QUESTIONS WITH PHILIPP DIETLIN
DEPUTY DIRECTOR - COMMERCIAL & MARKETING AT LAO AIRLINES
1: Can you tell us about your journey to becoming the Deputy Director - Commercial & Marketing at Lao Airlines?
I am originally from Switzerland. After graduating from university, my first job was helping to start up Nok Air in Thailand. Later, I went to HK Express, a low-cost airline based in Hong Kong. After a few years in the travel technology sector, I decided to move to Laos and work with Lao Airlines.
2: What inspired you to pursue a career in the aviation industry?
M y parents were hotel managers so was involved in the travel industry from early on and loved the interaction with people from all over the world. So, I definitely wanted to do something in that area. What drew me to aviation was the thrill of flying. I am still amazed by the engineering marvel that allows airplanes to take off and fly us safely all over the world.
3: What are your main responsibilities at Lao Airlines?
I work on the commercial side of the business. I look after eCommerce and distribution, working with our distribution partners like online travel agencies but also encouraging more people to book directly on our website and mobile app. My team and I are also developing new services, like the ability to select a seat or purchase travel insurance. This gives more choices to our customers and opens up new revenue streams for Lao Airlines.
4: What sets Lao Airlines apart from other airlines in the region?
Apart from serving major cities like Bangkok, Hanoi, or Seoul, we also operate some smaller routes like from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai or from Pakse to Ho Chi Minh City. This is in line with our strategy of connecting Laos regionally and internationally. This is something our competitors don’t do. We are also proud that we have partnerships with more than 30 airlines around the world to bring more visitors to Laos, boosting trade and development.
5: How has Lao Airlines adapted to changes in customer behavior and preferences, especially post-pandemic?
I am not sure there will be lasting effects from the pandemic. People forget quickly. I would like to think that Laos, which offers unspoiled natural experiences, can benefit as a destination. Especially among people in Asia’s crowded urban areas. However, other developments, like the opening of the high-speed rail between Vientiane and Kunming, will have a more lasting effect on some of our routes, compared to the pandemic.
8: What are some exciting developments or future plans for Lao Airlines?
In 2025, we plan to open more exciting new routes from Laos, both domestic and international. We have also big plans to improve our website and mobile app by letting customers manage their bookings and add additional services to enhance their journey with us. So make sure you follow Lao Airlines on social media so you don’t miss any of our upcoming announcements and promotions.
6: Can you share some of the innovative marketing strategies Lao Airlines has implemented recently?
E arlier this year we celebrated our 35th anniversary. We offered a 35% discount for bookings on our website and mobile app. We have never received so many bookings in one day. It broke all records! A few weeks ago, we also launched an innovative partnership with JDB Bank which allows users to conveniently book Lao Airlines flights directly in the JDB mobile app.
9: What trends do you foresee in the aviation industry in Laos, and how is Lao Airlines positioning itself to stay competitive?
Competition will increase, both from domestic and international airlines. The management of Lao Airlines is fully aware of this and a lot of reforms are currently underway to make the airline more competitive. We are upgrading our IT systems, launching new digital services, and bringing in foreign talent like myself in order to transform the airline into a small but capable regional airline.
7: How do you leverage digital marketing to enhance customer engagement and brand loyalty?
One of the key advantages of digital marketing is that we can target a very specific audience. This allows us to reach travelers in overseas markets who have never heard of Lao Airlines. For instance, we can target people across Europe who have shown interest in traveling to Laos. We can then promote our services to them and direct them to our website to book a flight.
10: You must have traveled a bit around Laos already. What are some of your favorite places?
I am from Switzerland so I love the mountains. Phongsaly in the north has definitely captured my heart. I am also looking forward to exploring more of the natural beauty of Xaysomboun province, especially during the cool season. You can also regularly find me in Luang Prabang where I just competed in the city’s annual Half Marathon.

THE LAO NATIONAL CIRCUS’ JOURNEY FROM CAVE TO CENTER STAGE
Text by: Jason Rolan
Photos by: Phoonsab Thevongsa
As the lights dim in the round interior of the auditorium, the boisterous crowd falls silent with anticipation as fog spreads through the air. A spotlight breaks through the stillness, revealing the MC in a suit and bowtie. “Welcome to the Lao National Circus!” his voice booms, met by the crowd’s cheers.
