pring has arrived, and after the harsh winter it’s welcomed with open arms. Finally, the coat can be put into the

wardrobe and lighter, floatier fabrics can be worn without sacrificing comfort and warmth for fashion. Experts have classed spring/summer 2010 as a neo-classic style, which will be defined by wellknown designs in new styles. There will be a heavy emphasis on romantic ruffles and soft silhouettes, floaty fabrics and casual, light trousers. This is in stark contrast to the tailoring and clean lines of last winter. Predicted colours are powdery pastels in flesh and blush shades through to pinkier lavender colours in what has been suitably dubbed the ‘ballet dancer style.’ Nudes are also very big as is beige. In contrast, bright, multicoloured violet, fuchsia and turquoise garments will be in fashion for the more experimental lady who prefers a splash of colour. Large blocks of colour will feature on summer dresses and tops contributing to a striking look. Coast, which is stocked in Broadbents and Boothroyds in Southport, has brought out a 8+"(()47)91*(/

Fabrics taking centre stage this spring are silks and chiffon. Light and cool, they are perfect for the warmer weather and are extremely chic, sophisticated and feminine - and as a bonus tend not to crease. For the more daring among us, sheer and slightly see-through fabrics are big this season with the emphasis on showing off a beautiful piece of underwear as part of the look. Although thought of as a basic item, plain trousers are showing up in fashion houses all over the world - keeping the trend of sleek lines and classic chic to a maximum. Necklines are also making an impact this season whether it is plunging, strapless or halter neck they all make a statement. Neckline detail is also big with neck corsages and ruffles featuring heavily. Statement jewellery should also be high on your shopping list if you wish to follow fashion, with chunky and beaded necklaces and bracelets offsetting the soft, floaty clothing trends. Necklaces range from big pendants to full beaded layered pieces, which cover the whole neckline. Colours to look for are turquoise and brown when investing in accessories. It’s all girly this season - the style is dainty with a hint of danger - so get out there and show the gents what feminism is all about.

While Brian stayed in Southport, Marcus moved to London and worked at the famous Savoy Hotel. He also worked in Amsterdam and New York. He then, after a few other stops returned to London and spent two years there working for Gordon Ramsay at the Aubergine. Brian on the other hand decided to stay near home and worked at several establishments in the town including the busy Scarisbrick Hotel. Brian explains: “I then decided to return to college but this time as a chef lecturer, where I passed on my working knowledge of the industry to the students. “I’ve worked alongside Raymond Blanc at his restaurant; Le Manoir aux Quatres Saisons, The Waldorf Astoria, Windows on The World at the now destroyed World Trade Centre - and of course at my own brother’s restaurant in London.” Brian then came back to Southport and started his business, Eating Inn. “I and my staff bring the fine dining restaurant experience into the comfort of their home,” Brian explains. “Eating Inn’s dinner parties are popular and advertise themselves through the many satisfied customers.” Marcus is currently working in his own restaurant in London and describes it as “a fine dining restaurant serving two Michelin star food. The secret gem of the restaurant is the Chef’s Table, found in the kitchen and set back from the hotplate. It offers guests the opportunity to watch the service in the comfort of their own restaurant table.” You would think, from all they have told Gr8 Life, that they have enough on their plate, but the brothers, even with their current businesses are entering into another exciting project. With Marcus’s advice Brian is taking the Eating Inn to another level by providing wedding catering in conjunction with wedding venue Scarisbrick Hall. The

clothes hire and purchase, flowers, chauffeur service, a variety of entertainment- in fact whatever it is- even boating on the Hall’s lake- we can provide it,” adds Brian. “This reduces the unnecessary stress of shopping around.” They really have thought of everything. As a successful chef and businessman, Marcus is advising his brother on all aspects of this new venture. He has even offered his service of providing two-Michelin star weddings, if and when requested. When asked about his aspirations for the future, Brian replied that he would love this venture to be successful and become a ‘prime location’ for weddings in the future. There’s no doubt though, that with both Wareing brothers on board, this project can be nothing but successful. !

