The public and policymakers need to understand franchising.
Our purpose
@OurFranchise is an industry-wide campaign created to spread the word about the value of franchising and share the stories of men and women just like you, who are leading the way as franchisors, franchisees, and franchise employees. The franchise business model has been proven time and time again to work, but it’s threatened when the public and politicians don’t understand how it operates to benefit local, independent franchise establishment owners and their communities. Putting a spotlight on real leaders succeeding with the franchise model is how we’ll ensure franchising is stronger than ever before.

Mind over Matter in a male dominated industry:
When I started out at the young age of 23 as an entrepreneur, I was unaware that owning a business can have profound psychological effects on me as a woman, often serving as a double-edged sword that brings both empowerment and Challenges. On one hand, my experience of entrepreneurship fostered a strong sense of independence, self-efficacy, and accomplishment, as women navigate challenges, make critical
decisions, and build their own brands. My journey certainly enhanced my confidence and provide a platform for personal and professional growth, allowing them to break through societal barriers and redefine their roles in the business world. However, the pressures of entrepreneurship can also lead to significant stress and anxiety, particularly as women often juggle multiple responsibilities, including family and societal expectations. The weight of these demands can sometimes result in feelings of isolation or self-doubt, especially in male-dominated industries. Ultimately, while owning a business can be a source of pride and fulfillment, it also requires a strong support system and effective coping strategies to manage the psychological challenges that may arise.
the importance of Mentorship and choosing a Broker:
Dee has established Atlanta Franchise Brokers and the Business Consulting Firm DCL Solutions group, as a premier resource for executives seeking to invest in franchises with proven business models. Her unique approach and extensive skill set her firm apart from traditional consulting firms, making her a trusted partner especially among women in this transformative journey.
As a serial entrepreneur I am deeply convinced that mentorship is a crucial component in the journey toward becoming a successful franchise owner. It acts as a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs navigating the intricate landscape of franchise ownership. A mentor, ideally an experienced franchisee or industry expert, offers invaluable insights, guidance, and support that significantly increase the chances of franchise success.
By sharing firsthand experiences, mentors enable mentees to understand the subtleties of running a franchise, from daily operations to strategic decision-making.
At Atlanta Franchise Brokers, I take pride in providing my clients with guidance on best practices, current industry trends, and potential pitfalls to avoid. This approach fosters a sense of confidence and preparedness among my clients.
The mentorship relationship not only accelerates the learning curve for my
clients but also broadens their professional network, unlocking access to resources, partnerships, and opportunities that may otherwise remain elusive. Ultimately, I view mentorship as a powerful tool that empowers aspiring franchise owners to make informed decisions, build resilience, and develop the essential skills needed to thrive in the competitive franchise landscape.
guiding e xecutives to entrepreneurial success
Many executives and early retirees possess exceptional leadership skills and strategic vision, but navigating the complexities of franchise ownership requires a different set of tools and insights. Dee’s firm specializes in guiding these executives through the selection process, ensuring they choose the right franchise that aligns with their passions, skills, and financial goals.
One of the key differentiators of Atlanta Franchise Brokers is Dee’s hands-on approach. She takes the time to understand each client’s unique background, aspirations, and concerns. This personalized attention allows her to tailor her recommendations, helping executives identify franchises that not only have a proven business model but also resonate with their individual strengths and interests.
Mastering the Franchise game for lasting legacies: six Ways
Building generational wealth through franchising is not just a strategic endeavor; it’s a powerful opportunity for women to create lasting legacies for themselves and their families. This guide is designed to empower women to navigate the franchise landscape with confidence and purpose, ensuring that their contributions leave a meaningful impact for generations to come.
Mastering the franchise game is an empowering journey for women, offering the chance to build generational wealth and create lasting legacies. By following these steps, you can harness your strengths, embrace your unique perspective, and make a meaningful impact in the franchising world. Together, let’s pave the way for future generations of women entrepreneurs to thrive and succeed!
step 1: Become a Franchisor
Transitioning from a franchisee to a franchisor empowers you to create and expand your own brand, showcasing your unique vision and leadership. This step involves developing a distinctive business model that reflects your values, establishing operational guidelines, and creating a franchise system that others can replicate.
Embrace Your Vision: As a woman, your perspective is invaluable. Use your experiences to shape a brand that resonates with your community and addresses their needs.
Build a Supportive Network: Surround yourself with mentors and fellow women entrepreneurs who can provide guidance and encouragement as you embark on this journey.
Champion Diversity: Create a franchise culture that values diversity and inclusion, setting a precedent for future generations of women in business.
step 2: Buy a Franchise as a Family Business
Pu rchasing a franchise that can be passed down through generations not only preserves your family legacy but also empowers your loved ones to thrive in a business environment.
Involve Your Family: Engage your family in the decision-making process, fostering a sense of ownership and shared responsibility. This collaboration strengthens family bonds and ensures everyone is invested in the business’s success.
Create a Legacy Plan: Develop a succession plan that outlines how the business will be transitioned to the next generation, empowering them to carry on you r vision and values.
step 3: Invest in a Franchise for Residual Income
Franchises are not just business opportunities; they are gateways to financial freedom and entrepreneurial success. By investing in a franchise, you step into a world where established brands and proven business models work in your favor, paving the way for consistent and ongoing revenue streams with minimal
active management. This powerful combination significantly reduces the risk of failure, allowing you to focus on growth and expansion. Imagine the potential of managing multiple units or scaling your franchise, all while enjoying the benefits of brand recognition that draws customers effortlessly. With comprehensive support from franchisors—including extensive training, marketing assistance, and operational guidance—you are equipped to navigate the business landscape with confidence. As you build your franchise empire, you can even create a pathway to passive income by empowering managers and staff to handle daily operations. Embrace the journey of franchise ownership, and unlock the door to a future filled with opportunity, stability, and the freedom to pursue your drea ms!
step 4: Purchase Real Estate Associated with a Franchise
Acquiring real estate linked to a franchise is a huge financial decision; it’s a powerful step toward building a lasting legacy that can inspire future generations. Imagine the stability of a consistent income stream and the potential for long-term appreciation,
creating a foundation of security for you and your loved ones. As you embark on this journey, focus on high-traffic retail spaces, strategically located office buildings, and freestanding restaurant properties that not only promise profitability but also serve vibrant communities. By selecting properties that boast prime visibility and accessibility, you’re not just investing in real estate; you’re becoming a catalyst for growth and opportunity. Consider the demographics that align with your franchise’s vision, ensuring that your investment meets the needs of the community it serves. With each thoughtful choice—whether it’s a bustling shopping center or a prominent fast-food location— you’re not only securing your financial future but also contributing to the local economy and enriching lives. Embrace this opportunity to create a legacy that resonates with purpose and prosperity, inspiring others to follow in your footsteps.
step 5: Become a Franchise Professional
Franchise professionals are the unsung heroes of the franchise industry,

embodying the spirit of entrepreneurship and empowerment. They are the guiding lights for aspiring franchisees, illuminating the path to success with their invaluable expertise and unwavering support. A franchise business consultant not only equips individuals with the knowledge and training needed to launch their dreams but also stands by them as they navigate the challenges of running a business. Meanwhile, franchise development managers are the architects of opportunity, connecting passionate entrepreneurs with the right franchise to fulfill their ambitions. These dedicated professionals conduct thorough market assessments, ensuring that every candidate finds their perfect match, while also fostering strong relationships that drive mutual success.
step 6: Purchase a Business Opportunity
A business opportunity, often referred to as a "biz op," shares similarities with a franchise but has some key differences. While both are governed by state and federal laws designed to protect buyers and sellers, a biz op does not require a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). Typically, a biz op is less expensive because it usually does not involve ongoing support or a relationship with the seller after the initial setup. For entrepreneurs who prefer to customize their operations, a biz op can be an appealing choice, as it allows for greater flexibility in how the business is run, with minimal restrictions. Overall, a business opportunity is generally less structured than a franchise.
I believe that mastering the franchise game requires strategic planning, research, and a commitment to building something great. By following these steps, you can create a sustainable business model that not only generates income but also preserves your family’s legacy for generations to come. My advice to women seeking to build a legacy through franchise is to embrace the journey, leverage your strengths, and make informed decisions to achieve lasting success in the franchising world.

Buy Ing A Fr AnChIsE? aLign your for Succe SS

The leap from corporate employment to business ownership is one of the most pivotal decisions a person can make. In addition to replacing a paycheck with business income, you are building something that aligns with who you are, how you lead, and the impact you want to make.
February’s article asked: “Is business ownership right for you?” and “Is franchising the right entry into business ownership?”
A franchise should be more than a good investment. It should be the right
investment for you. Two questions determine this fit.
1. What industry amplifies your strengths?
2. What franchise brand aligns with your vision and values?
By answering these, you avoid the common pitfalls of business ownership: Misalignment, burnout, and financial frustration. Let’s break them down.
Question 3: What Industry Amplifies Your strengths
Many people focus on finding a hot industry. But trends fade like TCBY yogurt in the Arizona desert. A franchise that fits your natural strengths will outlast any short-term market swings.
From corporate skills to Franchise success
During my time as Chief of the Terrace Park Fire Department, I learned that calm decision-making in chaos made the difference between mitigation and disaster. That skill carried over when I led ImageFIRST Cincinnati for twenty years. The ability to navigate business uncertainties, like supply chain disruptions or last-minute customer needs, made operations smoother.
Your existing skills already give you a competitive edge in the right industry. The question is, which industries amplify what you do best.
the tools to Identify Your Fit
Self-awareness is the foundation of a successful business decision. That is why I use tools like:
The Zorakle Assessment which measures entrepreneurial strengths and matches them with compatible industries.
The Confidential Questionnaire Defines values, leadership preferences, and ideal work-life balance.
BiG QueST ion To ASk TH e F r A nCH iSor: What traits do successful franchise partners in your system share?
If that answer does not match your strengths, it is not the right franchise.
Question 4: What Franchise Brand Aligns With Your vision and values
i ndustry fit is part of the equation. The right franchise brand supports your longterm vision and values, and your financial goals.
three tactics to Define Your vision
The Future Celebration Exercise
Fast forward three years. Your business is thriving. You are at a company event, reflecting on your success. Ask yourself:
• Who is in the room celebrating with you?
• Where are you celebrating?
• What milestones have you reached?
• What challenges have you and your team overcome in the journey?
• How has your business impacted your customers, employees, and community?
Write about the celebration in the past or present tense. The more details you add, the clearer your picture of success. If a franchise brand does not support this vision, it is the wrong fit.
Big question to ask a franchisee during validation calls: Does this franchise model support the lifestyle and success you envisioned when you started?
the Metaphor e xercise
Your business is more than numbers. It is an extension of your leadership style.
For Bella Vista Executive Advisors, my business metaphor is an executive jet service. My clients are not just buying a ticket. They are investing in a high-value, expertly guided experience. I am in the cockpit, navigating turbulence and keeping them on course.
Ask yourself:
• What does your business metaphor look like today: a tree, a wild animal, a landmark? Where are you now?
• What does success look like in three years? Where are you in the new picture?
BiG QueST ion To ASk yourSeLF: Does this franchise model allow me to operate the way I envision?
The organizational Chart exercise ( ivan Misner, Bni ) even if you start as a solopreneur, mapping out future roles clarifies what you will manage and what you will delegate.
values Alignment check
A strong franchise fit requires cultural alignment.
Ask yourself:
• Does this franchise reflect how i want to serve my community?
• Does the franchise leadership team inspire trust and transparency?
• Does the brand culture align with how I want to lead employees and serve customers?

How r ece SS ion r e S iLient franc H i S e S tran S cend economic u ncertainty
With cumulative inflation in the US increasing by over 20% from 2020 to 2025 and the economic uncertainty that comes with newly elected leaders, it’s important that entrepreneurs invest their time and money into recession-resistant industries.
Establishing businesses in essential service-based industries makes it possible for new franchise owners to grow steadily, regardless of market trends. Contents restoration franchises, for example, stay in steady demand during economic downturns because they offer homeowners a chance to gain peace of mind, recapture precious memories and return to normalcy in the face of disaster.
Why service-based franchises hold up well during recessions
The uS economy ebbs and flows, making recessions an inevitable part of the system. In moments of economic downturn, people become more conservative with their spending and avoid splurging on luxury purchases. This response to a weaker market puts pressure on many industries, including retail, restaurants and tourism services.
However, companies that offer essential services to consumers tend to remain steady and can even grow during a weaker economic landscape. Examples of common businesses that thrive during uncertain economic futures include essential home services.
When thinking of establishing a recession-
resilient business, potential franchise owners must consider potential fluctuations in the market and invest accordingly. Choosing an essential home service, like a contents restoration franchise, gives entrepreneurs a chance to see a profit when other industries struggle.
How demand for contents restoration keeps franchises steady natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires and earthquakes can happen at any time and are unfortunately becoming more frequent. Last year, the nation experienced 27 confirmed extreme weather events with losses of over $1 billion per event.
And with the tragic outbreak of recent wildfires in Los Angeles County, the costliest weather event in California history at an estimated $275 billion, 2025 is already feeling the effects of extreme weather.
Contents restoration franchises remain steady and often see an increase in demand in the wake of these events. Much of the increased demand doesn’t come from the actual cleaning, storage and restoration
services they provide. Instead, contents restoration franchises supply customers with the peace of mind that they can overcome their situation after a weather event and return to normal more quickly.
By building compassionate relationships with customers, contents restoration franchises become an essential service for homeowners in need. The resulting demand keeps franchises stable, even as economic downturns increase pressure on other industries.
the effect of strategic partnerships on a franchise’s resilience
Contents restoration franchises are in a unique position because they appeal both to consumers and other businesses. Focusing on B2B sales and forming strategic partnerships with businesses who deal with disaster relief can add to the stability of contents restoration franchises. Common businesses franchise owners should connect with are.
• i nsurance adjusters
• restoration and mitigation businesses

• Property management companies
• Contractors who specialize in disaster recovery
• Third-party administrators
Creating an expanded network gives franchise owners an added level of security when the economy starts to dip. By relying on other professionals in the industry, B2B efforts open the door to more business for contents restoration franchises in any economic climate.
e xpanding to multi-unit ownership can make franchises even more stable
Franchise owners can also thrive in lean times because they have the unique opportunity to expand into multi-unit ownership. Owning multiple franchises creates a more stable platform for franchise owners to build a legacy, even during recessions.
Owners of multiple franchises have the potential to save more money. On average, multi-unit owners take home close to $135,000 in yearly income — about $65,000 more than most small business owners. While no one wants to just weather the storm, multi-unit franchisees do have more chances to save more money during prosperous times and wait out a recession than other business owners.
Who can invest in recessionresilient
franchises?
The beauty of contents restoration franchise ownership is that new franchisees don’t need decades of experience in the industry to start a business. Whether they are a new entrepreneur looking for a stable option during low points in the economy or a seasoned veteran expanding their reach, anyone with enough capital and determination can invest in a new contents restoration franchise.
Reliable franchisors give new franchisees the tools they need to launch their location with confidence. From built-in operations systems to thorough training modules, working with a home service franchise platform will set new franchise owners up for success. v

the p ower of Living fuLLy:
In a world that constantly tells us to hustle harder, work longer, and sacrifice today for the promise of tomorrow, it’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of endless hours at the office or constant travel for business.
Many people wear their 80-hour workweeks like a badge of honor, believing it’s the only path to success. But let me ask you this: what’s the point of reaching the mountaintop if you’re standing there alone, disconnected from the people who matter most?
Here’s the truth: Your lifestyle, your family, and your passions aren’t just things to fit into the cracks of your schedule—they’re the foundation of a life well-lived. And when you align your life with what truly matters, something incredible happens: you not only build wealth, but you do it in a way that enriches every area of your life.

