New in-house Sailing Club on Scarisbrick Hall Lake

With a famous facade designed by Pugin and magnificent grounds of 56 acres, you could be forgiven for thinking that Scarisbrick Hall School was a traditional institution. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We don’t rest on our laurels - as well as earning the best GCSE results in West Lancashire, we’re dedicated to offering the best for our pupils and that means bang up-to-date equipment and new ways of learning…

pastures new and we will all miss her very much. In a very short time, Rebecca managed to create a very elegant and sought after magazine with a strong local identity, just like herself! So, I hear you ask, who is this new person? Well, my name is Louisa and I was lucky enough to be chosen as the new editor of Gr8 Life. My thoughts about this magazine are, I think, very similar to Rebecca’s and I hope that you will find the magazine as exciting, as thought provoking, as glamorous and still a fantastically good reference source for everything local and beyond. This month for example our special feature is local property. We always feature a fabulous house, however, I thought some of the amazing homes this area has to offer warranted more of a showcase in this edition. The big event this season has been the Flower show and I was there on Ladies day to meet many of the beautifully dressed ladies who attended. It was really fantastic to meet so many of you and it was a fantastic turnout. I have many exciting things in line that I will be introducing in the next issues of Gr8 Life and I hope you enjoy reading the magazine. Of course, if you have any news or views to share with me, I am only a phone call or an email away.

It’s no surprise we make beautiful flour arrangements

Dobbies have been experts in gardening since 1865 and you’ll find the same level of expertise in our Farm Foodhalls, where we sell delicious pastries, pies, cakes and bread, freshly made every day on the premises. We insist on using the very best ingredients, from the flour and yeast that goes into our speciality breads to the fresh, locally sourced produce we use in our pies. Of course nothing complements a fine loaf better than some delicious artisan cheese or fine charcuterie – and you'll find all you need for a fabulous picnic or sandwich. For proper meals, there's fresh local meat, fruit and vegetables, and a refreshingly different choice of fine wines, beers, ciders and spirits. Whatever kind of meal you're planning, Dobbies Farm Foodhall offers everything you need to make it even more delicious.

As well as the actual design of the house you find yourself marvelling at the appliances on show. The kitchen is so up to date it is almost space age with every conceivable mod con you could imagine and the property is complete with state of the art sound, lighting and security systems. The bedrooms have amazing views and the master bedroom has one wall which is entirely made up of glass panelling. Although the whole of the house is magnificent, the wow factor really comes from the bathroom. A solitary bathtub sits at the end of the room in front of a triangle shaped window and the effect is simply breathtaking. Beautiful chandeliers adorn every room, sparkling and twinkling as the light bounces off them and mirrors strategically placed enhance bright rooms. Although fabulous inside, the property is

This new build is fantastically spacious and airy, bang up to date with technology and really shows how a modern property can be every inch as stunning as an older, more traditional one. Space without compromise Large rooms, stables, an arena and acres of land. As Louisa Austin discovers space is something this property is not without.

T

here isn’t much grander an entrance than the one that greets you at the grade II listed Aughton Hall in Halsall.

Firstly, visitors have to get past the huge wrought

iron electric gates and hope they will be accepted by the intercom into what can only be described as a sprawling estate. The drive is more a road than a driveway and when you come to the building, or rather buildings, you have your pick where to park. After all, there are five acres of land to choose from. The property itself is a fantastic three storey, six bedroomed house which in parts dates back to the 17th century. It is rumoured to have Saxon foundations and Oliver Cromwell is said to 29

Space.indd 2

have stayed at the hall during the battle of Ormskirk which took place in 1644. It has had various owners since then and was in complete disrepair for a time before life was breathed back into it in the 1970’s. If a building dripping in history and original features isn’t enough for you then add stables fit for five horses and a full sized floodlit arena. That should do you. The first thing you notice when you step into the entrance hall are the exposed beams, which adds to the overall grandeur of the property. The living room, which leads on from the hall is homely and like the rest of the house packed with original features. “The house, and especially this room has a very relaxing family feel to it, we loved the large sized rooms when we came to view it, so many properties have rooms which are so pokey and small,” owner Norma Molloy says. The beams continue in the living room and Norma says: “This bit of the house was added on a bit later than the original but the theme was carried through. Apparently the beams in this room were from old Viking ships.” Well, you don’t get much more authentic than that. Even the beams have a story to tell. Following on from the living room is the snooker room which is one of the original parts of the house. In the far right hand corner there is a huge imposing fireplace which Norma tells me is a listed feature. 30