open rooms, it’s a functional home and every inch of space is put to good use. There’s also bags of storage space to hide any clutter and unsightly appliances. As well as a large utility room to the side of the kitchen, a two-door garage allows space for a workshop area and stables can be put to good use, even if there aren’t any horses. But it is ‘The Paddy House’ that is Ivy Farm Barn’s real unique feature. The quaint detached building; complete with a wood burning stove in a lounge area and a small shower room, makes an ideal guesthouse or a quiet getaway for permanent residents. “When it was used as a farm here, the Paddy House was where the workers used to sleep,” says Val. “At first we found one of those old bath tubs and you could see the markings on the walls from the bunk beds.” The tranquil garden is another of the property’s key features, and although it combines green space and cobbled pavements with two large ponds and a waterfall, Val insists: “It’s quite low maintenance. I look after it all and I don’t even know much about gardening.” The outdoor area of the property does feel somewhat remote, but Val says: “We moved here when our children were young and now they’re older they still love living here. “It is always really quiet here but it’s also well positioned for Formby, Southport and Liverpool. “And there’s potential for anybody to make this house how they want it because of the mounds of space.”

Local business woman gives small businesses big opportunities “Our preferred partners are companies who have recognised the value of these services. We only accept one business type in each locality which allows each business to offer exclusive services.” As part of the arrangement Gill also ensures each ‘partner’ receives valuable advertising both in newspapers and on radio. “Often when business gets tough the first thing to be cut is often the advertising budget but it’s critical for survival that companies continue to have a profile. If we fail to target our customer base, business will suffer. I take this strain away from our partners by providing positive media exposure.” Once a business signs up they become part of an important network. hocolate isn’t as bad for you as many people think.” Says Kathie Grimes, owner of Churchtown’s quaint Chocolate Shop.

But she would say that wouldn’t she? Well

actually, it’s a fact. Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants in it

than blueberries, red wine and green tea - so why all the fuss about it being bad for you? “If you eat too much of anything it can be bad for you.” Kathie tells Gr8 Life. “But in moderation, it’s enjoyable.” Chocolate, which originates from Latin America, has many benefits overshadowed by the negative myths, which have been around for centuries - bad skin being a classic example. “Contrary to popular belief, chocolate doesn’t cause acne. Also, as with anything, eating more calories than you burn off will lead to weight gain, but if you are sensible chocolate will not make you put on weight.” We have all known for years that eating chocolate can improve our mood - but recently it has been scientifically proven. “As it melts in the mouth, endorphins (a biochemical compound) are released in the brain producing feelings of pleasure,” Kathie explains. “So if we have had a bad day we now know that eating a piece of chocolate really can make us feel better.” 56

Timeshare accommodation can be of a higher standard than hotel or rented accommodation, and most resorts have extensive leisure facilities (generally free to use). All timeshare is self-catering. Accommodation ranges from a modest studio (a single bedroom) to apartments and villas with three bedroom, three bathrooms, lounge, dining etc. with appointments to a high standard. Timeshare

Shaping up for summer is easier than you could ever imagine with Gymophobics unique 30 minute workout. Since opening the first Gymophobics in Lichfield just 3 years ago more than 5,000 women of all ages have achieved dramatic inch and weight loss. With ten centres open and many more scheduled for this year, Gymophobics has become the first port of call for women who hate conventional health clubs and find them intimidating.

We asked Donna Hubbard (Gymophobics founder) to explain their amazing success: Donna “Ladies love Gymophobics because of the very fast inch and weight loss, but there are many other reasons for its popularity. Most women find Gyms intimidating, so I have made Gymophobics a friendly, social and all female environment. Most Gyms are very impersonal, but Gymophobics has a caring approach that makes every lady feel special”.

What women use Gymophobics? Donna: “Basically, women who CALL NOW TO ARRANGE A want FREE VISIT don’t to GUEST spend hours in the gym and want some TLC and attention while they exercise. Jazz Weekend

A

fter ten full house concerts, a record breaking sixth Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend concluded with

a gloriously informal session in The Royal Clifton’s Chatsworth Lounge. The sad news of the passing of jazz legend Sir John Dankworth had come on Saturday evening through a phone call from vibraphonist Jim Hart who had rushed from his gig at the festival to appear at the 40th anniversary concert at Wavendon after which Dame Cleo Laine made the announcement of her husband’s death. Their son, the masterful double bass player Alec Dankworth was scheduled to play in the headline finale on the Sunday evening in the Steve Waterman All Star Tentet.

Thanks to the hard work and planning of Southport Melodic Jazz Club’s team of volunteers, the dedicated support of the Royal Clifton’s management and staff and a fantastic audience. Most of all, thanks to the 80 brilliant musicians who made this an event to remember.” Photography by Paul Bentley ARPS