Whether you have an existing portfolio or searching for your first franchise, he can help you to pursue your dreams. www.Myperfectfranchise.com
the Illusion of the grind
For decades, we’ve been sold a lie: the harder you grind, the more successful you’ll be. But let’s be real—how many people on their deathbeds say, “I wish I’d spent more time at the office”? none. yet so many of us sacrifice the very things that make life worth living—time with our spouses, watching our kids grow up, deepening our friendships—all in the name of “success.” We chase money, titles, and accolades, believing they’ll bring us happiness. But when we finally achieve them, we realize something’s missing. That’s because success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure. You might have a fat bank account, but if you’re estranged from your family, disconnected from your community, and burnt out, is it really worth it?
the Reward of Being Present
There’s a profound joy that comes from being present for the people who matter most. Imagine being there to watch your kids’ first steps, to cheer them on at their games, or to have deep conversations with your spouse over dinner instead of hurried texts between meetings.
And here’s the kicker: being present isn’t just good for your relationships—it’s good for you. Studies show that strong social connections improve your mental health, boost your immune system, and even extend your lifespan.
living Your Passions together
Passion is the fuel that drives us. It’s what gets us out of bed in the morning, excited about the day ahead. But too often, we leave our passions behind in the pursuit of a paycheck.
Here’s the thing: your passions aren’t distractions—they’re part of your purpose. And when you share your passions with your family, you create experiences that bring you closer together.
When you live your passions, you’re not just enriching your own life—you’re teaching your kids the importance of following their dreams. You’re showing them that it’s possible to build a life that’s both meaningful and successful.
Franchising: the Proven Path to Work- life Balance
Franchising isn’t just about running a business. It’s about following a proven system that allows you to build a thriving enterprise while still having the time and freedom to live your life on your terms.
Let’s break down why franchising is such a powerful tool for creating the life you want:
1A Proven Plan
When you start a franchise, you’re not starting from scratch. You’re partnering with a brand that has already laid the groundwork for success.
Franchises offer a blueprint—a step-bystep system that shows you exactly how to operate your business. You don’t have to figure out what works and what doesn’t. The trial and error has already been done for you.
2comprehensive training and support
One of the biggest advantages of franchising is the support network you gain.
Franchise brands provide extensive training, ensuring you understand every aspect of the business before you even
open your doors. And once you’re up and running, you’ll have access to ongoing support—from marketing guidance to operational assistance.
It’s like having a corporate team behind you, but the difference is you own the outcome.
3cutting- edge technology and systems
In today’s world, technology is essential for running a successful business. Most franchise brands provide cutting-edge tools and systems to streamline your operations.
4Business ownership with Flexibility
Franchising allows you to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself.
You’re the boss. You set the schedule. You make the decisions. But you’re never alone. You have a network of franchisees and a corporate team ready to support you every step of the way.
Designing a legacy
Franchising isn’t just about building wealth—it’s about creating a legacy.
When you involve your family in your business, you’re passing down skills, values, and a mindset of success that will serve them for generations.
the life You Deserve
At the end of the day, life isn’t about how many hours you spend at the office or how much money you make. It’s about the moments you share with the people you love, the passions you pursue, and the impact you have on your community.
Franchising gives you the tools, resources, and support to create a life that’s not only successful but deeply fulfilling.
So stop grinding away for someone else’s dreams. Start building a life that aligns with your values, enriches your relationships, and leaves a legacy you’re proud of.
now go out there and live the life you were born for. v

According to Angi.com’s State of Home Spending Report, homeowners spent around $9,500 on average for home improvements in 2024, and 93% of homeowners are planning new home improvement projects in 2025.
With that in mind, joining a home improvement franchise could be a lucrative investment for entrepreneurs looking for a stable investment opportunity.
Here to talk with us about how entrepreneurs can capitalize on the popularity of home improvements and what trends to watch for in the home improvement space is David Dunsmuir, president of Gotcha Covered, the premier provider of custom window treatments in north America.
In your opinion, why should an entrepreneur consider investing in a home improvement franchise in 2025?
Home improvement is a stable industry regardless of whether the stock market is up or down. In addition, demand remains consistent because people often follow trends to keep their homes up to date with the latest improvements. For example, people will always need window coverings for their homes regardless of the economic landscape. Whether it’s to help keep heat inside their home during the winter or to create a calming ambiance, people will purchase window treatments.

About David Dunsmuir:
David is the President of Gotcha Covered, a custom window treatment franchise that has over 160 franchises in the United States and Canada combined. The company specializes in providing end-to-end consultation to its clients. For more information, please visit gotchacovered.com.
For more information regarding Gotcha Covered franchising opportunities, please visit gotchacoveredfranchising.com.
By investing in a home improvement franchise, entrepreneurs have a chance to own a business with lower risk and more opportunities for growth than other volatile industries or verticals.
How can constantly changing trends work to the advantage of potential franchisees as it pertains to operating a successful home improvement franchise?
Constantly changing trends mean that home improvement franchise owners have more opportunities for repeat business with their current client list. In the window covering space, new trends in soft or hard window coverings encourage clients to change their outdated look to keep their homes contemporary. With that said, changing trends also create opportunities for new business by generating interest among new homeowners who are just getting introduced to the world of window treatments.

What role does the increase in home values play for franchise owners in the home improvement industry?
r ising home values can influence where homeowners want to invest their money and how much they want to spend on home improvements. In hotter markets, some homeowners may only want to make cosmetic changes instead of complete remodels that cost thousands of dollars and require months of waiting. If a homeowner is looking to sell in favorable markets, they may be willing to spend a little more to make upgrades. For entrepreneurs looking to enter the space, there are opportunities to generate revenue in both situations.
As families grow, their needs grow with them. Where can home service brands expand their offerings to meet the needs of new parents, and why does this make investing in a franchise more attractive to potential franchisees?
new parents prioritize safety and convenience when growing their families, and they are willing to invest in their home to tailor it to their needs. Home service franchises can expand their offerings to include family-friendly packages, like increased safety upgrades around the kitchen or bathroom.
Many safety-related home updates are targeted at the DIY space. Franchise owners can use this to their advantage by selling parents on the convenience of donefor-you services and the peace of mind that things were installed properly on day one.
If there was one thing you could say to persuade an entrepreneur into joining a home improvement franchise, what would it be?
Whether the economy is booming or not, the goods and services sold by home improvement and home service franchises will be in demand. If you are looking to create an empire, establish financial freedom and scale your business, investing in a home service franchise can help accelerate your path versus going it alone.
What advice would you give to entrepreneurs already looking to open a home services franchise in the next year?
I would tell them to keep an eye on what’s trending in the market as they open and do their best to follow those trends. Sustainability and automation are two common themes throughout the home services space right now, so it makes sense to highlight your eco-friendly options when making house calls or visiting with a potential customer. v

In recent years, women have emerged as a dynamic force in the world of franchising and small business ownership. Their contributions have not only reshaped the entrepreneurial landscape but have also sparked significant growth in women-owned businesses across diverse industries.
This article explores the rise of women in franchising, the impact of female-
owned businesses on the economy, and the unparalleled opportunities for growth through franchising.
the Rise of Women entrepreneurs
The past decade has seen a remarkable surge in the number of women starting their own businesses. According to the national Association of Women Business owners ( nAWBo), there are more than 13 million women-owned businesses in the United States, representing 42% of all small businesses. These enterprises
collectively generate $1.9 trillion in revenue and employ nearly 9.4 million people.
This growth is not confined to the u.S.; women entrepreneurs are making waves globally. Factors driving this trend include increased access to education, mentorship programs, financial resources, and a growing cultural emphasis on gender equality and empowerment. Social media and digital platforms have also played a pivotal role, providing women with tools to market their brands and connect with customers.

Women in Franchising: A natural Fit
Franchising has become an especially appealing avenue for women entrepreneurs. The franchise model offers a structured path to business ownership, reducing some of the risks associated with starting a business from scratch. Women, often known for their organizational skills, adaptability, and ability to build relationships, excel in franchising.
According to Franchise Business Review’s 2022 Women in Franchising report, women now own or co-own 32% of franchise businesses in the United States, a number that has steadily increased over the last decade. Industries like health and wellness, beauty, education, and food service have particularly attracted female franchisees, thanks to their alignment with women’s interests and consumer trends.
success stories of Femaleowned Franchise Brands
Women entrepreneurs have not only embraced franchising as franchisees but have also developed their own successful franchise brands. Here are a few inspiring examples:
• Jersey Mike’s Subs: While the brand itself was not founded by a woman, its rapid growth and culture of inclusivity have attracted a significant number of female franchise owners. Many of these women have scaled their operations, owning multiple units and serving as mentors for others.
• The Gingham Cafe: This women-owned brand has gained recognition for its innovative approach to casual dining, creating a unique franchise model that emphasizes training, support, and community involvement.
• Vacation Planners: A travel franchise led by women, Vacation Planners has grown into a market leader with over 800 locations, showcasing the potential for women to dominate in industries traditionally considered male-dominated.
• our Matcha Place: A fantastic story and brand in the growing matcha drink industry of a mother and two daughters who started a brand based on passion and their vision to bring healthy, delicious matcha products and drinks to the masses.
opportunities in Womenowned Businesses
Women-owned businesses are a vital engine of economic growth. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that women-owned employer firms grew by 6% from 2014 to 2019, outpacing the growth rate of all businesses. This momentum has created a fertile ground for franchising, offering women entrepreneurs a chance to expand their reach and maximize their impact. Franchising provides several benefits that
make it a compelling growth strategy for women-owned businesses:
1. Scalability: Franchising allows women entrepreneurs to scale their businesses without shouldering the entire financial and operational burden themselves.
2. Support Networks: Franchise systems often include comprehensive training, marketing support, and mentorship, which are invaluable for women navigating the complexities of business growth.
3. Access to Capital: Franchising can help overcome one of the most significant barriers for women entrepreneurs— access to funding. By leveraging a proven model, franchisees are often more attractive to lenders and investors.
4. Work-Life Balance: Many franchise opportunities are designed with flexibility in mind, enabling women to balance their professional and personal responsibilities more effectively.
Industries Where Women Are thriving
While women entrepreneurs are making strides in nearly every industry, some sectors have seen particularly strong representation:
• Health and Wellness: Women have been at the forefront of the health and wellness movement, launching franchises focused on fitness, nutrition, and holistic care.

• Education and Childcare: Franchises like kumon, The Goddard School, and other education-focused brands have benefited from women’s leadership and commitment to nurturing future generations.
• Beauty and Personal Care: From nail salons to medical spas, women have carved out a niche in the booming beauty industry, leveraging their understanding of consumer preferences.
• Food and Beverage: Women are bringing creativity and innovation to the food industry, building brands that prioritize quality, sustainability, and customer experience.
challenges and solutions
Despite their successes, women entrepreneurs still face unique challenges, including gender bias, limited access to funding, and balancing work with family responsibilities. Addressing these issues requires a multi-faceted approach:
1. Advocacy and Policy Changes: Governments and industry organizations can play a crucial role by implementing policies that support women entrepreneurs, such as grants, tax incentives, and anti-discrimination measures.
2. Mentorship and Networking: Programs that connect women with experienced mentors and industry peers can provide invaluable guidance and encouragement.
3. Education and Training: Equipping women with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in business, such as financial literacy and leadership training, can level the playing field.
4. Access to Capital: Expanding funding opportunities, including women-focused venture capital funds and microloans, can help bridge the financing gap.
the Future of Women in Franchising
The future of women in franchising and small business is bright. As more women recognize the potential of franchising as a pathway to entrepreneurship, the industry will continue to benefit from

their creativity, resilience, and leadership. organizations like the i nternational Franchise Association ( i FA) and nAWBo are actively working to support women in franchising, offering resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy.
Moreover, the increasing visibility of successful women franchisees and franchisors serves as inspiration for others to follow in their footsteps. Initiatives that celebrate female entrepreneurs, such as awards and recognition programs, further encourage women to pursue their business dreams.

