2016 Atlantic Table Tennis Cup Title sponsored by O’Regan’s Mercedes-Benz Limited Atlantic Table Tennis Cup

Message from Atlantic Canada Ping Pong Association’s Committee On behalf of the Atlantic Canada Ping Pong Association(ACPPA), I wish to extend my warmest appreciation to everyone attending our anniversary event. This is the eighth year of our tournament and it will be a milestone for ACPPA. With a larger scale event, 20 invited teams from provinces across Canada, 100 table tennis players and over 400 attendees will be participating in this year’s tournament. I give my sincerest Thank You to all ACPPA committee members, event co-organizers, umpires, volunteers and tournament sponsors for their past and continuing support. Without you sacrificing your personal time to prepare the tournament, this tournament could not be as successful. After 8 years’ growth, the association has built strong connection with both the local community and other multi-cultural society across the Atlantic Region. ACPPA has showed a positive and dynamical picture to the society. Just recent month one of our junior player who is also a training student in ACPPA training center won the champion in 13-year-old group of Nova Scotia Competition. And he joined the National Tournament as a represent of Nova Scotia. We would like to congratulate him on his winning. ACPPA aims to promote sportsman like spirit and provide a platform for competition and communication among players and communities. During past 8 years, our unique operational model has attracted many sponsors to continuing support for this event. This year, it is my pleasure to give a welcome to our newly title sponsor, and great appreciation from the ACPPA committee to O’Regan’s Mercedes-Benz Limited. A special Thank You to our title sponsors, O’Regan’s Mercedes-Benz Limited and Sun Life Financial. Atlantic Canada Ping Pong association training center was established in 2009. Club stared with just 4 low quality tables but a group of people who are highly passionate on table tennis.

Thanks to Nova scotia table tennis association, we were able to purchase 8 high quality tables in the following years. With great effort of our coaches and volunteers, ACPPA training center had attracted and trained countless new young players across the province, some of which, like YangNuo has became key players in our provincial junior team competing in national level tournaments. With 8 years’ development, ACPPA training center not only has become one of the best known place to train young kids from group zero to hero in table tennis but also playing an important role on training new umpires to server to annual team competition tournament, the event that has become one of the biggest sport event in Nova Scotia. In September2016, ACPPA training center made a major movement which is to relocate our home to Dalhousie Sexton campus gym. It is the mile stone to ACPPA training center as we are now having the best location ever that would benefit much more people in the future. Our story is just begun, we dream that one day ACPPA training center would find and train our own champions not only in national level but international as well and we believe that day will come soon.

Ryan’s Story with ACPPA Connected with Ping-Pong In November 2010, Ryan just turned 7. His parents brought him to watch the ACPPA annual table tennis tournament. Ryan was immediately fascinated by the wonderful sport and he began to fall in love with playing table tennis. Since then, he has determined to become a table tennis player. Also from that moment, he began his table tennis training under the coaching of Ms. Hong Wang. A Not-so-easy Road of Life When Ryan was 5, he was unfortunately diagnosed to have type 1 diabetes. Since then, this innocent, bright and cheerful child began a new life of the track that is quite different from his peers: poke a finger, squeeze blood, take a blood sugar test, inject insulin, then start eating … become his daily routine. In order to avoid complications associated with poor diabetes control, blood sugar must be controlled in a good but yet very difficult to reach target. He has to poke his fingers and test blood sugar more than 10 times a day. More if ill or sick. Diet is another important part of the diabetes control. Diabetes patients need to try their best avoid consuming high-sugar foods and drinks. It is not an easy job for many adults, not to mention he is just an ignorant child! When his peers can freely enjoy desserts and sugary drinks, Ryan has to have the perseverance to resist the temptation of such sugary food, because he knows it does not do anything good for him. Hypoglycemia is something a diabetes patient wants to avoid the most because severe hypoglycemia can put a patient into coma instantly and cause severe brain damage. Although physical exercise can help to regulate blood sugar, intense training can often cause low blood sugar. Since Ryan started the training on table tennis, He has never made an excuse such as poor health to avoid training or lower his own training requirements. He did not give up table tennis training or becoming lazy at it. He always performed training the same way as other children do, same intensity, never asked for any special attention.

Success stems from not giving up Under Ms. Hong Wang Hong’s well-organized training, Ryan has made a great progress in his table tennis playing. As long as time permits, Ryan would not miss a single table tennis training class organized by ACPPA. After a few years, many of his table tennis team friends have left the training ground, either due to family reasons or their own interest changes. Ryan, however, stayed. He did not give up the sport for physical or other reasons. He was never afraid of losing, but takes it as a new starting point. In the game, he always tried his best not matter his counter player is weaker or stronger than him. This often unexpectedly placed quite a pressure to his opponent. Some player’s coach even called him “little tiger”. Fruitful Achievements Ryan’s efforts were not wasted: he had since won provincial championships (11-year-old table tennis champion and 13-year-old table tennis champion) in his age group for many years. When Ryan was still a grade 6 student, he was recruited in the school junior table tennis team of Ridge Cliff Middle School. Together with his team members, the school team took back table tennis championship banners for both the capital region and provincial NSSAF competitions. This year, Ryan was in grade 7 and he has been once again selected to school team. Once again, the team has won the capital region and provincial table tennis championships (junior). In the past spring, Ryan has also won the provincial championship in the 13-year-old age group and invited to join the provincial table tennis team (15-year-old youth group). As the youngest member player in the provincial team, he has been doing really well in both the 2016 Atlantic Table Tennis Tournament and 2016 Butterfly Canadian Championships. The team has won the 15-year-old championship in the Atlantic Table Tennis Tournament. He also obtained his personal best in the Canadian Championships. Besides table tennis, Ryan also loves music. He plays in both the school and cadet bands. He especially loves to play piano. In the past six consecutive years, he has received musical awards from local examination center, and has been invited to perform at the Celebration of Talent Concert held in Mount Alison University, New Brunswick.
