With a famous facade designed by Pugin and magnificent grounds of 56 acres, you could be forgiven for thinking that Scarisbrick Hall School was a traditional institution. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We don’t rest on our laurels - as well as earning the best GCSE results in West Lancashire, we’re dedicated to offering the best for our pupils and that means state of the art equipment and new ways of learning‌

g ent Choice. Although we’re surrounded by history and enjoy its benefits, we’re most certainly a forward-thinking 21st century school. For instance, we control our own fleet of vehicles to ensure a personalised dropoff service, we have the latest Apple Mac computers in our IT suite, we are adding new specialist studios for arts and much more. Your children are the ones who will benefit from our policy of constant upgrades. Definitely not old fashioned thinking, we think you’ll agree.

Hello First of all I must thank the many readers of Gr8life for their letters and e mails about our winter issue. You certainly liked the new look Gr8life and it’s great to know! Well, this time we have gone one better with an issue packed with original features and original photographs. It was always my intention to move from national pictures and features and I am so proud to be able to introduce our brand new fashion shoot featuring the gorgeous fashions from Southport’s superb store Virginia Lee as well as a terrific motoring article showing off the Toyota Prius to its best. I must thank Gr8life photographers John Swift and Martyn Snape for their amazing work. But the section that got you talking the most was our new “discover” pages

you to truly discover Churchtown and though many of you will know it, I bet there will be plenty of new things for you to see and businesses to find out about. Gr8life is also the magazine for celebrity interviews and we spoke to Marco Pierre White on your behalf while he was visiting Aughton where his new flagship restaurant The White Swan has reopened. I am sure you will agree he is a fascinating man. But the fun does not stop there and we have our usual mix of fun, elegance and excitement about the fantastic local life that is your Gr8life! I really believe we are lucky to reside in one of the best parts of the United Kingdom and I am sure you will agree that Gr8life emulates that. Because so many of you have expressed the wish of always receiving the magazine we have now ensured you can! You will find details of how to do that for a simple yearly fee on page 60. Golfers from all over the world come to play at Hesketh as club secretary, Neil Annandale tells GR8 Life, “We have golfers coming to Hesketh from America, Greece, Scandinavia, Germany and Holland and the club also holds a Festival Week every year in August, where the course is open to visitors. It is a hugely popular week. In the first few days that bookings were taken for this year’s event, we took £6,000 in entrance fees. It always has a lot of interest.” Hesketh also has strong links with The Open Championship and has been used as an Open qualifying course. The last time The Open was played at Royal Birkdale in 2008, Hesketh held The Junior Open. A total of 112 children from 63 countries played and Padraig Harrington came to present the trophy. This year the Southport course is to hold one of the leading competitions for top amateur golfers as it will stage The Amateur Championship with Hillside Golf Club, from June 13-18. Hesketh Golf Club also has some rather unusual club members who you may catch a glimpse of if you look very closely. It is the most northerly point in the UK for the sand lizard and they can be found in the area around the clubhouse. Every so often experts and conservationists will come and examine the lizard and their habitat, keen to learn more about the species. The golf club grounds are considered extremely

important in

housing the lizards and the club members don’t mind a bit. Gr8 Life magazine

A pedicure with a difference The latest beauty treatment to take the world by storm has come to Crosby. Stephanie O’Connor investigates Following a horrific diving experience in Egypt this summer, where a slimy little fish brushed past my leg, I promised myself not only would I never come in contact with a fish again, I’d give swimming a miss on every future holiday. So when I was asked to try out the new Fish Foot Spa at Hearts Health Club in Crosby, to say I was nervous is an understatement. There is nothing unusual about being hesitant about dipping your toes into a pool of 400 hungry flesh eating fish. As new beauty treatments go, this is definitely a scary one, but after I saw the results I was willing to go for a dip with Jaws. Gr8 Life magazine

Just 15 minutes in the foot spa and your feet really are extremely soft and smooth. “It is fantastic for people with skin conditions, especially eczema and psoriasis. “And it is all very hygienic, the tanks are filtered on an hourly basis. And people shouldn’t be worried about catching skin diseases because you can’t, we wouldn’t let anybody use it if you could, the fish are very clean.” For any more information on the fish treatment please ring Hearts Health Club on 0151 924 0004 or visit www.heartsclub.co.uk.

