Visit a local care home

Do YOU have a decision to make? on to make?

The first ever National Care Home Open Day (NCHOD) in 2013 was a huge success, so they decided to do it again! For some time now the care home sector has been marred by the negative press associated with a small number of badly run homes. One bad report or TV program about one poorly run home affects the public consciousness deeply and NCHOD is determined to show people what care homes are really about. Their aim is to enrich the lives of the UK’s care home residents by reminding people that the care homes in every community are filled with unique, intelligent and charming characters, and run by special people who really do care. June 20th 2014 will see UK care homes organising events, activities and welcoming the public to help in creating connections between care home residents and their local communities.

Together we can all help in building friendships, to change long-held perceptions and to have a wonderful day that will enrich lives.

Journalist and broadcaster, Gloria Hunniford, is a great supporter of issues concerning older people. She has been announced as the ambassador of National Care Home Open Day. Gloria’s aim is to raise the profile of the event to encourage people from across the country to visit their local care home on the 20 June 2014. As part of her appointment to NCHOD Gloria plans to challenge MPs to visit as many care homes in their constituency as possible. Go to their bright and breezy website www.nationalcarehomeopenday.org. uk for more information and find a home near you that you may want to visit to see what the reality of UK Care homes is really about.

There are a number of legislations to which care homes must adhere to, including registration and inspection, buildings management, human resources and standards of care. There are many publications, web links, and organisations which can provide information, support and guidance relating to the management and operation of care homes.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health care and adult social care services in England. It is responsible for maintaining standards in health and adult social care in England. All care homes are types of service providers required to be registered with the CQC. A booklet outlining the National Minimum Standards Care Homes Regulations can be obtained from The CQC or by contacting your local Department of Health. If you do not already have a home in mind and are not sure of how to find one, these points may help: • The (CQC) provides details of registered care homes in every area.

Care home guidelines

You can also see copies of their inspection reports for homes you are interested in on their website • Social workers at your local authority social services department or the hospital may also be able to provide a list of homes • Telephone directories will contain addresses of homes • There are an increasing number of independent websites aimed at assisting people to find care homes and other services, it is always advisable to check the ‘About us’ section on these sites to find out who they may be tied to or owned by in terms of the actual independence of their information.

Care homes can be owned and run by local councils, private companies or voluntary organisations.

Private care homes are run for profit by private organisations and individual proprietors.

Voluntary homes are non profit making and run by registered charities, religious organisations and housing associations, sometimes for particular groups of people. Both types of home can choose to whom they offer accommodation. Some care homes are run by the social services department of the local authority.

Each home should produce a statement of purpose, setting out its aims and objectives, the range of facilities and services it offers to its residents and the terms and conditions on which it does so in its contract of occupancy. This should be made available to prospective residents along with copies of the home’s most recent CQC inspection reports. If you can’t find a care home that provides the sort of care you need, ask your local council to help. It has a responsibility to find a suitable home for anyone it has assessed as needing a care home place.

...Do you need a little extra help?

CARER SOLUTIONS If you are a carer yourself there are ways of ensuring that you can get valuable assistance in what you do. Care workers can also be known as care attendants or personal assistants. Home help can provide services such as Domiciliary care for the person you’re looking after. This includes help with getting up and going to bed, bathing, dressing, meals and medication and help with shopping. Sitting with the person you’re looking after to allow you to have a break. Helping the person you’re looking after to go to the cinema, pub, shopping or to enjoy any other community activity. Practical tasks around the home such as cleaning and cooking. Being a carer or becoming one can be daunting, not least physically. If, for example, you are required to physically lift someone you must ensure that you can do so safely. Your local authority has a responsibility to consider your needs as a carer and the needs of the person you care for. Simply contact your local authority and ask for a community care assessment for the person you look after, as well as a carer’s assessment to help you. For advice and guidance on moving and handling, ask for an occupational therapy assessment. You may be given free specialist equipment to help you, such as hoists,

stand aids, transfer boards or slide sheets. You may also be able to find free training courses, which will teach you safe handling methods. BUDGET You may worry at how to fund any of the above solutions but there is help available there too. The main sources of support are the NHS and your local social services department but, depending on your circumstances, help may also be available from charitable organisations such as the Family Fund for example. Your GP should be able to guide you through the maze of available support and he or she should be your first step. ASSESSMENTS An assessment will be arranged in most cases to ascertain what level of financial help can be obtained and also what level of aid you will need. Check with your GP or local authority. Don’t assume you will not be helped, especially if you are to become a carer.

Helping the carer

Caring for an another person who may be ill, elderly or disabled, a relative or a friend, without the right support can sometimes prove difficult but it can also be a rewarding experience.

Not all carers are trained professionals, many are just caring for someone they love. If you’re a carer, there are many organisations that can provide practical and financial help, as well as short breaks from caring.

Most carers have a legal right to an assessment of their own needs.

Take this opportunity to discuss with the social services department of your local authority any help you may need. You can ask for any help that would assist in maintaining your own health and balance caring with other aspects of your life, such as work and family. Social services then use the assessment to decide what help to provide. Below are a number of ways that you can take a break from your caring role and this is something that you can also discuss with a social worker or care manager, they may also be able to suggest other ways that might suit you better:

FOCUS ON CARE & INDEPENDENT LIVING

Living independently

Around one in five adults in the UK is disabled, and more than one million of those live alone. With the right support and facilities, leading an independent life with a physical or learning disability is now more achievable than ever. Living independently doesn't mean that you're not entitled to support from social services, and it doesn't mean that family and friends aren't important. Wendy Gross of the National Centre for Independent Living, an organisation that helps disabled people live independently, says: "Even though you want to live independently, it's still important to have support from friends and family nearby in cases of emergency, and also for company." What will I need in my home? If you're going to live independently, a suitable home is the single most important step. Ask yourself: is your home adequate for your needs, or will it need adjustments before you can live in it? "The social services department of your local council will conduct a health and social care assessment to establish your specific needs," says Gross. This could include an assessment by an occupational therapist to instruct on the various types of equipment you need. The Disabled Living Foundation

(DLF) has a handy tool that will help you compile a list of your requirements.