A legacy Beyond the Bottom line
In the world of franchising, success isn’t just about the bottom line; it’s about the legacy you leave behind and the lives you touch along the way.
Teresa Johnson, CEO of Color Me Mine, has made a profound impact not only on her brand but on the lives of countless others who have been inspired by her entrepreneurial journey. Her leadership goes beyond steering one of the fastest-growing brands in its category — it’s about empowering people to take control of their futures and build businesses of their own.
From corporate stability to entrepreneurial Risk
Teresa’s path to becoming one of the most influential women in franchising didn’t start in the way many might expect. In 2005, Teresa was working at a stable corporate job with a boat manufacturing company. Though the work provided security, she felt a pull to take a different path as the company underwent significant changes. She quit her corporate job with plans to start her own boat manufacturing company with her colleague, but then a non-compete agreement stood in her way. She didn’t have a clear blueprint at the time, but she understood that she had to keep looking for opportunities.
That’s when an unexpected opportunity landed in her inbox: the local paint-your-own-pottery (PYOP) studio she and her daughter frequented was up for sale. She put the $25,000 down payment for the studio on her credit card, committed to learning the ropes of business ownership and never looked back.
"I had an opportunity to become an entrepreneur, and i knew it would be tough," Teresa reflects. "But I wanted to show my daughter that anything was possible. That was the moment I decided to start."
By 2007, she had secured the investors needed to launch the boat company while simultaneously growing her pottery business. As she grew, she began to see the power of franchising as a means to

scale her success and had a desire to gain experience in business management and leadership, so in 2010, she became a multi-unit franchisee with Painting with a Twist. By 2011, she had expanded her PYOP operations to four studios, one of which she co-owned with her daughter, who was 15 at the time.
Revitalizing a Brand: teresa’s vision for color Me Mine
In 2021, after leadership changes and acquisitions, Teresa became co-owner and CEO of Color Me Mine. She embraced this new role with a clear vision: to revitalize the brand and provide customers with a therapeutic escape that allowed them to leave their worries at the door.
Since becoming CEO at Color Me Mine, the brand has experienced a dynamic resurgence. Under her leadership, sales have surged, with Average Unit Volume (AUV) up by 32% in just three years, and a record-breaking $1.447 million in highest gross revenue for a single unit achieved. After a decade of stagnation,

new Color Me Mine studios are now opening across the country, and the company is on track to reach 300 locations by 2029. The brand’s revitalization under Teresa is a testament to her ability to drive growth and innovation in an ever-evolving market. But for Teresa, the business success is only part of the story — her true passion lies in helping others achieve their entrepreneurial dreams.
empowering o
thers: teresa’s true
Passion
Teresa has made it her mission to empower others to follow in her footsteps. She’s mentored more than 35 individuals, helping them navigate the complexities of business ownership and build their own businesses. Perhaps one of her greatest accomplishments is the success of her daughter, who, inspired by Teresa’s example, opened her own business at just 15 years old. Today, at 30, she and her husband own five businesses in nashville, a testament to Teresa’s lasting influence on the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Mentorship in Action: stories of transformation
one of Teresa’s most fulfilling experiences as a leader comes from mentoring those who work with her. "I always talk with my team members about their dreams," she says. "It’s likely not working in a PyoP studio forever, but if i can help them realize what they want to do next and be their 'dream manager,' that’s the most fulfilling role for me."
Teresa’s mentorship has impacted not just her family, but countless individuals who have crossed her path. One story that stands out is of katy, a young woman who had her seventh birthday party at Teresa’s studio years ago. As fate would have it, katy returned to the studio at 17, seeking a job while in college. Teresa hired her, offering guidance not only on the technical aspects of the business but also on leadership.
over time, katy faced challenges while learning to manage the studio on her own. When she expressed doubts about her abilities, Teresa reassured her and gave her the confidence to excel. With Teresa’s support, katy grew in both skill and confidence. After college, she transitioned into a career as a high school English teacher and eventually became a school principal. years later, katy shared a powerful message with Teresa: “I learned how to be a leader from YOU. Truly. You instilled such great wisdom and I’m excited to put it in to practice.”
Building More than Businesses: teresa’s leadership legacy
This is just one of many stories, including that of Teresa’s daughter, who has also been shaped by her mentorship. These moments highlight Teresa’s ability to help individuals — whether family or strangers — unlock their potential and grow in both business and leadership.
Teresa’s commitment to both business growth and the success of others is the cornerstone of her thriving career in franchising. Through her example, she’s proving that a true leader not only drives innovation and business success but also nurtures the next generation of leaders. v

Diversifying your franchise Portfolio: Strategie S for Succe SS in 2025 and Beyond

In today's dynamic business landscape, franchise diversification has become a crucial strategy for long-term success and resilience.
As we navigate the complexities of the current market, multi-unit and multi-brand franchisees are increasingly exploring innovative ways to expand their portfolios and maximize their investments. Several key trends are shaping the future of franchise diversification.
Maximizing time and Money through synergistic combinations
one of the most significant trends is the strategic combination of complementary brands to create powerful synergies. Multi-brand franchisees are recognizing the value of aligning businesses that can mutually benefit from shared resources, customer bases, and operational efficiencies. This approach not only maximizes the return on investment but also allows franchisees to leverage their existing expertise across multiple brands.
For example, a franchisee operating a fitness center might consider adding a healthy food franchise to their portfolio. This combination creates a natural synergy, allowing the franchisee to cross-promote services and cater to health-conscious consumers across both businesses. Similarly, a hotel franchise owner might integrate a coffee shop or restaurant franchise within their properties, enhancing the guest experience while creating additional revenue streams. Another aspect of this trend is the diversification into separate industries to
boost income streams. By investing in unrelated sectors, franchisees can protect themselves against industry-specific downturns and tap into diverse market demands.
Building Resilience in times of Recession and uncertainty
In an era of economic uncertainty, franchisees are increasingly turning to diverse portfolios as a means of weathering market fluctuations. By investing in a mix of industries, franchisees can balance high-demand sectors with more stable, recession-resistant businesses to ensure a steady income stream.
B2B services have become particularly attractive in this context. These services often provide essential support to other businesses, making them less vulnerable to consumer spending fluctuations.
When diversifying for resilience, consider the following strategies:
• i nvest in counter-cyclical industries that tend to perform well during economic downturns
• Balance high-growth opportunities with stable, established brands
• Look for franchises with recurring revenue models or essential services
• Consider businesses that cater to different customer segments or price points
Implementing a successful Diversification strategy
While diversification offers numerous benefits, it's crucial to approach it strategically. Here are some key considerations for franchisees looking to expand their portfolios:
• Assess your current operations: ensure your existing franchises are stable and profitable before expanding.
• Conduct thorough market research: Understand the potential of new industries or brands you're considering.
• evaluate operational synergies: Look for opportunities to leverage existing resources and expertise across new ventures.

k im gubera, Chief Executive Officer at PIrTEK, is responsible for the company’s operations. Bringing more than 20 years of franchising experience and leadership to her current role at PIrTEK, Kim is focused on developing the franchise network, ensuring outstanding franchise support, and driving profitable growth within the franchise system by keeping corporate employees and franchise owners working together fervently to achieve shared goals.

“ By investing in a mix of industries, franchisees can balance high-demand sectors with more stable, recession-resistant businesses to ensure a steady income stream.”
• Consider your personal strengths and interests: Choose franchises that align with your skills and passions.
• Maintain a balanced portfolio: Aim for a mix of established and emerging brands, as well as different industry sectors.
• Plan for scalability: Select franchises that offer room for growth and multi-unit expansion.
• Build strong relationships with franchisors: Open communication and mutual trust are essential for success in multi-brand franchising.
the Future of Franchise Diversification
As we look ahead, the trend towards diversification in franchising is likely to continue growing. Multi-unit, multi-brand franchisees are becoming increasingly influential in the franchise landscape,
driving innovation and shaping industry practices.
In conclusion, diversifying your franchise portfolio is a powerful strategy for maximizing returns, minimizing risk, and building a resilient business empire. By carefully selecting complementary brands, embracing innovative business models, and focusing on recession-resistant industries, franchisees can position themselves for long-term success in an ever-changing economic landscape.
remember, successful diversification is not just about adding more brands to your portfolio – it's about creating a strategic mix of businesses that work together to drive growth, efficiency, and profitability. As you consider your next franchise investment, take the time to evaluate how it fits into your overall business strategy and how it can contribute to a stronger, more diverse portfolio. v

Switching careers can feel like a big leap, but it’s also an exciting chance to explore something new and find work that truly lights us up. In fact, career changes are more common than ever, with half of professionals seeking a fresh direction at some point in their careers.
We’ve both gone through that shift ourselves and know it’s not always easy— especially when it means taking the plunge into entrepreneurship.
For us, becoming Mathnasium Learning Center franchisees wasn’t just about opening a business—it was about bringing a much-needed resource to our Park City community. By combining our expertise in economics and education, we launched our Mathnasium center, a brand we both trusted as customers.
Fast forward two years, and our business is thriving. Every step of the way has been
a learning experience. We’re excited to share the five key lessons we’ve learned, in hopes they’ll help others navigate their own career transitions and succeed in franchise ownership.
1choose the Right Partner;
not Just a convenient one:
Building a business with a partner who complements your strengths and weaknesses is essential. A shared vision and mutual support from day one is key to long-term success. By leveraging each other’s expertise and collaborating effectively, you can overcome challenges and unlock your full potential for growth.
When choosing a partner, it’s important to consider both your personality and theirs to ensure smooth collaboration without constant conflict over decisions. While working with friends or family can be rewarding, it’s not always the right fit for everyone. The ideal partner is someone who shares your passion for the business, builds mutual trust in decision-making, and keeps you motivated through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
2overcoming staffing challenges in the early stages:
Hiring the right team is one of the biggest challenges early on. it’s crucial to find individuals who align with your vision and
contribute to creating a positive, motivated culture. Take the time to identify the skills you need, and recognize where you can train and nurture unique talents within your team.
Understanding your end goal and working backward will help you build a dream team you can rely on as your business grows. By assembling a team you trust, you’ll empower them to effectively manage the business and follow the processes you’ve established.
3How to Focus on the now:
Starting a new business can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to stay focused on the immediate tasks. Don’t get lost in the long-term challenges—take things one step at a time and prioritize what needs to be done first. By breaking big goals into smaller, manageable steps, you can keep up momentum and make progress without feeling overwhelmed. Staying grounded throughout the process is key. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and as challenges come up, take a moment to reflect on what you’ve already accomplished. recognizing your progress reminds you of the journey so far. Taking steady steps toward your long-term goals is far more manageable than trying to make giant leaps when navigating a career change of this magnitude.
It’s also important to occasionally step back and evaluate where you are with your

business, so you can clearly envision both short-term and long-term goals.
4the value of Mentorship and support systems:
Having strong mentors and a proven franchise model is crucial when navigating the complexities of starting a new business. Mentorship offers valuable guidance, boosts your confidence, and provides the tools needed for success. With a reliable support system in place, you can tackle obstacles more effectively and stay focused on your long-term goals.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions and lean on the franchise leadership team. One of the biggest advantages of joining a franchise is that the challenges have already been worked through, helping to streamline the opening process and beyond. The leadership team is there to support you and set you up for long-term success.
5trusting Your gut When Making career changes:
When considering a big career change, trusting your instincts and pursuing your passion is essential. Follow your gut, especially when choosing a franchise opportunity that aligns with your values and long-term goals. By staying true to your instincts, you’ll find greater fulfillment and resilience when faced with challenges.
Your gut feeling is a valuable roadmap in life, and that shouldn’t change when it comes to business. While knowledge and careful evaluation are important, if something doesn’t feel right, trust your intuition. There’s a reason you felt compelled to make a career change, so don’t hesitate to rely on your instincts when making decisions for your business.
Change can feel daunting, but it’s also an exciting opportunity for growth— especially when it comes to our careers. While we may not always seek change, sometimes it’s exactly what we need. With franchising, you have proven systems in place that ease the challenges of starting a new business. From there, it’s all about following simple strategies to set you and your brand up for long-term success as you embrace your new passion. v

“
Franchising has created fantastic opportunities for women and minorities to build generational wealth while having control over their own business and source of income.
”
As an Asian woman in a maledominated industry, my path was sometimes a challenging one. The learning curve of becoming a restaurateur was not unlike previous professional experiences in which both my ethnicity and gender impacted how colleagues and investors perceived me.
I had departed from a successful career in law, and also grew up in Louisiana as an immigrant during the mid 80s, so I was no stranger to racism and sexism in the workplace.
Once upon a time, like most things, franchising was a man’s business. Today, there are still countless societal and financial barriers that prevent women from finding success in the entrepreneurial space. It was once widely believed that women, especially minorities, were not equipped to handle the complexities of owning and operating a business, let alone multiple locations on a national scale. Self-founded and self-funded, I am the majority owner of Bun Mee backed by a few minority investors. Even though I am clearly at the helm— people still attach me to a man’s success by-proxy.
While building my franchise, I felt the weight of this most acutely when I visited construction sites and dealt with contractors and subcontractors. I felt dismissed or underestimated. Other times, a project manager on site would direct their comments and make eye contact only to my male colleagues as if I weren’t there. I would often be asked if I had a male business partner (or a husband partner) working alongside me because it was uncommon to see a sole female founder. I’ve dealt with subordinates who have spoken in condescending tones and innuendo towards me that I believe would not happen if I were male. I am also faced with ingrained subtle gender biases and stereotypes– women can’t be decisive decision makers, we are too emotional, or that we weren’t tough enough to handle a difficult industry dominated by men.
“Why don’t women just open their own

businesses instead of complaining about male dominated industries?” many men ask. When you don’t see yourself represented in a particular industry, it makes it hard to find mentors and networking opportunities. This can go all the way back to high school, where your GPA, your school’s reputation and your financial situation determine which degree to pursue at what school, which college scouts visit your school, or if you could even afford to go to university at all.
In college, many student and professional organizations are dominated by longstanding family or social ties. Many Fortune 500 executives (approximately 80% as of 2021) have been members of historically white Greek-lettered fraternities, which can reinforce gendered and racial inequities in the U.S. professional world. Even the idea of “getting your foot in the door” as a woman can feel impossible, because factually speaking, it almost is. As of March 2024, only 2.2% of all venture capital went to women-owned businesses. That means that 98.8% of financing opportunities went to male CEOs and founders, who likely will award future financing and leadership opportunities to other men. Thus, the disparity between women in leadership and the overall wage gap continues in a vicious cycle.
In 2025, despite men being equally capable of being present and involved fathers, it still somehow falls to women to hold down a full-time job while also being a primary caretaker and homemaker. Even owning my own business doesn’t exempt me from this. Many people don’t realize i’m a single mom who wants to be as hands-on
as possible in parenting my son. Balancing being an involved, attentive mom while making sure to stay heavily involved in my business is a huge challenge. I do not have the luxury of relying on a partner to help balance the caretaking responsibilities or the extra financial security of living in a joint-income household. Furthermore, single mothers tend to face harsher critiques and social stigma whereas single fathers are praised for “going the extra mile” to perform a duty that is not inherently ‘theirs’ to do. Due to the wage gap, single fathers tend to hold higher paying jobs and are more financially stable than single mothers.
Today, women are getting heavily involved in franchising and changing the industry for the better, often coming from sexist workplaces or feeling misunderstood as a female consumer. As with any industry, there is still a glass ceiling to shatter and prestigious opportunities that will be harder for me to obtain compared to those in white, male-dominated networks. The 9-5 work day, after all, was created to better suit a man’s natural circadian rhythm than a woman’s—true story! Today, there are many talented men who do not work well following a woman leader, or collaborate well with women in a team environment.
Franchising has created fantastic opportunities for women and minorities to build generational wealth while having control over their own business and source of income. As a busy single mom, this means i have far more flexibility in my schedule than I would if I were working for someone else. v