Any lady who has been to the races in recent years has probably heard of Virginia Lee. Stocked full of glamorous and elegant designer wear it has the perfect outfits for such an occasion. Lee has an eye for fashion and her customers trust her knowledge and ability to guide them to the perfect purchase. Lee, who trained in fashion design in Chester says, “I worked in fashion for years and managed a shop for someone else. I then worked with my husband for ten years but I decided a few years ago I wanted to get back in fashion. It is what I love and enjoy so I set up my own shop.” Lee also only buys very few of each garment which gives her customers the all important exclusivity factor that many are looking for. “I always look for designers with the ‘wow’ factor, I love unusual styles while keeping the glamour,” Lee adds. “I also tend to buy natural fabrics such as wool, silk and cashmere but will also Caroline

try newly created ones such as steel, woven very finely into other fabrics.”

It is not just clothes Lee stocks, many ladies go to see her to have hats and fascinators made especially to match their outfit. She also has leather and man-made handbags, hats, scarves and jewellery. Lee’s jewellery is as spectacular as her clothes and often incorporate Swarovoski crystals which give that extra special feel to them. Lee says, “I sometimes stock the occasional ‘take your breath away’ items which are normally made by an up and coming designer. Prices start at around £29 and there is something to suit most tastes.” Once or twice a year Lee puts on a charity fashion show and has even been known to arrange smaller shows for her clients and friends in their own homes, all part of the service. Lee says, “I love fashion and I love what I do.”

A

s historic as it is picturesque the village of Churchtown goes back so far it has a mention in the famous Domesday book. Tucked away on the northern fringe of Southport it has barely changed in the last few hundred years and still has original thatched cottages and buildings dating back to the 1700’s. What sets Churchtown apart however, is the specialist shops and businesses who all offer something very different. Whether it be a designer hat for the races, perfectly wrapped handmade chocolates or curtains made especially for you, it can all be found here and you can rest assured you are getting the best service possible. Gr8life explores this beautiful historic village and talks to the people that make it special.

ince 1900, when John Andrew Jones began growing in Churchtown, the name J. A. Jones has been synonymous with quality and service. Despite two world wars and numerous recessions, the company has become a leading supplier of Hardy Nursery Stock in the industry. Today, the company specialises in producing over 90,000 trees on 105 acres of Churchtown soil, as well as over 800,000 container grown plants. Richard Kirwan, the sales manager of J. A. Jones Cash and Carry, which is down the road in Banks, joined the Churchtown company after completing a HND in horticulture in 1987. In his 24th year of service, he says has never considered moving. ‘I followed my interest in Horticulture with a Vocational Career. With probably the most comprehensive range of trees and shrubs around, I was able to fulfil my chosen career in J. A. Jones.’ The 6 acre Cash and Carry is open 6 days a week and is always full of seasonal stock and ideas. Richard is proud of ‘his baby’ and with the support of the Churchtown workforce he is confident the company’s future will continue to be inspired by the values on which the company was founded.

even murder mystery activities which are a far more entertaining way of learning than the conventional class based environment. The ongoing goal of adapting education to make it more enjoyable and memorable is typified by the popularity of outdoor classes. As the school is adjoined to the picturesque Botanic Gardens the school can easily make use of the open spaces and greenery and in the summer many classes are taken in this environment. The school also has links with many of the local businesses, whether it is materials for the school from Checkers, local restaurants providing food or, more recently, the Chocolate Shop who helped with a Y5 project on

chocolate! David says, “The pupils have been involved in a number of community activities and these have included strong links with our local churches where children have performed at fairs and also our very popular Christmas services. This year we took part in a second Christmas Tree Service at St Cuthbert’s Church, which again was another highlight of our Christmas programme.” Another impressive aspect of the school are the facilities on offer. The computer room is fully kitted out with the latest technology, as is the music room and allows the children to really express themselves and learn new skills.