Among the Lao arts, the circus stands out as something unique. While not entirely traditional, its origins are deeply intertwined with Laos’ modern history. In 1966, at the height of the war, a circus troupe was formed in Houaphan Province to boost the morale of revolutionary troops and local people. This was the precursor to today’s Lao National Circus. Even during aerial bombardments, they performed in what is now known as the Circus Cave in Viengxay.
In 1990, an impressive performance venue shaped like a circus tent was gifted by the Soviet Union. Many still call it the Russian Circus, even though the performers are all Lao.
Over the decades, the acts have evolved, featuring acrobatics, Cyr wheels, clowns, jugglers, contortionists, balancing acts, and magicians, delighting thousands of Lao people in Vientiane and throughout the country.

Performances by the Lao National Circus are usually held during official holidays. Follow their Facebook (Lao National Circus) for showtimes and other information.

CINEMA Stars UNDER THE
BLUE CHAIR FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS IN DECEMBER
WFor more information and a full list of films, visit bluechair.film
Getting there:
Lao Airlines flies regularly to Luang Prabang from Vientiane, Hanoi, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai
hat m ay be Asia’s most unlikely international film festival returns this December to Luang Prabang, as Blue Chair and its partners bring the best of contemporary Southeast Asian cinema to the idyllic UNESCO World Heritage town, where the last movie theater closed in 1985.
Entirely free of charge, this year's event, from 5 to 9 December, will showcase a range of feature and short films, both fiction and documentary — everything from Thai blockbusters to Singaporean experimental shorts to award-winning arthouse offerings from Vietnam. Additional activities include live performances, public discussions, and filmmaker Q&As.
Founded fifteen years ago as the Luang Prabang Film Festival, with a mission to support the nascent Lao film industry by providing Lao filmmakers the opportunity to connect with and experience work by their regional peers, the Blue Chair’s focus on films from the ten-country region has made it a favorite among filmmakers as well, many of whom are eager to attend for networking, meeting with audiences, and brainstorming their next projects over a cold Beerlao on the banks of the Mekong.
In 2022, Director Martina Escobar and Producer Monster Jiminez, both from the Philippines, shared their film Leonor Will Never Die at the festival; afterward, they explained to the audience that they had in fact met in Luang Prabang at the 2016 festival — that Leonor wouldn't exist without the event.
"People sometimes ask if we do awards," says Sean Chadwell, Executive Director at Blue Chair. "We don't. Luang Prabang is the perfect atmosphere for connecting with fellow filmmakers, planning the next project, and appreciating what's in front of you. Why get in the way of all that?"
The festival's main night venue routinely hosts more than 1,200 guests, who show up for the town's biggest screen, while it lasts. "As a free festival," Chadwell explains, "this is part of the point: doing what we can to build an audience for domestic cinema."
“ Presenting the festival for free is a challenge, though,” says Vone Liosakoun, Blue Chair Programs Manager. "But a big reason we can is the support of the Luang Prabang hospitality community." Indeed, this year, more than 20 local hotels are partnering with Blue Chair to host filmmakers and VIP guests for the festival.

SPIRITED ADVENTURES
Navigating Vientiane's craft cocktail landscape
TEXT BY EVAN DIXON
PHOTOGRAPHS BY 525, GALLERY38, AND ARTISAN BAR
Bucolic riverside Vientiane, with its slow, sun-drenched streets, seems a world away from the decidedly urban phenomenon of the ‘craft cocktail’. Yet, scratch beneath the city’s sleepy surface and you will find that recent years have brought a flourish of innovative venues staffed with masterfully creative mixologists. What’s more, the exciting variety of establishments popping up in the Lao capital has something for everyone, from upscale drinking and dining to secret speakeasies to cigar bars. Let’s take a look at some of the standout craft cocktail bars in Vientiane!
GETTING THERE

ADVENTURES
525
525 sits in a stately downtown Vientiane neighborhood, just a stone’s throw from the serene Mekong River; past the lush garden, replete with scenic outdoor seating, and into the polished yet understated interior, guests are transported into a world of comfort and warm hospitality. The brainchild of owner Andrew Sykes, 525 is a transplant from nearby Luang Prabang, carrying with it something of the refinement of the former royal capital’s hospitality. Yet, it’s far from stuffy, as Andrew notes, “It isn’t about having ‘the best’ cocktails, it’s about making people feel welcome.” His people-first approach isn’t limited to guests, either, as Andrew has made his staff co-owners in an effort to build the best possible service equitably—an approach that pays off in a genuine guest experience unrivaled in the city.