Space.indd 3

25/08/2010 11:52

The kitchen is a large family room kitted out with top of the range appliances and is large enough to house a dining table, making it the primary place the family eat. “We normally all eat in here rather than the dining room as it is large enough and everything is to hand. It is nice to have a kitchen big enough to eat in.” As you move to the upper levels of the house you come to various immaculate spare bedrooms, rooms a size most people would be more than happy with for the master bedroom. Talking of the master bedroom, Aughton Hall’s is huge. There is no other way to describe it. And in the middle of it sits a beautiful four poster bed. The size most people couldn’t fit in the biggest room of their house. Norma says, “I love this room as it’s so big.” It goes right up to the eves.” “Even though the bed is huge the room can take it and there is still lots of space to move around.” The master on suite bathroom isn’t bad either. Top to toe in marble with granite tops this really is pure luxury in a nutshell. It is a surprise to see something so modern in such a traditional environment but it works perfectly. The extensive gardens and stables are so vast you would expect to be deep in the countryside somewhere and yet, as Norma’s husband Phil says: “It is so close to everywhere, Southport is twenty minutes away, Ormskirk is ten and the motorway is down the road. We are in a perfect location but still so conveniently near all the major towns and cities.” You would think with such a handy location, right next to the hustle and bustle of suburbia you would have to compromise on outside space somewhere but Aughton Hall proves this is not the case.

After being used as a children’s hospital during the Second World War and again as a residential home after that, this unique building fell into disrepair and was desperately calling out for a developer to transform it for many years.

There are garages at the properties, however, they are underground to a point and covered with greenery so you would never know they were there. The living rooms of the two apartments I visited are so achingly stylish you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a trendy designers own home. From the furnishings to the wavy wall in apartment six there is always something to feast your eyes on. And the good thing is, if you want all the furnishings, exactly how they are, you can have them. Or not, whatever you fancy. If you want a contemporary apartment but don’t want to compromise a traditional façade then you’ve got it right here. Rosefield Hall has a view a manor in the middle of the country would be proud of, but with Tesco Express a stones throw away. Made from Green Westmoreland slate, it was put together by a team flown in from Germany when originally built in the 1920’s. From classic cuts to sophisticated simplicity Louisa Austin outlines the fashion trends predicted this Autumn.

ummer is disappearing rapidly and so it’s out with the light floaty tops, maxi dresses and flip-flops and in with the warm winter coats, scarves and knee high boots. Simplicity and luxury seem to be the key words this Autumn with an emphasis on classical elegance and pared-down chic. There is an air of timeless sophistication based around clean lines and a good cut which is a departure away from the floaty prints and loud designs fashion has sported of late. In fact it appears the industry is doing a 360 degree turn and leaving fussy complicated styles behind in favour of a minimalist (but far from clinical) look. Faux Fur is returning this winter as it did last, and a good quality faux animal print jacket is well worth the investment as it is set to be a key wardrobe essential for many years to come. Vampy red is a great alternative to black.

Lace layering brings you bang up to date.

42

Fashion.indd 3

25/08/2010 12:11

If you want to add a little spice to your outfit and would prefer some detail, fabrics embellished with jewels and threaded with rich embroidery are also a big hit this season. Nudes, greys and blacks will be at the forefront colour wise and will go hand in hand with the classic and simple cuts.

If you don’t want to shy away from dark colours, why not give petrol blue a go.

If you do fancy an injection of colour to your wardrobe however, as not everyone fancies such simple shades, colours of the moment are petrol blue and scarlet red, perfect for evening wear when you may want something a bit more glam. Skirts and dresses will either be very short or calf length with long lengths, so popular this summer, fading into the background. The new season sees trousers which are elegant and flattering, no less than a perfect cut will do this Autumn with wide leg and boot cut making an appearance. A nice change from Faux fur is big again this season.

favoured so much in recent years. Fabrics making an appearance are heavy and luxurious, perfect for keeping that chilly wind at bay. Cotton and jersey textures will be forming the basic materials for key pieces and wool will be popping up rather prematurely as winter trends filter through. Silk is the front runner for evening fashion with lace popping up every now again to texture and complete a look. Old faithful Coast, stocked at Broadbent’s and Boothroyds in Southport, have come up trumps again with a beautiful Autumn collection that captures all the latest trends but is practical and wearable.

Well cut trousers paired with a simple nude top is the height of sophistication.