“Music is a strength of the school and we are fortunate to have a specialist teacher, Mrs Mandy Roberts, who teaches all children throughout,” says David, enthusiasm written all over his face. He adds, “We feel fortunate that we have received funding at a time when we have been able to improve accommodation and facilities at the school. However good your building is, it is the quality of the teachers and the relationships with their pupils that are vital to its success. To provide our young people with learning opportunities that are relevant, purposeful and rigorous will continue to be key aims of all involved at Churchtown Primary School.”

Norman’s son Gary joined the business after college and over the next few years helped to develop it, overseeing major improvements to the premises. Gary says, “We are lucky today to be involved in a growing retail sector as cycling has become ever more popular. This I think is due to several reasons including the everincreasing cost of fuel which is encouraging people to cycle- commute and the undoubted health benefits that cycling brings.” Gary adds, “There is now a new buzz around cycling, whether it is children riding BMXs or the largest ever membership of the Southport Cycling Club.” Mosscrop Cycles is an all round cycle retailer who can provide for every cycling need from junior cycles, BMXs, mountain bikes to full carbon fibre road bikes. It also has a fully equipped workshop, which provides a full repair service and offers a full range of cycle clothing and accessories. ost of us live such busy lives with very little “me time” so owner Concetta Del Gaudio decided to create a tranquil environment in which her clients can relax and enjoy the calming atmosphere which she continuously strives to achieve. Concetta@Peaches is celebrating its 25th year in business and was previously situated in Southport’s town centre. She moved to Churchtown four years ago and the village provides the perfect setting to compliment the ambience of her salon. Although she has many achievements Concetta believes that in order to be successful we must continue to learn, so she completed a Master colour degree in Milan with Italy’s leading hair product manufacturer Alfaparf. She has been their technical educator for six years and has recently been selected to represent the company in Europe. Concetta also offers a bespoke wedding hair service and is soon to be travelling to Italy to ensure one of her clients achieves her perfect day. Concetta says, “You can see that I am one of those people leading a very hectic life so I fully understand the needs of a busy person! My day, however, is made so much more enjoyable being in such beautiful surroundings.”

NOT FORGETTING... Churchtown is also home to the Botanic Gardens and St Cuthbert’s Church, both which cannot go without a mention. The Botanic Gardens, along with beautiful flower displays, has a greenhouse and aviary which provide visitors with more than enough to do when they visit. For the more inquisitive among you is a garden train which conveys visitors on an interesting tour of the woodland, letting you explore the flower beds and greenery while resting your legs. With a lake running throughout the gardens you can also explore by boat, whether it be a pedalo or rowing boat and take in the picturesque views in at your own pace.

The church is a Grade II listed building built in stone in 1571 and then rebuilt in 1730. This makes it the oldest church and indeed public building in Southport and certainly one of the most attractive. Carvings inside the church are extremely intricate and the stained glass windows tell many different bible stories in fantastic detail. Local manor house and estate Meols Hall has a family crypt at the church and there are even wooden carvings from St Peter’s Church in Liverpool. Stocks, outside the church date back to 1741 and historically held Churchtown residents unlucky enough to have been caught for drunkeness or arguing in public. They are a great deal of interest to tourists and local school children because of the many myths and stories surrounding them and their occupants. 46

Drink to good health Wine is a social drink with an illusive history that dates back in Europe to some 5,000 years before Christ. David Raven visits Aughton Wines in Formby to find out more about one of the most popular tipples of all time.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN Many of us seem to spend our whole lives on a diet, constantly counting calories and striving for that beach perfect figure. Not many of us however actually achieve our goals. Brave Gr8life reporter David Simister agreed to take up the Gr8life challenge of improving his diet and fitness, with the help of nutritionist Amy Dunne, and here tells us how he got on.

how long it takes. I’m not going to lie; losing weight is easier said than done. Nor is it something where you can just stop after a couple of weeks, which is why even as you read these words I’ll still be battling the bulge, determined to get into better shape still in time for summer. Shedding the pounds isn’t easy and you have to stick at it, but even through my own half-hearted attempts I can vouch that you not only feel healthier, you feel better.

