Exploring Martin Mere This summer holiday, children of all ages can discover their inner adventurer by becoming fully fledged Nature Explorers at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre. Here, they can follow in the footsteps of Scott of the Antarctic (father of WWT’s founder Sir Peter Scott) by going on an array of ‘wild’ adventures and recording them in a special Nature Explorer passport. Adventures to tick off include taking a watery safari, building mini-rafts, pond dipping, hand feeding rare birds, going on big bug hunts to discover all sorts of creepy crawlies and lots, lots more. Summer 2015 at WWT Martin Mere has just got much more exciting. Little explorers can begin their voyage

of discovery by picking up a Nature Explorer passport from the front desk and collecting stickers for each of the activities they take part in, working their way up to gold. What’s more if children don’t have enough time to fill in their passport they can visit again for free to complete their mission over the summer holidays. Complete 6 or more activities and get a gold sticker from a ranger in our daily 4pm award ceremony. WWT Warden, Tom Clare said: “Being a Nature Explorer is great fun for all the family and really helps kids get interested in all sorts of wildlife. We’ll be on hand to help Nature Explorers complete some of their challenges, so come along and join us for an unforgettable summer of adventure.”

80% of a child’s

learning is achieved through vision! Would you know if your child was struggling with their vision? Children rarely complain about their sight, but often show in their behaviour that they have a problem with their vision. You may notice that they sit too close to the television, rub their eyes a lot, hold books very close to their face, blink excessively, they may have one eye shut, or it turns inwards or outwards. It could be that they are struggling with their reading and writing at school. Below are some other tell-tale signs that indicate your child may need assessing at our Vision Therapy Clinic. • Reads slowly hesitantly • Loses place easily • Skips lines / words • Poor comprehension • Tilt their head when reading or writing • Repeatedly skips or re-reads words or letters • Moves their head excessively when reading across the page • Have you ever noticed one eye turning in, out, up or down • Little interest in sports • Difficulty with multitasking Do any of these sound familiar to you? iSIGHT Clinic Southport a comfortable, private clinic introduces Orthoptic Vision Therapy, where we can help diagnose and treat visual problems in children. It is very common for children to enter school with visual problems and still learn to read. Initially the problem may not be noticed as the print type is big and long 16

periods of attention are not needed. It is often only when the child acquires word recognition ability, and attempts to keep reading smaller print for longer periods, that difficulties may arise. iSIGHT Clinic’s Senior Orthoptist, Jayne Court, will carry out a detailed, non-invasive and fun assessment in a child friendly environment with parents present. We will screen your child for lazy eyes, diagnose defects of binocular vision (double or blurred vision), ocular mobility, saccadic eye movements and some abnormalities of the eye, all of which play a vital part in your child’s ability to read. Jayne, will also detect if your child has reduced vision in one or both eyes. It is important to check this as many children will not realise they have reduced vision. The earlier the problems are picked up the better the outcome. If you have any concerns about your child’s vision and eyes, reading and writing ability, or if there is a family history of squints, turns in the eye, it is important that you do not delay. For the summer months we have a special introductory offer of £75.00 for a new patient consultation and assessment, which may last up to an hour, a saving of £35.00 on the usual fee of £110.00 when you quote 123GO. 07519 992 587 www.facebook.com/katiedesilvaphotography I first found my love for taking photos when I went travelling through South East Asia in 2004 after finishing college. I found the most beautiful people and sights to photograph and found myself engrossed in absorbing the environment around me.

When I returned I went on to study Black & white film photography at North Glasgow College, learning the art form and science of developing and printing my own work. I learnt to capture everything as it is in it’s most natural form, embracing natural light. I love capturing every special moment in life, seeing that perfect photo opportunity and seizing that chance to capture a moment in time in the most beautiful way. Capturing the light, the moment, the emotion and producing an image for us to keep and look back on for the rest of our lives, a moment that we can relive each time it is seen.

Looking after your children’s eyes Your child’s eyes are special. In the early years, vision helps children find out about the world around them.

