The first ever National Care Home Open Day (NCHOD) in 2013 was a huge success, so they decided to do it again! For some time now the care home sector has been marred by the negative press associated with a small number of badly run homes. One bad report or TV program about one poorly run home affects the public consciousness deeply and NCHOD is determined to show people what care homes are really about. Their aim is to enrich the lives of the UK’s care home residents by reminding people that the care homes in every community are filled with unique, intelligent and charming characters, and run by special people who really do care. June 20th 2014 will see UK care homes organising events, activities and welcoming the public to help in creating connections between care home residents and their local communities.
Together we can all help in building friendships, to change long-held perceptions and to have a wonderful day that will enrich lives. Journalist and broadcaster, Gloria Hunniford, is a great supporter of issues concerning older people. She has been announced as the ambassador of National Care Home Open Day. Gloria’s aim is to raise the profile of the event to encourage people from across the country to visit their local care home on the 20 June 2014. As part of her appointment to NCHOD Gloria plans to challenge MPs to visit as many care homes in their constituency as possible. There are a number of legislations to which care homes must adhere to, including registration and inspection, buildings management, human resources and standards of care. There are many publications, web links, and organisations which can provide information, support and guidance relating to the management and operation of care homes.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health care and adult social care services in England. It is responsible for maintaining standards in health and adult social care in England. All care homes are types of service providers required to be registered with the CQC. A booklet outlining the National Minimum Standards Care Homes Regulations can be obtained from The CQC or by contacting your local Department of Health. If you do not already have a home in mind and are not sure of how to find one, these points may help: • The (CQC) provides details of registered care homes in every area.

You can also see copies of their inspection reports for homes you are interested in on their website • Social workers at your local authority social services department or the hospital may also be able to provide a list of homes • Telephone directories will contain addresses of homes • There are an increasing number of independent websites aimed at assisting people to find care homes and other services, it is always advisable to check the ‘About us’ section on these sites to find out who they may be tied to or owned by in terms of the actual independence of their information.
Care homes can be owned and run by local councils, private companies or voluntary organisations. Private care homes are run for profit by private organisations and individual proprietors. Voluntary homes are non profit making and run by registered charities, religious organisations and housing associations, sometimes for particular groups of people. Both types of home can choose to whom they offer accommodation. Some care homes are run by the social services department of the local authority.

Each home should produce a statement of purpose, setting out its aims and objectives, the range of facilities and services it offers to its residents and the terms and conditions on which it does so in its contract of occupancy. This should be made available to prospective residents along with copies of the home’s most recent CQC inspection reports. If you can’t find a care home that provides the sort of care you need, ask your local council to help. It has a responsibility to find a suitable home for anyone it has assessed as needing a care home place.

The main sources of support are the NHS and your local social services department but, depending on your circumstances, help may also be available from charitable organisations such as the Family Fund for example. CARER SOLUTIONS If you are a carer yourself there are ways of ensuring that you can get valuable assistance in what you do. Care workers can also be known as care attendants or personal assistants. Home help can provide services such as Domiciliary care for the person you’re looking after. This includes help with getting up and going to bed, bathing, dressing, meals and medication and help with shopping. Sitting with the person you’re looking after to allow you to have a break. Helping the person you’re looking after to go to the cinema, pub, shopping or to enjoy any other community activity. Practical tasks around the home such as cleaning and cooking. Being a carer or becoming one can be daunting, not least physically. If, for example, you are required to physically lift someone you must ensure that you can do so safely. Your local authority has a responsibility to consider your needs as a carer and the needs of the person you care for. Simply contact your local authority and ask for a community care assessment for the person you look after, as well as a carer’s assessment to help you. For advice and guidance on moving and handling, ask for an occupational therapy assessment. You may be given free specialist equipment to help you, such as hoists,

As well as the practical emotional support that you require as a carer, you may also advice on a subject that people

The Best of Both Worlds One of the best decisions I have ever made was to move into Gadsby House, Alexandra road. I have kept my independence, but at the same time, I live in comfortable, friendly, secure environment, where my privacy is respected, but help is there when I need it. I am near to Lord St, shops, buses, library, theatres an all amenities the town has to offer, and having my own front door key I can come and go as I please. I even have garage space for my scooter!
Companionship and community Our sheltered houses have been run for 40 years by local staff and volunteers who genuinely care, and share our aim to help older people enjoy a full and purposeful life in the community. We understand how important freedom and independence are, but we are always there for reassurance and extra help if required
I can retire to my own rooms, surrounded by my own furniture and possessions, where I can pursue my hobbies or just enjoy some “peace and quiet�. My friends can visit whenever they wish. I have no worries about bills coming in as everything is included in the monthly rent, including two excellent meals in the dining room each day. You see what I mean the best of both worlds! (DLF) has a handy tool that will help you compile a list of your requirements. According to the DLF, social care services can offer financial support to give you more freedom of movement around your home and provide essential facilities within it. Can I live independently in provided accommodation? Living in accommodation provided by an external organisation doesn't necessarily mean the end of independent life. There are various housing types available to you if you have special needs. Supported or sheltered housing enables people to live independently but with extra daily support. You can apply for sheltered housing through GOV.UK. Care homes offer a level of support that can't be provided in your own home. Some offer full-time nursing care, while others support people with a specific disability or medical need.
What financial help can I get to help me live independently? "Financial help will depend on your needs," says Gross. This financial help is intended to help you pay for your rent, equipment, house improvements or essential adaptations. You can get money directly from social services to arrange the social care that you're entitled to through the direct payment scheme, instead of letting social services arrange it for you. Around one in five adults in the UK is disabled, and more than one million of those live alone. With the right support and facilities, leading an independent life with a physical or learning disability is now more achievable than ever. Living independently doesn't mean that you're not entitled to support from social services, and it doesn't mean that family and friends aren't important. Wendy Gross of the National Centre for Independent Living, an organisation that helps disabled people live independently, says: "Even though you want to live independently, it's still important to have support from friends and family nearby in cases of emergency, and also for company." What will I need in my home? If you're going to live independently, a suitable home is the single most important step. Ask yourself: is your home adequate for your needs, or will it need adjustments before you can live in it? "The social services department of your local council will conduct a health and social care assessment to establish your specific needs," says Gross. Making a Will
Everyone agrees that writing a will is one of the most important things you will ever do. However, advice differs on the best way to do it. Simple DIY efforts are cheap but can be sorely lacking and the best, surest way is using the services of a solicitor. First of all, you will be protected if something goes wrong. Solicitors are regulated. You can make complaints if anything goes awry, to the solicitor’s firm and then to the Legal Ombudsman if you are not getting anywhere. You are reassured that all is done properly. Silly but common problems with wills, like using the wrong witnesses or forgetting to have it signed, could mean it’s useless when you die.