Opening a new business is not an easy feat, but this combined with learning the English language and the 2009 recession was quite the task! These considerable numbers of barriers were more than a woman entering franchising might usually face.
My daughter and I weren’t native English speakers and we didn’t have a male co-founder. Essentially, I was leaving everything I knew and putting everything I had, into a business that might or might not work.
This wasn’t just any business. We wanted to bring something thoughtful and personal to the U.S., to help new audiences embrace the culinary culture that my daughter and I were born into. French pastries represent the pinnacle of Parisian perfection and attention to detail, whether it be through flavor pairings or in the artistry of the pastry’s appearance and presentation. Similar to any patisserie you could walk into in France, we knew we wanted to offer our take on France’s finest macarons, pastries, gelatos, and coffees at a reasonable price. The amount of love and care that goes into French desserts, especially the desserts I grew up eating with my family, cannot easily be replicated unless the authenticity remains centerstage in growing the franchise footprint. Thus, we had to be incredibly careful when mapping out what Le Macaron would taste, feel, and look like. How does one succinctly weave the unconditional love between an immigrant mother and

daughter into a franchise concept’s design, aesthetic, menu and brand personality? With the proper amount of love, time, care and education, it is possible. We did this through the compact café model, which caters to convenience for both franchisee and customer, without compromising the quality of the product. A Le Macaron buildout is quaint and small, something that effortlessly blends into the bustling businesses lining the cobblestone roads of Paris. While anyone can find a piece of France at any of our locations, each and every macaron is still made in Sarasota, Florida at our confectionary, led by my daughter’s husband. This ultimate commitment to authenticity and quality control is what truly set us apart from competitors, and allows for franchise owners to receive ready-to-serve

confections without having to bake them in-house every day.
When it comes to indulging in a truly authentic French culinary experience, it doesn’t start and end with the café’s appearance. nothing compares to the delicate artistry of the macaron itself. Each confection we offer is made with a time-honored recipe that dates back centuries in Europe. Since the beginning, we’ve committed to this tradition, using only the finest natural ingredients: ground almonds, soft meringue, and premium fillings like rich ganache, velvety creams, and homemade fruit jams. Lightly crisp on the outside with a smooth, creamy center, each macaron is a testament to the elegance of French pâtisserie and this time-honored attention to detail. While we pride ourselves on attention to detail, we also understand the importance of simplicity and purity in our ingredients. Our macarons contain no preservatives, are gluten-free and kosher.
As one builds a brand with authenticity, it is important to seek out strategic partnerships with likeminded brands who share similar values to build brand trust in consumers (and to attract enthusiasts who may have only learned about us through these partnerships and collaborations!)
Most recently, we partnered with Leonidas Chocolate and now supply its premier Belgian chocolate in all our stores. Both of our brands are family-founded, owned and operated, and share similar missions of bringing people happiness through authentic, high-quality, European-style baked goods. It wouldn’t make sense to offer franchisees and consumers an authentic European dining experience if our resources, ingredients,
It is crucial to be thoughtful, intentional, and authentic in what you are offering as a franchisor looking to grow. i firmly believe that it is a leader’s job to share their hard-won wisdom and experiences with others, especially those looking to open up a restaurant of their own. This, in turn, will inspire entrepreneurs to both want to offer—and expect—this same level of authenticity in future business ventures. As we look to continue to grow our footprint nationwide, we are seeking franchisees who are interested in offering an authentic French experience to new communities. About Jane shobe: Jane, Franchisee of Expedia Cruises in Laguna Niguel, California. A previous Executive Assistant, Jane made a career leap to pursue her passion for travel, and has built a thriving business in the industry. Starting as a Luxury Cruise & Vacation Planner, she developed her skillset in customer service and travel planning, eventually becoming the owner of Expedia Cruises in Laguna Niguel.
Starting a business is an exciting experience, filled with endless opportunities and possibilities. From designing your store’s layout to planning your grand opening, every decision feels like a step toward realizing a dream. However, reality can quickly set in. Sales may slow, bills pile up, and doubt creeps in – leading many entrepreneurs to question whether their business can truly succeed in the long run.
It is natural for both new and seasoned franchisees to experience fear, anxiety, or uncertainty along the way. The good news is that fear does not have to control your future. There are actionable strategies to guide you through tough moments, and with the right mindset, you can turn selfdoubt into a driving force for success. Here are four key pieces of advice to help you conquer your fears and stay on the path toward profitability.
transparency is key
From the moment you start your business, transparency should become a core value in your day-to-day operations. Transparency is not just about sharing information; it is all about setting clear expectations and ensuring everyone on your team understands the goals and what
is required to achieve them. Being upfront and direct about performance expectations, compensation details, and even the challenges your franchise faces is crucial for building trust within your team.
When employees know where they stand and feel included in the decisionmaking process, it promotes a culture of collaboration and accountability. Transparency allows you to address potential issues before they become larger problems, ensuring the business stays on track. When your employees feel confident and secure in their roles, they are more likely to contribute positively to the franchise’s success. This kind of environment also encourages open communication, which can help reduce any anxiety around performance and build a sense of alignment across the business.
Prioritize consistent Advertising and Recruiting
Attracting new clients and building a reliable team are two essential components for long-term success in any business, regardless of industry. One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a franchisee is assuming that once you have established a customer base or built your team, you can take a break. Consistent advertising and recruiting efforts are critical to ensure that your business keeps growing and evolving.
You need to stay visible and active in your outreach to attract both customers and employees. For example, wearing your company’s branded apparel can spark conversations with potential clients and team members wherever you go. This simple tactic helps you remain top of mind and build a network of people who are interested in what your franchise has to offer.
Regularly dedicating time and resources to marketing and recruiting encourages continuous growth for your franchise. It prevents stagnation and helps ease any fear that may arise when business growth slows. Whether through digital marketing, networking events, or word-of-mouth referrals, staying consistent in advertising and recruiting will help your business continue to move forward.
keep up with new technology
Given the abundance of options available to consumers, businesses must always look for ways to improve operations through technology. This is especially true for franchisees, who need to embrace new tools and technologies that streamline operations, enhance the customer experience, ensure consistency across locations, and provide a competitive edge in their industry.
For example, using digital platforms to host seminars or share insights can help you reach a broader audience and engage potential clients in meaningful ways. These resources also allow you to optimize internal operations, from managing bookings and analyzing sales data to improving communication with your team.

By adopting new technology, you can free up valuable time to focus on growing your franchise, rather than getting bogged down in administrative tasks.
It is common to feel hesitant about new technology, especially when it is initially introduced, but you need to view these advancements as opportunities. By staying open to learning and adapting, you can leverage technology to drive creativity, connectivity, and innovation in your business.
Find Your Balance
Being a franchisee can be demanding, and it is easy to fall into the trap of working around the clock to avoid failure. However, taking time for yourself is essential to avoid burnout and stay committed to the long-term success of your business. Finding a sustainable work-life balance will not only help you recharge but also improve your decision-making and ability to focus when you are on the clock.
Whether this means setting aside personal time for family, hobbies, or self-care, taking regular breaks ensures that you return to your business with a refreshed mindset. A well-rested franchisee is a more effective leader, able to tackle challenges with a clearer perspective and more creativity. Without this balance, you can lose sight of why you got into franchising in the first place and risk burning out before reaching your goals.
Remember that business success is a marathon, not a sprint. By incorporating personal time into your schedule, you will maintain your energy and avoid exhaustion, ultimately fostering a sustainable dedication to your business through the ups and downs.
The fear of business failure is something that every entrepreneur faces at one point or another. However, it does not have to be a roadblock. By embracing transparency, staying consistent with advertising and recruiting, leveraging new technology, and prioritizing work-life balance, you can turn your fear into motivation for long-term growth. v

Breaking Barriers:
cH ri SS y vander w yde’S j ourney to Leader SH ip in franc H i S ing
In the ever-evolving world of franchising, few stories stand out as powerfully as that of Chrissy VanderWyde. As Vice President of Franchise Relations at PuroClean, a leading property restoration and remediation franchise, Chrissy is not only a trailblazer but a force for change in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
Her journey—one that began over three decades ago—serves as an inspiration for all, proving that passion, perseverance, and a people-first mindset can carve a path to success.
A Humble Beginning

In 1988, PuroClean was still in its infancy, not yet a franchise, when Chrissy joined as the company’s first employee—and its first female employee. At the time, she didn’t think of herself as a “first” in any sense. She was simply eager to work, to learn, and to grow. Coming from the restaurant industry, with experience at well-known franchise brands like Dairy Queen, Pizzeria uno, and TGi Friday’s, she had already developed critical skills in teamwork, communication, and customer service. These skills would become the foundation of her decades-long career in franchising.
But her path to PuroClean wasn’t meticulously planned. She met the company’s founder through his son. The founder recognized her people skills, leading him to offer her an opportunity to join the emerging brand. That one invitation changed the trajectory of her career. She took the opportunity and ran with it, determined to make an impact. Unlike many of her peers, Chrissy took an unconventional path—she obtained her GeD instead of following the traditional high school graduation route. Despite not attending college, she worked tirelessly to educate herself through practical knowledge, overcoming challenges and defying expectations to rise to the top of her field.
Forging a career in Franchising
Chrissy quickly realized that franchising was more than just a business model— it was a gateway to entrepreneurship, financial independence, and personal fulfillment. She immersed herself in the world of franchising, learning through hands-on experience, trial and error, and an unshakable commitment to growth. Today, she proudly serves as a key leader on PuroClean’s executive team, helping to drive the success of a thriving franchise network of nearly 500 locations across north America.
Her role as Vice President of Franchise Relations is multifaceted. She ensures that PuroClean’s Franchise Owners have
the support, resources, and guidance they need to succeed. But more than that, she champions diversity and inclusion, actively encouraging more women, minorities, and individuals unfamiliar with franchising to explore opportunities in the industry. “It isn’t difficult for me to share my trials and errors, to help others bypass my missteps,” Chrissy says. “I believe in paying it forward.”
Women Making their Mark in Restoration
The restoration industry has long been perceived as male-dominated. But times are changing, and Chrissy has played a pivotal role in driving that change within PuroClean. Four years ago, the company awarded its first-ever Female Technician of the Year—an achievement that once seemed groundbreaking but is now becoming the norm. Today, more women than ever are entering the restoration field, excelling as technicians, franchise owners, and industry leaders.
Chrissy is especially proud of PuroClean’s PuroWomen’s Growth Group, an initiative designed to mentor and support women in the network. This group fosters a strong community where women at all levels— whether Franchise Owners, technicians, or Home office team members—can collaborate, share ideas, and uplift one another. “We are creating a space where women don’t just succeed but thrive,” she says.
A culture of service and support
Chrissy’s leadership is deeply rooted in values of service, teamwork, and resilience. PuroClean’s franchise model isn’t just about business; it’s about helping people in their most vulnerable moments—after fires, floods, and other property disasters. That same commitment to service extends beyond customers and into the franchise network itself.
She recalls a defining moment that exemplifies the brand’s culture: During the 9/11 attacks, PuroClean’s annual Convention was taking place. As flights were grounded and attendees were stranded, local Franchise Owners didn’t

Chrissy believes in leading with authenticity. She embraces collaboration, encourages innovation, and—perhaps most importantly—knows when to step back and allow others to shine. “I’ve learned to let go of the perception of control, letting others do what they think is right and seeing the process unfold,” she reflects. “It’s taking us from great to remarkable.”
Her career is a testament to the fact that success in franchising—or any industry—is not dictated by a traditional path but by passion, resilience, and an unwavering belief in people. And as more women step into leadership roles, build franchise brands, and redefine the industry, Chrissy VanderWyde stands as a beacon of what’s possible.
Her story is not just about breaking barriers; it’s about building bridges for others to cross. And for the next generation of women in franchising, she’s holding the door wide open. v

Innovation in Product offerings

One of our most exciting developments was the introduction of a macadamia nut-based ice cream that is vegan, gluten-free and free from alternative sugars. Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we plan to roll out this option to more locations this year.
We recognize that dietary restrictions and
preferences are becoming a bigger factor in consumers' decision-making processes, and we want to ensure that everyone can enjoy our fresh, customizable ice cream. Whether it’s dairy-free, no-sugar-added or glutenfree options, we are constantly innovating to provide choices that cater to all of our customers.
Bringing chill- n to More customers nationwide