I was feeling really good about my progress right up until Christmas, the point when everyone thought I’d drown the entire dieting thing in an ocean of gravy as a seemingly endless series of festive-related feasts on a winter break in Germany conspired to undo all the work I’d done.

I would love to see Marco Pierre White’s chefs create a fish finger sandwich. Somehow I doubt this simplest of delicacies is on the menu at the Swan Inn, in Aughton, but if it did it would involve only the finest ingredients, marinated in mouth watering sauces and then garnished beautifully with seasonings with the sort of attention to detail you’d usually only see in the aviation industry. If a fish finger sandwich is going to get the approval of the TV chef’s team of top chefs, then only the finest will do.

With a pinch of Aughton’s picturesque surroundings, a generous helping of delightful dishes on its menu and a sprinkle of stylish décor thrown in for good measure, only a visit from three-Michelin starred chef Marco Pierre White himself could add extra trimmings to his Swan Inn restaurant. The offbeat celebrity chef, who has become known for his straight talking in celebrity cooking shows like Hell’s Kitchen and Marco’s Kitchen Burnout, seems surprisingly laid back during his latest visit to the eatery, which could have something to do with the warm welcome he received from his local fans that lined up to meet him earlier. “It’s always nice to visit The Swan Inn,” the culinary expert tells Gr8 Life. “It’s a very special place and a happy place, and local people have supported it well.” The restaurant was yet another achievement for the charismatic cook, whose ambition has helped him branch out from being a success in the kitchen at an early age to also becoming a regular on our television screens and churning out a string of popular recipe books. “I just like doing things. I never set out to be the person I’ve become, I was just a young man who set out to get three Michelin stars,” adds Marco, who achieved that ambition long ago. Having carved out his own successful career, Marco also helped pave the way for other talented chefs to make their name.

But these thrills can’t pull you away from what, to my mind, is this car’s biggest problem; the fact that there’s surprisingly little that makes you smile. I admire the Prius hugely and have nothing but respect for its impeccable build quality, its room, its comfy ride and the silence of the hybrid powerplant. It’s also almost certainly a better bet than the rash of electric-only cars, like Nissan’s Leaf, coming later this year, because after 100 miles on a longer trip you’ll still be saving the planet long after the ‘leccy-driving do-gooders have run out of battery power and ground silently to a halt. It’s a hugely impressive car but not a particularly exciting one. It’s not my favourite hybrid - that honour still goes to the CR-Z, which to be fair is a cosy coupé competing in a completely different market - but it comes close by virtue of being the class swot on the technology front. I’d buy the Honda with my heart, but if I had to buy a hybrid with my head the Prius is the one I’d go for. Gr8 Life magazine

RECIPE

Vérité at home NAVARIN A LA PRINTANIERE

(Spring Stew with New Season Vegetables)

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • •

Navarin a la Printanière is traditionally made to welcome the spring and the new crop of vegetables.

1kg lean lamb shoulder 30g butter 1 onion chopped 1 clove garlic crushed 1 tablespoon plain flour 500ml beef or lamb stock Bouquet garni (bay leaves and fresh herbs wrapped together) 18 baby carrots (chantenay carrots will do) 8 large bulb spring onions 200g baby turnips 175g small new potatoes 150g peas fresh or frozen

METHOD 1. Trim the lamb of any fat and sinew and then cut it into bite size pieces. 2. Heat the butter in a large casserole dish over a high heat. 3. Brown the lamb in two or three batches and then remove from the casserole. 4. Add the onion to the casserole and cook stirring occasionally over a moderate heat for three minutes until softened. Do not let the onions colour. 5. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute until aromatic. 6. Return the meat and any juices to the casserole and sprinkle with flour. 7. Stir over a high heat until the liquid is bubbling then gradually stir in the stock. 8. Add the bouquet garni and bring to the boil. 9. Reduce the heat to low, cover and cook for 1 to 1 1/4 hours. 10. Trim the carrots, leaving a little bit of green stalk and do the same with the spring onions and baby turnips. Cut the potatoes in half if they are very large. 11. Add the vegetables to the casserole after 50 mins. 12. Bring to the boil and simmer, covered for 15 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Season with plenty of salt and pepper before serving. Voila! Bon appetit.
