SYNOPSIS
PROLOGUE High in the air, an epic battle is raging between a garuda and a naga. Leaping and soaring, the lords of sea and air fly high above the Himavant. Coiling himself around a tree, the naga uproots it and smashes the dwelling of a holy man. The garuda devours the naga and descends to earth to make amends to the holy man, giving him a magical fan that has power over nagas.
Ambalayana plays his pipe and the prince dances. The people are astonished and shower the Brahmin with gifts and money. He is buoyed by their praises and decides that he will next go to the center of the world - the great city of Benares.
ACT TWO
IN HEAVEN
IN THE PALACE OF THE NAGAS
The King and Queen of Heaven, watching the earth, see signs of distress. An unscrupulous Brahmin has managed to get hold of the magic fan. If nothing is done, he will wreak havoc. It is not only the humans, but the sea dwelling nagas who cry out for the enlightenment of a Buddha. It is time for the Boddhisatva to descend to earth again. They decide to enter the dreams of the Queen of the Nagas, the human woman Samuddaja.
Samuddaja has a terrifying nightmare. Bhuridatta’s wives and human mother Samuddaja organize a search. Three brothers volunteer to search in three worlds. Sudassana, the eldest, searches the world of men. His sister Ajimukhi transforms herself into a frog and accompanies him, hidden in his hair.
ACT ONE
The King of Benares has come to watch Alambayana’s great performance. Bhuridatta dances. When Sudassana comes, Bhuridatta recognized him and dances all the way up to him. The crowd is amazed at Sudassana’s power.
IN THE NAGA KINGDOM Samuddaja has a dream in which the young Boddhisatva enters her womb. An egg hatches and a little Boddhisatva emerges. Nagas carry him to the splendid court of the dragons. The young Boddhisatva grows into a splendid man-serpent who yearns to find the answer to the problem of suffering. The naga princes lead him to a secret place where he may meditate on the universe’s hidden truths. He vows that nothing will shake him from his meditation. BY THE BORDER BETWEEN THE HUMAN AND NAGA WORLDS Prince Bhuridatta meditates, watched by a host of nagas, humans, and angels. But time passes and he is left alone. Onto the scene wanders Ambalayana, a wicked Brahmin, and an unscrupulous hunter who has offered to reveal the location of the naga prince in exchange for a valuable jewel. Ambalayana sees the prince and throws the hunter the jewel; but he cannot catch it, for it rolls down a fissure and back to the kingdom of the nagas whence it came. Ambalayana uses the spell to capture Bhuridatta, smashing his bones so he can squeeze him into a basket. At length the

deed is done and the Boddhisatva is his captive. IN A SMALL VILLAGE SQUARE
IN THE CITY SQUARE OF BENARES
Alambayana boasts that no wizard is mightier than he. He challenges Sudassana to a duel of magic. Ajimukhi spits tree drops of poison into Sudassana’s hand and he casts three holes in the earth, each filled with wondrous things. He pours the poison into the three holes and magical fire emerges, consuming all and final transforming Alambayana into a leprous monster. In terror, Alambayana reverses the mantra that kept Bhuridatta in thrall. Bhuridatta assumes the Bodhisatva radiance and explains that they are the children of Samuddaja, sister of the King of Benares. He explains why he endured so much suffering at the hands of the evil Brahmin. He is reunited with his family, and humans and nagas rejoice at the Avatar’s triumph.

SOMTOW SUCHARITKUL สมเถา สุจริตกุล • คีตกวีและผู้กำ�กับการแสดง Once referred to by the International Herald Tribune as “the most well-known expatriate Thai in the world,” Somtow Sucharitkul is no longer an expatriate, since he has returned to Thailand after five decades of wandering the world. He is best known as an award-winning novelist and a composer of operas. Born in Bangkok, Somtow grew up in Europe and was educated at Eton and Cambridge. His first career was in music and in the 1970s he acquired a reputation as a revolutionary composer, the first to combine Thai and Western instruments in radical new sonorities. Conditions in the arts in the region at the time proved so traumatic for the young composer that he suffered a major burnout, emigrated to the United States, and reinvented himself as a novelist. His earliest novels were in the science fiction field but he soon began to cross into other genres. In his 1984 novel Vampire Junction, he injected a new literary inventiveness into the horror genre, in the words of Robert Bloch, author of Psycho, “skillfully combining the styles of Stephen King, William Burroughs, and the author of the Revelation to John.” Vampire Junction was voted one of the forty all-time greatest horror books by the Horror Writers’ Association, joining established classics like Frankenstein and Dracula. In the 1990s Somtow became increasingly identified as a uniquely Asian writer with novels such as the semi-autobiographical Jasmine Nights. He won the World Fantasy Award, the highest accolade given in the world of fantastic literature, for his novella The Bird Catcher. His fifty-three books have sold about two million copies world-wide. After becoming a Buddhist monk for a period in 2001, Somtow decided to refocus his attention on the country of his birth, founding Bangkok’s first international opera company

and returning to music, where he again reinvented himself, this time as a neo-Asian neo-Romantic composer. The Norwegian government commissioned his song cycle Songs before Dawn for the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, and he composed at the request of the government of Thailand his Requiem: In Memoriam 9/11 which was dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. According to London’s Opera magazine, “in just five years, Somtow has made Bangkok into the operatic hub of Southeast Asia.” His operas on Thai themes, Madana, Mae Naak, and Ayodhya, have been well received by international critics. His most recent opera, The Silent Prince, was premiered in 2010 in Houston, and a fifth opera, Dan no Ura, will premiere in Thailand in the 2013/14 season. His sixth opera, Midsummer, will premiere in the UK in 2014. He is increasingly in demand as a conductor specializing in opera and in the late-romantic composers like Mahler. His repertoire runs the entire gamut from Monteverdi to Wagner. His work has been especially lauded for its stylistic authenticity and its lyricism. The orchestra he founded in Bangkok, the Siam Philharmonic, is mounting the first complete Mahler cycle in the region. He is the first recipient of Thailand’s “Distinguished Silpathorn” award, given for an artist who has made and continues to make a major impact on the region’s culture, from Thailand’s Ministry of Culture.

