MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT It’s an exciting time to be at Chandler! The 2017-2018 school year marked another successful milestone in Chandler’s mission to provide our students with the highest quality and most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. As a school and as a community, we accomplished great things. As always, we are especially thankful to our faculty, staff and administration for their leadership. But we also benefited tremendously from the support of the entire Chandler community – parents, grandparents, friends, alumni, trustees and, especially, our students. During the year, we were fortunate to find extremely talented leaders as the new heads of both the lower and middle schools. Emily Brown comes to us as the Lower School Director with a wealth of experience from her time at Polytechnic, and Jill Bergeron brings to her role as Middle School Director a myriad of prior Chandler experiences. I can think of no better team to work closely with John Finch in leading the school for many years to come. As usual, the depth of support for Chandler was evidenced by the nearly 100% parent participation rate in this year’s Annual Fund. Combined

4 CHANDLER SCHOOL

with the generosity of grandparents, alumni, trustees, friends and faculty, the fund raised over $1,350,000 for our school. This vital source of funds allowed us to prioritize resources that provide the margin of excellence that sets Chandler apart from other schools. 2017-2018 also marked the first year of Chandler’s recently adopted long-term strategic plan, “Leading Together.” Along with input from representatives of the entire Chandler community, the school’s Board adopted this plan as a roadmap for our future. If you’ve not yet had a chance to read the plan, I encourage you to do so; its thought-provoking questions are precisely those that the Board and administration ask themselves on a regular basis. Speaking of long-term planning, the Chandler community couldn’t help but notice the outline poles for a potential new building set up just before graduation. The school has embarked on the city approval process for the latest addition of exciting new learning spaces for our students. We will keep you informed about the progress as the latest physical addition to the Chandler campus becomes a reality! Finally, though it was largely happening behind the scenes, Chandler’s faculty, staff and administration were already beginning the hard work in anticipation of this coming year’s re-accreditation process. Every 7 years, Chandler welcomes a committee of outside educational experts to review all aspects of our school. Though the review itself provides a helpful outside perspective on our school and its program, the self-reflection required in advance, started during the 2017-2018 school year, is often the most valuable component. Chandler prides itself on always striving to be better, and this process is therefore quite useful.

On a personal note, this was the first year Wende and I enjoyed having one Chandler Lower School student, one Chandler Middle School student, and one Chandler alumnus at home. Never before have I been able to truly appreciate the full ‘Chandler life cycle’ and how well the school prepares students for whatever the future may bring. Seeing our oldest son’s continued appreciation of Chandler and the ongoing connection with his Chandler friends helps remind me on a daily basis what a special place Chandler has always been. As a final note, I’d like to personally thank the entire Chandler community for their commitment to and support of our school. Chandler continues to be in an enviable admissions position and the school has never been stronger financially. The school’s leadership team is focused on continuous improvement, and they are starting from a position of strength. I am grateful to you and to all the other members of the Chandler community whose support is recorded in the pages of this report. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you!

Harry Andrews: A Transformative Opportunity Thomas Chandler had the conviction to create a school that was not just excellent, but life-changing. He understood that giving students access and opportunities would alter the course of their lives, and furthermore, create a ripple-effect of positive impacts on society. I am living proof of his vision. In 1953, a single, low-income working mom and Thomas Chandler began chatting in the waiting room of a dentist’s office at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena. The subject turned to her son (me) who recently had been diagnosed as “slow” in second grade in the local public school. Mr. Chandler offered to investigate, and months later I was enrolled at Chandler School’s Altadena campus with all tuition waived. Memories of those student days include music-appreciation classes, football practices (I was never good enough to actually play in a game, but that didn’t matter), and Mr. Shattuck’s math classes. My most unusual memory was the “Woody” station wagons that picked up and delivered the students to and from school, daily.

A few years later, Mr. Chandler asked my mom what high school I would attend, and her answer was “public,” but Mr. Chandler had other ideas. After a phone call, I found myself enrolled with a full scholarship at The Thacher School in Ojai. In 1960, still following the trajectory Mr. Chandler had set in motion, I took a scholarship to Harvey Mudd College, followed a year later with a scholarship to Stanford University to study electrical engineering. Ultimately, I earned MS and PhD degrees from the University of Southern California. Due to Mr. Chandler’s kindness in 1953, I enjoyed a career as a tenured professor at USC; then with startup companies in the electronics industry. Essentially, we discovered how to recognize patterns to capture images digitally, which became the early foundation of digital images such as the JPEG and MPEG. You could say we discovered the pixel. Our enterprise eventually was acquired by 3M, sending me to Minnesota and then Milan, Italy. I racked up 4 million miles of global travel, and learned all about international business as well as world cultures. Although I never learned much Italian, I did love the Italian people. With a wonderful wife of 45 years, we have raised two daughters. Now, we’ve established The Andrews Family Foundation Scholarship Endowment in Memory of Thomas A. Chandler, which provides tuition assistance to qualified Chandler School students.

