MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

The 2016-2017 school year was a tremendous success. As always, the credit and thanks for another remarkable year must go out to our hard-working faculty, coaches, specialists, staff, administrators, parent volunteers, alumni and trustees. It was my last year as Board president and as a member of the Board of Directors. More importantly, it was my first year as a Chandler parent. While I remember what Chandler was like during my years as a student, it was fantastic to see that the school and its traditions have continued to grow and strengthen in the many years since I graduated. Chandler has a multitude of achievements to be proud of, as this report shows. One massive accomplishment is that we yet again reached record numbers in the Annual Fund. For the first time in Chandler's history we achieved 100% parent participation. This is an amazing accomplishment that speaks to the strength of our community. Getting to 100% participation speaks to the commitment of our families and provides a strong message to the outside community regarding the caliber of Chandler School and our families.

4 CHANDLER SCHOOL

While every family has reliably supported the school over the years, in no way do we take it for granted! We continue to expand our efforts in outreach to alumni, past parents and the community at large to build momentum in support of Chandler. An example of this can be seen by our increased alumni giving and parentof-alumni giving. Both categories have continued to increase over the years, and while under unfortunate circumstances, this support became even more evident this year when we came together to celebrate the life of Paul Korn. Although the loss of Mr. Korn was a blow to us all, the community came together to honor a distinguished and beloved faculty member. In that effort, the Paul Korn Scholarship Fund has already raised over $67,000. These funds will go to provide financial aid for deserving students Γ’€“ something Mr. Korn cared about. One other feat I am particularly proud of is that Chandler managed to pay off the entirety of the debt that was taken out during the South Campus Project. Some may not share my nerdy sentiment regarding debt repayment, but this is a phenomenal accomplishment. Chandler has been in a position of financial strength for years. We are now even better situated to move into the future. We have facilities to match our incredible academic program and we are unencumbered as we look towards potential future goals and needs. As mentioned during the year, the Board spent a great deal of effort on the strategic vision of the school, developing a Strategic Plan. The

effort behind this went far beyond the board, as faculty, administration, parents, past parents and alumni all came together. That collaborative work produced a great plan, "Leading Together", that will serve as our guidepost for an ambitious future for the school. I would like to acknowledge Monte Baier for his role in leading this charge and bringing the Strategic Plan to fruition. As always, we are committed to our mission of providing all our students with the highest quality educational program in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. Our success is built on the continued involvement of our families and your loyal financial support. I am excited to see where we all go from here. In summary, I am grateful to everyone for their steadfast commitment to Chandler. As this report shows, we are in a position of financial strength, and credit goes to those people who you see recorded on the pages within. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, please accept my sincere thanks for your extreme generosity.

PRO FI LE IN GIVIN G

The Christopoulos Family Judie Christopoulos remembers seeing Chandler’s idyllic campus in 1979, and liking it immediately. And when Head of School Jeff Stephens told her he could enroll all three of her boys - Tom '81, Jim '82 and Tony '85 - she says, β€œI’ve loved it ever since.” Judie’s passion for education is self-evident. She speaks eight languages, and cheerfully repeats the family mantra she grew up with, β€œIf you can’t do your best, then don’t do it at all.” Although her husband, Gus, whisked her away from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign a few units short of her degree so that he could launch his flagship restaurant – a diner just a toss away from Wrigley Field – she immediately finished at Northwestern. β€œI could never have let my father down,” Judie explains. Judie’s son, Tony, and his wife Lynnette have carried on tradition by enrolling their own three children at Chandler: Alyssa '17, Vanessa '18, and Niko '21. β€œWe wanted great academic preparation for high school,” says Lynnette. β€œAnd, the school has also done a good job teaching our kids to have integrity, honesty and dignity.” β€œI love that we came back to Chandler and discovered a lot of alumni from my years who now send their own kids to Chandler,” Tony point outs. β€œIt’s really fun. Chandler had a positive impact on our lives, so there’s shared pride in the school.” As a student, Tony messed around on an early computer the school set up in a basement lab. β€œI was so blown away by that thing, and it’s probably why I got involved in computers,” he says. β€œI studied computer science at Pomona College, and I’ve worked in software development my whole career.”