The DLF also offers advice on how to choose the equipment that's right for you. www.dlf.org.uk Once I know what I need, how can I adapt my house?

According to the DLF, social care services can offer financial support to give you more freedom of movement around your home and provide essential facilities within it. This may include:

• widening doors and installing ramps

• providing or improving access to rooms and facilities – for example, by installing a stairlift or providing a downstairs bathroom

"Financial help will depend on your needs," says Gross. This financial help is intended to help you pay for your rent, equipment, house improvements or essential adaptations. You can get money directly from social services to arrange the social care that you're entitled to through the direct payment scheme, instead of letting social services arrange it for you. This gives you more control over the care you receive. Find out more on GOV.UK about financial help if you're disabled. How can I arrange a health and social care assessment?

You can find more information and arrange a health and social care assessment from your local social services through GOV.UK.

• improving access to and movement around the home to enable you to care for another person who lives in the property, such as a child

A home improvement agency (HIA) will also give you free advice about what work needs to be done, and can even recommend builders that can carry out the adjustments.

FOCUS ON CARE & INDEPENDENT LIVING

Independent living something we all want

The longer anyone can live independently, the happier the person will remain. However, sometimes, help will be needed to continue living well and without problems. STAY AT HOME

We have explored some of the help offered in our HELP AT HOME Section and though for most this is, by far, the most preferred solution it is important to have other possibilities to fall back on, if needed. ADAPTING YOUR HOME

If you are a carer, you may be entitled to some help to adapt your home to the needs of the person you will be caring for. These changes can be vital for both carer and charge. Grants and financial help may be available to you and your local authority will guide you through what you need to do. RETIREMENT HOMES

In the past, couples where one of the partners developed memory loss had no alternative but to separate. Today,

thankfully there are many resources to avoid heartbreaking decision such as a forced separation, enabling people to still be together, fully helped by care teams. And if you live on your own or together, there are other solutions, offering not only care but friendships, activities and general looking after in a hotel-like environment. A care home which is registered to provide personal care will offer support, ensuring that basic personal needs, such as meals, bathing, going to the toilet and medication, are taken care of. Some residents may need medical care and some care homes are registered to provide this. These are often referred to as nursing homes. Some homes specialise in certain types of disability, for example, dementia.

Sefton New Directions employs over 300 dedicated, enthusiastic and caring staff working across a wide range of services, meeting the needs of several thousand people across Sefton Borough and beyond. We are key partners to a number of Commissioners. New Directions staff support people to get the best out of life; our record of exemplary service is reflected by the Care Quality Commission in their inspection reports which can be viewed at www.cqc.org.uk. Our commitment to providing personalised services means that we deliver care where and when it’s needed – and we work with commissioners to transform and improve services to ensure that we continue to provide the support that people want. Our plans for our future focus on creating further life enriching opportunities for people including, for example, meeting vocational and employment needs through appropriate training and dedicated support. WHAT SATISFIED CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR SEFTON NEW DIRECTIONS EXPERIENCES: “I would like to thank all the carers who’ve been so kind to me since I came out of hospital. They have encouraged me and made me feel that I’m really improving. They have been pleasant and it’s been a pleasure to know them. I think you are invaluable and I’m very grateful to you all.” “I can leave my son…knowing he is well looked after. I have total respect and a very high regard for the members of staff. ”

Making a Will

Everyone agrees that writing a will is one of the most important things you will ever do. However, advice differs on the best way to do it. Simple DIY efforts are cheap but can be sorely lacking and the best, surest way is using the services of a solicitor. First of all, you will be protected if something goes wrong. Solicitors are regulated. You can make complaints if anything goes awry, to the solicitor’s firm and then to the Legal Ombudsman if you are not getting anywhere. You are reassured that all is done properly. Silly but common problems with wills, like using the wrong witnesses or forgetting to have it signed, could mean it’s useless when you die. Don’t leave it to chance. The law surrounding inheritances

(including Inheritance Tax and trusts) is complicated – solicitors will be familiar with the law and will be able to help you make the most effective choices. If a solicitor helps you write your will, they’ll usually store the original for you in a fireproof safe free of charge. THE COST

A will may cost between £200 to £400, sometimes rising to £600 if your affairs are more complex. See it as an investment for your inheritors. Your solicitor is your best bet. They will give you advice and draw your will as it should be. If you prefer, a solicitor can also become executor. Whatever your age, make your will as soon as you can.

Final arrangements

When you lose someone, however prepared you may think you are, the reality is that you feel helpless and generally unable to think straight for a while.

A funeral director will help and it pays to choose a firm as soon as possible. Furthermore with so many prepaid funeral plans available, the earlier you decide on what you want, the easier it will be on your relatives. Because a funeral director’s responsibility is to ensure that a funeral meets the wishes of the family, he or she will ensure that the funeral is appropriate, dignified and carried out in a professional manner.

In short a good funeral director will ensure the funeral is handled with total dignity and make it an occasion to fulfil the last wishes of the person who died. PREPAID FUNERAL PLANS There are many variations available with prepaid plans. A reputable funeral director will guide you through your best options and reassure you that you are making the right decision.