Later, at school, about 80% of what is taught is presented visually. Being able to see clearly is therefore incredibly important in your child’s development. Most very young children have their eyesight assessed by a health visitor as part of their routine developmental checks. It’s important to maintain regular checks on children’s eyes, so Specsavers recommend that your child has their first eye test by the age of three. This means that any problems they may have are identified early, helping set them up for a happy and fulfilled school life. Not being able to see clearly can be confusing in a busy classroom, and poor eyesight can contribute to learning and behavioural problems. Conditions such as squint and amblyopia (lazy eye) are usually treated more effectively if they are picked up earlier, and that could make a huge difference. Young children may not find it easy to explain the difficulties they are having, or may not even be aware they have a sight problem. It can also be difficult for parents or carers to tell if a child has sight problems, which is why regular tests are so important. However, here are some things to watch out for: • Consistently sitting very close to the TV or holding a book very close • Losing their place when reading, or using a finger to guide their eyes • Straining their eyes or tilting their head to see better • Frequent eye rubbing

34

• Sensitivity to light and/or excessive tearing • Closing one eye to read, to watch TV or just to see better • Avoiding activities which require near vision, such as reading or homework • Avoiding activities which require distance vision, such as sports or other recreational activities • Complaining of headaches or tired eyes • Avoiding use of a computer or tablet because it ‘hurts their eyes’ • Falling behind in school You should also look out for a ‘turn’ in the eye or a misdirection of the eye Finally, if you ever see a ‘white reflex’ in photographs, (similar to ‘red-eye’ except the pupil appears white) you should seek medical attention immediately, as this is extremely serious. For young children the optician can use special charts with shapes or pictures. This means we can still test their eyes even if they can’t read. Our opticians also know that a test room could feel intimidating to a small child, so they will make it feel as welcoming as possible. You will, of course, be able to stay with your child throughout the test, and at the end the optician will explain the results of the eye test to you. Eye tests for children up to 16 (up to 19 if they are in full time education) are free, paid for by the NHS, and if they need glasses, an NHS voucher will be issued that you can use to get glasses completely free of charge.

It just may be the best day out, that’s right on your doorstep ... Thousands of people flock each week to watch the mighty Southport FC play at the Merseyrail Community Stadium – and thanks to their ongoing commitment to families and youngsters, so can you at an amazing price. Season tickets ahead of Southport’s 2015/2016 Vanarama National League campaign are now on sale, with the club determined to be one of the very best value for money teams in the league. With no price increase, season tickets are on sale now via the Secretary’s office at the Merseyrail Community Stadium. Prices for adults in the main stand are £258 with concessions for the over 65s at £189. Adults who stand in the ground terrace will pay just £232 while the Over 65’s concessions is £172. Southport FC have once again placed a huge emphasis on the Yellow’s teenage support as they reveal 12-18 year old season tickets are at an exceptional value of just £55. Southport have hit the headlines in the last few seasons with the BBC Best Value Football survey and hope to do so once again. So it really is an opportunity not to be missed. Club chairman Charlie Clapham said: “We are all looking forward to an exciting season with Paul Carden. The season ticket offers excellent value and rewards loyalty. “Our £55 teenage ticket once again gives our younger supporters a great incentive to support their home town club.”

Primary and Junior School pupils in Southport are being encouraged to support the Club as well, thanks to the ever growing Yellow Bird Club Card sponsored by The Champion. The Yellow Bird Club allows primary and junior pupils across the resort the chance to visit home games for free when they are accompanied by a paying adult. The Yellow Bird Club, starting its third season, is a joint initiative between Champion Newspapers and Southport Football Club aiming to attract the next generation of the town to support the club as they strive for Football League status. Commercial and Community Director, Haydn Preece, said: “This is fantastic, is family based and aims to bring in our future fans. “The Yellow Bird Club is the biggest across town marketing project we have ever undertaken!”

Soccer Camps

Southport FC’s soccer camps are a great opportunity for youngsters to come along and enjoy football. All children between the ages of 6 and 14 are welcome and all abilities are catered for. Dates to be announced on the Southport FC website at www.southportfc.net

From Fish & Chips to Fine Dining Southport has it all! Southport is home to a superb choice of places to eat from tearooms to fine dining restaurants and fish and chip shops to tapas bars. A group of the leading independent restaurants in the town set up the Southport Restaurateurs Association (SRA) which is now in its’ tenth year. Members offer a fantastic choice of cuisines including French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese (sushi), American and Thai – not to mention traditional British. Bob Warrior, chair of the SRA, says, “As

well as a real choice of cuisine styles and décor one of the things the Association is proud of is the enthusiasm and pride which owners have in their businesses. The passion for what they do is amazing, nothing is too much trouble. And not being tied to a ‘national menu’ means they can change dishes to suit the season and offer daily specials created from some of the best ingredients they can source.” All the restaurants try to buy as much of their fresh produce locally and regionally as is possible – supporting the local economy and ensuring the freshest and best quality

The Strand is changing All eyes are on Bootle’s shopping centre The Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle is changing… and there’s something very exciting going on this year!

