At Beautiful Beginings we aim to provide the future generation with the skills and confidence to help them to grow to their full potential by providing them with a place to learn and have fun. The interior is bright, attractive, clean, warm and welcoming. The furniture and equipment has been carefully chosen to be high quality, safe and age appropriate, allowing children to learn through the freedom of play.
l u b
The outside area has been designed with our ethos ‘childcare in harmony with nature’ in mind and equipped to allow the children the freedom to play safely and securely using a mixture of imagination and physical dexterity.
Our aims for your child are: • To have fun, smile, laugh and be happy • To become confident and independent • To have strong relationships with peers and develop the necessary social skills to do so • To develop a lifelong love for learning • To develop his/her own skills and abilities to maximise potential in all areas • To feel secure and respected within a loving environment and special relationships with adults
We encourage the physical, intellectual, linguistic, emotional and social skills that your child needs to develop their self-esteem and confidence, so that they may become happy, fun loving children with the enthusiasm to learn and make friends, feeling independent and respected.

Hello When I took on the role of editor for Gr8life I could have never imagined how you, our reader, would react to the magazine. With its ‘new look’, Gr8life certainly seems to make an impact and I am so grateful for all your e-mails, letters and messages. It was always my intention that Gr8life would not just be a generic filled glossy magazine, but a window of this amazing part of the world. It certainly seems that most of you agree! Our Discover feature this time centres around Crosby and as I was researching the area I soon realised how much there was to really discover. I am going to be truly honest now and admit that I had no idea what Crosby, Liverpool’s little cousin for so many of us, held in store for the discerning shopper. Crosby is absolutely bursting with little independent businesses and every need is catered for. It is also home to Little Crosby which is a beautiful area that has retained its quaint character. In the Discover section you will meet many of the business owners that make Crosby a thriving bustling village just waiting to be discovered. Summer is a very popular time for weddings so we thought it was only right that we included a section to help you plan and organise that very important date in your life. Within it, you will also find our Gr8life fashion shoot which I am extremely proud of. It is a little different from the norm and features beautiful wedding and mother of the bride outfits, modelled by the lovely Sue and Jean. All clothing can be hired and sometimes bought from local lady Joanne, who has a treasure trove of dresses waiting to be tried on. Looking through her huge collection of beautiful gowns is an experience in itself and Joanne ensures that you will look like a million dollars on your special event at a very reasonable price. Now I have to confess that I love eating out. But often, I worry about provenance and sourcing. I think everyone wonders about what is truly “local”.... Have you ever thought about the use of the world free range by supermarkets for instance? Well trust Gr8life to have discovered a place which can reassure you of EXACTLY how and where your meal comes from. Margaret’s restaurant is tucked away within Homestead Farm in Ormskirk and all their ingredients are sourced from either the farm itself or very nearby. Check out page 55 for our Homestead Farm experience. As well as these highlights we, as always, have a great mix of regional features, all about local people and local places and I hope Gr8life continues to be one of your favourite magazines.

The family run tea room opened in 2004 and has built up a varied menu including one of the families’ first offerings; Stewed Steak topped with Puff Pastry, which has been a constant favourite with visitors ever since. Celebrating the best of local produce the extensive and tasty menu includes a good choice; homemade breakfasts, light snacks, fresh salads, sandwiches, toasties and paninis. A selection of hot meals from roast chicken to individually baked quiches and daily specials including Lancashire hot pot, braised steak & onions, plate minced beef & onion and cheese & onion pies. Sundays at the tea room see traditional Sunday roast lunches being served with fresh vegetables, mashed and roast potatoes, homemade Yorkshire puddings all topped off with a jug of gravy. Hot and cold drinks are available including speciality teas and apple juice.
A real treat can be had by enjoying Afternoon Tea served on a traditional three tier cake stand offering a choice of sandwiches, sultana scones, strawberry preserve and clotted cream, fairy cakes and a pot of tea to finish, or simply tempt your self to a piece of carrot cake, or sample one of the other cakes or slices that are available on display. There is speciality ice cream from Bonds of Elswick of which vanilla through to the more adventurous Sleigh Ride and Rum & Raisin flavours are available. Boasting a traditional ambience and charm that sets it apart from other cafés, visitors can experience the relaxed, friendly and warm welcome they receive whilst browsing over traditional canal ware, jams, marmalades, chutneys and accompaniments that are for sale. Wayne and the staff pride themselves on excellent customer service: “It is a very traditional tea room and we look forward to seeing visitors return again and again”.