สมเถา เกิดในกรุงเทพฯ เติบโตในยุโรป เป็น คนไทยคนแรกที่สำ�เร็จมัธยมศึกษา จากวิทยาลัย อีตัน ต่อมาได้รับทุนการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัย เคมบริดจ์ ประเทศอังกฤษ จนสำ�เร็จการศึกษา ระดับปริญญาตรี (เกียรตินิยม) และปริญญาโท แขนงวิชาวรรณคดีควบคู่กับดนตรี งานอาชี พ แรกของสมเถาคื อ สร้ า งสรรค์
ดนตรี คีตนิพนธ์ ทัศน์ภูเขาทอง View from the Golden Mountain ซึ่งสมเถาประพันธ์เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2518 เป็นการบุกเบิกครั้งสำ�คัญของวงการ ดนตรีโดยใช้เครื่องดนตรีไทยผสมเครื่องดนตรี ตะวันตกเป็นครั้งแรกในประวัติศาสตร์การดนตรี สมเถา ทำ�หน้าที่วาทยกรครั้งแรกเมื่ออายุ เพียง 19 ปี โดยอำ�นวยเพลงให้วงดุริยางค์ ฮอลแลนด์ ซิ ม โฟนี อ อร์ เ คสตร้ า ที่ ป ระเทศ เนเธอร์แลนด์ ในคีตนิพนธ์ Holland Symphony ซึ่งเขาประพันธ์ทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายสมเด็จ พระบรมราชินีนาถจูเลียนา แห่งเนเธอร์แลนด์ เนื่องในวโรกาสครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 25 ปี ในช่วงคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1970 สมเถา ได้ชื่อ ว่าเป็น ‘คีตกวีล้ำ�ยุค’ แห่งภาคพื้นเอเซีย เขา ถู ก วิ พ ากษ์ วิ จ ารณ์ อ ย่ า งหนั ก จากเพื่ อ นร่ ว ม ชาติ แต่ในช่วงเวลาเดียวกันก็ได้รับแต่งตั้งเป็น ผู้อำ�นวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ (Artistic Director) ใน งานมหกรรมดนตรีแห่งเอเซีย (Asian Composers Expo 78) เขาก่อตั้งสมาคมคีตกวีแห่ง ประเทศไทย และได้รับแต่งตั้งเป็นผู้แทนถาวร จากประเทศไทยในคณะกรรมาธิ ก ารดนตรี นานาชาติแห่งยูเนสโก เมื่ อ ความคิ ด สร้ า งสรรค์ ด้ า นดนตรี ห ยุ ด ชะงักชั่วคราว สมเถาจึงหันไปสู่บรรณพิภพ เมื่อ ต้น พ.ศ. 2523 นับแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา เขาผลิต นวนิยายภาษาอังกฤษแนวต่าง ๆ 50 เรื่องรวม ทั้งเรื่องสั้นกว่า 200 เรื่อง ออกสู่ตลาดโลกภาย ใต้นามปากกา เอส.พี. สมเถา (S. หลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ สมเถา สุจริตกุล เป็นศิลปินคนแรกที่ได้รับ รางวัลศิลปาธรกิตติคุณเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2551 เป็น ผู้ก่อตั้งวงดุริยางค์สยามฟิลฮาร์โมนิค และวง ดุริยางค์ สยามซินโฟนิเอตต้า ซึ่งได้รับรางวัล ชนะเลิ ศ ในการแข่ ง ขั น ระดั บ โลกในเทศกาล Summa Cum Laude 2555 ณ กรุงเวียนนา ประเทศ ออสเตรีย เขาผลิตผลงานอย่างต่อ เนื่องทั้งในด้านวรรณกรรมและคีตศิลป์ รวมทั้ง ดนตรีละครเพลง “เรยา เดอะมิวสิคัล” ในรูป แบบบรอดเวย์มาตรฐาน และบัลเลต๋-โอเปร่า “สุริโยทัย” ซึ่งได้รับความสำ�เร็จอย่างมาก มีผู้ สนใจเข้าชมอย่างล้นหลามทุกรอบการแสดง ปัจจุบัน สมเถาดำ�รงตำ�แหน่งประธานมูลนิธิ มหาอุปรากรกรุงเทพ และผู้อำ�นวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ ประจำ�คณะมหาอุปรากรโอเปร่าสยามอินเตอร์ เนชั่นแนล 9

TRISDEE NA PATALUNG ทฤษฏี ณ พัทลุง • วาทยกร Thai conductor Trisdee na Patalung has worked extensively at the Netherlands Opera Studio as conductor and resident coach. He was music director of a staged performance of Händel’s oratorio Belshazzar directed by Harry Kupfer, Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers at the Concertgebouw and Monteverdi’s Orfeo directed by Pierre Audi at the Amsterdam Schouwburg. He conducted the Rossini Opera Festival’s 2009 production of Il viaggio a Reims in Pesaro, Italy, and the Dutch National Touring Opera’s (Nationale Reisopera) 2010 production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola. “Discovered” by Somtow Sucharitkul at the age of 15 and engaged as resident repetiteur and assistant conductor of Opera Siam at 16, Trisdee had his operatic conducting debut in Opera Siam’s Die Zauberflöte at 20, immediately followed by Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice at the Steyr Music Festival in Austria. Since then he has conducted such orchestras as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano e Trento, Orchestra Sinfonica G. Rossini, and Het Gelders Orkest. He is currently the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra’s resident conductor. Of Trisdee’s conducting of Die Zauberflöte, UK’s OPERA magazine said, “If the word ‘genius’ still has any meaning in this age of rampant hyperbole, Trisdee is truly a living example.”