2015 is a year of change for The Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, we have new owners, a new team and a great new look to kick start some of the great changes ahead! Bought in November 2014 by Ellandi, the award winning shopping centre group, The Strand in Bootle is undergoing a huge renovation project. From new toilets, lighting, lifts, internal and external works and car parking improvements to new stores opening, 2015 is set to be a historic year for the centre. This year we have a whole host of exciting and fun events taking place at the Centre, from our Easter visit from Rice City Lane Farm to our summer nautical themed fun to keep the children entertained over the summer holidays and loads more to come! To start, in April we launched our Kids Craft Zone which will be a permanent fixture in the centre at half terms and school holidays - it’s totally free and a chance for us to welcome our little shoppers into the centre. Each holiday time we will have different themed crafts running, so please come down and join in the fun! Lucy Kirk, Marketing Manager said, “We want to engage with our families of loyal shoppers and be more approachable to the public to spread the word about the great things we are doing here to make The Strand better for everyone. “We were overwhelmed with the amount of

123GO! 2015.indd 44

children who came down over Easter and hope to build the Kids Craft Zone into somewhere parents know they can come along with their children and join in some fun activities.” For more information and to check opening times on our Kids Craft Zone please check our facebook page – facebook.com/ strandshoppingcentre or contact Lucy Kirk at lucy@strand-shopping.co.uk. We are looking forward with excitement and positivity to the changes at The Strand this year as we go into a period of renovation to make The Strand better than ever.

Galloping around in So

Take a closer look at Silcock’s famous carousel

Silcock’s galloper set (carousel) was built in 1901 in the reign of Queen Victoria by Savages of Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

Purchased by Silcock's in 1989, it took three years to restore and made its opening debut at the Shirdley Show at St Helens in July 1990. This 18 ton ride is 13 meters in diameter, 5.5 meters tall and has three Cockerels and 33 Horses, each named after a member of the Silcock family and family friends. The three Cockerels and the Horses on the inside of the ride are the original Anderson

58

carvings and date to when the ride was built in 1901, with the rest of the horses being replaced by copies due to wear and tear. Carousels emerged from early jousting traditions in Europe and the Middle East where knights would gallop in a circle while tossing balls at each other. The word carousel originated from the Italian word ‘garosello’ and Spanish ‘carosella’ meaning ‘little war’. By the early 18th century carousels were being built and operated at various fairs and

gatherings in Europe and England with wooden horses placed on the ride for children . In Europe, ‘Merry Go Rounds’ (gallopers) usually turn clockwise and carousels found in America turn anticlockwise. The gallopers based at the Southport Pier Forecourt, outside Funland family leisure centre, all year round and have appeared in the background of numerous TV shows and advertisements. Silcock’s Funland is open every day (except Christmas Day) all year round.

Crosby’s hidden gem comes to Southport . . . Wingbox has long been a hidden gem saved for the locals, located on Cooks Road, Crosby.

This takeaway come hangout is popular with school children who regularly visit after school for the homemade chocolate bar milkshakes and their famous ‘red salt’ super skinny fries. The obsession with their authentic American buffalo wings spread to adults too. Families enjoy deliveries of wings, boneless wings, fries and sides. Customers looking for a change from the normal fish and chips, Chinese and Indian takeaways love the friendly banter from this family run business along with the exceptional choice on the menu. This includes wings, cooked in local rapeseed oil coated with any of the 14 available flavours – BBQ, Buffalo 911, Sweet Chilli or Teriyaki to name a few.

Needless to say one visit and you will be hooked, this food should come with a warning, the chicken is addictive! Don’t worry if you live a little far north of Crosby. Wingbox is now open in Cable Street, Southport too. They will be offering the same tasty menu of chicken and treats to seaside residents and visitors. Pop in and try a taste on America, we promise you won’t be disappointed. To order, call Crosby on 0151 932 0380 or Southport 01704 532649

Since we started in November of last year we’ve turned Lord Street into our ‘Boulevard of Light’ with half a million new tree lights, filled the town with flowers cascading from hundreds of new hanging baskets and planters. We made Christmas more festive than ever with new lighting features and traditional markets.

We’re looking forward to a great year ahead with bigger and better festivals and activities planned for autumn and winter, including Halloween and Christmas. There’s never been a better time to come and enjoy everything Southport has to offer.