at Rufford Old Hall including guided tours and talks around the Great Hall and grounds about the house’s history and what it was used for. The conservation cleaners also chat to visitors and tell them how they clean the house and its contents as this is very specialised.” Chantelle Seaborn, Property Manager for the National Trust’s Central Lancashire Properties says, “Our aim is that everyone visiting appreciates the warm welcome they get at this lovely family home that once belonged to the Hesketh family before it was given to the Trust.” She also explains that there is much more planned for Rufford Hall in the future. “We are working to make Rufford more accessible by providing more information on the website once its relaunched this year and by ensuring that access for disabled people is extended so that we can get wheelchairs onto the ground floor of the house. We are providing more Conservation in Action events for visitors to see and we will be offering companies the opportunity to hire small meeting rooms at Rufford this year, perhaps taking lunch in our beautiful grounds. That is something not many hotels and conference centres can offer!” The house is also fantastic for weddings, due to the grounds making the perfect backdrop for wedding photos and the Great Hall providing an atmospheric venue for civil ceremonies. With it’s hammerbeam ceiling and suits of armour standing watch there is nothing quite like it. The estate also has a shop which offers something slightly different to your normal gift shop. Emma Campagnaro, shop manager says, “There is a lot more focus on sourcing local products and we now stock Trough of Bowland water, a new local supplier providing still and

sparkling water and plans are afoot for trialling some local Lancashire and Cheshire cheeses. We are also looking forward to our first delivery of local herbs in peat free compost at the end of March from Northern Harvest, another local supplier.” David Roberts, gardener in charge, along with his volunteers, maintains, conserves and develops Rufford Old Hall’s grounds and historic garden woods. However,

something to the gardens which has everyone talking. “We have a beehive full of bees that I have been looking after since last May. I am a member of Ormskirk and Croston Bee Keepers association and we are going to set up another beehive before May as this is the month that bees want to swarm.” Emma adds, “We are hoping the bees in our hive will be getting busy and produce enough honey for us to sell in the shop this summer.” Along with the bees David is extending his small veg and herb patch this year and is planning to grow a selection of herbs for the tea room. The gardens also supply the tea rooms with a variety of apples and David adds, “I am also going to plant a main crop of potatoes and so I need to have our scarecrow redressed and ready!” Rufford Old Hall combines history with a Property manager Chantelle Seaborn
working house which is self sufficient in many ways and a fantastic place for families especially to visit. Chantelle says, “We are really focusing on families by reducing our price for family visits and are providing ‘one pot dishes’ for families or groups to share starting at just £9.95. We are also working on a concept plan for our garden to create an improved woodland walk and natural play area for children. It’s fantastic to lose yourself in the garden - tranquillity at its best - and it’s equally lovely when I walk into the courtyard on a hot August day and the children are laughing and running around! I really can’t imagine a better job than this!”