But 525 delivers on the promise of craft in its cocktail selection, as well. The house rendition of a Paper Plane is excellently executed, harmoniously blending the traditional four ingredients of bourbon, amaro, Aperol, and citrus juice. In this case, the sweet and slightly smoky base of Woodford Reserve bourbon is nicely tempered by the citrusy Aperol, balanced and deepened by the complex bittersweet and aromatic Amaro Averna, which brings hints of orange and licorice, with notes of myrtle, juniper berries, rosemary, and sage. Fresh lemon juice and a
vigorous shake even out the flavor profile and texture of the drink, imbuing it with a pleasant mouthfeel that delivers on refreshment but also packs a punch.
The menu’s offerings are dynamic, with occasional guest bartenders and seasonal selections bringing fresh, vibrant flavors. One such standout drink, The Japanese, created especially for Negroni Week, reimagines the typical bitter and powerfully strong drink with lighter Japanese flavors. Innovatively, the drink adds sweet sushi rice, softening the traditionally overpowering negroni and leveraging its full flavor potential. Topped with a sprig of bubbly kelp—Japanese sea grapes— each drink gains a bit of complexity from the savory, saline aroma of the garnish.
Recently broadening the culinary selection to include a full brunch menu, 525 is open daily from 9:00 am until late, at 8 Watchan Village, just around the corner from Salana Boutique Hotel. Learn more at: 525eatanddrink.com
GALLERY 38
Turning off one of downtown Vientiane’s busiest streets, onto a small side street, up a flight of stairs and past a quiet café, to a seeming dead end… yet, with just the right pressure, a burnished wood panel gives way, revealing Gallery 38, one of Vientiane’s coolest speakeasy craft cocktail bars. Inside, the atmosphere lives up to the name, with a proliferation of oil paintings adorning the walls.
Gallery 38’s cocktail offerings match the interior for an intriguingly eccentric visual flair. The Gin 38, a house specialty consisting of gin, rose perfume, lemon juice, and rosewater, is served in an almost comically oversized glass, topped up with soda water to balance the strong gin and floral flavors. This longest of long drinks goes down very easy, with the citrusy effervescence of the soda water keeping the aromatic rose from overpowering the drink, a great thirst quencher for the steamy summer nights.
But the menu isn’t all so light and flowery. For a more savory flavor, the Neat Truffle blends gin sous vide with truffle, apple juice, basil, pandan, and lemon juice, all of which combine in an intriguing, idiosyncratic symphony of tastes—and the musty, musky truffle is, thankfully, not lost in the shuffle.
Gallery 38 is located on Rue Manthathourath, just above Kaltura Café and across from Hard Rock Cafe, and opens nightly from 7:00 pm to midnight. Learn more at: fb.com/gallery38.societyofdrinkers
ARTISAN BAR
Artisan Bar, a Vientiane establishment with a sister location in Luang Prabang, has been serving up fine drinks from its dramatically lit and sophisticated interior for years. Indeed, the visual impact of the interior cannot be understated, from the impressive stone slab bar top to the smartly dressed bartenders across it, stepping over the threshold one moves into a dark world of stark elegance and decadent pleasures—for lovers of smoke, Artisan also boasts a cigar lounge with an extensive selection of fine cigars.
While the bow-tied bartenders are well-versed in the classics, the real stand-outs are the Artisan specialties. The Artisan Creamy, for example, mixes up an extensive variety of flavors, with cherry heering, Disaronno, cacao liquor, and aloe vera juice all folded into the smoothness of cream liqueur.
For a lighter drink, guests should opt for the delectably refreshing Wild Honey and Pandan, in which house-infused pandan rum dances with honey and citrus, topped up with a bit of soda and poured over ice. The smoky herbaceous aroma of the pandan pairs nicely with the sweet and slightly floral honey and a tang of lime—a perfect drink to cool off from a hot and humid Vientiane evening.
