2020 ANNUAL REPORT
FROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2020 was a year of upheaval. Facing a global pandemic, we feared for our lives and those of our loved ones. Trips were cancelled, plans postponed. Economic challenges from the periods of shutdown translated to major financial setbacks for individuals, and uncertainty for organizations like Water Education Colorado. As we quarantined under stay-at-home orders that stretched into long months of limited contact, traditional connections with our professional networks were severed. At the same time, across our nation there was political upset, protests, and the elevation of underrepresented voices calling for justice and equity…and being heard. On the water front, drought once again plagued our state, and the work to manage demands, creatively protect and share water, negotiate among states and users, and update and fund the state water plan continued.
Our new strategic plan, adopted at the outset of 2020, has continued to guide our priorities, which include achieving equity and access in water education programming, as well as tackling the tough conversations to help pave the way to broad-based solutions. There may be no easy solutions, but we believe that where the will and commitment are present, and the care and consideration for others is genuine, we can achieve great things together. A vibrant, sustainable, and water-aware Colorado is no exception. Thank you so much for sticking with us through a tough year. It turned out to be full of opportunity and new learning experiences. Look out for the 2021 President’s Reception in September and Sustaining Colorado Watersheds conference, “Together Like Never Before,” in October. OUR EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS Our education and leadership programs foster a connected and engaged network of informed Coloradans and equip our leaders to advance collaborative solutions for Colorado water.
Adapting Programs in a Pandemic
The WEco team confronted pandemic-related challenges head-on, finding new, accessible ways to connect with our community and even expand our audience through adapting programs and events into creative virtual formats.
Water Leaders
The 2020 Water Leaders Program was held through a combination of in-person and virtual settings, using advanced development tools to help participants become more skilled and effective leaders. 16 participants “Our class all struggled with pandemic-related personal and professional issues, but Water Leaders was our safe space to express those frustrations and fears. Water Fluency
Despite uncertainty around the all-virtual format, the 2020 Water Fluency class, which focused on case studies from Southwestern Colorado, provided some of the most positive feedback on program value to date. 36 participants “Water Education Colorado will serve as a huge resource for advancing my knowledge of all things water. I intend to utilize this information in decision making and as a tool in my role in local government.”
Sustaining Colorado Watersheds Conference
Together with our partners, the Colorado Riparian Association and Colorado Watershed Assembly, we hosted our first virtual conference, “Business as (Un)Usual.” The theme focused on work that challenges the status quo and incorporates different perspectives around any given issue. 250+ participants 94% stated they would recommend the conference
Urban Water Cycle Tours
The 2020 Denver Urban Water Cycle Tour was held in a virtual, self-guided format, focusing on a section of the South Platte River in metro Denver. The Pedal the Poudre Tour was held before Covid became a limiting factor and showcased a route from Bellvue through Fort Collins along the Cache la Poudre River. As Colorado’s population continues to rapidly expand, the integration of development, or land use planning, with water management is a key strategy for growing water-smart communities. We enhance the amount, quality and effectiveness of water education across Colorado through professional development, shared practice and collective action.
Water Educator Network
Since 2014, WEco has led the Water Educator Network, an affiliate group for education and outreach professionals. Through WEN, educators reaching a diversity of audiences and geographies gain acces to tools, trainings, resources and co-collaborators to advance their practice. 2020 offerings included the annual water festival coordinators gathering and WEN Symposium, Project WET trainings, and a special webinar on inclusive civic engagement in a pandemic. 93 participants
Statewide Water Education Action Plan
Between 2018-2019, WEco led development of the Statewide Water Education Action Plan (SWEAP) to serve as a common agenda for water education’s role in achieving sustainable water for Colorado by 2050 via the Colorado Water Plan. SWEAP officially launched in January 2020, and in its first year of implementation gained significant momentum through the enrollment of 40 endorsing entities and dozens of co-implementers committed to advancing SWEAP outcomes. SWEAP includes 10 outcomes along a continuum from awareness building to knowledge and skills development to behavior change and, lastly, to systems change. A series of guiding principles and Critical Water Concepts are also foundational in the plan, which WEco will use to guide the Water Educator Network in telling a common story and achieving collective impact by 2025 that: “Coloradans are engaged in well-informed community discourse and decision making regarding balanced water solutions, and are empowered to take thoughtful action regarding critical water challenges facing the state and their communities.” 5-year timeframe 10 shared outcomes 8 guiding principles 6 Critical Water Concepts 40 endorsing organizations 4

Six Feet in Solidarity
During 2020’s early quarantine period, WEco continued sharing valuable educational resources that could still be accessed as everything else was shutting down. We focused on opportunities to “build your knowledge from a distance,” highlighting our vast library of magazines, blog posts, radio programs, webinar recordings, and more. 15,786 combined reach
Headwaters Magazine
In 2020, we published three successful issues of our flagship publication, featuring the topics of Colorado River Basin drought contingency plans, environmental justice and water, and aging water infrastructure. We also offered complimentary content to dig in deeper to the issues via blog posts, webinars and our first-ever podcast, produced in partnership with American Rivers. 115,314 combined reach
Citizen’s Guides
The Citizen’s Guide series features in-depth, peer-reviewed information on critical water topics, and in 2020 we updated our library with a 2nd edition to the guide to Where Your Water Comes From, a 3rd edition to the guide to Colorado Water Quality Protection and a brand-new guide to Colorado Groundwater. 3,872 print guides distributed, with thousands more online reads
Fresh Water News
WEco launched the Fresh Water News (FWN) initiative in 2018 to provide timely, insightful reporting on issues that are critical to helping the state and its citizens develop a sustainable water future. In 2020, FWN covered relevant topics like Colorado River drought studies, new federal regulations, and pandemic-related water impacts, as well as tracked water legislation, evolving drought conditions, and efforts to secure water plan funding.