Meet high school sweethearts Kimberley and Anthony Clark, who have been together for 37 years and turned a lifetime of love and shared dreams into a thriving business in Sandy Springs, GA.
k imberley and Anthony’s bond began in high school as self-proclaimed “band geeks,” and their partnership grew beyond music into marriage, raising three sons, and a mutual dream of business ownership. For years, they kept a notebook by their bed filled with ideas—but between corporate careers and family life, those dreams remained on hold.
seizing the Perfect Moment
k imberley firmly believes that Painting with a Twist found her. Her journey began when she was searching for a fun, quick activity to host a birthday event at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unbeknownst to her, the painting experience she created at home mirrored the exact atmosphere of a Painting with a Twist event, despite having no prior connection with the brand. Captivated by the experience she and her friends enjoyed,
kimberley and anthony clark from high school sweethearts to Business partners

k imberley couldn't shake the feeling that this was something special, leading her to inquire about the franchise opportunity. So, k imberley reached out, and the rest as they say, is history. To the Clark’s, all the stars were aligning —finding their dream home and business in such close succession. They took the leap to become owners of the studio in 2023. And today, they have acquired a second studio and are building a third brand new studio in the area.
leveraging corporate skills for creative ownership
Before taking the plunge into business ownership, both k imberley and Anthony had successful corporate careers that helped shape their approach to their new venture. Anthony spent decades in finance with Fortune 500 companies, which has given him the skills to manage the financial side of their business. k imberley, with over 25 years of experience in HR within the healthcare and tech industries, knew that after the challenges of COVID, it was time for a change. With their children starting to leave the nest, she was ready to step away from corporate life and pursue a new path with Anthony.
now, k imberley works in the studio full-time while Anthony continues his corporate career. They’ve strategically balanced their roles, with k imberley handling front-of-house operations and Anthony overseeing finances and logistics. Their corporate experience has proven invaluable—helping them navigate the world of business ownership with confidence and authenticity.
One of the most rewarding parts of their journey has been realizing just how much their corporate skills have translated into running a business. They didn’t realize how much they knew until they had to apply it outside the corporate world. k imberley, who once thrived in the stiff, buttoned-up world of corporate life, has totally shaken off the formalities and is now the studio's resident fun-loving spirit, showing the world that you can be successful being yourself and have a blast doing it!
Making Business and Marriage Work
Working together as business owners has been an exciting challenge for k imberley and Anthony, but their decades-long partnership has prepared them well. They’ve learned that strong communication
“ What began as a fun and unexpected opportunity has now become a fulfilling chapter in their lives, where they can finally apply everything they’ve learned in their corporate careers to a business they truly love.”
is essential—especially since k imberley runs the studio full-time while Anthony balances his corporate career. His fresh perspective helps them problemsolve when needed, while k imberley keeps things running day-to-day. While juggling business and personal life can be challenging—often blending into one— they embrace it, believing that when you love what you do, the lines don’t always need to be rigid.
Still, over the past four to five years, they’ve made a point to carve out time for fun outside the business, attending plays, musicals, and jazz performances together. Having raised three boys, they’ve learned to laugh often, not sweat the small stuff, and tackle challenges with a sense of humor—lessons that serve them just as well in business as they have in life.
Building their Dream, one Brushstroke at a time
For k imberley and Anthony, owning a Painting with a Twist franchise has been the culmination of years of hard work, careful planning, and following their passion. What began as a fun and unexpected opportunity has now become a fulfilling chapter in their lives, where they can finally apply everything they've learned in their corporate careers to a business they truly love. Their journey demonstrates that stepping away from corporate America doesn’t mean starting from scratch—sometimes, it means finally putting years of experience to use in a way that brings joy, fulfillment, and lasting success. It’s a testament to the fact that when the timing is right, the leap to entrepreneurship can lead to both personal and professional fulfillment. v

DeI: A HIstoRIcAl

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 2007 and 2012, franchise ownership rates increased by 50% for women and historically underrepresented groups. Additionally, by 2012, more than 30% of franchises were minority-owned, compared to just 18.8% of non-franchised businesses. These statistics show that franchising has long been a way for diverse entrepreneurs to build wealth and success.
Matthew Haller, President and CEO of the International Franchise Association (IFA), highlights why diversity in franchising is essential:
“We say we are an industry that takes people from everywhere and can make them successful with the right support in a franchise system. We want to make sure that the industry and the franchisees that make up this franchising ecosystem reflect that message and make that more of a reality.”
This commitment to inclusion is evident in programs like VetFran, an initiative by the IFA that helps military veterans transition into franchise ownership. Since its founding, VetFran has helped thousands of veterans become successful franchise owners by offering financial assistance, training, and mentorship. Veterans bring leadership, discipline, and teamwork skills to franchising, making them highly successful business owners.

Franchising is more than just a business model—it’s a pathway to opportunity that allows individuals from all backgrounds to achieve business ownership and financial success. Franchising thrives on collaboration, teamwork, and shared success. Therefore, it follows logically that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are part of its DNA.

A successful franchise system is one where everyone—franchisors, franchisees, employees, and customers—feels valued, supported, and included.
Diversity: A key Driver of growth
Franchise systems that embrace diversity in ownership, leadership, and employee teams outperform those that don’t. They enjoy:
• An expanded customer baseA diverse franchise team better understands the needs of a broader range of customers.
• Greater innovation – The different perspectives that result from diversity cultivate new ideas and improved business strategies.
• Customer loyalty - Customers support businesses that reflect and understand their needs.
equity: the Foundation of Franchise success
Franchisors must take pains to ensure that every franchisee, regardless of location, background, or tenure, has equal access to training, support, and opportunities for growth. Without equity, a franchise system risks creating resentment and disengagement among its franchisees, leading to distrust and inefficiencies.
For example, if some franchisees receive more support or marketing benefits than others, the result will be an imbalance in the system. In contrast, a fair and transparent franchisor-franchisee relationship promotes cooperation and long-term success.
Franchisees, in turn, must commit to equitable treatment of their employees. Fair pay, equal opportunities for advancement, and respect in the workplace are critical to employee retention and workplace harmony.
When employees feel valued and treated fairly, they are more engaged, motivated, and committed to providing excellent customer service.
Inclusion: creating a culture of engagement
When inclusion is a priority, franchises operate more smoothly, employees are more engaged, and customer satisfaction improves.
A strong culture of inclusion is built on the belief that everyone’s ideas and contributions matter. Franchise brands that actively seek input from franchisees, employees, and customers create a stronger, more engaged community.
For franchisors, inclusion can mean:
• Establishing franchisee advisory councils where owners can provide feedback and participate in decisionmaking.
• Encouraging open communication between corporate leadership and franchisees to ensure shared success.
• Hosting networking events and mentorship programs to foster relationships across different backgrounds.
For franchisees, inclusion means:
• Creating a work environment where everyone, regardless of background, has opportunities for career growth.
• Ensuring all employees feel free to contribute ideas to improve operations and customer experience.
• Implementing inclusive hiring practices to attract diverse talent that reflects the community served.
Franchising’s commitment to DeI
The franchise industry continues to make significant progress in diversity, equity, and inclusion. A recent survey by Franchise Business Review (August 2024) highlights the growing commitment to DEI:
"Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion continues to be a priority. The franchise industry continues to make strides in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Survey results show that 85% of employees feel their company values diversity, while 88% believe their coworkers actively contribute to an inclusive environment."
the Business case for DeI in Franchising
Ultimately, a franchise system that is fair, inclusive, and diverse is one that is poised for long-term success.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just trends - they are integral to the success and sustainability of the franchising industry. Equity ensures fairness, inclusion fosters engagement, and diversity fuels innovation. Dei is embedded into the very DnA of franchising, strengthening its future and building a more inclusive, profitable, and sustainable path for all. v

Franchise expansion often hinges on operational success. Traditionally, franchisees wait until their first location is up and running before considering additional investments. However, a new wave of confidence has emerged within the franchise community, exemplified by GLO30, the nation’s fastest-growing subscription-based skincare studio.
Before opening their first location, several GLo30 franchisees committed to expanding their footprint, signing deals for an additional 26 locations combined. This unprecedented enthusiasm raises the question: How can brands inspire franchisees to double down before even opening their doors?
Tyler Moore, Coo of GLo30, sheds light on this unique phenomenon and shares
“ Look for franchisees who aren’t just looking for a business opportunity, but ones who are passionate about the industry and the brand.”
actionable insights for other brands aiming to foster similar pre-launch growth.
1Build a Resilient Business Model that Meets consumer Demand
Confidence starts with a strong foundation. For franchisees to feel secure about early expansion, they need assurance that the business model is both profitable and

scalable. This means offering a product or service with proven consumer demand. To build a strong and scalable business model, you need to identify a clear market gap and address it with a solution that meets consumer needs. For example, at GLo30, we’ve embraced the growing demand for personalized skincare by introducing a subscription-based model to fill the market gap. The key is to design an approach that not only meets customer expectations but also instills confidence in franchisees. When franchisees see proven demand and a framework designed for success, they are more likely to trust the concept and commit to growth.
Key takeaway: Conduct thorough market research and pilot testing to validate the scalability of your business model. Showcase the results with real-world data to solidify franchisee confidence.
2Attract Passionate Franchisees Who Align with the Brand vision
The best franchisees are more than investors—they’re believers in the brand’s mission. A shared vision ignites

momentum and encourages franchisees to invest in long-term growth.
Look for franchisees who aren’t just looking for a business opportunity, but ones who are passionate about the industry and the brand. This alignment can instill a confidence in franchisees to sign multi-unit agreements before they open their first set of doors. To attract franchisees who believe in your brand vision, it’s important to prioritize transparency and authenticity in your messaging. Franchisees want to feel like they’re part of something meaningful. When they believe in the brand’s purpose, they’re more likely to see themselves as long-term partners.
Key takeaway: Seek out franchisees whose values and goals align with your brand. When passion and purpose intersect, it’s easier to inspire early and sustained investment.
3emphasize Profitability and long-term growth Potential
For many franchisees, the decision to expand comes down to the bottom line. They need clear evidence of profitability and a roadmap for sustained growth.
Brands must make it a priority to be transparent about the financial potential of each location, sharing tangible examples and projections. When franchisees see a clear path to success, they’re not only more likely to invest in one location but also to double down on their investment. Early expansion also brings competitive advantages, like securing prime territories and establishing a stronger market presence.
Key takeaway: Provide franchisees with detailed financial data and growth strategies. Demonstrating profitability and long-term potential motivates them to make bigger commitments earlier.
4Provide Robust training and ongoing support
grow. From operational best practices to marketing strategies, the right training sets franchisees up for success. Additionally, fostering a collaborative culture—where franchisees can share insights and learn from one another—strengthens the system.
Key takeaway: Equip franchisees with robust training and support systems. When they feel confident in their ability to succeed, they’re more likely to commit to growth.
Why this Matters for the Franchise Industry
The ability to inspire franchisees to expand before opening their first location is a testament to the strength of a brand’s model and vision. It’s a rare but powerful dynamic that accelerates growth and solidifies a brand’s position in the market. When franchisees trust the brand, the leadership, and the business model, they’re willing to make bold moves.
Focus on building a resilient business model, attracting aligned franchisees, emphasizing profitability, and delivering unparalleled support. By doing so, you can create an environment where franchisees feel confident investing in your brand’s future—even before opening day.
the Road Ahead
Anything is possible when the right framework is in place. For franchise leaders looking to replicate this success, the message is simple: Lay the groundwork for trust and confidence, and growth will follow.
Confidence in the brand’s support system is crucial for franchisees considering early expansion. When they feel equipped with the right tools and resources, they’re more likely to invest in multiple locations. Implementing comprehensive training programs and ongoing support are pivotal for success. It’s especially important to focus on preparing franchisees not just to open their location, but to succeed and “ To build a strong and scalable business model, you need to identify a clear market gap and address it with a solution that meets consumer needs. For example, at GLO30, we’ve embraced the growing demand for personalized skincare by introducing a subscription-based model to fill the market gap.”
Early expansion isn’t just about bold franchisees. It’s about creating a brand that’s worth believing in. v

Katung Aduwak’s partnership with the senior care franchise is driven by a need for professional independence and a desire to “leave a legacy of dignity and care.”

For Katung Aduwak, becoming a franchisee with Right at Home was not just a business decision — it was a deeply personal journey inspired by life-altering experiences. After surviving a severe accident and undergoing a challenging recovery, Aduwak realized the transformative power of compassionate care.
“If it was not for the excellent care that I
got from caregivers and from my family, I would not have made it,” he said. This realization, coupled with a desire to build a sustainable and meaningful business with his partner, Tanya Bridges, led him to the senior care franchise.
Right at Home, a global leader in in-home senior care, resonated deeply with Aduwak and Bridges. Their franchise, located in Tukwila, Washington, opened its doors on november 16, 2024, and now serves the Greater Southern Seattle area. For Aduwak, this venture represents much more than a business; it’s a mission to

impact lives positively and leave behind a legacy defined by dignity and care.
A life Before Franchising
Aduwak’s path to franchising is as diverse as it is inspiring. His academic background is in political science with a specialization in international relations and diplomacy, but his true passion always lay in the arts. A creative at heart, Aduwak pursued film and became a director after gaining fame as the winner of “Big Brother nigeria” in 2006. He directed music videos, documentaries, and feature films but found that sustaining a creative career often required additional financial backing.
“I thought chasing my passions would feed me and give me the sustainable life I wanted,” Aduwak said. “But I learned I needed to roll up my sleeves and do hard work to finance my dreams.” This pragmatic realization led him to the tech industry, where he worked as a database administrator and later transitioned to a scrum master. These roles were lucrative but came at the cost of immense stress and sleepless nights.
The turning point came when Aduwak and Bridges decided they no longer wanted to work for others. “We wanted to own our own business, build it into a well-oiled machine, and then step back to enjoy the fruits of our labor,” he said. This shared vision led them to franchising, a model

that allowed them to leverage established systems while pursuing their passion for meaningful work.
A Dynamic Partnership
Aduwak’s partner, Bridges, is an integral part of their business journey. The pair’s connection dates back to their meeting 15 years ago in new york during Aduwak’s film school days. Though they initially dated briefly, life took them in different directions. Aduwak married, had a son, and later divorced amicably. Bridges, meanwhile, built a distinguished career in law and business development, working for major companies like eSPn, Comcast, and Google.
Bridges brings her expertise to their Right at Home franchise as the manager of billing and payments, while Aduwak focuses on marketing, caregiver relationships, and community engagement. “It’s a great partnership,” Aduwak said, emphasizing the complementary nature of their skill sets.
Why Right at Home?
When exploring franchise opportunities, Aduwak and Bridges initially considered food franchises, even advancing to the fourth stage of Chick-fil-A’s process before opting out. It was Franchise City, a franchise consulting group, that broadened their perspective, introducing them to
the wide array of industries franchising encompasses. Right at Home stood out for its mentorship culture, proven business model, and mission-driven approach.
“The feedback from other franchise owners was outstanding,” Aduwak said. “They consistently praised the mentorship, leadership, and profitability of the business.” Discovery Week, a rigorous vetting process, further solidified their decision. “Right at Home genuinely cares at every level,” he said. “The margins are solid, but they reflect the hard work required. This isn’t a business you can fake.”
Building a legacy
Aduwak’s goals for his Right at Home franchise are twofold: personal growth and business expansion. On a personal level, he and Bridges are committed to enhancing the quality of life for the seniors they serve. “This business requires emotional resilience,” Aduwak said. “It’s tough to see clients deteriorate or pass away, but we want to give our all and leave a legacy of dignity and care.”
From a business perspective, Aduwak plans to expand into more territories and create job opportunities for others. “We want to create opportunities for those who might not have had the advantages we had,” he said.
Founded in 1995, Right at Home offers in-home care to seniors and adults with disabilities who want to live independently. Most Right at Home offices are independently owned and operated and directly employ and supervise all caregiving staff. Each caregiver is thoroughly screened, trained, and bonded/insured before entering a client’s home. Right at Home’s global office is based in Omaha, Nebraska, with more than 700 franchise locations in the U.S. and four other countries.

