With a famous facade designed by Pugin and magnificent grounds of 56 acres, you could be forgiven for thinking that Scarisbrick Hall School was a traditional institution. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We don’t rest on our laurels - as well as earning the best GCSE results in West Lancashire, we’re dedicated to offering the best for our pupils and that means state of the art equipment and new ways of learning…

Gr8life is changing! As with many things in life, sometimes changes are inevitable and I would like to introduce to you what the new format will highlight in this issue and forthcoming ones. We are very lucky to have fantastic villages and towns locally and from now on each issue will carry a report of an area near you, highlighting some of these amazing places. Even if you think you know a place very well, I truly hope to have exciting interviews, features and facts to help you discover all that is great in our region. We start with an in depth look at Birkdale and its high street. Birkdale is a unique village where everyone embraces a traditional shopping culture and where independent shops have not just managed to survive but are thriving, even in the face of a deep recession and the supermarket age. And

During her years on tour and pantomime Jane has made costumes for some very well known performers including Frank Bruno and David Essex, Jane McDonald, Lionel Blair, Alvin Stardust and Eastenders star Shane Richie. “There have been so many great moments during my career, I’ve been really lucky as I’ve always been able to work doing something I enjoy. Being able to travel and do something I love has been fantastic, meeting interesting people and being given the opportunity to create costumes has been wonderful.” Although Jane is aware that her career allows her to do many things others wouldn’t, she admits that it is not easy. “There is a lot of hard work involved especially in touring theatre and it’s really not the glamorous life people imagine but it is tremendous fun and can be very rewarding. Probably the highlight of my touring career was the opportunity to travel abroad especially Las Vegas with Simply Ballroom.” Jane adds, “Since I started my business ‘Vivid,’ the highlight was definitely the first time two of my costumes were worn for the Amateur Latin competition at the closed British Championship in Blackpool. 10

beautiful dresses on the floor at that competition and that gave me the confidence to continue in what is a pretty competitive occupation.” But how does Jane stand out among so many other designers? “I think the nature of ballroom dancing requires that costumes are beautiful and magical. There are many talented and successful costume makers and the dancers will find the one that suits their own individual style and run with that. Customers pay a lot of money for their costumes and should be completely satisfied with them. “All dressmakers have a regular and loyal clientele. I feel I am able to offer a very personal service and my customers know that I personally make every dress, shirt and pair of trousers that are ordered from me. “The larger companies have to rely on several workers completing different stages of each costume as they work on a much larger scale.” Since starting I have also made ladies ballroom costumes, wedding dresses and a few freestyle costumes, although the emphasis is definitely on the Latin American competition wear.” Gr8 Life magazine

A report suggests that only a small percentage of youngsters will follow their childhood dream job. Teacher, footballer and pop star are all future occupations of today’s seven year olds (according to them). Rebecca Keegan reminisces on her adolescent dream. I’m sure you can remember the day you decided what you wanted to be when you grew up - like me you were probably six or seven, when all of a sudden you had a flash of inspiration and knew, that no matter what, your future was decided. I decided I wanted to be an ice cream man being female wasn’t going to stand in my way, and I would sell ice creams all day and live in my van happily ever after. Needles to say that didn’t happen, but I can clearly remember being so sure that it would. A friend of mine at school said she was going to be a dancer and she was going to be in a West End show one day - she can currently be seen in Sister Act The Musical at the London Palladium, proving not all childhood dreams are pie in the sky. When a conversation began in the Gr8 Life office about what the team of journalist wanted to be when they grew up, responses ranged from journalist (well done to those people) right up to the more obscure dream of being a train driver. It was recently reported that only 11% of people achieve their dream job. Today, popular dream jobs amongst youngsters are to be a doctor, nurse or veterinarian, although with recent celebrity fever there are a few who simply Mike McComb dreamt of being a mechanic - now he owns a fleet of luxury cars Gr8 Life magazine

How would you like to throw a fabulous party for all your family and friends, without any of the stress? That is exactly what Clare Norris aims to achieve with her business ‘The Organiser.’ Louisa Austin visits her to find out how she can help even the most seasoned of hosts.