“I’m so grateful to Chandler, the

school where it all started for me. I am proof that financial aid re-writes the history of an individual’s life. There is no greater gift to a person or to society than to help someone else to develop their full potential.” - HARRY ANDREWS ’56

The Chao Family A beloved memory for David and Connie Chao was watching their kindergarten twins clutch the reassuring hands of their older Middle School buddies. That moment came full circle earlier this year, when Connie saw her son, Aidan, gently leading his kindergarten buddy by the hand. “It almost brought me to tears,” Connie says, “I still remember their very first day at Chandler.” The Chao family did their homework before enrolling their twin sons, Aidan and Aaron ’20 at Chandler. “Ultimately, it was Mr. Finch who made the difference. We liked how he knew everyone – the parents, students, and even their siblings. He’s passionate about his job and does it well,” said David. When Mr. Finch asked David to assist with the school’s capital campaign efforts, “It was our Kindergarten year and, I was honored to help,” said David. “That led to my joining the Board a year later, as well as the Golf Classic founding committee. As a board member I’m proud that the changes and growth in programs have been well-planned and for the best intentions of the students.” “We like how involved this community is,” Connie adds. “The parents are very engaged, and it feels like a family. The CFA does a wonderful

10 CHANDLER SCHOOL

job providing opportunities for involvement, and teachers here pay attention to the well-being of the whole child.” “Teachers at Chandler know our kids and what will be best for them, both academically and personally,” Connie explains. “For us, with two different boys, Chandler was able to provide the best individual experience for each child, with differentiated pathways that built their strengths and supported their interests.” “We think of the Lower School as the perfect foundation and the Middle School as the perfect summit before transitioning to high school,” says David. “Every day, our boys come home and talk about how much they are learning in science, history…their teachers make the subject matter interesting. The individualized curriculum, engaging teachers and opportunity for leadership and character building are the strengths of our Middle School that shouldn’t be missed.” “The boys have learned to be leaders,” notes David. “They have learned from Mr. Finch to greet people by name and to shake hands. They take care of their little buddies and their friends.” Connie adds, “Events like Big Service Day are great for service and community. Participating in these events enriches the lives of our kids and models respect, sympathy and caring.”

The Chao family takes a long-term view to supporting Chandler. “We’re planting the seeds for the future, and it’s our duty to give now,” David says. “We put Chandler first because it’s making a direct impact for our children and for later generations.” “We try to always support everything at Chandler – the Annual Fund, campaigns, and the CFA,” Connie explains. “We love to do more than give money. I try to do everything I’m asked – room rep, hot lunch volunteer, Shamrock Shoppe, Party Book, Chinese New Year. I look forward to it all.” David and Connie agree, “These experiences for Aidan and Aaron are priceless. Chandler is like an extension of our family. Chandler School is the best investment we can imagine.”

“We’re planting the seeds for the future, and it’s our duty to give

now. We put Chandler first, because it’s making a direct impact on our children and for later generations.”

The Weigandt Family “When an organization says it has high standards, and then actually delivers what it promises, that organization is worthy of support,”

says Don Weigandt, of his family’s ongoing loyalty to Chandler School. Don and Betsy, parents of Russell ’95 and Thomas ’99, and parents-in-law to Samantha (Witter) Weigandt ’96, enrolled their sons at Chandler upon the recommendation of neighbors, who touted the school’s strong academic program. The boys did enjoy top-notch academics, and much more. “Mr. Korn’s class and his Substance X

project were pretty impressive. We didn’t see that material again until our junior year of high school,” recalls Thomas. “Mrs. Anderson in fifth grade pushed us kids, but we felt rewarded in the end when she took us for ice cream,” remembers Samantha. “Also, sports were competitive but inclusive, and field trips to Huntington Gardens and the Norton Simon exposed us to all that Pasadena has to offer.”