lessons learned
one of Aduwak’s most significant takeaways from franchising is the importance of following the system. “Success in franchising depends on following the system,” he said. “If you put in the work, the system works. Franchising isn’t an easy ticket to wealth — it requires effort, patience, and adaptability.”
This mindset extends to his hands-on approach. Aduwak is training to become a caregiver to understand the daily challenges his staff faces. “k nowing these pain points helps me manage them better and build a stronger team,” he said.
Advice for Aspiring Franchise Owners
For those considering franchising, Aduwak’s advice is clear: “Do your homework. Franchising is not a ‘set it and forget it’ model. understand the fine print and every angle of the business.” He emphasized the need for commitment and adaptability, noting that franchising is not for the impatient or faint-hearted.
A Journey of Resilience
Aduwak’s journey is defined by resilience. Surviving a near-fatal accident that required two brain surgeries and a long recovery gave him a renewed perspective on life. “Learning how to walk again and regaining my independence was lifechanging,” he said. “it made me realize the importance of resilience, family, and the care I received.”
This second chance fuels his desire to give back and leave a meaningful legacy. “I want to impact people’s lives positively and die empty, having used all my potential,” Aduwak said. v

One of the most common mantras we hear in entrepreneurial circles is that small businesses are “the backbone of the U.S. economy.” This truth may be even more evident in rural areas, which are fast becoming an attractive target market for the franchising industry.
Is it a smart play? Time will tell, but the facts and evidence certainly make a good case. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses in rural America account for nearly 85% of all establishments and generally employ more than half of the local population.
Entrepreneurship isn’t any less popular in rural areas than in urban cores and, as you’ll see, could be fertile ground for franchise growth as the industry closes in on the goal of one million establishments in the U.S.
Before we dig in, let’s review the latest industry prognostications from the recently released Franchise Economic Outlook Report, co-authored by the International Franchise Association (IFA) and F r A ndata. each year, this dynamic duo works in collaboration to apply analytical methodology to predict industry growth across a wide spectrum of industries. In the overall snapshot, franchising is predicted to expand to over 850,000 establishments –an increase of 2.5%. On the jobs front, it’s
expected to add over 200,000 new jobs for a growth rate of 2.4% and total franchise output is projected to exceed $936 billion in 2025, a 4.4% year-over-year increase. By any definition, these statistics are indeed a promising start.
An underdeveloped Market
It’s not that the franchising industry has typically favored urban areas over rural ones, but the 80-20 population advantage for urban areas is undoubtedly a strong draw. The attractive demographic densities that reside the most coveted of urban territories are often too hard to resist. But in rural areas, demographics are also shifting. A large cross section of the rural population is aging out, while at the same
time the younger generation is vacating –creating a void where new opportunities are not only possible, but probable. Over the past two decades, rural America was hit hard in quick succession with the Great Recession and pandemic taking their toll. Shops and businesses up and down Main Street USA felt the brunt of the impact. But lately – if you’ve been paying attention –change is afoot. Rural America remains a largely untapped and undeveloped market for franchise growth and expansion.
the Winds of change Begin to Blow
What’s driving the optimism for franchise expansion in rural America? In a word, investment. And one of the best examples of those leading the charge is the Center on rural i nnovation (Cori ), a nonprofit founded in 2017. CORI’s primary mission is to build a future of high tech communities that support scalable entrepreneurship in areas with decidedly smaller demographics. The two most interesting words in that description for franchisors? Scalable entrepreneurship. Thanks to the bipartisan passed 2022 CHIPS and Science Act and the quest to proliferate high-speed internet service, rural areas are poised to gain back much of their lost ground. In a perfect world, these opportunities are designed to help rural communities expand beyond their traditional industries, reduce the brain drain exodus, and restore an equitable foundation capable of supporting entrepreneurial ventures in small town America.
How Franchising can Fill the gap(s)
Rural areas bore the brunt of both recent economic downturns, with a loss of many retail, food, and personal service businesses up and down the town square. Left in its wake is a massive void of underserved industries and business sectors. on the flipside, there remains an abundant supply of competitively priced commercial real estate and the opportunity for franchisors to target these rural areas to fill badly needed gaps. entrepreneurship is equally attractive to rural residents and

he

it’s common knowledge that there are three pathways to becoming your own boss – build, buy, or join. Of these three options, only franchising offers a proven business model, comprehensive training, and close-knit, ongoing support – all of which contribute to stability and a better shot at success. Another plus is the consortium of available resources in the form of consulting assistance, mentoring, stewardship, grants, loan programs, apprenticeships, and other creative funding sources working in concert to kick start and advance rural economic growth. These and other initiatives, such as the popular $5 billion “Investing in America” agenda, have been earmarked to help rural communities usher in a new dawn of prosperity.
People who willingly choose to live, work,
and raise families in the rural communities of our great nation do so because they love their small hometowns and are deeply committed to protecting their way of life. To continue thriving, they will need continued access to capital and the chance to pursue entrepreneurial pursuits with the same opportunities afforded to their urban counterparts. To borrow a common rural refrain, that’s not to say this venture will be an “easy row to hoe.” In reality, it could be an uphill battle - much more difficult than simply mining for qualified candidates on Linked i n. But with a dedicated approach over time, it’s entirely possible for the franchise community to step in, step up, and help Main Street uSA flourish once again.
Simply put, we owe it to them to give it our best shot. v

innovative m arketing Strategie S for franc H i S e S in tH e d igitaL age

The digital age has fundamentally reshaped how businesses connect with their audiences, and franchises are no exception. With the rise of social media, search engines, and data analytics, the opportunities to expand a franchise’s reach have never been greater. However, the unique structure of franchises, a network of independent locations unified under a single brand, requires a tailored approach to marketing.
Success lies in balancing national brand consistency with localized strategies that resonate with individual communities.
In this feature, innovative marketing strategies that empower franchises to thrive in today’s digital landscape are explored, offering actionable insights to help businesses maximize their reach, resonance, and results.
the changing Face of Franchise Marketing
Franchise marketing has always required a dual focus: building brand equity while driving foot traffic to individual locations. Traditionally, this was achieved through mass advertising campaigns, print media, and local promotions. But the digital age
has introduced powerful new tools, from targeted social media ads to hyper-local search engine optimization (Seo) - that enable franchises to connect with their audiences more effectively.
one of the most significant shifts is the rise of consumer expectations for personalized and relevant content. Today’s customers expect seamless interactions with a brand across all touchpoints, from social media to their neighborhood storefront. For franchises, this means developing strategies that are both consistent and adaptable, leveraging digital channels to enhance local engagement while maintaining the integrity of the overall brand.
Maintaining Brand cohesion in a Digital World
A common challenge for franchises is ensuring brand consistency across multiple locations. Inconsistent branding not only confuses customers but can also dilute the brand’s identity. To address this, franchises must invest in centralized tools and platforms that streamline branding efforts.
Digital asset management (DAM) systems, for example, allow franchises to provide local operators with pre-approved marketing materials, such as logos, templates, and campaign guidelines. This ensures that each location’s marketing efforts align with the broader brand strategy while allowing for localized customization. Additionally, training franchisees in digital marketing best practices helps maintain cohesion and empowers local operators to implement campaigns effectively.
Harnessing the Power of local seo
Local Seo is a game-changer for franchises, enabling individual locations to dominate search results in their respective areas. When consumers search for terms like “coffee shop near me” or “fast food restaurant in [city],” optimized local pages ensure your franchise locations appear prominently.

onn torossian is the Founder & Chairman of 5W Public relations, one of the largest independently-owned r firms in the united states. since founding 5WPr in 2003, he has led the company’s growth and vision, with the agency earning accolades including being named a Top 50 g lobal Pr Agency by Provoke Media, a top three nyC Pr agency by O’Dwyers, one of Inc. Magazine’s Best Workplaces and being awarded multiple American Business Awards, including a stevie Award for Pr Agency of the year.
Franchises should focus on optimizing Google Business Profiles (GBP) for each location. This includes ensuring accurate and consistent information, such as addresses, phone numbers, and operating hours. Adding high-quality photos, encouraging customer reviews, and regularly updating GBP listings with promotions or events can also boost visibility. Leveraging location-specific keywords, such as “[city] family dining” or “[neighborhood] fitness gym,” further enhances search rankings.
social Media: Balancing corporate and local engagement
Social media platforms offer unparalleled opportunities for franchises to connect with their audiences, but they also present challenges. Should the corporate team manage all social media accounts, or should local franchisees take the reins? The
“ Content marketing is another essential strategy for franchises looking to build lasting relationships with their audiences. Blogs, videos, and social media posts that address customer pain points or showcase behind-the-scenes stories can enhance engagement and trust.”
answer lies in a hybrid approach. Corporate-level accounts can drive brand awareness and share nationwide campaigns, while local accounts engage with community-specific audiences. For example, a corporate account might launch a new menu item, while individual locations share posts about local events or customer spotlights. Tools like social media management platforms enable franchises to schedule and monitor posts across multiple accounts, ensuring consistency and minimizing errors.

Successful franchises also understand the power of paid social media advertising. Geotargeting allows businesses to deliver ads to specific demographics within a defined radius, ensuring that promotions reach the right audience. For instance, a franchise restaurant could target users within five miles of a new location to announce its grand opening.
content Marketing for connection and conversion
Content marketing is another essential strategy for franchises looking to build lasting relationships with their audiences. Blogs, videos, and social media posts that address customer pain points or showcase behind-the-scenes stories can enhance engagement and trust.
For example, a fitness franchise might publish blog posts about workout tips, while a home improvement brand could create video tutorials on DIY projects. These efforts position the brand as a helpful resource, increasing the likelihood that customers will choose them when making a purchase decision.
Localized content is particularly effective for franchises. Sharing stories about community involvement, highlighting local employees, or featuring customer
testimonials from specific locations creates a sense of connection and loyalty. Incorporating keywords relevant to the local area also boosts search visibility.
embracing Data-Driven Decision Making
Data analytics has revolutionized marketing, providing insights that were previously unimaginable. Franchises can now track the performance of campaigns in real-time, measure customer behavior, and refine strategies based on data.
key performance indicators ( k Pis) such as website traffic, conversion rates, and customer acquisition costs help franchises understand what works and what doesn’t.
Tools like Google Analytics and Cr M platforms allow businesses to collect and analyze data from multiple locations, ensuring that marketing efforts are both efficient and effective.
collaborating with Franchisees for success
The relationship between corporate teams and franchisees is critical to marketing success. Corporate teams should provide franchisees with the tools, training, and support needed to execute campaigns effectively. Regular communication, such
as webinars or newsletters, ensures that everyone stays informed about marketing initiatives and best practices.
Incentive programs can also motivate franchisees to participate actively in marketing efforts. For instance, recognizing locations with the highest customer engagement on social media or the best Google reviews fosters a spirit of collaboration and healthy competition.
In the digital age, innovative marketing strategies are essential for franchises looking to stand out in a competitive marketplace. By maintaining brand cohesion, leveraging local SEO, embracing social media, and utilizing data-driven insights, franchises can build strong connections with their audiences while driving growth across multiple locations. Collaboration between corporate teams and franchisees further amplifies these efforts, ensuring that every location contributes to the brand’s success.
Franchises that adapt to the digital landscape not only meet the expectations of today’s consumers but also position themselves for long-term success. In this era of endless possibilities, the brands that innovate and connect will undoubtedly lead the way. v