Potprecha (Jak) sang in Nicholson Choir at Cheam School, Winchester College Chapel Choir, and Bristol Cathedral Choir as a choral scholar. He attended Eton College Choral Course, masterclasses by Michael Chance, and took lessons with Charles Brett, Patrick Van Goethem and Jim Tae-chin. Based in Bangkok, Thailand, Potprecha has performed as a soloist for Siam/ Bangkok Opera, Siam Philharmonic, and Siam Sinfonietta on many occasions, notably, in Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, as Myrtale in Massenet’s Thaïs, as Shepherd Boy in Puccini’s Tosca, in Rossini’s Petite Messe Sollenelle, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, as dritte Dame in Mozart’s Zauberflöte; and as Endimione in Cavalli’s La Calisto (Young Soloist Programme production). Achan Somtow Sucharitkul cast him in three of his operas: as Bodhisattva Temiya in the Silent Prince, Lord Atsumori in Dan No Ura, and European Singer in Suriyothai (Ballet-Opera). With Grand Opera (Thailand), he sang in concerts and events organized by British, Swiss, Austrian and Spanish embassies in Bangkok, for example, Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebration in Bangkok, Austrian National Day Celebrations in Bangkok, Spanish Songs and Zarzuela Concert, Swiss Art Songs Concert, and Mozart, Schubert and Strauss Concert; and in concerts to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s and HRH Princess Sirindhorn’s birthdays at the Royal Cliff Hotel, Pattaya. He also sang in Handel’s Messiah with Bangkok International Community Orchestra and in fund raising events for many charitable foundations including English-Speaking Union, NightLight International, Kritanusorn Foundation and Foundation for the Blind. He is currently taught by Stefan Sanchez and Deborah York.
Dag, he has been specialized in Italian Opera, mainly Verdi, Puccini, and Donizetti. But Mozart has a big place in his heart for amount of more than 700 performances. Dag is mostly performing in Italy and Sweden.
Rit Parnichkun is a 9 years old Thai-Japanese boy. At first, he went along with his elder siblings for Opera Siam children choir’s audition and got the first chance of performing in the opera, Mae Naak. He played the role of Daeng (Mae Naak’s son) at Bloomsburry theatre in London (2011). He then performed twice as Little Prince Temiya in The Silent Prince both held at Thailand Cultural Center. He joined as a chorus member in Otello, Suriyothai Ballet-Opera, and The Flying Dutchman of Opera Siam. In 2014, Rit joined the children’s choir of La Boheme performed by Italian Lirico Opera, a part of Bangkok festival of music and dance. Rit’s biggest role is by singing and performing little emperor Antoku in Opera Siam’s world premier opera, Dan no Ura in August 2014. His latest performance is by singing the first boy in the three spirits of Opera Siam’s Magic Flute performed during Christmas last year. Rit is having voice lessons with Stefan Sanchez. He is currently studying in grade 4 at AIT International School, Pathumthani.

Italian/Thai coloratura soprano Monique Klongtruadroke is a top graduate in Opera Singing from the Conservatoire “Benedetto Marcello” in Venezia, Italy. She studied with soprano Rina Malatrasi, tenor Alain Charles Billard and mezzosoprano Jenny Miller. Her extensive performing career has taken her to Italy, USA, Australia, UK, Myanmar and Thailand. Here she also performed as a soloist in the presence of HRH the Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and of General Prem Tinsulanonda. With the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra she was soloist in various Royal Command Performances, such as “A Requiem in Memory of H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana” con-
ducted by Hikotaro Yazaki. Monique’s collaboration with Somtow includes the role of La Charmeuse in Massenet’s Thais and the recording of “Pie Jesu” from his “Requiem for the Mother of Songs” featured in the album “PRAKOMPLENG PRALENGTAWAI”. She sang the role of Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute by Barefoot Opera/ Longborough Opera Festival, performing in London and other cities in UK. Her other operatic roles include Gasparina in Haydn’s La Canterina (Venezia, Italy), Serafina in Donizetti’s Il Campanello, Lucy in Brecht/Weill’s The Three Penny Opera, Susanna in Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas all by NUNi Productions (Bangkok). Her Australian debut was in “Ten Days on the Island” Festival (Tasmania), in the World Premiere of Thanapoom Sirichang’s The Lunchbox by IHOS Opera. She created the role of The Mother acclaiming enthusiastic reviews from both critics and audience. Also in demand as a concert and Oratorio soloist, Monique sang in Bach’s Magnificat BWV 243 and Vivaldi’s Magnificat RV 611 both conducted by Paolo Faldi, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Handel’s Samson, Rutter’s Requiem. She performed at various Gala concerts organized by the Apostolic Nunciature, Italian Chamber of Commerce, and Embassies of : Italy, France, Israel. She also has charitable events at heart, aiding with her performances various organizations including “Cancer Research UK”, “Gift of Life Foundation”, “Operation Blessings Thailand” and “Camillian Home”. Together with her two sisters, Debbie K and Karen Klongtruadroke, and with Thailand’s Steinway Artist Nat Yontararak, she launched the charity concert series called “LOVE”, featuring the fusion of classical, jazz and pop music. Monique also has extensive teaching experience. In Thailand she has been lecturer of Classical Voice and Vocal Diction at Silpakorn University and Assumption University, and she taught Voice at Shrewsbury International School. Sudassana, Dragon Prince
Kyu Won Han has made numerous appearances with San Francisco Opera since his debut as Masetto in Don Giovanni in 1999, and has returned as Ping in Turandot, as Moralès in Carmen and as Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfly. HAN also appeared in their Verdi Celebration Recital titled “Verdi and the Art of Italian Song.” HAN made his European debut in 2001 as Ping in Turandot at Strasbourg’s Opéra National du Rhin and Japanese debut as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at the New National Theater of Tokyo. In 2003 he sang Dunois in concert version of Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orleans at Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. An alumnus of the San Francisco Opera Adler Fellowship Program, HAN was featured in the title role of Don Giovanni at the Merola Opera Program in 1999 and made the 31-city-tour with Western Opera Theater with the role. Additional credits with San Francisco Opera Center include Mr. Gedge in Showcase Presentation of Albert Herring in 2000,
and Mercurio in Showcase Production of Cavalli’s La Calisto and a prestigious Schwabacher Debut Recital in 2001. As a celebrated recitalist and concert artist, HAN’s repertoire includes Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Brahms’ Requiem, the Faure Requiem Handel’s Messiah, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Schubert’s Mass in G, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël. A native of Seoul, Korea, HAN received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Music from Manhattan School of Music. His numerous awards include the Belvedere Competition, the Mario Lanza Competition, the Oratorio Society Competition, the Licia Albanese/ Puccini Competition, the Dicapo Opera Competition and the Connecticut Opera Guild Competition. The recent appearances include the role of Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Dandini in La Cenerentola at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, and as Maak in Mae Naak by renowned Thai composer Somtow Sucharitkul at the Bangkok Opera. HAN gave memorable performances at Hiroshima and Nagasaki Peace Concerts in commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of atomic bombings and this historic musical event reached millions worldwide via satellite broadcast by NHK, Japan Broadcasting Corporation. In the fall of 2008 he has released a debut CD called “Questo Amor” by Avex Classics in Japan. Most recently he sang the role of Conte Robinson in Il Matrimonio Segreto and the role of Belcore in L’elisir d’amore. ChaipornPhuangmalee, tenor, has excelled in music from an early age. Beginning as a pianist, he was an active performer in his youth, and received an
award for his performance of songs by His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej. Mr. Phuangmalee began singing in the pop style before training classically with Pitchaya Kemasingki and entering the Pre-College program at Mahidol University’s College of Music. He continues his studies on scholarship at Mahidol University as an undergraduate in Voice Performance where he studied with Colleen Jennings and Joseph Rinaldi. He is currently a student of Nicholas Provenzale. He has participated in master classes with Franz Lukasovsky, IsvanBonyhadi and Mario Antonio Diaz.
Performances with the College of Music include roles in Opera and Music Theatre productions such as West Side Story, Die Fledermaus, South Pacific, and The Land of Smiles. Other notable performances include singing chorus for Fillipa Giordano, and singing at the International Dance Festival Thailand at the Thailand Cultural Centre. In 2012 and 2013, Mr. Phuangmalee was a member of the chorus for the opening concert and opera of La Fêtte, sponsored by the French Embassy in Thailand. He was recently awarded the Bronze Prize in the Junior Division of the 5th Bangkok Opera Singing Competition in 2013. Recently, he was one of the soloists performed in the soft opening and the grand opening of Prince Mahidol hall with Thailand philharmonic orchestra (TPO). He is a member of Grand Opera Thailand with Stefan Sanchez, he performs regularly in Bangkok and throughout the nation.