Heaven Sent Beautiful, one of a kind dresses are hard to find, especially when you want to stand out at a wedding. There is nothing worse than walking into the church, only to be greeted by someone in the same outf it as you. Indeed the Royal wedding was a prime example when three ladies turned up in the same coat as one another, all in front of the glare of f lashbulbs!

extremely important as gone are the days of one size fits all. Now there are so many different styles
of photography and albums you need to choose the package best for you. Artistic shots of the brides accessories and her getting ready in the morning are very popular and there is a lot more room now for creative shots rather than the usual traditional shots of twenty and thirty years ago. THERMOGRAPHY THE SAFEST WAY TO DETECT BREAST CANCER AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE STAGE

Giant leaps have been made in the attempt to make breast cancer a disease that only happened in the past. Medical science and technology are advancing at lightning speed making it possible for technicians to develop devices that can detect cancers at the very earliest stages. Medical Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging is one of those advances and it is rapidly becoming the choice of screening for the eco-friendly modern health conscious population all over the world. As knowledge and experience of this revolutionary screening method is being shared by those who have already discovered its advantages, not surprisingly many informed doctors are now singing its praises and recommending it as a safe and accurate method for detecting disease including cancer at its earliest stage. "Every woman should include breast thermography as part of their regular breast health care. An abnormal infrared image is the single most important indicator of high risk for developing breast cancer. Susan M. Lark, MD. Author and leading expert in women's health. "The use of Themography leads to both earlier detection of breast cancer and increases the over all survival of breast cancer patients". Robert Elliot, M.D, ph.D. Comprehensive breast care specialist. It is well documented that Thermography has been shown to detect active breast abnormalities, including cancer years before it is possible by mammography. There are over 800 peer reviewed studies on breast thermography in the Index Medicus. For the first time women have a choice of breast screening. Thermography is not intended to be a replacement for mammography and vice versa mammography cannot replace thermography. They are two very different modes of screening. Mammography is a test of ANATOMY and looks for structural changes. When a tumour has grown to a size that it is big enough to block an x-ray beam, it produces an image that can be seen by the radiologist. The problem is, it has taken years for that tumour to have grown to the stage were it can be detected by mammography. Studies have shown it can take 8-10 years for a tumour to get to the size when it can be detected by mammography. Thermography is a test of PHYSIOLOGY, not structure. Thermography can detect the slightest physiological change in body function by identifying minute changes in heat patterns that occur in the body when conditions are suitable to promote early signs of tumour growth. This process starts years before a tumour is able to be felt physically or detected by mammography.
As our doctors tell us, early detection is the key to the survival of cancer. Investigations show emphatically that thermography is the earliest known indicator for the future development of breast cancer... Why aren't our doctors promoting it! The answer is quite simply they are not knowledgeable about thermography. When patients ask their doctors about thermography as an option for screening, some doctors tell them it is useless as it gives too many false positive readings. This is not the case. Confusion arises when doctors give only half of the information gleaned from a study carried out in the 1970's. The study was the Breast Cancer Detection and Demonstration Project (BCDDP). During the study groups of women were screened with thermography and a percentage of the women were found to have a positive thermographic reading. The same women were then sent for a mammogram which could not identify any abnormality in the group of women. Because of these findings it was claimed by the supporters of mammography that thermography was giving out false positive readings and causing unnecessary anxiety to women. The report was published and thermography was lambasted by those opposing thermography. Unfortunately that is the story some doctors and groups like Cancer Action give when asked about thermography. What they don't know or choose to ignore is that when a long term follow up study was carried out years later, it was found that all the women with positive readings highlighted in the initial study, had all developed breast cancer in exactly the same area that thermography had shown years earlier. Thermography's only error is that it is too ACCURATE too EARLY! Thermography offers a non contact screening service ( no clamping of breasts), which is 100% safe & suitable for all age groups including disabled women who may find mammograms distressing & women with implants & mastectomies. Informed women all over the world including the UK are choosing thermography as their breast screening choice. Many experts & doctors worldwide are saying that it is unethical to subject healthy women to ionising radiation used in mammography for screening purposes. The Lancet, medical journal published a study by Peter Gotzsche and Ole Olsen which stated " There is no reliable evidence that mammography screening decreases breast cancer mortality" It is now estimated that one in eight women will get breast cancer. This frightening statistic is proof that using only mammography for early detection is woefully inadequate. Finding cancer when you have it is by no means early detection. Thermography also offers a safe, accurate and valuable screening procedure for those millions of women between the ages of 20 and 50 years of age who are not included in the NHS breast screening program. Sadly breast cancer affects 1,000's of women in this age bracket. Thermography gives a wonderful & exciting opportunity to change the incidents of this horrible disease. Instead of waiting until 50 if we started screening young women from age 20 onwards using these revolutionary screening cameras, we could detect breast cancer at its earliest stage. If we placed women with high risk readings into appropriate lifestyle modifications & treatment models, we may be able to prevent or minimise not only breast cancer but all breast disease. As we know prevention is better than cure!
We look forward to meeting you.