Cornwell Tools believe individuals from diverse backgrounds can successfully operate a mobile tool franchise. They offer a comprehensive training program to get you started on the right foot.
cornwell tools - 105 Years and going strong
Cornwell Quality Tools has been “The Choice of Professionals®” since 1919. For 105 years, they’ve built a reputation for producing the best tools and equipment around, trusted by professionals across the automotive, heavy-duty, and related repair industries. They proudly manufacture quality tools and storage equipment that’s built to last and make it convenient for automotive technicians and shops to purchase what they need, so they can spend more time focusing on getting their job done. Cornwell Tools franchisees have become the go-to source for these professionals in their communities, offering them the tools and equipment they want at competitive prices. Franchise owners provide excellent, reliable customer service, meeting the demand as they expand and manage all aspects of their tool truck franchise.
“As great as our mobile franchise is for dealers, it’s even better for their customers. They love that Cornwell Tools dealers come right to them, so they don’t have to
take time out of their busy schedules to shop for tools,” said Andy Scott, Director of Sales. “Many customers are in the auto repair field, and when a tool breaks, they often need it replaced right away. They appreciate that their local dealer is just a phone call away and can quickly show up to their shop with new (and improved) replacements. They also see excellent value in dealers regularly stopping by to help them select new tools and equipment designed to get the job done.”
Financial Advantages For veterans
Cornwell Tools stands out by not charging an initial franchise fee. For veterans, they offer the standard $80,000 initial inventory purchase with 0% interest to qualified applicants. The potential savings in interest alone over the six-year term, assuming all program requirements are met, could total over $35,000.
This represents a significant advantage for any veteran looking to finance a portion of their initial investment.
This saving helps veterans start their new careers on a strong financial footing, ensuring a smoother transition to their new roles.
creating a sense of Belonging for veterans
For veterans, the sense of team and family is a cornerstone of their time in service. However, this connection can be lost once they transition to civilian life. At Cornwell Tools, they understand this need for camaraderie and provide an atmosphere that rekindles that sense of belonging. Their career opportunities offer veterans a supportive community that mirrors the values they cherished in the military.
The Cornwell Tools team is proud to have created a business model that ranks among the top available franchise opportunities for veterans. The team aims to make every new franchisee feel like they are a valuable part of the family and help them create a business venture that they can be proud to call their own. Teddy Herskovits, Cornwell Tools Dealer, Virginia
“After spending six years in the navy as an Aircraft Structural Mechanic, I had concerns about finding a team-oriented work environment. Transitioning into civilian life was a big change, and I wasn’t sure if i would be able to find a workplace that felt as close-knit and supportive as the team culture I experienced in the military. However, when I became a franchisee dealer with Cornwell, i quickly realized that I had found exactly what I was looking for - a company that truly fosters a family atmosphere. I could not have done it without my wife, who is also a navy vet. Together, we’ve navigated this transition, and her support and partnership have been invaluable as we build this new chapter. It’s been incredibly rewarding to be part of a team where collaboration, trust, and camaraderie are at the core of our work.”
Anthony Huggett, Cornwell Tools Dealer, Georgia
“After my transition from military life, I worked at several car dealerships. It was at one that i met my first Cornwell Tools dealer. After talking with him for months, I decided to reach out and see if a Cornwell franchise was for me. My wife and I sat down for dinner with who would become my District Manager, who promptly

answered all our questions and potential concerns. There were two things that really made me start a Cornwell franchise – one, Cornwell was a family-owned business, and two, being a disabled combat veteran i qualified for an interest free loan. i have found my home, family, and my team. I am excited to grow my own business with the help and support from Cornwell Quality Tools.”
Anthony Woodard, Cornwell Tools Dealer, Tennessee
“After retirement from the US Coast Guard the transition to civilian life, and becoming a Cornwell dealer, was easier than I had expected. I found the same sense of professionalism, camaraderie, and family values I was used to in the service. The support from everyone, from the Cornwell Corporate office to my District Managers has been vital to my success. I look forward to the opportunity to further my career in this company for many years to come.”

Seasonal franchises in home service industries like pest control can create lucrative opportunities for entrepreneurs looking for recession-proof businesses.
no matter the condition of the economic climate, pest control services are always needed to help minimize the number of mosquitoes, ticks and other pests near homes.
With that said, pest control services are seasonal. So why would an entrepreneur decide to join a seasonal franchise?
Here to talk about how seasonal businesses can use off-season months to drive business growth and why entrepreneurs shouldn’t shy away from seasonal opportunities is Michael Moorhouse, president of Mosquito Shield, an industry-leading and innovative pest control franchise.
From a marketing perspective, how are you able to leverage your franchise platform to expand your reach in the off-season?
There are a significant number of tactics that franchise owners can deploy during the “off-season.” The main thing Mosquito Shield does differently as a largely seasonal company is that we speak in “peak” and “non-peak” terms with our owners as it relates to their business.
There are so many fruitful campaigns that happen during non-peak times that we don’t want franchisees thinking of it as an “off” season. We operate with a 12-month playbook that has tactics each month for owners to be engaging in. During nonpeak periods, this would include home/ trade shows, upsell campaigns, win-back campaigns, referral campaigns and more.
How can fall and winter home, garden and lawn care events open opportunities to generate franchisee leads for seasonal businesses?
Franchise owners can do extremely well at these events by being in the right place at the right time. These shows are typically held in late winter or early spring, long

before the mosquitoes are out biting but exactly when homeowners are in the mindset of planning for warmer days as they walk the aisles. The attendees are primarily single-family homeowners looking to reinvest in their properties with home improvements, and our services fit perfectly within that demographic.
How do national marketing campaigns make an impact on new franchisees and help them drive growth in their business?
Franchise marketing success is mostly at the very local level and built on a lot of grassroots community engagement. The national media plays a role in creating awareness for our service when reporting on the diseases and illnesses that are transmitted through mosquitoes and ticks.
What data points do you analyze to assess the potential for market expansion within new geographic areas or untapped customer segments?
With over 20 years of data, we look at very specific data points regarding demographics, geographics and psychographics as it relates to a specific market at Mosquito Shield. We know exactly who our audience is and where they are.
Our platform also has software that allows us to look at data such as single-family homes, income levels, property values, etc. and build a market share report from that. That allows our home team to know if an owner is hitting their potential, still has low hanging fruit to harvest or is ready to expand.
What should potential franchisees be aware of when considering a seasonal brand with potential lean times?
Franchisees of a seasonal business need to understand the ramp period and be properly capitalized for the first two or three seasons. Once the business starts to scale, the seasonality becomes more of a blessing than a curse. We work closely with candidates in the consideration process of buying a business to make sure they understand the challenges of operating a business with seasonal constraints.
What are some other benefits of seasonal franchises that entrepreneurs looking to join a franchise may find enticing?
The primary benefits relate to having control of your schedule and knowing when you will have downtime to work on your business versus working in your business. Additionally, it allows you to scale at a pace that fits your lifestyle and will generate annual revenue in a semiannual window over time. v

For Jack and Michelle Horner, service has always been at the core of their careers. With a combined 49 years in the United States Air Force, their transition into business ownership wasn’t about stepping away from service, it was about continuing it in a new and meaningful way.
families in finding the safest and best care options. They were attracted by how the job was centered around giving back to their community by providing a muchneeded service.
The transition from military service to entrepreneurship came with challenges, but their Air Force experience prepared the Horners well. The military taught them life skills such as operating as a unit, following directions, having integrity in everything you do, and that service before self is paramount. Those same principles guide Jack and Michelle in running their business today.
Making an Impact
Michelle, a retired Air Force Captain, and Jack, a retired Senior Master Sergeant, spent decades operating in high-pressure environments, making decisions that affected lives, and upholding values like integrity, discipline and commitment. When the time came to retire from military life, they sought a path that would allow
them to continue making a difference. That path led them to CarePatrol.
A Mission-Driven Business
In 2014, Michelle discovered CarePatrol through a franchise broker. The business aligned perfectly with the couple’s values, offering a way to assist seniors and their
Since opening their CarePatrol franchise, the Horners have helped over 2,000 families find assisted living, memory care, independent living or in-home care solutions for their loved ones. In their eyes, each family they assist represents another mission successfully accomplished.
Jack, who joined CarePatrol in 2018, brings his leadership and operational expertise to the business. Before joining Michelle in running their franchise, he spent five years

as a manufacturing production supervisor at Lockheed Martin and two years at Wolverine Advanced Materials. However, it was CarePatrol that provided him with the most fulfilling role of his post-military career.
“I take great pride in knowing that we are truly making a difference,” Jack says. “Every day, we help families navigate one of the most difficult decisions of their lives–ensuring their loved ones receive the best care possible.”
overcoming challenges and Achieving success
Launching and growing a business is never easy, and the Horners faced their fair share of challenges. The senior care industry requires deep empathy, patience and the ability to navigate complex healthcare and financial systems. Their military background in problem-solving and decision-making under pressure proved invaluable.
Through perseverance and a commitment to excellence, they have built a strong reputation in their community. Their franchise has grown steadily, allowing them to expand their reach and help more

families. “Our biggest accomplishments stem from the service we provide daily,” Michelle says. “It’s not about numbers, it’s about ensuring that seniors live in safe conditions and have access to the resources they need.”
Building a legacy
For the Horners, business ownership isn’t just about financial success, it’s about building a legacy of service. They describe their employees like family and owning a small business allows them to provide a career opportunity that is fulfilling and meaningful.
Their long-term goal is to continue expanding their business and reaching even more families as the need for senior care solutions is only growing. Jack and Michelle want to ensure that every family in their community has access to expert guidance and support when making these critical decisions.
More than a Business
As they reflect on their journey from military service to business ownership, Jack and Michelle are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving others.
“ The skills you develop in the military–teamwork, leadership and problem-solving—are invaluable in business.”
“Our military experience shaped us into who we are today,” Michelle says. “It gave us the discipline, leadership skills and resilience needed to run a successful business. Most importantly, it reinforced the value of putting service before self.”
Their advice to fellow veterans considering entrepreneurship is to find a business that aligns with your values and mission. The skills you develop in the military–teamwork, leadership and problemsolving—are invaluable in business. With dedication and passion, you can continue making a meaningful impact.
With their unwavering commitment to service, Jack and Michelle Horner have transformed their CarePatrol franchise into more than just a business. It’s a mission, a community resource and a beacon of hope for families navigating the challenges of senior care. Their journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, integrity and a heart dedicated to helping others. v

When a brand undergoes a major creative refresh, the public sees the flashy campaigns, revamped messaging, and updated customer experiences. But what the public doesn’t see is all the groundwork behind the brand refresh.
The teams that power a brand like Weed Man—our corporate team, our franchisees, and our frontline employees—are the heartbeat of our success, so before a new external campaign can enter the public view, it must be embraced enthusiastically at every level of the business internally.
the e xternal campaign
This year, as we’re entering our 55th lawn care season, Weed Man launched an exciting new external campaign: It’s Weed Man for the Win. The campaign d ylan d e g roat
includes a series of creative digital and print advertisements, as well as a cohesive content strategy for social media, customer resources, and more, highlighting the high stakes, steep competition, and storybook action of the lawn care game and emphasizing the confidence and success customers can expect from Weed Man as a coach and teammate.
We’re extremely proud of the work completed by our team and by our creative partners at Planet Propaganda to bring this new campaign to life. And it’s work that actually started a couple years ago, and it started inside the brand. Before we made any moves to revamp our public messaging, we had to make strategic changes to our internal messaging. This process, guided by our friends at Planet Propaganda, had a massive ripple effect on our internal culture and ultimately influenced the direction of our new brand refresh for the public.
the Internal campaign
Long before the “it’s Weed Man for the Win” campaign landed in social media feeds and mailboxes across north America, we embarked on a journey with our creative agency Planet Propaganda to identify our “inherent truth.” Through a months-long process of comparative research, stakeholder interviews, and diving into the data, the team at Planet Propaganda aptly identified Weed Man’s culture of rigorous exceptionalism and brought us invaluable insights into our brand personality. In short, they told us what we already knew, but didn’t have the means to express: at Weed Man, we “Yard Harder.”
Yard Harder. That’s it. That’s our inherent truth. It’s our mission statement, our rallying cry, and our reason for franchisees, employees, and customers to believe in us. With Yard Harder in our arsenal, we had
the key to unlock our company culture, our internal communications, and our external brand messaging. And that was just the beginning on our road to refreshing the brand.
Aligning Internally with our new Inherent truth
once we identified yard Harder as our inherent truth, our challenge was to make sure it permeated every level of our internal culture. I’m not someone who gets nervous easily, but as we prepared to unveil Yard Harder to the network at the closing session of the 2023 Weed Man Conference, I have to admit I was sweating a little. But all my anxiety melted away when the presentation was done and I saw the crowd of franchisees and employees—my Weed Man family—giving a standing ovation. The rallying cry had officially rallied the team for the first (but not the last) time. From there, we were very intentional about how we brought Yard Harder to life. Enthusiasm works from the top down, so with franchisees Yarding Harder, our frontline employees are Yarding Harder too. We communicated the new truth relentlessly, at network-wide and regional meetings, and it’s a powerful thing to see a Zoom Room full of Yard Harder backgrounds. We launched a line of fun Yard Harder swag, like pennants, hats, and welcome kits, which franchisees

can purchase for their teams. We’ve incorporated it into our employee training and welcome videos. At the 2024 Weed Man Conference, we gave everyone a yard Harder jersey, and it was amazing to see a sea of Weed Man people all united in this shared identity. now, so many of our franchisees’ and employees’ Linked i n posts are enthusiastically tagged #YardHarder. I’ve even seen an employee with a “Yard Hard” manicure!
Why It Works
First came Yard Harder, then came “It’s Weed Man for the Win,” a natural extension of the Yard Harder spirit, this time aimed at our amazing customers. (Again, I must give props to the team at Planet Propaganda for getting to the heart of Weed Man and helping us shine.) When your external creative campaigns are rooted in strong alignment with your internal culture, some incredible things happen:
1. Brand Cohesion: With strong cohesion between the brand internally and externally, it becomes easier to create creative, effective external campaigns that represent the brand and get results. It gives customers a reason to believe in us, because what we’re advertising is true, through-and-through.
2. Mission Alignment: Our people are the bridge between the brand and our
customers. With our inherent truth guiding the way, and with employees who are aligned with the refreshed vision, they become our most effective ambassadors. They deliver the brand experience through their interactions with customers, their adherence to company values, and their daily commitment to excellence. A cohesive internal campaign ensures everyone understands the “why” behind the rebrand and how they contribute to its success.
3. Growth: Internal alignment is not just a nice-to-have; it’s essential for growth. Employees who feel connected to a company’s mission are more engaged, more productive, and more likely to stay long-term. This alignment not only enhances day-to-day operations but also supports strategic growth by creating a scalable culture that can withstand expansion into new markets. And it positions us with a workforce that is ready to tackle new challenges in our ever-changing landscapes of marketing and technology.
I can attest that a rebrand or a brand refresh is about much more than changing how the world sees your company; it’s about redefining how your people see themselves within it. At Weed Man, our people know we Yard Harder, so our customers know It’s Weed Man for the Win. v

After 24 years of dedicated service in the U.S. Navy, including time on submarines USS Dallas and USS Albuquerque, I transitioned from military leadership to business ownership. My journey is one of resilience, adaptation, and is rooted in commitment to service both in uniform and as a franchise owner of Next Day Access in North Houston and Katy, Texas.
upon graduating from the u.S. naval Academy in Annapolis, i served eight years on active duty and then another 12 years in the navy reserve. i n 2014, i retired from the navy while working in Houston’s oil and gas industry where I held various leadership positions. I built a strong corporate career until the unforeseen impact of COVID-19 led to losing my job in 2020.
During that time of uncertainty, I decided to take a leap of faith into business ownership. Despite the navy’s reputation for risktaking, submariners are known for their calculated, methodical decision-making. We’re the ones who think twice before pressing big red buttons, after all. This strategic mindset served me well in choosing my next career move.