Areeya Rotjanadit (Lookpla) has started her singing lessons when she was in the 7th grade and continued to pursue her dream of being a professional singer at the college of dramatic Arts. During the six years of voice training, she competed in many singing contests, including the “Thailand’s got talent Season 1” and the “23rd KPN Award” where she was among the finalists. Areeya is now 19 years old and has already made herself known in the world of classical music and opera. She is a member of Siam Sinfonietta and had a role in a number of operas and recently, she has joined to Siam Sinfonietta V-tour in Europe and Abu Dhabi with “Měsičku” (Dvořak) song and Bhumibol Adulyadej song “Sai-fon” conducted by Somtow Sucharitkul and Trisdee na Patalung. Karrell Gallenero is a mezzo-soprano from the Philippines, although she spent most of her life in Bangkok. She started singing in the church at a young age but it wasn’t until high school where she started to study vocal music seriously. She received her vocal performance degree in sacred music form Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. While in Chicago, she was a part of the Women’s Concert Choir, was a soloist for the Moody Oratorio Chorus and other various concert performances. After returning to Bangkok, she joined singing groups like the Bangkok Music Society choir and Opera Siam. Recent performances include singing in the chorus in Die Fliegende Hollander and Dan No Ura, in La Calisto as Natura, and as the Countess from Le Nozze di Figaro in Adventures in Opera (selected scenes). Karrell is currently in the process of completing her master’s degree in performance and pedagogy from Mahidol University.

He started his pop vocal training at the age of 9 with Wasan Kedkeaw at Yamaha school of music. Later on, he continued his classical vocal training with Salith Dechsangworn at College of Music Mahidol University (campus for general public). In 2009-2010, he had been an AFS exchange student at Shaker Heights High School , Ohio, where he joined the tenor section of St.Dominic Choir and his school’s A Cappella and Chamber Choir. He also performed as a soloist in several school ceremonies with both choirs. At the end of the academic year, he was awarded the Best Male Singer of the Year from the school. A Thai Challenge to “The Ring”? SPECIAL TO THE NATION - from The Nation

For over a century, Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” has stood as the Mount Everest of the classical music world, a cycle of four monumental to be performed on four successive days, and containing within the very soul of Germanic culture’s identity — the Norse gods, the whooping Valkyries, ending with the destruction of the universe in a flaming apocalypse. Tickets to the “Ring Cycle” are hard to come by — at the Bayreuth Festival, where it started, there is a ten year waiting list. New York’s Metropolitan Opera spent $19.6 million on its most recent production of the work. So, since maverick Thai composer and sci-fi author Somtow Sucharitkul announced this month that two of his previous works, “The Silent Prince” and “Mahajanaka”, would now become the first two works in a cycle of TEN operas chronicling the Dasjati (Tossachat) — the Ten Lives of the Buddha — the operatic world has been rocking a bit. This is not yet an earthquake — seven of the
ten projected works are as yet unseen — but by definition, a cycle of ten operatic works would be the biggest piece of classical music in history. If Somtow manages to complete the cycle, it would edge out “The Ring” from the Guinness Book of Records, and a complete performance would doubtless take longer than four evenings. The third work, Bhuridat, opens this Friday at the Thailand Cultural Center. It takes as its source one of the most colorful of the ten “lives”, the story of how the Boddhisatva is incarnated as a naga prince who is captured by a cruel Brahmin snake charmer, and forced to perform to the trickster’s pipe in village squares and towns until in the end he is liberated after a Harry Potter-like magic duel between Alambayana, his captor, and Sudassana, a dragon prince. “Comparisons with ‘The Ring’ are inevitable,” said the composer, “but really the Dasjati cycle is a completely different
sort of creature. Each of the ten operas is a complete story in itself, and each of the original tales actually has as much complexity as the entire Ring Cycle anyway. So I’ve come up with storytelling techniques that are modern, and that include other media such as dance and puppetry. Together the ten works will make up a fast-moving, almost cinematic panorama of the Buddhist mythos.” Somtow has said that he’s entering “the final phase of my career” and that it’s time for him to create one big, final work as a gift to the next generation. Indeed, in reviewing the first opera in the series, which opened in Houston in 2010, this newspaper called it “a gift to the world.” Somtow said, “In five years’ time, all ten of the operas will be performed as a complete cycle in a huge Dasjati Festival, and as long as this festival is renewed every few years it will provide employment and a source for innovation and reinterpretation for artists, singers, dancers, directors, musicians, and set designers

considering the immense benefits to the country.” As far as the social network and crowdfunding is considered, Somtow has so far raised, in the last month, about a million baht in annual pledges. The ones from Thai donors, he reports, are substantial in size, but he is a little sad that the smaller donors, who make up 70% of the total number of donors, are mostly from foreign countries. “I would love everyone to feel part of this project which really focuses world attention on Thailand in an exciting new way,” he said. “So, even if you give at the lowest level of 1000 baht a year — which is just 3 baht a day — it is meaningful — it is important. It is a real act of ‘tam boon’ that will keep on giving for generations.” Asked whether he had any misgivings about taking on Wagner — and perhaps the world operatic establishment as well — Somtow said, “My only fear is not living long enough to finish it all. I’m trying hard to lose weight.”

So, this will be one of the first projects of this kind to also use crowdfunding as its third source of revenue.”