Three of the four partners at the firm. (L-R) David Lunn, Paul Clegg and Michael Prendergast
In these days of endless regulations and laws even the simplest things can appear very complicated.
Ask people what is one of the most stressful things they have been through and you can be sure that moving house or divorce will top the list. Sometimes we just need some advice and pointing in the right direction and Dickinson Parker Hill solicitors can do just that.
This family run firm of solicitors, based in Ormskirk, is over 200 years old and has a loyal client base going back many years. Michael Prendergast, Private Client partner says, “The firm was originally founded as a family firm and it is only within the last 10 years that the last member of the Hill family retired. We are the oldest firm of solicitors in the area and we think this is testament to the quality of service and advice we give to all our clients.” He added, “We have been advising many of our client’s families for generations and this detailed knowledge allows us to develop long lasting relationships with them.”

It is not just the clients that Dickinson Parker Hill make sure are happy but also their own staff. Michael says, “All of our staff are an important part of the firm and may have worked here for a long time. This connection with the firm helps us to generate a good ‘team spirit’ and everyone’s input is valued.” The firm specialises in four main practice areas, Private Client which involves Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney, Family Law including divorce, Property and Personal Injury such as road traffic accidents and slips and trips. Michael adds, “We also advise local businesses on commercial legal matters and deal with other areas of law but these are the core areas of our practice.” Although one of the most important pieces of paperwork you will ever draw up, many people Partner Michael Prendergast
still do not understand the real need for a Will and so never put one in place. Michael explains, “Everyone should have a Will to ensure their estate passes to those whom they would wish to benefit and to avoid the complications of having to rely on the intestacy laws. Everybody should also have in place Lasting Powers of Attorney so they can specify who they would want to manage their affairs if they were not able to do so themselves.” Not only has the company been advising its local community for many years, it also raises a lot of money for local charities, notably Help the Heros this year. Michael explains, “We choose a charity on the basis of the work it does, its connection with local area and how it can benefit people in the local community. We decided to support Help for Heroes as it is a very good cause and it was being supported by the Lord Mayor of

For example we usually support West Lancashire Women’s refuge by having a Christmas Hamper raffle and we have dress down days in support of other charitable causes, our last one was in support of Comic Relief.” The team take their fundraising very seriously and certainly don’t do things by halves, “One of our members of staff has done a bungee jump for charity and I ran the London Marathon last year to raise money for Mencap,” says Michael, however, everything is taken in their stride and is all in a

A life worth writing about
Belinda Carlisle is only 52 and yet has already squeezed more things into her life than many of us could even hope to do. Louisa Austin catches up with her to find out more and discuss her impending visit to Liverpool. Gr8 Life magazine

“I have a pretty extraordinary story,” she tells me. Belinda was raised in Hollywood and says she grew up, ‘in a typically dysfunctional family like everybody else.’ Her exciting journey began in the seventies when she formed the girl group, The Go Go’s with three other girls. “Although I grew up with music and loved listening to it on the radio I never particularly wanted to get into it until I was in the Go-Go’s. We formed the band in 1978 and within 5 years we had become the most successful band in America. We worked non stop, always doing something. “ She adds, “We wrote all our own songs and played our own instruments which was unusual at the time and of course we were an all female operation.” Belinda is definitely not exaggerating when she talks about the success of the band. In fact when the Go Go’s debut album was released, it steadily climbed the American charts, ultimately reaching the much coveted number one spot, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The L.P. sold in excess of three million copies and reached double platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums ever. Although extremely successful in America, the band didn’t have the same success in other countries and so when Belinda went solo and proved a big hit she was ecstatic. “It was incredible experience to have that kind of success at such a young age. It was nice to have it in my own right, especially in Europe and then globally because the Go Go’s never

