Welcome to Once Upon A Time benefiting the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation governed by a volunteer board of eighteen diversely qualified directors and operated day-to-day by a very skilled staff based in Hernando, Mississippi.

In 2003, shortly after its establishment, the Foundation distributed a meager $250 to charitable programs in a small corner of our state. The Foundation’s adept leadership, however, had larger plans. Over the years, the Foundation continued to grow financially and geographically, which exponentially increased its impact. In 2016, and due to your support, the Foundation distributed $1.8 million to 162 grantees, programs, and scholarships across eleven counties in Northwest Mississippi and beyond. Those recipients include programs for early childhood education, courses teaching life skills, after-school programs, the arts, community health programs, museums, schools, families in need, and many more.

Your attendance tonight not only helps the Foundation pay for its operational costs, it also provides you a great opportunity to learn more about the Foundation and what it does. Very soon you will hear messages from our President, board members and those individuals and entities being honored for their inspirational and charitable accomplishments. Please feel free to request additional information about the Foundation from any board member, staff member, or volunteer or visit www.cfnm.org.

On behalf of the Foundation’s board of directors and its staff please enjoy yourself, the auctions, awards, and entertainment. We look forward to your support of the Foundation in 2018 as we continue to connect people who care with causes that matter. Sincerely, Joe Azar, Jr. Chairman of the Board Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi

2018 STAR OF HOPE Sela Ward Award-winning actress Sela Ward is, at heart, a small-town Mississippi girl. She grew up in Meridian before heading out to the University of Alabama, where she was Homecoming Queen and a cheerleader for Coach Bear Bryant’s championship teams. After graduation, she moved to New York and started a career in advertising but soon embarked on a successful modeling and television commercial run with the Wilhelmina Agency. A move to Los Angeles catapulted her into the world of acting where she has found success. She appeared in films such as “Nothing in Common,” “The Fugitive”, “Gone Girl” and most recently as President of the United States in “Independence Day: Resurgence,” among others. She has also won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her leading roles in the TV series “Sisters” and “Once and Again.” Additional television credits include “CSI: NY,” “House” and “Graves” with Nick Nolte. During the last 25 years she has successfully balanced her work with her family life, including her husband Howard and two children. In her native Mississippi, Ward founded Hope Village for Children to provide a safe haven for more than 200 abused and neglected children each year. She also led the campaign to establish the $45 million Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Center in Meridian to highlight the state’s artists and entertainment entrepreneurs with hands-on exhibits. When not working or tending to her family and philanthropic projects, Ward is an accomplished painter and bestselling author. Her first book, Homesick, is part inspirational story, part memoir that tells Ward’s quest for a balance of the comforts of her small-town childhood and the big city way of life.

2017 COMMUNITY STARS JABY DENTON MAN OF THE YEAR Jaby Denton of Marks is working with dozens of fellow residents to develop a model for saving small rural Delta towns. Moving back to his farm in Marks, he was stirred by the needs of poor families in Quitman County and sought ways to help; thus began The Marks Project. The project targets the education of young people beginning with pre-K through high school. The Marks Project Community Support Board was established to ensure the community shares ideas and stays updated on current efforts. From the ‘jump start’ mentoring pre-K program and Ole Miss on-campus tutoring of high school students to a summer enrichment program for middle school students, Jaby and the board seek to make improvements in education, recreation and economic development. Jaby provided 25 of his farm acres to local farmers to grow peas to sell. The grounds of the former Marks High School are being redeveloped to add amenities to the walking track including a community playground. Jaby’s ideas, goals, and outreach are exceeded only by his perception, determination, and energy. Jaby is the father of two children and three grandchildren.

LYNDA AUSTIN WOMAN OF THE YEAR Lynda Austin of DeSoto County is a proven leader in the community of Walls and DeSoto County. After her working career in Memphis, Lynda continued her volunteer work in the county she calls home. As a certified Master Gardener, Lynda works with over 50 other Master Gardeners completing landscaping and beautification projects around the county and educating with hands-on exhibits at conservation events. In addition, she has given over 40 hours of volunteer service to her community. Lynda’s work with other organizations includes long-time board member of the Historic DeSoto County Museum, DeSoto Arts Council, Board of the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, and Mid-South Fair Board. A calling to serve led Lynda to run for Alderman in Walls. In 2012, she made history by becoming the first woman ever to serve as mayor for a town or city in DeSoto County. Lynda has lived in county for 60 years and is married to Bill Austin. They have three children and four grandchildren.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Fairway Mortgage in Hernando is a leader in the community through its service to various organizations. Branch manager Cindy Gordon led the volunteer efforts to bring a Dog Park to the city paid for through local donations and fundraisers. The $25,000 park was opened on October 20 as part of the City of Hernando’s Renasant Park and has become a howling success! From dogs to the arts, Fairway Mortgage’s community leadership enabled the DeSoto Arts Council to relocate to the former City Hall building through a $10,000 challenge grant to help jump-start the renovations.

NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR Tri-County Workforce Alliance in Clarksdale promotes long term economic and community development by building a competitive healthy workforce through education and job training. The Alliance has leveraged more than $1.5 million from foundations, local, state and federal government and private sector funds to serve more than 5,000 individuals classified as Future Workforce members. The High School Mentorship Program in Health Care Professions (9th - 12th grades) and the Academy for Mathematics, Reading and Science for Potential Health Care Professionals (6th - 8th grades), provides opportunities for students to learn about the various health fields and skills necessary. Over 200 students have graduated from high school and accumulated hours of dual enrollment in community colleges and universities based on the Registered Nurse curriculum.  MAN AND WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS ARE A TRIBUTE TO DAN AND MARGARET MADDOX  The Community Star Man and Woman of the Year carry the names of Dan and Margaret Maddox in tribute to their legacy of service and philanthropy. Together, Margaret and Dan Maddox made a formidable team who devoted their lives to entrepreneurship, adventure, and service. Dan and Margaret died as they lived: pursuing, with excellence, their great passions.

Welcome to the 18th Annual Crystal Ball! Once Upon a Time there was a Wonderful organization called the Community Foundation that wanted to Connect People Who Care with Causes that Matter in their kingdom in Northwest Mississippi, but they needed help. So they gave a Ball and all the kindest, most generous Grand Folk in the kingdom put on their finest ball gowns and helped them raise funds! We are so happy you have joined us in celebrating and supporting the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi! The Community Foundation supports over 400 non-profits in eleven counties in Northwest Mississippi, and the Crystal Ball is the only event that raises funds to offset the operating expenses of the Foundation.