Dear Friend, I am writing to invite you join me in putting together a mighty tribute to this country, to our culture, and to our future: DASJATI - The Ten Lives of the Buddha, which, when it is completed will be the most ambitious work of music theatre in history. DASJATI will be the most extended music drama of all time, consisting of ten linked works of opera, ballet, opera-ballet, and other forms as yet unhybridized. By the year 2020, it will form the basis of a five-day performance cycle and festival that will be a destination of pilgrimage for lovers of culture, philosophy, music, and art. It will provide employment for singers, dancers, artists and designers — hopefully for decades, even centuries to come. It can draw the eyes of the world’s artistic community to Thailand in a bold new way. I have embarked on this project after ten years of reflection. I came to it quite slowly; in 2010, Opera Vista in Houston produced The Silent Prince, which is about the first of the ten great jataka tales about the Lord Buddha. The production was a sold out success and later played in Thailand in honor of HM The King; this production received praise all over the world. Last year, I mounted Mahajanaka, the second of the jataka tales, as a ballet-opera and again engendered a great deal of international attention. The success of these two creations has led me to embark on the setting of the entire Ten Lives of the Buddha, and this May we will see Bhuridatta, a ballet-opera based on the spectacular sixth jataka, at the Thailand Cultural Center. Further works will follow, performed in the new state of the art Suryadhep Music Sala, in Bangkok, in other parts of the country, until the whole cycle is completed in about five years’ time. Up till now, the “biggest work of classical music” has been Wagner’s “The Ring Cycle”, which contains four operas and is performed over four nights. The performance of the whole cycle is a very special thing and in Bayreuth, which is a kind of shrine to Wagner, tickets must be reserved ten years in advance. My Ten Lives is a different work in flavor — the lives are musically linked, but I have added dance to the mix of stage, poetry and music so that it takes place in four dimensions of art. Stylistically, the works will form a more varied tapestry — some will be operas, some ballets, some a combination of the two, some short, some long — but the total number of performers for the entire cycle will run into the thousands and a complete cycle will be played over five evenings. I have reached the closing chapters of my life. I would like to give Thailand this one lasting gift before I die — a gift that continue to renew itself and to feed the wellsprings of culture, education, religion, tourism, and patriotism, and can give employment to artists, singers, musicians, designers, directors, the education and tourism industry for generations to come. My plan in creating this work is to turn the focus the eyes of the world cultural community firmly on Thailand. Of course, being the “biggest” piece of music in history, it will inevitably attract extramusical attention, appear in the Guiness Book of records and so on, but I hope that in the end its artistic qualities will outshine the sensational aspects. To create such a monumental project will require a lot of money — around $5 million over a 5 year period — though this is no more than a single production at New York’s Metropolitan Opera might cost, and we are talking ten entire productions. But when you think of it as an investment in the future of this country, what we gain is priceless, and it is enduring. Therefore I am asking everyone — from individual music lovers to large corporations and government agencies — to pledge something towards this production over the next five years. It could be an annual gift of just 1,000 baht, or it could be 100,000 or a million. Every donation is important. Every donation will make a difference. I am beginning this project with nothing in hand except my faith in the project, in the potential audience, and in the generosity of potential patrons. เรียนทุกท่าน ผมเขียนจดหมายฉบับนี้ขึ้นเพื่อเชิญชวนท่านให้ร่วมสร้างสรรค์ผลงานที่ยิ่งใหญ่มอบเป็นบรรณาการล้ำ�ค่าแก่ประเทศชาติ วัฒนธรรม และอนาคต ในโครงการ ทศชาติ – พระชาติทั้งสิบของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งเมื่อแล้วเสร็จจะเป็นผลงานที่ยากที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ การแสดงบนเวที และเป็นสังคีตศิลป์ที่ยาวที่สุดในโลก ประกอบด้วยผลงานถึง 10 เรื่องซึ่งถ่ายทอดในรูปแบบที่อลังการด้วยศิลปะนานา แขนง กล่าวคือ มหาอุปรากร บัลเล่ต์ โอเปร่าผสมบัลเล่ต์ และอื่นๆ ในปี พ.