Whether it be a christening, dinner party or birthday party Clare’s venture involves her coordinating an event so the host can enjoy and relax without worrying about the food, drink and being a perfect host. However, she does point out, “I am not an event coordinator and I by no means want to take over the planning. I just want to take the pressure off the host so they can enjoy themselves. I can do as little or as much as is wanted. All they have to do is tell me.” Gr8 Life magazine

Clare has been in hospitality and catering all her life with her parents owning and running hotels during her childhood. She then went on and studied hospitality, food safety and event management and has been the curriculum leader for Hospitality and Catering at Southport College for several years until she decided to follow her dream of running her own business. “I cater for a huge range of people. I have done a first birthday party but also drinks parties for older people. My clients range from one to 81!” Clare, who lives in Southport, decided to start up her own business ‘purely by chance’ after she was recommended by a friend to help with a christening party. Clare says: “As a result of this, I thought with the skills I have and the passion for perfection, customer service and always doing everything to the best of my ability I would do this as a more permanent venture. 18

Julian Macdonald

Put away your winter woolies and get ready for the most glamorous winter fashion yet. Stephanie O’Connor scours the catwalks and discovers what is on offer this season. Winter is here and the battle of the designers at Debenhams has broken out to bring you the most fabulous looks, and this season girls, its all about the glamour. We have picked out a few statement pieces which your wardrobe cannot be without. At a glance the new trends may look slightly intimidating, but individual pieces are very John Rocha

Gr8 Life magazine

wearable and will have you using the high street as your very own catwalk. 21

17/11/2010 12:27

There are more fabrics available than previous Winter seasons, so there is no reason not to be more daring and try new textures rather than the conventional ‘winter wool’. Faux fur is an ‘old Hollywood’ favourite and forever a frontrunner in the fashion stakes. John Rocha has the perfect example to keep you warm and on trend, while Julian McDonald has introduced some statement pieces which will update your look and make you feel ultra glamorous. Every woman knows (and loves) that winter is the season where your wardrobe can hide a multitude of sins, and as usual chunky knits, are going to be huge this season, scarves and jumpers. But this season, designers have turned their focus on the silhouette. Instead of hiding away the body you have worked hard for all summer under layers and layers, experts say the key to Betty Jackson

22

this season is keep it stylish and snug.

You may sigh as you put away your favourite summer maxi dress, but designers have introduced a winter version with long cosy maxi jumpers, and the jumper dress by John Rocha in grey would be perfect with a pair of flat boots and a chunky scarf. Black is the new black (again) this season but also gracing the catwalks this season is white, so release your inner Snow Queen and do not forget you can inject colour into an outfit with a bright coloured lipstick or a colourful scarf. If you are fed up with black altogether, then brown is a classic alternative as Jasper Conran demonstrates with his trendy brown tights and silk dress. Leather is no longer the uniform of the dominatrix and will be hard to escape this season. From beautifully tailored jackets to trousers and skirts, there is a leather look for every woman and can give a very sensuous feel good factor while looking elegant. The leather coat by John Rocha is a perfect example of the sophisticated rework leather has undergone. Another Autumn staple that has been given a revamp is the classic Trench coat. John Rocha

Florist to the famous

T

ucked away from view in The Mews, a small area of shops behind Liverpool Road in Birkdale, is a little florist’s workshop. It belongs to David Beckham-Doyle who,

although a florist by trade, could easily be classed as a PR guru and event planner to the stars. Here David tells Gr8life about his amazing career. Gr8life: Have you always wanted to be a florist? David: I never really planned to be doing this kind of work, my life just led me in this direction. I was always interested in creative things such as art and fashion, theatre and dance. I think this is why people come to me to design their decor for events as I approach them from a different angle to others. Gr8life: How did it all start for you? David: I was lucky to be taken under the wing of some very talented floral designers and florists who taught me all the rules and basic mechanics of their craft and then encouraged me to experiment and create my own style. I was definitely blessed that they were so forward thinking and experimental – definitely ahead of their time! I was also privileged to work freelance for a couple of high profile event decorators/florists who also had a more theatrical vision in the use of flowers and they inspired me to set myself apart from the more traditional florist shop image.