“For me it is a spiritual practice and I have
got to the stage now after six years where I honestly don’t think I could live without it.” After overcoming her addictions there was
one last thing which, as a celebrity and pop star, is almost obligatory - her autobiography ‘Lips Unsealed.’ “I wrote my book because I knew I had a
story to tell that could maybe be inspiring and helpful to people who are battling demons. I was always going to do it and it was only a matter of time but with sobriety I had some clarity to be able to look back at things as objectively as I think I ever could. “I made some very strange realisations
that I hadn’t made before, it was actually very painful to do at times. I discovered things that I hadn’t been ready to face up to previously and it was really really hard. Everything in the book however, I feel very comfortable talking about, of course there are plenty of things I don’t feel comfortable with so I held back on those!” Although life is slower paced now than it
used to be Belinda is still performing and will be back in our neck of the woods this June

when she appears at the Liverpool Echo Arena for the Here and Now tour. The shows will be revisiting the 80’s with many of the stars from that era coming together to perform their songs.
Belinda says, “The tour is going to be great
and everyone involved is just going to play their hits. For me it s great, not a lot of pressure and so much fun.” Liverpool is a very familiar place to Belinda
as she adds, “England is my second home, I lived in London for three years and since the late 70’s I have been travelling all over the UK. I cannot even count how many times I have been to Liverpool but I always have a great time and am really looking forward to coming.” For details about the Here and Now tour

RECIPE
Vérité at home FEUILLETINE OF SOUTHPORT STRAWBERRIES with vanilla cream
SERVES 4
• 250g All butter puff pastry (shop bought is fine but make sure it’s the butter variety) • Flour to dust • Icing sugar to dust • 500g of Southport Strawberries (most local greengrocers have them in stock from May to August. Buy local!) • Caster sugar to taste • 1 vanilla pod (cut lengthways and scrape out the seeds) • Grated lemon zest of one lemon • 250ml double cream • Raspberry coulis*
This dessert is always a favourite at Bistrot Vérité. It encapsulates the summer months and tastes as great as it looks.
METHOD
To make the feuilletine biscuits: Roll out the pastry as thin as you can get it and cut it into rectangles 6 inches by 3 inches (make a cardboard template to make it easier.) Line a baking tray with parchment paper and sprinkle the paper with icing sugar. Place the pastry rectangles on top then sprinkle more icing sugar on the pastries. Leave to rest in a cold place for a good half an hour to help them firm up.You will need three biscuits for each individual dessert. Preheat the oven to 200 Deg C and bake until the icing sugar begins to caramelise which should take 10-15minutes. However keep a close eye on this as it burns easily and not all ovens act the same way. Remove from the oven and place the pastries on a cooling rack.
TO MAKE THE FILLING:
Cut the cleaned and hulled strawberries in half, sprinkle with caster sugar to taste and lemon zest plus a touch of the coulis to coat them. Whip up the double cream until it forms soft peaks and add the vanilla seeds and icing sugar to taste.
TO BUILD:
Use a decorative serving plate and place a spoonful of the cream on the plate, then carefully position a feuilletine biscuit on top, layer cream and strawberries plus a touch of coulis, repeat topping off with a third biscuit. Dust with icing sugar, garnish the plate with a few more strawberries and drizzle some of the coulis. * Home made coulis is easy to do and much nicer than shop bought. Liquidise a small punnet of raspberries and sweeten to taste. If too thick, add a little water. For a smoother coulis, simply pass the mix through a sieve. This will keep in the fridge for up to a week.
