 • Avoiding the Doghouse: Common Legal Issues for Nonprofits • Grant Seeking Basics • Planning to Deliver • Lessons from the Field: NPO Accountability • How to Avoid Legal Pitfalls: Tips for Success in Nonprofit HR Management • Ways to Improve Your Nonprofit’s Success Using Consultants • What Donors Want • Using Data to Build Your Case • Using Trends Data to Determine Needs • Gift Planning Philanthropy • Got Grants? Your Guide to Securing Federal Grants Attendees also got to “Meet the Funders” - representatives from various funding organizations shared important insight about their funding practices: what they look for, pitfalls to avoid, and tips for making projects shine above others. And finally, an “Expert Series” providing the opportunity to hear from leaders and visionaries from popular industries share trends, research data, and hot topics relevant to the mission and purpose of many nonprofits.
Survey Says! Here is what some of the attendees had to say about the NPI summit: “Thank you to CFNCW for their pursuit of excellence in serving the non-profits within NCW.” “A+! Todd is one of the best speakers EVER at the NPI. Bring him back every year. Each non-profit needs to attend his session!” 12
“I am not able to attend these types of trainings outside the area. An opportunity to access non-profit training in our own region is a huge benefit. I am looking forward to the expanded offerings in the future.”

Investing in Our Future Leaders CFNCW received a record number 972 scholarship applications in the spring of 2011 requiring the help of many people—134 to be exact! There were 67 committees, comprised of 134 volunteers and board trustees, who were responsible for examining the applications. "Receiving this amazing acknowledgement is a dream come true," said Fredy Cortez, recipient of the Melonye Shurtz Memorial Scholarship. "When I first started school in the Wenatchee Valley, college for me was just a farfetched illusion. Through my years at Eastmont High School, I have discovered my full potential to succeed and thanks to these scholarships, my future college career is assured." Donors who create scholarship funds establish the specific criteria for their awards. The committees must consider these requirements and stipulations when awarding certain scholarships, for example the Melvin P. 'Mel' & Lyndell Crowder NCW Memorial Horticulture Scholarship, which was awarded to Jorge Zavala. "Both my father and mother work in the field of agriculture as seasonal laborers and have Fredy Cortez worked in Wenatchee for almost Melonye Shurtz Memorial Scholarhisp 16 years," Jorge said. "Knowing LeMaster/Auvil Scholarship how much my parents have sacrificed on a daily basis inspires me to become an example for my younger siblings and also to show my parents how much I appreciate what they have done for me." Jorge said he plans on obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from Washington State University, and, when complete, will move back to Wenatchee to work in agriculture.
Jorge Zavalas Melvin P. “Mel” and Lyndell Crowder NCW Memorial Horticulture Scholarship Harry and Kathern Lovejoy Scholarship
"Agriculture is a big part of my everyday life," Zavala says, "so when I return, I will go above and beyond to insure that agriculture prospers in my community. Thank you again for providing this scholarship. It is because of people like you that my educational dreams will come true."
