Welcome to Southport

Southport aims higher with MIA Accreditation Southport is pleased to announce that its conference bureau, Southport Conferences, and all of its venues including the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre, the Ramada Plaza, Vincent Hotel, Scarisbrick Hotel, The Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa, The Prince of Wales Hotel and Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa are now fully accredited by the Meetings Industry Association’s (MIA) conference and meetings industry standard Associated in Meetings, through their high quality level of service delivery in business tourism. The industry-wide benchmark recognises destinations and venues that are operating to a high standard in the provision of conferences and events, both legally and ethically.

We’re delighted that you are here and hope you enjoy your time in Southport. We’ve worked closely with each conference organiser to ensure that every delegate has an enjoyable stay. There is so much to see and do if you

have the time and if not, lots of reasons why you should come back again and again!

Pathways research for summer 2010 stated that 80% of buyers asked were aware of the AIM accreditation and the entire 100% stated that they would be influenced by such an accreditation.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

The resort is proud to be recognised as an emerging destination in the meetings and events industry and will continue to do so with continuing investment and commitment to its business tourism product, which will be reported in future issues of Conference Times.

The Atkinson

a new Centre for Culture in Southport

Moving with the times at the Scarisbrick Hotel The historic Scarisbrick Hotel, situated on Southport’s picturesque Lord Street boulevard, is currently undergoing a series of improvements and upgrades to enable it to continue to meet the demands and expectations of today’s leisure and business visitors. Fifteen of the hotel’s 88 bedrooms have already been earmarked for refurbishment which will be followed by the instigation of a rolling programme of refurbishment for all the hotel’s bedrooms thereafter, along with improvements to the hotel’s public areas.

Southport’s new cultural centre, The Atkinson, will bring together the former Southport Arts Centre, Atkinson Art Gallery and Southport Library, into a new, contemporary multi use centre, comprising three new museum galleries, theatres, extended café and bar facilities, community activity space and event, meeting and conference facilities.

commercial hire as performance, meetings, event and conference space.

The new library will include a state of the art IT suite with internet access, message stations and download points while the main library will hold an improved range of audio and video collections, reference and specialist collections and a diary of reading promotions and events.

Finally, there is community workshop space available, suitable for youth theatre and dance, school use, training and courses, improved gallery storage, a local studies centre holding archives, a genealogy centre, civic history and geography collections, and a craft gallery, showcasing hand made crafts produced locally including ceramics, jewellery, glass, furniture and textiles. The Atkinson is set to be one of Southport’s major tourism and community attractions, not to be missed while you are in town. Check visitsouthport.com for regular updates on opening dates and launch programme.

There will be two theatre spaces with popular music, comedy, contemporary dance and performance art in the Studio, while the Cambridge Theatre will host drama, classical performances, film screenings, comedy and ballet. Both theatres will be available for community and

CON TIMES page 06-07.indd 1

Three new gallery spaces will host major contemporary art exhibitions, artists residencies, historic, scientific and community displays. Watch out for future issues where we will be reporting on the exciting launch events planned for 2013.

In addition to the bedroom improvements, the Scarisbrick’s gym and leisure amenities have also been upgraded, which will ensure that one of

the resort’s favourite hotels will continue to endear itself to business and leisure guests alike for years to come.

New hotel for listed building Work is set to commence later this year on Southport’s iconic Ribble Buildings. The Grade II-listed disused former bus station, located at one of the main gateways to the town centre, is to be developed into a 92-bedroom hotel and restaurant complex. The hotel will be operated by ‘Express by Holiday Inn’ – described as a “modern hotel for value conscious travellers”. A six-storey extension is also to be built along with car parking spaces. Architects for the new hotel are acclaimed firm Falconer Chester Hall, whose portfolio of work includes Liverpool’s Hope Street Hotel.

The contractor Denizen’s developments include West Tower in Aughton and Hilton Double Tree in Chester. Look out for more news on this development in future issues of Conference Times.

Rudolf von Laban was a dance artist and theorist whose work laid the foundations for Laban Movement Analysis and other more specific developments in dance notation. Known as the father of modern European dance, he devised a clear and concise movement language that gives teachers the tools to provide a holistic workout with functional fitness through creative choreography. The KFA Association provides the opportunity to meet in a spirit of fun while exercising together. Through its classes, it has introduced a huge number of people to achieving fitness through movement and dance, becoming as a result more energetic, healthier and happier. Categories in this year’s KFA Championship include movement and dance, exercise, fitness freestyle, apparatus and rope movement & skipping. Most categories are available to enter on a solo, duo or team basis. For more information check out the KFA website www.keepfit.org.uk

Recognition for Excellence

One of Southport’s finest establishments for real ale drinkers, the Barons Bar, has once again appeared in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the eleventh consecutive year. The Barons, situated within the Scarisbrick Hotel, is renowned for its excellent selection of real ale, including ales from Southport’s own brewery. It also regularly stages real ale festivals and is well worth a visit while in town. Southport’s Bistrot Verite in Birkdale Village has appeared in the coveted Good Food Guide for the second time. Restaurants and bistros up and down the country compete for a place in the guide every year, which is voted for by customers and anonymous judges who score eateries out of ten.