The truth about

Vérité

B

istrot Vérité is popular, that much is true. Planning to eat there is not an option as it can take days, sometimes weeks, to get a table at the time of your choice. In a few

months, Bistrot Vérité has become one of the North West’s best foodie destinations. Gr8life: Was food always important Marc? Marc: Yes definitely. I always wanted to be a chef. My father owned Claude’s Patisserie in Churchtown, so I was introduced to cooking and baking from very early on, but baking was not really for me, I wanted to be a chef right from the start.

For the dream to become a reality, years of hard work followed. Marc trained as a Chef at Southport College then worked away in London and other places. After meeting his wife Michaela they both travelled to Belgium for a year and finally came back to their roots. Marc then started to make his name as Head Chef at The Warehouse Restaurant. Gr8life: From The Warehouse to your own restaurant must have been a difficult decision?

A new restaurant is probably the most difficult business to launch. A reputation can take months, even years to build up and overnight sensations simply do not exist. The couple who have bucked this trend are Marc and Michaela Vérité who, after opening Bistrot Vérité in Birkdale, have had an amazing few months. Gr8life finds out the secret of their success. Gr8 Life magazine

birkdale.indd 37

Marc: Yes it was. I had been working for 13 years at The Warehouse but running our own restaurant was our ultimate dream. There came a time where we both knew, that at 39 it was time to either try, or live with regrets. With three children, the gamble was high but Paul Adams, the owner of The Warehouse was supportive and understood we had to do this. Birkdale was the town that they both knew as perfect for their new venture but luck played its part in finding the premises that would become Bistrot Vérité. 37

Marc believes that keeping ‘it’ local is paramount in its continued success. By controlling all aspects and cooking every service, he knows that quality is purely down to him. GR8LIFE: What is a Vérité day like? MARC: I always come early about half past eight in the morning and once lunch time is over I try to have a rest upstairs. Then I start again from about half past four in the afternoon and we lock up at

RECIPE

Vérité at home I am thrilled to introduce Vérité at home, a series of some of my favourite recipes that readers will discover in the next few issues of Gr8life. around 11pm. This business is real teamwork though because Michaela does all the paperwork and accountancy that I cannot get my head around! We both do what we are good at, I think it works well for us. The success of the Bistrot also means that Marc and Michaela employ 12 people. Three chefs and an apprentice in the kitchen as well as waiting staff means the restaurant is fully functional. Part of Bistrot Vérité’s success is indeed a very personal approach to service. GR8LIFE: What is the future holding for Marc and Michaela? MARC: I would be really happy to have everything carry on as now. If you can do something you really love and it is appreciated, then why change anything? People keep telling me to expand and go bigger but I can’t see that’s for us. The business exceeded all our expectations and we cannot believe how far we have gone from the day we opened. Marc and Michaela Vérité are the perfect example of how two people can make a business soar. Their respective talents mean that the Bistrot remains unique and the quality of its food and service consistent and undisputable. GR8LIFE: What is the most important thing in your life? MARC: For the both of us, our families are where it stops. When we started this, we wanted success for us and the children. Now, with my Dad retired but coming here to help, as he loves it so much, with the fact thatwe can take a holiday and work together to directly influence our own lives, the dream we had has turned into a reality. A hard working reality but nevertheless Bistrot Vérité has become everything we wanted and more. I just hope it will always be like this for us. Gr8 Life magazine

She would recommend the clinic to anyone.” As well as laser treatments and botox Shuna also offers semi - permanent make up, derma roller treatment, peels and eyelash extensions, among other things. The salons tagline is ‘Ten years younger’ and when you look at the vast array of treatments the clinic provides it is easy to imagine how, like the Hollywood set, it really could be possible to laser, peel and plump your way to youth again.