Don notes that his sons graduated from Chandler with more than an education. “They were wellrounded as a result of having experienced sports, arts and other things in addition to academics.” Tom agrees, “Chandler fosters a well-rounded student through sports, arts, music and certainly the academics. Everyone got along well together and the teachers set a good example.” Notes Samantha, “Thanks to Chandler’s language program, I took the most advanced language classes at Westridge and Harvard-Westlake, and ended up studying in Paris for university.” As a golfing family, Chandler’s Golf Classic has proved to be the ideal annual gathering for the Weigandts to stay connected to Chandler. “It’s fun to see people, and we make a nice day of it,” explains Don. “Plus, Samantha keeps on winning.” Samantha is the four-time champion of the ladies’ Longest Drive competition. Tom sums up, “We want to continue to support organizations that make a personal difference in our lives, and deliver something valuable. We’re local, and we had such a great experience at Chandler. We love Chandler and want to keep it going!”

EIGHTH-GRADE CLASS GIFT Members of the Class of 2018 along with their families and friends rallied together to raise funds for an annual Chandler School tradition – the eighth-grade class gift. Chandler is grateful to the Class of 2018 for their contribution of $10,000 to fund an art mural for the South Campus and also support the Starlight Foundation through advocate Salima Darakjy ’92 and Bikes 4 Orphans, founded by Sebouh ’10 and Shawnt ’12 Bazikian. We are so proud of the Class of 2018 who chose to look beyond the gates of Chandler and support these organizations that are making a difference in the lives of children around the world.

PROFILE IN GIVING

The Berger Family If the Berger clan regards Chandler as a second home and an extension of the family, it’s justified. For 40 years, they have shared Chandler teachers, uniforms, the school song, traditions like Boojum, the Sportsa-thon, and Substance X, and innumerable dinner conversations about their beloved school. They have been students, alumni, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of Chandler students, as well as trustees, room reps, class representatives, and alumni council members. This year, the youngest of the Berger clan, Grace Berger ’19, will graduate and join her sister, parents, aunt and cousins as a Chandler alumna. And, although times have changed, the school’s essence and values have remained.

Chandler lifers. “What I appreciate most is that Chandler taught the girls how to succeed,” says Sean. The girls all have benefitted from Chandler’s challenging academics and good relationships with caring faculty. “What we learned are long-lasting lessons,” says Maddy. “Chandler teachers are great at getting the students out of their comfort zone and getting them to thrive,” says John. Meta, Jay’s wife, recalls that the children’s study habits are excellent; homework time was a pleasure at their house. “When they were younger, I’d bring my granddaughters home after school and they’d visit their great-grandmother Ruth (now 102) and play cards with her after their work was done.”

“We chose Chandler for our daughter Karin because it felt like a safe, family environment with a good learning atmosphere and strong social component,” recalls Jay Berger. “The culture, community, and caring nature of the faculty and staff have remained the same.”

For Ruth, who has attended over 20 Grandparents' Day events at Chandler, seeing the kids flourish at Chandler across multiple generations has been incredibly special. In addition to Grandparents' Day, Ruth reflects, “I love going to all of the events, games, and performances. I love Chandler.”

Karin Berger Stellar ’85 paved the way for her brother John ’88, who married a Chandler alumna, Jennifer Jackson Berger ’85. Both families sent their daughters to Chandler: Sofia ‘15 and Emma ‘17 Stellar, and Maddy ’16 and Grace ’19 Berger, who are all

much fun and always figured out how to get everyone interested.” Unanimous praise overflows for Ms. Williams-Moore’s leadership in music, Ms. Glista’s caring touch, and Mr. Korn’s inspiring science labs. Over the decades, Chandler has benefitted from the Berger family’s willingness to get involved and generosity in supporting school initiatives. “We understand the school cannot grow on tuition alone, and we continue to contribute and hope to encourage others to do the same,” Jay says. Jay and John both served on Chandler’s Board of Trustees. As a former Board President, Jay remarks, “I cherish all of the relationships that I made from fellow Board members, administration, faculty, staff, and parents. It was all so meaningful to me.” John, in addition to the Board, was a founding member and President of Chandler’s Alumni Council and has served in the vital role as co-chair of the Golf Classic. “Giving back is very important to us as a family,” says John. “We realize that philanthropy and volunteer service are important to strengthening an organization.” Jennifer sums up, “We’ve made lifelong friendships at Chandler. The academics, the arts, technology, the campus – all of it is excellent. But it’s the Chandler community that we value the most.”

