Chief's Message Opportunities for career advancement are quickly approaching for many of you. With that said, there are three questions that should be included in your testing preparation. 1. What are the foundational values of the Chandler Fire Department? 2. What do these values mean to me personally? 3. How can I apply these values to the position I am seeking? I wish everyone luck in achieving your career goals. I also want to thank every Department member who is taking the time to develop our future. -TD

Updates & Reminders

As a reminder, non-transport EMS equipment is provided by CFD and not AMR. Any TNR, field termination, or refusal should be restocked using our supplies. CFD EMS supplies are restocked at each station by a primary and secondary person on A-shift. Should you see your EMS supplies dwindling, please let you’re A-shift brothers/sisters know. Organization EMS is in the process of trying to reconfigure better ways to carry our medical equipment. Currently, we are working on our airway box and pediatric bag. Thanks to the crews we have worked with on getting ideas. The process so far has revealed that we tend to be pack rats. We ended up finding one engine having nineteen I-Gels stuck in various places. We do not need a full set of every tool we carry in every bag. Please keep the airway in the airway, peds in the peds, etc. We found one gray box with a broken latch directly related to the overload of EMS gear inside it. Most likely, you will be treating one or two patients at a time, so there really is no need to have 4x4s and IV start kits for 10+ patients. Please do your best to only restock what’s missing/needed.

"It's not a faith in technology. It's faith in people." Steve Jobs, Co-founder of Apple

Working with newer technologies comes with its challenges; we are in the midst of utilizing our rig phones, Zoll monitors and iPads; with the intent of working in synchrony.

The Zoll monitor uploads information up to the cloud using the hotspot from our rig phones, the iPad downloads this information which we then have to upload/save to Image Trend and the rest is history, not so much! We understand that this is not always the case and suggest considering these steps when connectivity is an issue. If you cannot download the CAD incident or Zoll file within Image Trend, enter the incident information manually, EMS can subsequently add information to the chart once Image Trend resolves the issue. As a last resort; paper charts will work, which could be transferred to an Image Trend chart later. 2

3rd Quarter 4th Quarter Fourth quarter training will be PALS and the rollout of Handtevy.

New Pilot Program Begins We are starting the refusal pilot program this quarter you learned about in 3rd quarter training. We will be evaluating the program over the next three to six months. Please let EMS know of any concerns/ comments you have during the pilot. Though you are welcome to patch anytime you feel the need, the idea of the pilot is to make better use of everyone’s time by minimizing mandatory patches on incidents that fall into the criteria outlined in the program.

Paramedic Testing The medic written exam will be on February 18th with the practical portion of the process starting the week of March 2nd. We have at least 33 EMTs looking to become paramedics. We salute all of your efforts in preparation for the testing process. We don't exactly know how many students will be going through this medic class, but for now it is at least 7.

Third quarter EMS training has ended and we hope you were all able to take away good information to help provide excellent patient care.

Story of the Quarter While arriving to CRH with a BLS patient, EMT Johann Cougher and Paramedic Caccia noticed an adult male down on the sidewalk. Johann stayed with the ambulance (patient was stable) while Gregg grabbed the monitor and a BVM and ran to the passed out male. Bystander CPR had begun by a couple of CRMC medical techs on the pulseless, apneic and cyanotic patient. Gregg applied the defib pads, identified V-fib and delivered a 150J shock. Once the shock was delivered, L288 and CRMC ER personnel arrived and placed the patient on a gurney. As the patient was being taken in, Gregg noticed the monitor showed what looked like normal sinus complexes. Pulses were checked and confirmed, the cyanosis improved and the patient sat straight up on the gurney, took a deep inspiratory breath and let out a loud "roar". We later learned from CRMC that the patient was adamant about being discharged that evening but they were able to convince him to be monitored overnight and then let him go home the next morning. Nice work Gregg and Johann!

TRAINING DIVISION

3rd Quarter Overview H I G H L I G H T S

The Training Division has been rolling out training non-stop, and we are glad to report that our crews are nailing it! In 3rd quarter we were able to get all CFD crews and IGAs through the driver's training. Many members reported that they got a new appreciation for the complexities and responsibilities of driving fire apparatus. 4th quarter training highlights the heavy logistical requirements of mid-rise fires, and the teamwork required for initial offensive operations. We have been getting positive feedback, and the training has been moving smoothly with crews working in attack teams, moving larger lines, and coordinating resources on higher floors.

Crews from Station 2810 have been training on ladder company functions at the FTC. With the help of Captains Tom Shaw, Andy Houser, and Ralph Barr, the 2810 crews have been putting in hard work, becoming proficient in vertical ventilation applications, as well as vehicle extrication techniques.

Your Chandler Fire Department FTC has been the home of 4th quarter East Valley Ladder

Training. Chandler has been host to over 12 fire departments, with instructors from

Chandler and Mesa sharing roof operations expertise and assisting ladder companies refine their skills. 4

IN THE WORKS

Brush 287

We are in the pre-build phase of our new Brush truck that will be replacing our Brush287. It will be a Ford F550 crew cab chassis with a custom body build by Rosenbauer. Expected completion date is approximately one year from now.

Please send all spare hoses stored at the stations to Logistics. Many fire apparatus operators don't realize the significant impact that vehicle speed has on REMINDERS

stopping distance. Every time you double your speed, the stopping distance quadruples!

Ladder Production

Pictured is the new lift gate pickup at Logistics.

SUPPORT SERVICES Members of the apparatus committee will be traveling to Rosenbauer Minnesota at the end of the month to perform final inspections on the three new ladder trucks. These are 101-foot ladder platforms.

The mechanics have installed 50% of the Medi-Redi drug refrigerators in the front line apparatus. They will install the remaining units as vehicles come in for periodic maintenance. Mechanics installed a roof A/C unit prior to going to Pride. 6