Artisan Bar is just around the corner from the Sacred Heart Cathedral, on Sakarin Road, and opens Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 pm until midnight. Learn more at: fb.com/artisanvientiane

CRAFTING THE PAST
On the south end of Luang Prabang sits a large concrete space on the east side of the main street which was, until recently, a very popular and beloved field for jogging, exercising, and sometimes even courting. Toward the rear, a whitewashed wall and some lofty spired old stupas are visible. Wat That Luang temple lies behind the former field in an elevated position where the king and important dignitaries could participate in and observe religious ceremonies. Old photos show that the temple was much more visible with significantly less vegetation than what it has now.
The field was believed to be Souan Thaen, the divine garden where Nang Kang Hi (a prominent figure in Luang Prabang folklore) harvested her limes. It’s where many important cremations took place in the past, the last significant one being in 2008 when the abbot of Wat Sene passed away and was cremated on an elaborately constructed pyre. Many important dignitaries attended this ceremony and hundreds of monks from all the temples in Luang Prabang participated in the ritual.
Getting there:
Lao Airlines has flights to Luang Prabang from Vientiane, Pakse, Hanoi, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Siem Reap
The village of That Luang contained many residences of the former aristocracy in the early part of the twentieth century and its temple has played a significant role in the former kingdom of Laos. Before the temple was built in its current incarnation there were two important temples on this site, Wat Keo Fa and Wat Passamam, whose relics have been found dating back to the twelfth century. Ties to the third-century Indian King Asoka via a Bodhi tree on the site have also been mentioned.
Entering Wat That Luang (Monastery of the Royal Stupa) you pass under an ornate gate, through a shady garden with various Buddha statues under a grove, and a long row of gilded Buddhas greet you on the right-hand side. The main building to the left looks quite subdued as far as temples go. It has a double-tiered roof and the ordination hall is white-washed with no decorations or murals on its façade. On the grounds are two traditional longboats that compete in the Boat Racing Festival each year and a large tower with a buffalo skin drum that is beaten at 4 pm each full and new moon. In front of the temple is the large golden-tiled stupa containing the ashes of King Sisavangvong. Behind the hall, a second larger stupa is said to contain ancient Buddhist artifacts and is decorated with some dark blue glazed tiles.
Recently, the temple has undergone renovations, with a new roof, floor, and altar on the cards. Mr. Vilasith from Ban Nasangveuy aged about 55, stands casually leaning against the altar of the temple of That Luang. With one hand on the hip of his white paint-spattered pants, and a cigarette dangling nonchalantly out of his mouth, he says that he learned his restoration skills in Vientiane. He's the man to call for temple repairs such as ceilings, plasterwork, or any of the other nearlyforgotten skills needed for preservation. He even travels around the country to restore other Buddhist treasures. He is not a monk - and he never has been - he is just a layman who wants to teach his skills to the younger generation.
At the temple, a young novice, aged about thirteen, is applying white plaster curlicues to the main altar of the Buddha. Vilasith feels it is important that his skills be passed on as he guides the restoration of the fragile plasterwork covering the finely detailed plinth. Using a 50-50 mixture of putty and latex he turns out molds of various designs filled with plaster that are then glued onto the altar. I wondered where they got the molds from, after all the temple was built in 1818, and the originals are likely long gone. The novice tells me that they make the molds from existing details on the altar, an ingenious way to work with what you have. Elsewhere in the temple, young novices with stencils are embellishing the black wooden shutters and columns, refreshing traditional Buddhist symbols with new coats of golden paint.
The black Buddha on the rear altar wears a shroud of orange cloth with hands held up in the “calling for peace” posture. This is the most valuable Buddha in the hall - even more valuable than the massive golden Buddha on the main altar, bought here from Wat Aham.
Renovating and restoring a temple is often a joyous occasion with much laughter and camaraderie and shows the ongoing importance of the village temple to the local community. Still, an integral part of village life, when there is work to be done hands can easily be found. Women are also here to do their bit and are up and down planks with wheelbarrows taking cement to patch up the floor.
Wat That Luang, though not often mentioned as much in tourist literature as some of the more popular temples in town, is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in Lao history. Its novice population is one of the largest in town and the garden and surroundings are peaceful with some interesting corners to explore. Sometimes, it’s also possible to witness traditional skills in action, if the timing is right.
Located in the heart of Luang Prabang, 15-minute drive from the International Airport, Villa Maly Boutique Hotel offers 32 tastefully designed rooms, featuring a French colonial décor, in refurbished structures originally built in 1938, surrounded by a lush tropical garden. Escape to a place where time slows, and home truly awaits.