translating Military e xperience into Business success
I attribute my military background as the cornerstone of my entrepreneurial success. The ability to adapt to challenges, maintain discipline and lead diverse teams played a crucial role in establishing my business. i n the navy, mission accomplishment required versatility and teamwork and those traits seamlessly translated into running a franchise.
As a business owner, my daily duties range from installations and service work to marketing, sales and financial analysis. Military leadership taught me to work with people from all backgrounds, which now helps in hiring and training employees based on our company’s core values.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is engaging with customers and referral networks. My military background provides an instant bond with many clients, often leading to shared stories and deeper connections.
Why next Day Access
My decision to join next Day Access was deeply personal. My wife, kelly, a physical therapist, previously owned a home health business. In early 2020, tragedy struck our family when kelly’s sister suffered a life-altering car accident, leaving her a quadriplegic. While kelly understood the medical challenges

ahead, we were unprepared for the complexities of home modifications needed to support a person with considerable challenges.
Our personal experience with accessibility modifications proved frustrating and costly. When I lost my corporate job, we decided to explore franchise opportunities. A recruiter presented us with hundreds of options, but we quickly gravitated toward senior services. Houston, with its large population of aging residents, veterans and renowned medical centers specializing in rehabilitation, was an ideal market. After thorough research, we found next Day Access to be a perfect fit for our family in both mission and impact. The business aligned with our values and allowed us to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
growth and Achievements
Despite starting the business during the unstable times of 2021, I set a clear goal not just to grow, but to be excellent in every service we provided. By focusing on quality and customer satisfaction, next Day Access of north Houston quickly gained a reputation for reliability and excellence.
Our hard work paid off. In 2022, I was named next Day Access Franchise Rookie of the Year, an achievement driven by remarkable business growth and an outstanding reputation for service.
Additionally, we have built strong relationships with charitable organizations, churches, school districts and the VA, ensuring that safe accessibility solutions reach those who need them most.
A Family legacy
For kelly and me, next Day Access is more than just a business—it’s a longterm commitment and potential family legacy. Our sons, Ross (22) and Dirk (18), are already deeply involved. Ross works full-time as a lead technician, and Dirk, currently earning a dual-credit Associate’s Degree in Business Management, plans to

enlist in the navy before returning to run the business alongside his brother.
A recent event reinforced just how much of an impact our work can have. During the holiday season, Ross encountered a client experiencing a severe COPD-related breathing episode. Rather than panic, he immediately called 911 a decision that, according to EMS, saved the client’s life. Moments like these affirm that our business is more than just providing accessibility solutions; it’s about truly making a difference.
reflecting on my journey from submariner to entrepreneur, I remember the immense value of my military experience. The discipline, adaptability, and leadership cultivated in the navy have been instrumental in building a thriving business. next Day Access of north Houston is not just a company to me. It’s a mission. One that my family and I are honored to fulfill. With a strong foundation and a passion for service, our family is set to make a lasting impact in our community. v

United States Air Force, Major (Ret.) Lonnie Wilson dedicated 25 years to the military and is just beginning a new phase in his career— bringing health and wellness to the community through business ownership.
In February 2025, Wilson, alongside his wife Dianna, opened a MassageLuXe franchise in McDonough, Georgia, fulfilling a long-held goal of entrepreneurship and community impact.
Wilson’s transition from the military to
small business ownership was driven by a desire to continue leading and making a difference. Though he currently serves as a Captain at American Airlines with plans to retire just around the corner, he was already preparing for his next chapter. “I proudly served my country, and as I approach retirement from American Airlines, I wanted to create a business that aligns with my values and interests. MassageLuXe was the perfect fit for my family because we believe in the power of health and wellness.”
A Path to entrepreneurship
The Wilson’s passion for business ownership runs deep. Dianna’s father was a business owner, which inspired her to pursue her own career as a Realtor and Broker. That same entrepreneurial spirit influenced the couple’s decision to invest in a franchise. “Business ownership has always been in our family, and we wanted to continue that legacy. We were looking for an opportunity that allowed us to contribute to our community, and MassageLuXe checked all the boxes,” said Lonnie.
Their journey into franchising began with extensive research. “We were searching for a business that aligned with our vision of promoting health and wellness. That search led us to MassageLuXe, and the rest is history.” Though the military did not provide him with specific transition
programs related to franchising, Wilson’s discipline and leadership skills gained during his service made the process more seamless.
Applying Military skills to Business
Wilson credits his military background for much of his success in business ownership. “In the military, teamwork, leadership, and hard work are essential. Those same skills are critical in business,” he explains. The ability to strategize, manage teams, and problem-solve under pressure has given Wilson a strong foundation to navigate the challenges of running a business.
While business ownership was always part of Wilson’s long-term plan, his previous experience as a restaurant owner and Allstate Insurance Agency operator reinforced the importance of perseverance and adaptability. “Being a business owner can be very challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Each experience has taught me something valuable.”
challenges and Accomplishments
Opening a new business comes with its fair share of obstacles. For Wilson, one of the biggest challenges was ensuring the new MassageLuXe location was set up for success from day one. “Every business has hurdles—whether it’s staffing, marketing, or operations—but overcoming those

challenges makes success even more fulfilling.”
Despite the challenges, Wilson takes great pride in what he has accomplished so far. “Seeing our vision come to life and having a positive impact on our community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey.”
A vision for the Future
For Lonnie and Dianna, business ownership is more than just financial success—it’s about creating a lasting impact. “Our goal is to grow our MassageLuXe franchise into a thriving business that serves our community while providing a sense of fulfillment for our family. We want to ensure that our business is not just profitable but also contributes to the overall well-being of the people we serve.”
The journey has been demanding, but Lonnie wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Small business ownership has given me a great sense of accomplishment, even though it keeps me very busy. I look forward to what’s ahead and hope to continue growing our business to its full potential.”
With a commitment to service, leadership, and community engagement, Lonnie and Dianna Wilson’s MassageLuXe in McDonough is set to become a staple in the area— offering relaxation, rejuvenation, and a continuation of his lifelong mission to serve others.
“MassageLuXe McDonough is more than a business to us—it’s a way to support the well-being of our neighbors,” said Dianna Wilson in an announcement about their grand opening. “We are
excited to offer a space where people can relax, recharge, and focus on their selfcare. We look forward to welcoming the Henry County community and providing high-quality services that promote health and wellness.”
grand opening celebration
To mark this exciting new chapter, MassageLuXe McDonough held a grand opening celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and special promotions for the local community. The event brought together friends, family, and local leaders to officially welcome MassageLuXe to McDonough. The celebration highlighted the Wilsons’ dedication to fostering strong community connections while promoting health and wellness through their business. v

from Service to franc H i S e Succe SS: h ow v eterans c an t hrive as Business owners
By Garland Moore, Multi-Unit Owner of SpeeDee Oil
Change & Auto Service® in Greenville, NC, and southwestern Virginia. A former Army National Guard officer and Transition Specialist for Hire Heroes USA, Moore leverages his military experience to successfully run his franchises.

It’s no secret that transitioning from military service to running your own business can be tough, but as a veteran, you’re already equipped with the skills and mindset necessary for success in franchising. Your leadership experience, ability to problem-solve under pressure, and expertise in following proven systems gives you a solid foundation for business ownership.
Franchising is a great fit for veterans, and the best part is you’ve got everything you need to make it work – just take what
you’ve learned and apply it. Here’s five strategies to help you turn your military experience into long-term success as a business owner.
Do Your Research
When it comes to investing in a franchise, it’s important to do your homework. You can’t just pick something that looks good on paper. Take the time to really check out your options, because not all franchises are the same.
Start by exploring industries that match your interests and strengths. Whether it’s food, fitness, or automotive, make sure the franchise has a solid reputation and a good track record of supporting veterans. Many franchises, like SpeeDee, offer special perks for veterans, like discounted fees or financing options, which can make the initial investment easier to handle.
While you’re researching, be sure to talk to current franchisees. They can give you real
garland Moore, Multi-unit owner of speedee oil change & auto service®

insight into what it’s like to be a part of that brand. Check if the franchise provides strong support, a clear operational model, and the training you need to succeed. Doing your homework now will help you avoid unnecessary risks and set you up to thrive.
use Your leadership skills
In the military, leadership is key. You probably had the chance to lead teams, manage resources, and complete tasks under pressure –all skills that are incredibly valuable in franchising.
Franchising needs strong leadership to motivate your team, create a good work culture, and keep everyone aligned with your goals. Whether you’re managing a small crew or several locations, the leadership skills you gained in the military will help you guide and inspire your employees. You want your team to feel responsible and invested in the mission. When they see the bigger picture and know you’ve got their back, they’ll be more willing to put in the effort to help you succeed. The stronger your team, the stronger your business.
stay Resilient and Adaptable
As you know, things don’t always go as planned in the military and in business. How you handle those challenges is what really counts.
When you’re running a franchise, you’ll face obstacles, whether it’s operational issues, customer complaints, or unexpected changes in the economy. But just like in the military, it’s all about staying adaptable and keeping a problem-solving mindset. Take a step back, assess the situation, and come up with solutions. You’ve already shown resilience during your service, and franchising will call for that same attitude.
As a franchisee, you’ll also need to adjust your strategies when something isn’t working. If a marketing campaign isn’t hitting the mark or your team is facing challenges, it’s important to tweak things and try a different approach. See the challenges as opportunities to learn, grow, and improve.
embrace the Franchise Model
One of the best parts of franchising is the built-in support system. As a veteran, you already know how important structure, systems, and support is, and the franchise model has a lot to offer that other
businesses just can’t match. A good franchise gives you everything you need – from a proven business plan to training, marketing resources, and ongoing support.
Franchisors, especially those that are veteran-friendly, are there to help you succeed in your new career. Many franchises offer discounts on fees, rebates on royalties, and other perks that make getting started more affordable. Plus, they’ll give you solid training and resources to make sure you’ve got everything you need to run things smoothly.
Make the most of everything your franchisor offers, whether it’s marketing, training, or ongoing support. The stronger your relationship with your franchisor, the more successful your business will be in the long run.
set clear goals
Every mission in the military starts with clear objectives – and the same goes for franchising. To succeed as a franchisee, you need a solid plan with clear goals and strategies to reach them.

Creating a business plan is one of the most important things you can do when starting your journey as an entrepreneur. Your plan should cover both short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals might include getting your operations up and running, building a customer base, and hitting revenue targets. Long-term goals could be things like opening more locations or establishing a strong presence in your community.
Having clear, measurable goals is key to keeping your business on track. You’ve been trained to follow orders and get things done in the military, and that same discipline will help you succeed in the business world. As you work toward your goals, make sure to check your progress and tweak your strategies if needed. Stay focused on your objectives, and it’ll keep you motivated to push forward.
Veterans have all the skills and experience needed to be great franchisees. By doing your research, using your leadership skills, staying resilient, embracing the franchise model, and setting clear goals, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful career in franchising. v

After serving more than 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, First Sergeant (Ret.) Joseph Benton has embarked on a new mission— serving up smiles and breakfast favorites as the proud owner of the new Eggs Up Grill in Jacksonville, North Carolina along with his wife, Tomeka Benton, and business partners Estrella Rogers, Sammie Rogers, and Shanta Cooks. The new location officially opened the doors on September 3, 2025.
A native of Cross Plains, Tennessee, Benton grew up in a small town with just one four-way stop. After graduation he sought a path that would challenge him and provide purpose. At 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, looking for a career he couldn’t simply walk away from. Over the next two decades, he dedicated his life to the military, where he worked his way through the ranks and took on multiple leadership roles. His extensive experience leading Marines and executing complex logistical operations prepared him well for
his next chapter in business ownership. Benton had always possessed an entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to pursue a degree in business administration while still serving. “I knew I was in the right field because every business class held my attention, and I worked hard to earn top grades,” he recalled. His passion for leadership, logistics, and problemsolving translated seamlessly into small business ownership. “The military prepares you for just about anything. Leading Marines from different backgrounds taught me how to manage diverse teams, and handling logistics in the field prepared me for the operational challenges of running a restaurant.”
The idea of opening an eggs up Grill was mutual. The ladies were out of town and discovered the restaurant while attending a women’s retreat and discussed the idea of having a location in Jacksonville. Tomeka called Joseph excited about the delicious food and suggested it could be a good opportunity for their next venture. After careful research and planning, the Benton’s teamed up with their friends and business partners to bring the popular breakfast and lunch concept to Jacksonville.
The journey to opening day was not
without its challenges. “Everything has been a challenge—construction being the biggest,” Benton admitted. “Before this, I had never read a blueprint, so getting through the construction phase was a huge accomplishment.” Despite the obstacles, he found the experience both challenging and rewarding, as each hurdle brought the team closer to realizing their dream.
now that the doors are open, Benton looks forward to making an impact in the community, not just by serving delicious food but by creating opportunities for others. “Small business ownership has given me a sense of purpose beyond the military. It’s allowed me to prove to myself that we can succeed in a new arena,” he shared. His goals are clear: “keep God first, keep my family second, and grow our business to its full potential.”
With the support of his family, friends, and the Jacksonville community, the team’s eggs up Grill is set to become a neighborhood staple—a place where great food and great service bring people together. For Benton, this is just the beginning of another fulfilling mission, one plate at a time.

high school math teacher Toru Kumon developed the Kumon Method of learning more than 60 years ago in Japan, when his son was struggling with second-grade arithmetic.

Each location boasts 20+ meticulously crafted flavors of sweetened and unsweetened tea, made using a proprietary water filtration system and 100% natural ingredients.
hitting a significant milestone of 100 locations in early 2024, h Teao is on the path of continued growth. h Teao believes in fostering an atmosphere where all are welcoming and takes pride in its commitment to giving back to its local communities.