Southport has much to see and do during the day but it doesn’t stop there as there’s hot nightspots, loads of pubs, trendy wine bars and traditional cosy pubs dotted throughout the resort. Both Maloney’s and The Wine Cellar, situated right in the middle of town on Lord Street, are consummates of “flair” bartending – sometimes known as extreme or performance bartending - the skilled practice of entertaining by throwing/juggling bar tools, e.g. glassware, shakers and bottles. Immerse yourself in English and Irish culture with a visit to one of Southport’s traditional pubs in and

around the town centre. Nearby Churchtown is home to the Bold Arms, with wooden beams, open fires and a selection of real ales. Prefer something more cutting edge? McGees Bar, situated in the Vincent Hotel on Lord Street has a moving design, ubercool ambience and a chic wine and cocktail list. McGees was named after the internationally acclaimed photographer Tony McGee, whose work adorns the walls of the bar. Finally to round off the evening there’s a selection of buzzing nightclubs around town to take you through to the wee small hours…

The North West and surrounding areas The Wonder of Wirral The Wirral Country Park stretches along the Wirral Peninsula’s coast-line overlooking The River Dee. Thurstaston Visitors Centre itself is a part of the Country Park and is a very popular tourist attraction and family day out in the Wirral. There are numerous leisure activities available at Thurstaston, an open expanse of grass to sit and picnic on, and the Visitors centre itself which houses a refreshment stand, a shop, a nature exhibit and tourism leaflets and information on Thurstaston and the rest of the Wirral Peninsula. Head to Hilbre The Hilbre Islands are designated as Local Nature Reserves and are an important stopping-off point for the twice-yearly migration of birds along the West Coast of Britain. You can also look out for seals on the sand-bank and there is an exhibition in the Lookout. The Islands are cut off from the mainland by the tide for up to five hours out of every twelve and so, before planning a visit to the Islands it is advisable to contact the Wirral Country Park Visitor Centre (after 10am 7 days a week) on 0151 648 4371. There is no charge to visit Hilbre Islands. Festive Foodie Frenzy The Port Sunlight Christmas Food Festival looks set to be everything you would expect from a major food festival, with an added yuletide flavour and a fitting finale to Wirral’s Year of Food. The two day event, on 4 & 5 December will also feature tasting opportunities, chef demonstrations and live seasonal entertainment. For more information go to www.portsunlightchristmasfayre.com Magnificent Malham Malham Cove is just an hours drive from Southport, a natural limestone formation 1 km north of the village of Malham, North Yorkshire, England. On the west side of the 80 metre (260 foot) high curved limestone cliff face are about 400 irregular stone steps: well worth the climb, these form part of the route of the Pennine Way and lead to a fine area of deeply fissured and fretted limestone pavement at the top, together with outstanding views of the area. Malham Cove, along with nearby Gordale Scar, is considered one of natural wonders of Yorkshire and is worth the challenging walk to experience its views. ‘A course of contrast and a hidden beauty amongst the dunes and pines...’ One of the most attractive courses on England’s Golf Coast, Formby Golf Club is aptly regarded as a classic British links course and it is also unique in that within its boundaries lies the completely independent Formby Ladies Golf Club. Situated amongst sandhills and pinewoods 5 miles south of Southport, Formby is a course of contrasts with its opening holes differing markedly from the subsequent holes amongst the sand dunes. On a good day the visitor can see the Welsh mountains to the south west from tees 9 and 10. Formby has hosted many important events including four Amateur Championships (the most recent in 2009), the Home Internationals, the English Amateur, the English Ladies and the Curtis Cup in 2004.

Cycle town

Formby Ladies’ narrow fairways, lined with heather and small greens guarded by well positioned pot bunkers, demand that golfers play with precision rather than rely on brute force. Gentlemen are most welcome to play this hidden gem, and double Open Champion Greg Norman is full of praise for this beautiful course, stating that Formby Ladies “…clearly shows that courses do not need to be 7,000 yards to be formidable.” Even if your scorecard is looking grim, there are spectacular views over the course towards the Irish sea and a splendid contrast to be found, with flat, landward side holes being misleadingly straightforward in appearance while the picturesque, adventurous holes amongst the sand hills and pinewoods pose more obvious physical hazards which need to be avoided. For more information on both of these exquisite courses and England’s Golf Coast, visit englandsgolfcoast.com

Coastal Pursuits

Southport is proud to be a designated Cycling Town and as such aims to encourage more of our visitors and residents to enjoy cycling around the town. To further encourage cycling in the town a high quality cycle network has been developed around the seafront area, together with improved access to the Sefton coast and the development of links to the town centre. Cycles are available to hire across the resort, from the cycle hire centre based at the Eco Centre, Esplanade and the recently opened second centre based at Southport Railway Station, London Street which has been set up in partnership with Merseyrail. This centre also includes secure cycle parking. Cycles can be hired for £6.00 per day and £4.00 for up to 4 hours. Use of helmets, security locks, lights and other accessories are also included in the cost. Various other accessories are also available for hire. Or if you are staying in one of Southport’s hotels, several are involved in the cycle hire scheme and guests staying at those hotels are able to hire bikes direct from the hotel. Ask at reception for details or check www.southportcycletown.gov.uk

Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, located in Crosby Coastal Park, just 30 minutes from Southport, is the North West’s newest and most accessible Water Sports and Visitors Centre. The £10 million state of the art centre offers something for everyone, from Water sports, fitness suite, conference and banqueting to overnight accommodation, Crosby Lakeside has something for everyone plus a fantastic Lakeside Bistro & Bar.