BIG GREEN GIVEBACK

Laurence Eggers '60 Douglas C. Gregg, Jr. '62 Eric Winter '62 Roger Riffenburgh '63

A HUGE SUCCESS!

Thanks to alumni and parents of alumni, during our Big Green Giveback, Chandler raised over $25,000 to support financial aid at Chandler. A dedicated group of alumni, parents of alumni and faculty volunteers received over 150 gifts in one day. That included over 30 new donors to Chandler. With gifts to the Thomas A. Chandler Scholarship Fund we are able to offer financial aid to qualified students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Chandler education. Thank you to our dedicated volunteers and generous donors.

PROFILE IN GIVING

Raymond Jimenez ’05 You were at SpaceX until late last year? Yes, I worked as an electrical engineer and mission director. While I was there, I learned to ask lots and lots of questions. Questions lead to solutions. Actually, the biggest takeaway from my Chandler education was, “Don’t be afraid to ask questions.” My last assignment as a Dragon Operator was as a mission director during the reentry shift. I made the final calls in mission control (I liked to say, “the buck stops with me”). It was a real privilege to work with the operations team, and I’m incredibly proud that they allowed me the honor to perform reentry on three different missions.

Now you’re at Phase Four, developing plasma engines for tiny satellites? Technology has advanced to the point that satellites don’t need to be big, they can be the size of a toaster. The technology in propulsion therefore needs to shrink. We make a small plasma engine that allows tiny satellites to move around in space. We’re using radio frequency plasma heating. I design the electronics architecture and make the circuits, then test it to make sure it’s ready. We’re a small team of about 20.

You wrote a book? It was about working on nuclear fusion in my garage

40 CHANDLER SCHOOL

when I was in high school. It’s called Amateur Nuclear Fusion. As a kid, I learned a lot by playing around with things. It actually started as a conversation I had with Mr. Korn. “Mr. Korn, can I get extra credit if I build something to do with fusion?” I didn’t end up doing it in middle school, but I never forgot that discussion. In freshman year of high school, I discovered a friendly community of folks who had done fusion in their own homes – all to learn about the science and engineering behind it. After I built my fusor and succeeded in performing fusion, I wanted to encourage others, and so I wrote the book.

Tell me about the time when you almost burned down your home. Well… I’ll preface this by saying at no time was anybody in actual danger, but boy were the sparks pretty. I was working on an upgrade to my fusor’s high voltage supply. Due to a miscalculation, I ended up with a little bit of melted plastic, a big crater in my perfect iron core, and some smoke. That was fun!

What are some of your fondest memories at Chandler? Mr. Korn ran a good eighth grade science class, and I was always curious about the details. I remember finding him after class one day to ask, “Mr. Korn, why are things colored the way they are? What

makes some things red and some things silver?” Mr. Korn didn’t have an immediate answer, and we talked through the possibilities. What struck me most was that Mr. Korn was willing to give a guess and preface it with “I don’t really know, but you should find out!” I think that was the first time a teacher ever told me they weren’t sure, and that I might be able to find out anyway. (The answer turns out to be complicated and I didn’t really get it until college!) I was also on yearbook, and Ms. Payne (Mrs. Laird) was our advisor. I remember her telling us what the results had to be, but not really defining much else. I sat down with the program we used and found out that it (InDesign) was the same program that real publishing professionals use! It was such a treat to be let loose and be allowed to experiment, with the equivalent of a pro’s palette in hand.

How did your interest for science and engineering begin? I’ve always liked taking things apart and trying (unsuccessfully) to put them together. Engineering tells me how to put things back together again, and science tells me why it’s put together like that, so it seems like a natural match. Also, science and engineering allow me to play with cool things like lasers and plasmas, so that was an easy decision!

At Caltech, I did some interesting research. My lab and mentor allowed me to design a microchip from scratch that measured the function of nerve cells, then transmitted the info to the outside world via modulated laser light. It’s rare that an undergrad designs a full integrated circuit and gets to see the chip fabbed, and I’m grateful they gave me that chance.

What advice do you have for Chandler students who are interested in exploring a science related field?

how the world works” if you come to an easy conclusion, but make sure that’s what the evidence is saying. In engineering and science, Nature makes the final calls, and no matter how much you try to massage the data or simplify the model, Nature doesn’t care.

What do you think about students today tinkering and making? Do more! Taking things apart is tons of fun, and putting them back together is optional.

Keep on asking questions and hold yourself to a high standard. It’s easy to fool yourself into thinking “Ah, so this is