44

Fashion.indd 5

25/08/2010 12:13

Never compromising fashion for quality they have concentrated on the simple clean lines and light nude colours, daring to use the blue and red for some of their evening pieces. Jaeger has also designed their collection around the simple classical look with many of their pieces picking up the grey and black hues. Both collections hit the nail on the head when it comes to catwalk fashion, but make a seamless transition to the high street so any extreme styles seen on the runway are avoided. If you shy away from bright colours and live in your neutrals this could well be the season for you. â–

Comfy but tailored wide leg trousers are a must for a fashionistas wardrobe

Chunky jewellery sets off a simplistic outfit perfectly.

It is a rarity to come across a sweet shop these days with no Mars Bars or Milky Ways in stock, and instead jars full of boiled sweets you buy by the quarter. Southport however, is home to one. Natasha Young visits to investigate.

uying confectionary wasn’t always as straightforward as strolling down to the nearest supermarket and grabbing whatever pre-packed sugary mix will keep the sweet-tooth cravings at bay. For those of some generations it was once an occasional treat to face a rainbow wall of candyfilled glass jars, as they ummed and aahed over which of the delights on offer would make it into their quarter of pick and mix. Together with her husband Andrew, Christine Clarke had owned shops before, but it had long been her dream to bring that enjoyable traditional experience back to Southport. The Lancashire couple opened their shop, Sweet Memories, at the resort’s Wayfarers Arcade in February last year, and since then they have had to move to a bigger store within the building to keep up with the popularity it has attracted. Having space to store the confectionary was what mainly triggered the move, as Andrew tells Gr8 Life: “If we haven’t got a sweet that people ask for then we try to find it. We’ve probably ended up with about 100 extra sweets since we got here.” Their current premises are decked with a wooden interior and well stocked with all the sticky treats you can imagine, from decorative candy canes and swirly lollypops to a display of tempting homemade chocolaty delights. Not to mention the array of wicker baskets and jars filled to the brim with classic sweets and the inviting candy aroma that hits you as soon as you walk through the door. These traditional touches in the shop - which happens to be in keeping with the rest of the Victorian arcade’s boutique stores - provide a blast from the past for its older customers, while 48

It has a 10-bedded in-patient unit comprising two 4-bedded bays and two individual rooms. The Hospice has a Day Therapy Service where patients can access, among other services, creative and complimentary therapies and a hairdressing salon. Queenscourt Hospice Sponsor a Bed Appeal has so far donated over £130,000 to the Hospice.

Some of the one thousand supporters who took part in this years Ladies Star Trekk walk. The appeal started by Mr Jim Robson in 2006 to help the Hospice to have a sustained regular fundraising income stream has exceeded the remarkable figure of £130,000. Queenscourt is at the heart of our community and provides specialist palliative care to adults from Southport, West Lancashire and Formby with advanced progressive diseases (usually cancer). The majority of its funding comes from voluntary subscriptions such as the membership fees paid by each of the Sponsor a Bed supporters. The annual £120 they pay plays a significant part in funding the continued work of the Hospice, we are indebted to all of them. At Queenscourt we pride ourselves on being able to treat all our patients and their carers with dignity and respect. We are always prepared to listen and consider what is in the best interests of each of our patients to ensure that the quality of our care remains at the highest level. We now offer an ‘at home’ service to take Hospice care into our patients own home if that is where they want to be at the end of their lives, this service is called Queenscourt at Home. Every penny generated for the Hospice by our Sponsor a Bed Group will go directly towards patient care.

On behalf of Queenscourt Hospice we would like to say THANK YOU! We simply could not do it without you.

Queenscourt Annual Bike Ride This year we changed the route from Manchester/ Blackpool to Liverpool/ Chester riding through the Queensway Tunnel, over fifty riders took part to benefit Queenscourt. The weather wasn’t kind but it did not dampen the spirits of the fifty riders whose only shelter from the elements was when they rode through the Queensway tunnel. Congratulations to every one of them you did Queenscourt proud.

Hospice Mistletoe & Wine Ball Once again this very popular social event is to take place on Saturday 27th November 2010 in The Floral Hall Southport. Tickets as usual are expected to be much in demand, to avoid disappointment and to reserve tickets, please call the fundraising team at the Hospice in plenty of time to guarantee yours.

Just a stone’s throw away

To experience real travel and different values, you don’t have to travel hundreds of thousands of miles, says David Simister.

