The Red Crowned Cranes tells a moving story between red crowned cranes and their raisers. This dance drama embodies the raisers’ strong love for those endangered birds and the harmony between human beings and nature.

中国无锡歌舞剧院无锡市演艺集团歌舞剧院（江苏民族舞剧院）由诞生于1958年的无锡市歌舞团发展组建而成，现有演职员150余人。剧院坚持“代表先进文化的前进方向”，创作演出了一大批时代性、民族性、地方性相结合的具有江南水乡特色的歌舞节目，形成了剧院鲜明的个性和特色。剧院创作演出的大型歌舞《江南好》、舞蹈诗《太湖鱼米乡》和民族舞剧《阿炳》、《西施》、《红河谷》、《茉莉花》、《绣娘》、《金陵十三钗》和舞剧《丹顶鹤》荣获国家和省市各种奖项。剧院多次应中央电视台和上海、江苏、浙江等电视台邀请，参加春节、元宵晚会等重大演出活动；先后出访美国、加拿大、德国、瑞士、俄罗斯、法国、荷兰、以色列、摩洛哥、土耳其、突尼斯、日本、新加坡、韩国、菲律宾、澳大利亚、新西兰、香港、澳门等20多个国家和地区，进行文化交流和演出，受到广泛好评。 Wuxi Song and Dance Troupe of China Wuxi Song & Dance Troupe (also known as Jiangsu Folk Dance Theatre) was established in 1958, and now has over 150 staff members. The Troupe has created the grand song and dance drama Beautiful South China, folk dances The Blind A Bing, Red River Valley, Jasmine, and dance dramas The Embroidering Lady and The Red Crowned Cranes. The Troupe toured in Canada in 2012 and 2013, and has visited over 30 countries and regions around the globe.

刘仲宝：无锡歌舞剧院（江苏民族舞剧院）院长，国家一级编导、国家一级演员。他带领剧院创作了大型歌舞《江南好》、舞蹈诗《太湖鱼米乡》、舞剧《阿炳》、《红河谷》，近年来还推出了《茉莉花》、《绣娘》、《金陵十三钗》、《丹顶鹤》、《英雄﹒玛纳斯》等一批优秀舞剧作品。 Liu Zhongbao, Director of Wuxi Song and Dance Theatre, national grade-A director and dancer. He has created and directed the grand song and dance drama Beautiful South China, dance poem Land of Fish and Rice at Taihu Lake, and dance dramas A Bing and Red River Valley. In recent years he led the production of dance dramas and plays Jasmine, The Embroidering Lady, Thirteen Ladies in Nanking, Red Crowned Crane, and Hero Manas.

He has organized and arranged Canadian tours for many events and performances from China, including the Chinese Dinosaur and Archaic Animals Exhibition, the National Ballet of China, Shanghai Ballet, Guangzhou Ballet, dance show The Beautiful South China and dance drama The Embroidering Lady. In 2015, he adapted the script of The Red-Crowned Cranes for a western audience, and collaborated with Peter Quanz and the Wuxi Song & Dance Theatre to produce this international version of the dance drama.

His diverse aesthetic encompasses classical and contemporary ballet, contemporary dance/theatre experiences, and classical Chinese dance. Cultural immersion is a signiﬁcant component of Quanz’ work and he is attracted to projects that offer opportunities to build international cooperation.

张娅姝, 无锡歌舞剧院一号女舞蹈演员。 10岁进入四川省舞蹈学校，15岁拿下全国“桃李杯”舞蹈大赛金奖，16岁成为郑州歌舞剧院“挑大梁”的主力舞剧演员，19岁遇伯乐加盟无锡歌舞团。她成为落在舞台上的精灵，再也停不下旋转的脚步。从《风中少林》中爱断情伤的素水，到《西施》中青涩的“西施”、《红河谷》中豪放妩媚的丹珠、《阿炳》中不惧强暴的琴妹、《茉莉花》中勇敢的茉莉，直到情倾一生的《绣娘》——每一个角色都是破茧化蝶的双翼，她爱在其中，永远在追求更大的舞台。 Zhang Yashu, the principal dancer of Wuxi Song & Dance Theatre. She has performed as the leading role in dance dramas Xi Shi (2007), Red River Valley (2009), Jasmine (2010) The Embroidering Lady (2012), The Thirteen Ladies in Nanjing (2013), and The Red Crowned Cranes (2015). Zhang Yashu has won many prizes in national, provincial and municipal competitions.

He entered the ballet world by way of Ukrainian dance at the age of six. He has performed in Going Home Star, Nutcracker, Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet, The Princess and The Goblin, Peter Pan, Romeo and Juliet, Dracula, Swan Lake, A Cinderella Story, Wonderland, Carmina Burana, Quantz by Quanz, In Tandem, As Above, So Below, Hikarizatto, In the Upper Room, and The Red Crowned Cranes.

Dear Friends: As Her Majesty’s representative in Nova Scotia, it gives me great pleasure to bring you greetings on the occasion of the 2016 China – Canada Year of Cultural Exchange – “The RedCrowned Cranes” Dance Drama. This wonderful celebration is indeed a very special occasion for us to honour and praise the cultural exchange between our two nations. We are fortunate to live in a province with a vibrant Chinese community that is committed to providing opportunities for all Nova Scotians to experience the rich traditions of Chinese culture. Special events such as “The Red-Crowned Cranes” Dance Drama deepens our appreciation and respect for each other and fosters an environment that values diversity as an integral part of our society. I wish to extend a warm welcome to all of the artists performing this evening. I am certain that it will be a deeply rewarding experience for both the performers and the audience.
