squirrels feeding in the tree tops. The reds spend much time daily, feeding on natural foods like pine cones which are much better for them than peanuts on the ground! Grey squirrels appear in the neighbouring residential areas each year and the National Trust is keen not to attract greys into the red squirrels woodland stronghold. For this reason, feeding of nuts and other food supplements to the red squirrels is no longer permitted. Southport has a long and proud history of welcoming Rotary District conferences and this season is no exception, with Rotary Districts 1070 and 1190 returning throughout the winter months together with Rotary District 1020, visiting us from north of the border! This is the first time we have welcomed a Rotary District from Scotland as the Scottish districts have in the past held their events on home turf. However, when District Governor Keith Best came to organising his Conference, he was told by a fellow Rotarian “don’t book until you’ve looked at Southport!” Keith said “The conference facilities are superb and the hotels have upgraded to make Southport a true Conference Town. We have experienced a city venue, a river town, a highland town and the seaside this year is an added attraction. Most importantly there are good travel communications and when you arrive all walking is on the level. There is just so much at Southport. “

Club Focus: Formby

Hall Golf Resort & Spa

Set amongst 200 acres of parkland, Formby Hall is now firmly established as one of the finest golf resorts and luxury spa hotels in the North West of England. The challenging 72-par Old Course boasts an excellent pedigree and is an established venue on the European Challenge Tour, while the 9-hole par three course has been described as the best in the UK. Signature Hole – Little Venice – Hole 16 – Par 3 – 187 Yards An accurate tee shot is required here so club selection is key. This picturesque yet extremely testing par 3, with its 170 yard carry over water, and 6 well placed greenside bunkers waiting to catch any errant tee shot leaves very little margin for error, and a Par 3 on the card is true reward for selecting the right club. The prevailing wind is generally straight back towards the tee, adding to the difficulty. Spa fans will find all the usual facilities including immaculate treatment rooms, fitted out to the highest standards imaginable, together with an extensive range of treatments and holistic therapies for both men and women.