T

he last thing I’d want to do to suggest is going to the pub - but Llangollen’s best view is from the beer garden.

When you’re perched, pint in hand, on the

wooden planking just outside the Welsh town’s Corn Mill pub you’re presented with all the town’s wonders at once. Immediately in front you’ll catch canoeists getting catapulted along the River Dee, and alongside that the nostalgic charm of trains about to chug their way right up the valley. It’s a scene surrounded by stunning crests and crags for miles around, including one with an enchanting ruin of an old castle atop it. All that before you turn around and catch the town itself. Llangollen is one of those hidden gems you can’t help but love; a stone’s throw from the urbanely English cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham, but ever so Welsh without wandering into clichés. If the serenely scenic region of North Wales is a crown of Britain’s countryside, then surely this is one

of its jewels. 51

WALES.indd 2

25/08/2010 12:28

I was lucky enough to actually work as Llangollen’s local news reporter for six months, when I wrote for its Vale Advertiser newspaper, and I completely fell in love with the place. Chances are you will too, but first you have to get there. Part of the reason why Llangollen lies unspoilt in the North Welsh countryside is because it’s trickier to get to than Rhyl or Prestatyn, its competitors for tourists in the county of Denbighshire. It was cut off from Britain’s rail network more than half a century ago, but catch a bus from nearby Ruabon station itself not far from Wrexham and Chester - and the town is a ten minute trip. If you’re already in North Wales, another option is to head towards Carrog, park up and take a steam train on the lovingly preserved Llangollen Railway. At £10 per return ticket, it’s not cheap, but it does give you the chance to experience a real throwback to the steam heyday of Britain’s railway past, and all while travelling through the breathtaking backwaters of the Dee Valley. Getting off the bus in Llangollen is turning up, but showing up by steam train is truly arriving! I often arrived in a rush to report the latest breaking story, usually on Castle Street, the town’s

What do Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Aniston have in common? For a start, they all made it onto People Magazines “Most Beautiful People 2010. They all also have a ‘1000-MegaWatt’ smile! People often underestimate just how much a great smile can transform the entire face. A gleaming smile can be one of the most attractive features a person can possess – when a person has the confidence to show off a great smile, they

are perceived as happier, friendlier and more approachable. However, when a person feels selfconscious about displaying their teeth, they may feel reluctant to smile and therefore come across as bad-tempered or unfriendly. Simple procedures such as Tooth Whitening can prove extremely effective in making your smile more attractive. More involved treatments such as Veneers, Implants, Crowns and Invisible Braces can make all the difference! Take Cheryl Cole for instance - as a fresh-faced pop wannabe, her teeth didn’t exactly have the X-Factor! However after she invested in Invisible braces, Veneers and Whitening, her smile became truly amazing. At 10 Dental, on Scarisbrick New Road in Southport, there are 7 highly qualified and highly skilled clinicians. The practice is modern and state of the art, offering the most up-to-date technological advances. Our expert clinicians pride themselves

on providing superior Dental Care. Whether you wish to brighten your own natural teeth through Whitening, straighten your teeth with Invisible Braces, replace missing teeth with Implants or perfect your teeth with Crowns, Bridges or Veneers you can do so in a friendly, professional Dental Health Care environment at 10 Dental. For those striving for facial perfection, we also offer Facial Enhancement Treatment (Botox and Dermal Fillers) to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, or to plump the lips and cheeks. We welcome you and your family to entrust all of your dental care needs to us, offering affordable monthly Care Plans (from ÂŁ10.82 per month) for both Adults and Children for Routine Preventive Care. We also offer a 20% discount on further dental treatment for Registered Patients of the Practice. For a limited time only, we are offering FREE CONSULTATIONS for both Tooth Whitening and Invisalign Invisible Braces. Contact Reception on 01704 540250 / 544709 to book an appointment now.

Everyone enjoyed the lively music of the

Bourbon Street Roof-Raisers, with feet tapping and heads bobbing in time to the music. The event was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, and raised more than £1,500. Pam Walmsley of Macmillan tells Gr8 Life: “The event was attended by many regular supporters,

Michael and Val Molyneux with Edna and Eric Welch

some of whom have been coming for at least five or six years, together with others who were attending for the first time. “The band members say they always enjoy doing this event as it is the highlight of their year when they turn up as a full team of seven musicians. “We are grateful to the Hesketh family and the staff at Meols Hall for their support, and to everyone who attended to make the event such a success. The money we receive will be used to provide care and support to cancer patients and their families in our local area.”