ศ. 2563 โครงการทศชาติจะเป็นพื้นฐานในการนำ�เสนอติดต่อกันเป็นเวลา 5 วัน ในลักษณะวัฏจักร และเทศกาลที่จะนำ�ผู้ สนใจวัฒนธรรม ปรัชญา ดนตรี และศิลปะ จากทั่วโลกให้เดินทางมาชม นอกจากนั้น ยังเปิดโอกาสให้นักร้อง นักเต้น ศิลปินและนัก ออกแบบไทย ได้งานอาชีพที่ต่อเนื่องยาวนานถึงทศวรรษหรือศตวรรษ อีกทั้งน้อมนำ�ให้ชมรมศิลปินระดับโลกหันมามองความก้าวหน้าของ ประเทศไทยในด้านนวัตกรรมศิลปวัฒนธรรม ผมเริ่มโครงการนี้หลังจากใช้เวลาครุ่นคิดนานถึง 10 ปีก่อนที่จะเดินหน้าไปตามแผนอย่างเชื่องช้าและมั่นคง เมื่อปีพุทธศักราช 2554 คณะมหาอุปรากรอเมริกัน “โอเปร่าวิสต้า” ในยูสตัน สหรัฐอเมริกา ได้นำ�เสนอ “เตมีย์ใบ้” The Silent Prince ซึ่งเป็นปฐมบทของทศชาติ ชาดกที่ผมประพันธ์เป็นเรื่องแรก การแสดงครั้งนั้นประสบความสำ�เร็จท่วมท้น ต่อมาผมจึงนำ�มหาอุปรากรเรื่องนี้มาแสดงที่กรุงเทพฯ เพื่อ เฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และได้รับการกล่าวขวัญถึงอย่างชื่นชมจากนักวิจารณ์ทั่วโลก เมื่อปี 2556 ผมจัดการ แสดงทศชาติอีกหนึ่งเรื่อง ได้แก่ “พระมหาชนก” ในรูปแบบบัลเล่ต์/โอเปร่า และได้รับคำ�ชมเชยจากสื่อนานาชาติเช่นกัน ความสำ�เร็จจากผลงานทั้งสองเรื่อง เป็นแรงบันดาลให้ผมวางแผนโครงการทศชาติ ในเดือนพฤษภาคมนี้ ท่านจะได้ชม “ภูริทัต นาคราช” บัลเล่ต์/โอเปร่าจากพระชาติที่ 6 ของพระพุทธองค์ ณ ศูนย์วัฒนธรรมแห่งประเทศไทย หลังจากนั้น จะมีการนำ�เสนอพระชาติ อื่นๆ ในสถานที่แสดงต่างๆ อาทิ ศาลาดนตรีสุริยเทพ ปทุมธานี ฯลฯ จนครบวัฏจักร 10 พระชาติภายในเวลาประมาณ 5 ปี ปัจจุบันนี้เทศกาลสังคีตศิลป์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกคือ วัฏจักรวากเนอร์ (The Ring Cycle) ประกอบด้วยมหาอุปรากร 4 เรื่องของวาก เนอร์แสดงติดต่อก่อนเป็นเวลา 4 คืนที่เมืองไบรอยธ์ ซึ่งเปรียบเสมือนสถานสักการะว้ากเน่อร์ เทศกาลนี้เป็นที่นิยมสูงสุดในแวดวงผู้รักการ แสดงคลาสสิค จึงต้องมีการจองบัตรล่วงหน้านานถึง 10 ปีเพื่อเข้าชม “ทศชาติ” ของผมเป็นผลงานซึ่งมีสีสันแตกต่างออกไป เนื่องจากผมได้นำ�ความสัมพันธ์เชิงคีตศิลป์ในทศชาติชาดกมาผสมผสานกับ ลีลาระบำ�และกวีนิพนธ์ จึงส่งผลให้ “ทศชาติ” เป็นการแสดงบนเวทีในลักษณะ 4 มิติแห่งศิลปะ เช่นเดียวกับแผ่นผ้าที่ทอถักด้วยวัสดุ หลากหลาย บางเรื่องเป็นมหาอุปรากร เป็นบัลเล่ต์ บางเรื่องเป็นโอเปร่าผสมบัลเล่ต์ บางเรื่องสั้น บางเรื่องยาว แต่ศิลปินและผู้ร่วมงาน ทั้งหมดในวัฏจักรทศชาติจะมีจำ�นวนนับพัน วัฏจักรที่เสร็จสมบูรณ์จะเปิดแสดงใน 5 คืน บัดนี้ผมได้มาถึงบั้นปลายชีวิตแล้ว ก่อนตาย ผมอยากมอบผลงานที่จะยืนยงตลอดกาลเป็นของขวัญให้ประเทศชาติ ของขวัญของผม จะเป็นน้ำ�บ่อทรายที่ไม่มีวันเหือดแห้งแห่งวัฒนธรรม การศึกษา การท่องเที่ยว และชาตินิยม ตลอดจนส่งผลระยะยาวในด้านงานอาชีพให้ ศิลปิน นักร้อง นักดนตรี นักออกแบบ ฯลฯ สืบต่อไปชั่วลูกหลาน ผมสร้างสรรค์แผนงานนี้เพื่อให้ชาวโลกหันมาจับตามองศิลปวัฒนธรรมในประเทศไทย ความอลังการเป็นประวัติการณ์ของผลงานจะ เป็นจุดสนใจในโลกดนตรี และบรรทึกไว้ใน Guiness Book แต่กระนั้นผมก็ยังหวังว่าคุณภาพในด้านศิลปะจะส่งประกายโดดเด่นกว่าแง่มุ มอื่นๆ การสรรค์สร้างแผนงานอันเป็นอนุสรณ์จำ�เป็นต้องใช้ทุนทรัพย์ประมาณ 5 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ ในระยะเวลา 5 ปี งบประมาณดังกล่าว อาจไม่มากเท่าการแสดงเพียงเรื่องเดียวที่เมโทรโปลิตัน โอเปร่า นครนิวยอร์ค แต่เราสามารถผลิตผลงานได้ถึง 10 เรื่อง หากคิดว่าเป็นการ ลงทุนเพื่ออนาคตของประเทศก็สุดที่จะคุ้ม เพราะผลตอบแทนนั้นล้ำ�ค่ายิ่งนักและจะคงอยู่ยืนยงชั่วกาลนาน ดังนั้น ผมจึงใคร่วิงวอนมายังทุกท่าน จากเอกชนผู้รักดนตรีถึงบริษัทและหน่วยงานรัฐบาล ให้สละทุนทรัพย์สนับสนุนการผลิต โครงการระยะยาว 5 ปี ท่านสามารถสนับสนุนได้เป็นรายปี เงิยบริจาคของท่านไม่ว่าหลักพันหรือหลักล้าน จะช่วยให้งานนี้สัมฤทธ์ผล สมดังเจตนารมณ์ ผมเริ่มแผนงานนี้ด้วยมือเปล่า ผมไม่มีอะไรในมือนอกจากศรัทธาที่ผมมีต่อโครงการ ศรัทธาที่มีต่อผู้ชม กับความเชื่อมั่นในความเอื้อ อารีย์ของผู้สนับสนุน โปรดร่วมกับผมทำ�ให้วิทัศน์ที่สำ�คัญยิ่งเป็นรูปธรรม ด้วยความนับถือ สมเถา สุจริตกุล

