Hemostatic agents have long been used to

Did You Know? In 2018, we had 4,662 Treat&Refer calls which

calls. There are only 6 state certified agencies (only 4 in the valley) to perform Treat& Refer: Buckeye, Surprise, Tempe, Golder Ranch, Rio Rico, and Chandler.

Rescue Concern It is AMR policy that all patients transported must have ALL 5 seat belts used. Policy states, "They should never be removed from the gurney or tucked behind the mattress for any reason...If they have to be removed for patient care, they should be reconnected once the intervention is completed."

control bleeding. Advances in medical science have led to some very effective hemostatic dressings and we are now adding these to your arsenal for bleeds that may be difficult to control.

Coming soon... QuikClot! QuikClot gauze is loaded with Kaolin which is used for a bleed difficult to control. Kaolin causes a cascade clotting effect to the blood that significantly helps to stop bleeds. QuikClots are more expensive then regular dressings so please reserve them for bleeds that are tough to control. Keep an eye out for the Target Solutions training link to watch that will include additional information.

TRAINING

DIVISION

1st Quarter Overview We just wrapped up 1st Quarter fire training, and everyone did great! Crews are becoming efficient in their use of the 2 1/2" pre-connect lines, and are quick to advance them. They are just one of many tools on your truck, and a great selection when crews need big water, fast. The initial training for High-rise/Mid-rise went well, also. These types of calls are both labor and resource intensive, but crews balanced both well and did an excellent job.

19-01

2nd Quarter

2nd Quarter live fire training builds on 1st quarter, using 2 1/2" lines in smoke and heat filled structures. Outside temps are starting to heat up as we approach summer, so we are asking crews to stay hydrated!

3rd Quarter

Welcome Firefighters! Lauren Hargrove, Conor Corken, Jared Klein, Hanson Hanger, Tanner Goergen, Tyler Hoyle, and Trevor Szewczak.

3rd Quarter will be driver training. We ask that crews get out in their districts and allow everyone some Code 2 driving time to become familiar with the apparatus. Fire Training is looking forward to working with everyone!

STRIP MALL FIRE DISCUSSION On May 18, 2017, a 31-year-old career firefighter died after fire conditions rapidly deteriorated inside a commercial strip mall ... “The Ladder 35 captain sized up the scene, assumed incident command, and directed Engine 35, the first arriving engine company, to pull a pre-connected hose line while the two Ladder 35 firefighters forced open the front entrance door to a fitness center where smoke was showing. The Ladder 35 captain directed the Engine 35 lieutenant to take the charged hose line inside for an offensive attack…” Consider discussing the following questions with your crew: What goes wrong during this incident that costs this FF his life and sends two others to the hospital? Would we do the same thing(s)? How can you reduce the chance of this happening in Chandler? Link to the NIOSH executive summary: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/fire/reports/face201714.html

BEST PRACTICE FOR PREVENTING CANCER Full PPE must be worn through the entire incident, including SCBA during salvage and overhaul. Following exit from the IDLH, and while still on air, you should begin immediate gross decon of PPE using soap and water and a brush, if weather conditions allow. Place PPE in a sealed plastic bag and place it in an exterior compartment of the rig if possible. After gross decon, while on scene, the exposed areas of the body (neck, face, arms, and hands) should be wiped off with wipes. Change clothes and wash them after the fire. Do this as soon as possible and isolate clothes in a sealed plastic bag. Shower as soon as possible. PPE, especially turnouts, should not be brought into the station.

Save the Date

“ The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently undertook two large studies focused on firefighter cancer and concluded that firefighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general population in the U.S.”

NFPA Wipes or soap and water should be used to decontaminate and clean apparatus and SCBA. Tobacco products of any variety, including dip and e-cigarettes should never be used at anytime on or off duty. Remember to document any exposure!!!!

TURNOUT TIME ANALYSIS

METHODOLOGY The 90th percentile turnout times for all Code 3 incidents within Chandler and the county island were calculated using the following formula:

First Unit Enroute Time - First Unit Dispatch Time = First Unit Turnout Time

Data Source

Time Frame

Data was extracted from ImageTrend, which provided response times transmitted from CAD.

Data used in this analysis was from the period of January 1, 2019, to March 31, 2019.

Special Note: Turnout times for CR288 include Code 2 responses.

Criteria An apparatus had to be the first arriving unit. The incident had to occur in the City of Chandler or the county island. The response mode was Code 3 (i.e., Code upgrades or downgrades were excluded)*

The Department adheres to NFPA 1710 benchmarks for response times. Given this, Code 3 turnout times for fires should be less than or equal to 1 minute and 20 seconds and medical should be less than or equal to 1 minute.
