n behalf of everyone involved in this project I am delighted to welcome readers to this special publication, which is determined to help stimulate business and increase pride in our beautiful coastal resort. This publication is a celebration of all that is good about Southport and follows our hugely successful Pride In Southport (published earlier this year in which we revealed £200 million has already been invested in our town over the past 10 years, with a similar amount planned for the next decade). Now, at a time when trading conditions around the globe are in serious difficulties, Southport is bravely facing the challenges and finding ways to turn adversity into opportunity. One such example was the I Love Southport marketing campaign launched by the marketing group of Southport Business Enterprise. It was a collective enterprise to promote business in the town. The concept speaks volumes about the business community. It’s a great example of positive action and one of the reasons why this wonderful town will survive the downturn better than others. Building on the success of that campaign, our publication I Love Southport Because... adds a new dimension to the promotion helping to extend the life of the investment already made. It will also help to increase awareness and encourage greater support of the original aims.
because...
I Love Southport Because... is totally dedicated to Southport and is being delivered with The Champion to every household in Southport. You will read page after page of the positive side of life in our town, be it our fantastic shops, our amazing leisure facilities or our bustling nightlife. Copies of I Love Southport Because... will also be placed at strategic locations around the town and be distributed to visitors providing an interesting and informative read, highlighting all the attractions, goods and services Southport has to offer. We are proud to serve Southport. We are equally proud to reinforce and spread the word about our many strengths and attractions and to play our part in stimulating business and job creation. Let’s ALL love Southport! Betty Drummond, Managing Director Champion Media Group

The wide boulevard of Lord Street is said to have been the inspiration behind the stylish streets of Paris. Just a short walk away is the pedestrianised Chapel Street, leading to Eastbank Street - one of the main arteries into the town. Southport’s town centre is also full of hidden gems - so make sure you don’t bypass the side streets and arcades. The resort has a wealth of celebrated independent stores and is noted for its jewellers, antique dealers and bookshops, that boast some celebrity clients.

ecently Southport has seen a boom in its hotel industry. In 2008 the Ramada Plaza opened on the Promenade, overlooking the Marine Lake, to give a major boost to the resort’s conference facilities. Earlier in the year the five-star Vincent opened its doors on Lord Street, on the site of the former ABC cinema and has since attracted a wealth of A-list celebrities to the town, including Jude Law, Wayne and Coleen Rooney and Marc Almond.
Southport the Classic Resort has something to offer for everyone and all ages, come for the day, the weekend or a short break and you will be astounded at the quality accommodation on offer from a traditional guest house to a luxury hotel, we have got the lot.

EXPERT ADVICE TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE CORRECT SHOES FOR YOUR CHILD
outhport is well known for its Victorian architecture and the stunning domed glass roof of Wayfarers Arcade is one of the finest examples of this. Understanding the importance of protecting the beauty and heritage of the Grade 2 listed building, owners Lord Street Properties have invested £2 million in refurbishing the arcade. The renovation works were sympathetic to the arcade’s Victorian history and culminated with the completion of the arcade’s new floor. The original mosaic edging is still retained but the central area has now been covered in terrazzo tiles and the design of the portico is echoed in a special feature area under the dome. A £350,000 project, that took two years of careful planning and three months to implement. Wayfarers is well worth visiting for the architecture and floor alone, but add to that over 30 stylish and individual shops, then for that unique shopping experience Wayfarers Arcade must be on your list.

...it’s a great place to live because...
A
t least eight reasons crop up regularly in buyer surveys, most highlighting the central fact that new homebuilders generally offer a range of benefits that the second-hand market cannot match. Increasingly, the ‘green’ character of new homes is now among the highest-ranked attributes that makes people choose new, says New Homes Marketing Board chairman David Pretty. “Virtually all new homes are built to the latest mainstream environmental standards and are vastly more energy-efficient – and therefore generally much cheaper to run,” he said. “The message seems to be getting through that new homes, even when many may look traditional, are ‘green’ homes – certainly the greenest you buy from the open property market right now.” So what exactly do buyers prefer about buying new in Southport?
The most common reasons given by customers are: • A pristine, untouched and perfect new home • Fully-fitted, state-of-the-art kitchens and bathrooms • Energy efficiency – new homes are green homes, built to the latest environmental standards and cheaper to run • Choice of certain finishes and coverings • Opportunities to view example properties in advance, repeatedly if required • Wide range of no-strings help packages • Southport’s excellent location • Ten-year Warranty
Said David Pretty: “The deals, assistance and options that new housebuilders are able to offer are simply not available when buying second-hand homes. Many builders now give help with deposits or Stamp Duty, with discounts, part exchange and a whole raft of other benefits. Very often, these benefits make the difference between people being able to buy and not being able to buy.” He added: “What’s more, the economic downturn has brought new home prices in line with the second-hand market, so there is not even a ‘brand new’ premium any more. Buying new is even better value right now.”