The Siam Philharmonic Orchestra
The Siam Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 2002 by Somtow Sucharitkul. Originally named the MIFA Sinfonietta, the orchestra originally was intended to fulfill a need for a small symphony orchestra in Bangkok that concentrated on the core classical repertoire and brought more historically informed performance techniques to the region. In 2003, the orchestra became the resident orchestra of the Bangkok Opera. Since that time its repertoire and standing have grown tremendously. In 2005, recognizing that with its Mahler and Wagner premieres it could no longer be called a “sinfonietta”, and at the suggestion of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Bangkok Opera’s board changed the orchestra’s name to the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra. The Siam Philharmonic has a special mission to young people and from the beginning instituted a highly successful apprentice program, in which exceptionally talented students were recruited to play alongside topprofessionals. Graduate of this programme have gone on to become some of Thailand’s most wellknown instrumentalists. In 2010, the orchestra sponsored the creation of a new youth orchestra in order to widen the pool of young talent. The Siam Philharmonic is cur-

rently the most experienced opera orchestra in Southeast Asia, with a wide repertoire that includes contemporary operas as well as established classics by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Massenet, Britten, and Wagner. In 2009 it inaugurated a complete Mahler cycle which will be completed by the year 2015. Opera magazine’s critic Jonathan Richmond has said of this orchestra: “The playing was clean, taut, and full of detail. Strings were sharply disciplined to evoke a thousand feelings, while sensitive to exploring the depths of those emotions, once exposed. And the winds: just a single flute could enslave the whole Thailand Cultural Centre to the belief that Verdi’s extraordinary fiction was in fact true to life. This was music of a greatness surely more splendid than anything Bangkok has ever heard before. Bravo!” -----
สยามฟลฮารโมนิคออเคสตรากอตั้งโดย สมเถา สุจริตกุล เมื่อป พ.ศ. 2543 ภายใตชื่อ “มีฟา ซิน โฟนิเอตตา” (MIFA Sinfonietta) เพื่อสนองความ ตองการของกรุงเทพฯ ในการมีซิมโฟนีออเคสตรา ขนาดเล็กที่เนนหนักในการบรรเลงดนตรีคลาสสิค ประเภท repertoire รวมทั้งฝกฝนนักดนตรีในภาค พื้นใหพัฒนาเทคนิคการบรรเลง มีฟาซินโฟนิเอตตา ถูกจัดใหเปนวงดุริยางคในสังกัดคณะมหาอุปรากร บางกอกโอเปราตั้งแตป พ.ศ. 2544 ตอมาผลงานขอวงมีฟาซินโฟนิเอตตาไดเจริญ เติบโตและกาวไกลยิ่งขึ้น การบรรเลงคีตนิพนธของ
ปรมาจารยคีตกวีมาหเลอรและวากเนอร เมื่อป พ.ศ. 2548 ทําใหไมเหมาะที่เรียกวงดุริยางคนี้วา “ซินโฟนิ เอตตา” หรือวงดุริยางคนอยอีกตอไป จึงไดเปลี่ยน ชื่อวงจากเดิมเปน “วงดุริยางคสยามฟลฮารโมนิค” (Siam Philharmonic Orchestra) ซึ่งเปนชื่อที่ สมเด็จพระเจาพี่นางเธอเจาฟากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรม หลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร ไดทรงพระกรุณาโปรด เกลาฯ พระราชทาน ภารกิจหลักของวงดุริยางคสยามฟลฮารโมนิค ไดแก โครงการสนับสนุนเยาวชนผูพื้นฐานชั้นตน จนถึงผูประสบความสําเร็จในระดับสูง ทั้งนี้ดวยการ เสาะหาเยาวชนผูมีพรสวรรคมาฝกสอนและเปดโอ กาสใหแสดงฝมือเคียงบาเคียงไหลนักดนตรีอาชีพ ผูมีความสามารถในฐานะสมาชิกเต็มขั้นของวงดุริ ยางคโดยไมมีการจํากัดอายุ เยาวชนผูผานโครงการ นี้จะไดกาวไปสูระดับแนวหนาของศิลปนไทยผูมีชื่อ เสียงเดนดัง โดยในป 2553 วงสยามฟลฮารโมนิคไดสนับสนุน การกอตั้งวงดุริยางคเยาวชนสยามซินโฟนิเอตตา เพื่อรวมรวบเหลานักดนตรีทั้มีพรสวรรคเพื่อเตรียม ตัวเปนนักดนตรีอาชีพที่ดีในอนาคต ปจจุบัน สยามฟลฮารโมนิคเปนวงดุริยางคที่มี ประสบการณ การบรรเลงเพลงโอเปราสู งสุ ดแห ง ภาคพื้นเอเชียอาคเนย จากผลงานที่หลากหลาย ทั้งบทเพลงรวมสมัยและคีตนิพนธจากคีตกวีระดับ ปรมาจารย อาทิ โมสารท แวรดี ปุชชินี มาเซเนต บริเตนและวากเนอร เปนตน และวงดุริยางคสยาม ฟลฮารโมนิคไดเริ่มนําเสนอ “วงจรมาหเลอร” ครบ ทั้ง 11 บท ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2552 - 2558

Vilmos Olah won the 1st Prize in the Janos Koncz Hungarian National Competition three times, in 1986, 1989, and 1992. In 1995, Mr. Olah won the prestigious First Prize at the Grand Luc Adolph International Competition in Luxembourg. Vilmos Olah then became leader of the Camerata Transylvanica Orchestra and, with this ensemble, reached international recognition as a soloist performing concerts in Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, France, and the Netherlands.. In 2000, he won 1st Prize at the Leo Weiner Chamber Music Competition in both the string trio and solo sonata categories. He also won the Best Performance Prize for his definitive and stellar performance of the Weiner Sonata. 2005-2010: principle violin with the famed Auer String Quartet which performed internationally to wide acclaim. During his tenure with the ASQ, Olah participated in their recordings of four CDs for Hungaraton, including the Laszlo Lajtha Complete String Quartets, winning the coveted Lajtha Prize. He serves and has served as concert master for the renowned Hungarian Radio Orchestra. Mr. Olah also served as guest concert master of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Hungarian State Opera, Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Strings, and was appointed concertmaster of the Bangkok Opera Orchestra. He has performed as a solo artist in , Switzerland, Germany, China, Viet Nam, Cuba, United States, Thailand, Sweden, Finland, and Austria, in many cases, as a gifted and inspired teacher, offering master classes for students in the various countries. He has also performed as a solo artist for live broadcasts with the Hungarian Radio Orchestra. Most recently, Vilmos Olah travelled to the United States for the US premiere of Eric Funk’s groundbreaking work, “Vili: Concerto for the Violin Alone, Op 109”, which he premiered in Budapest, March 12, 2012, this project the subject of a PBS-TV one hour documentary THE VIOLIN ALONE which will be released internationally in the fall of 2013. Choreographer • ออกแบบท่าระบำ� Puwarate wongatichart ภูวเรศ วงศ์อติชาติ Puwarate graduated from Bangkok University with a bachelor’s degree majoring in advertising management. While studying in university, he had been assigned to be choreographer for Lakornnitade (Faculty of Communication Arts’ Drama) Bangkok University for several plays such as ‘Lakornnitade Bangkok University XVI The Five Volunteer’, ‘Lakornnitade Bangkok University XVIII – รัตติกาลครั้งหนึ่ง’, ‘Lakornnitade Bangkok University XX – ผมคิดถึง แม่แบบมหัศจรรย์’. Then, he got many wonderful chances to design fantastic shows for big events of many companies such as Singha Corporation, Otop, etc.. Besides, it’s an his honors to have the opportunities to work for Somtow Sucharitkul’s operas as a choreographer which are the ‘Otello’ and the ‘Mae Naak’ in 2003, and in 2011 he had the chance to go to London for UK premiere of Mae Naak. Moreover, he did choreograph for the ‘Reya The Muscal’ ‘Silent Prince’ ‘Suriyothai’ ‘Dan-no-Ura’ and ‘The Magic Flute.’ Now, he have his own team named “Step Dsign” which aims to do the performing arts., that recently one of the contestants of Thailand’s got talent season 3, under the name of “New blood”. My latest work is to be the choreographer for ballet-opera ‘Suriyothai’ which once again directed by Somtow Sucharitkul.

Hoop and Silk Aerial Training ARAYA was born and raised in Bangkok. After completing highschool at Dramatic Arts College, She headed to Chulalongkorn university for education and got an honour Bachelor’s Degree in western dance, Fine and Applied Arts. She is a young and talented girl who has more than ten years of experience in show business both in front of the camera and doing behind-the-scenes work. She has been a back-up dancer for many famous artists in Thailand ( Bird - Thongchai McIntyre, Marsha Wattanapanich) and dance instructor for many years. In 2003 ,she got the chance to come out with a music album named “๒ อิน ๑” with her twin sister. She is dynamic and unique in bringing together her particular skills, combines her knowledge and experience in acting, choreography and music into unparalleled performances which have fulfilled and exceeded clients’ needs and expectations under the name “The Show” and because she never stops learning, She took up aerial acrobatics , now she has her own acrobatics school of circus art called “Aerial Factory”

After finishing high school from Mater Dei Institute and Wathana Withaya Academy, Bangkok, Thaithow Sucharitkul continued her study in the United Kingdom at Winkfield Place and received her diploma in Home Economics and later on in the United States, where she has her training in studio arts graduate studies. Thaithow married Professor Dr. Sompong Sucharitkul, former Ambassador of Thailand to several countries in Europe. Thaithow Sucharitkul spent the past two decades in San Francisco with her husband after his return to academia. Her last association with an American University was in the position of Associate Director of the Bangkok Summer Program offered by Golden Gate University School of Law. During her stay in the United States, Thaithow Sucharitkul produced two of her son’s (Somtow Sucharitkul) movies as well as several renowned operas for Bangkok Opera, an opera company under the umbrella of Bangkok Opera Foundation. She also spends part of her time using

her literary skill, writing novels in her own name, and translating her son’s books from English into Thai. Her most popular novel “Dok Som Si Thong” was made into the talk-of-the-town television series and the first Thai Broadway-styled musical “Reya the Musical.” In the year 2013, Thaithow was given an award for ‘Pride and Prime’ student of Wathana Withaya Academy. She was also honoured with ‘Narathuip Award’ as acclaimed writer from The Writers’ Association of Thailand as well as ‘Surintraja’ Award for Best Translator from Translators and Interpreters Association of Thailand.

Founding member of the Bangkok Opera Foundation, Nadaprapai began her musical career in the 1970s when she sang a solo in her brother Somtow’s Rock Mass on Dutch television at the age of 14 on the Evangelische Omroep network. She had actually previously appeared in theatre and television, performing classical Thai dance on Thai TV since she was 3 years old. Nadaprapai is active in charity concerts, and performed in a leading role in the classical Thai music drama Wassawattana Nai Fun before his majesty the King of Thailand. With a doctorate in political science from the University of Paris, Nadaprapai has had a hand in many areas of show business, including a stint as a club singer, a small role in Opera Siam’s inaugural production of Madana, and chorus roles in productions such as Somtow’s Requiem: In Memorial 9/11. Nadaprapai’s experience as a producer started with the much praised Opera Siam’s production of Aida which reimagined the story as taking place during the Siamese-Burmese Wars of the Ayuthaya period of Thai history. She was the executive producer of Mae Naak UK Tour in 2011. Nadaprapai also produced the world premiere of Somtow Sucharitkul’s Queen Sirikit Concerto which was presided over by both Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. In 2012, she was the producer of the internationally acclaimed “REQUIEM For The Mother Of Songs”, composed and conducted by Somtow. In 2013, Nadaprapai produced the first example of an innovative art form, the Ballet-Opera “Suriyothai” composed and directed by Somtow in honour of HM The Queen of Thailand staged at the Thailand Cultural Centre. It was one of the most successful events in the history
of art and culture in the region. Last year Nadaprapai Produced the opera “Dan no Ura” based on the tale of the Heike in honor of the birthday of HM the Queen of Thailand. With The National Legislative Assembly and The Bangkok Opera Foundation, she was also the producer of “988 Concert” to celebrate HM the King’s Birthday.

ในปี 2555 นฎาประไพ รับหน้าที่เป็นผู้อำ�นวย การผลิตให้กับ “The Requiem for the mother of Songs” ของ ไมสโตรสมเถา ซึ่งได้รับการ กล่ า วขวั ญ ยกย่ อ งในวงการดนตรี ค ลาสสิ ก ทั่ ว โลก ว่าเป็นผลงานชิ้นโบว์แดงของศตวรรษ ไมสโตรสม เถา ใช้เวลาบรรจงรังสรรค์งานประพันธ์ชิ้นนี้ถึง 4 ปีเต็ม เพื่อน้อมรำ�ลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณอันหา ที่สุดมิได้ แห่งสมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอฯ กรมหลวง นราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ องค์พระอุปถัมภ์ของมูลนิธิ มหาอุปรากรกรุงเทพ พระมารดาแห่งวงการดนตรี คลาสสิกของประเทศไทย ในปี 2556 รับหน้าที่เป็นผู้อำ�นวยการผลิต “สุริ โยทัย” บัลเล่ต์-โอเปร่าเฉลิมพระเกียรติ สมเด็จพระ นางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ของสมเถา สุจริตกุล ซึ่งประพันธ์ขึ้นโดยอาศัยเค้าโครงเรื่องจากตำ�นาน ประวัติศาตร์ไทย ซึ่งสร้างประวัติศาสตร์ให้แก่วงการ ดนตรีคลาสสิกของไทย โดยมีผู้เข้าชมเต็มหอประชุม ใหญ่ ศูนย์วัฒนธรรมแห่งประเทศไทยทั้ง 9 รอบ หรือกว่า 13,000 คน และใน ปี 2557 นฎาประไพรับหน้าที่เป็น ผู้อำ�นวยการผลิตโอเปร่า “ดัน โน อุระ” จาก เค้าโครงเรื่องตำ�นานแห่งเฮเกะ ประวัติศาสตร์ นิพนธ์ชิ้นสำ�คัญแห่งเกาะญี่ปุ่น รอบปฐมทัศน์โลก เพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรม ราชินีนาถ รวมถึงเป็นผู้อำ�นวยการผลิตให้แก่ โครงการจัดแสดงคอนเสิร์ตเฉลิมพระเกียรติ “ก้าวสู่ ๘๘ พรรษา องค์ราชัน” โดยสภานิติบัญญัติแห่งชาติ ร่วมกับมูลินิธิมหาอุปรากรกรุงเทพ และล่าสุด “ภูริ ทัตนาคราช” บัลเล่ต์-โอเปร่า ในโครงการจัดแสดง “ทศชาติ” โดย สมเถา สุจริตกุล