Beyond the primitive tech lab, Tony easily recalls other influential teachers and experiences – Mr. Cotton’s beloved baseball games at recess, Mr. Korn’s Substance X project and his humor and sarcasm, the egg-drop contest that kept students up at night, and Mr. Morrison’s European map project. β€œI had a very, very correct map,” Tony chuckles. β€œI was scared of Mr. Stephens; he was so stoic, but he had great values.” Tony’s brothers agree Chandler’s top-notch education made a difference in their lives. Tom has built a successful construction business as a general contractor, and also plans to open a restaurant in Montrose, Gus and Andy’s, in the old Rocky Cola CafΓ©. Jim is an expert witness economist who still runs his grandfather’s old hot dog joint in Chicago – Jim’s Original. Community features prominently in Christopoulos family life. Judie has been ultra-connected to the local Greek Church since 1974. She quickly runs out of fingers as she and Lynnette list the number of philanthropic projects she’s been involved with. β€œI can’t even remember them all,” she admits. β€œBut, I get it from my mom. She gave all her time to the church, she was always very generous. She always opened her home to feed everybody around a huge table, and she did all the cooking herself.” Lynnette points out, β€œWe love knowing all the parents at Chandler School. It’s a very family-like community. I know the kids, the siblings, the parents. Chandler feels like home to us.” In fact, the Christopoulos kids are known to plead for early drop-offs and late pick-ups, so they can spend extra time at school. β€œIt’s like home to them,” Lynnette says.

When it comes to helping Chandler sustain excellence across generations, Tony and Lynnette have been quick to step up. β€œIt just makes sense to give,” Tony says. β€œThe school has to stay ahead of the curve, with the best programming and the best teachers. The infrastructure, technology – these are all areas that can’t be neglected.” Judie, who with Gus made a major family contribution to Chandler’s South Campus Campaign, agrees, β€œWe wouldn’t have the programs we have, if families didn’t give. And, we have a legacy here, with seven kids. Chandler has shaped multiple generations. It was right to give back.” Judie adds with a smile for emphasis, β€œWe’re very big fans of Chandler!”

EIGHTH-GRADE CLASS GIFT Members of the Class of 2017 rallied together to raise funds for an annual Chandler School tradition – the eighth grade class gift. In memory of beloved eighth grade science teacher Paul Korn, the class unanimously voted to designate their gift to the Paul Korn Memorial Scholarship Fund. At Commencement, Alexander Albrecht, the lead fundraiser for the eighth grade Bike-A-Thon, presented Mr. Finch with their class gift. Chandler School is grateful to the Class of 2017 for their contribution of $14,524.52 to the Paul Korn Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides tuition assistance for qualified students who otherwise would not be able to meet the financial requirements of an independent school education.

ALUMNI & PARENTS OF ALUMNI MAKE

BIG GREEN

GIVEBACK A HUGE SUCCESS!

Thanks to alumni and parents of alumni, during our Big Green Giveback, Chandler raised over $30,000 to support financial aid at Chandler. A dedicated group of alumni, parents of alumni and faculty volunteers received 171 gifts in one day. That included over 40 new donors to Chandler. With gifts to the Thomas A. Chandler Scholarship Fund and the Paul Korn Memorial Scholarship Fund, we are able to offer financial aid to qualified students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Chandler education. Thank you to our dedicated volunteers and generous donors.

Casey Zuber Solomon ’00 credits her Chandler teachers with creating a supportive environment where she could be herself and get involved. β€œSome of my best memories at Chandler include participating in school activities with my friends, even when those activities were outside of my comfort zone. Everyone was encouraged to be part of the community,” Casey says. β€œFor example, I had so much fun playing C-team basketball, even though we were terrible! And Mr. Salmon was always so nice about giving me a non-singing part in the plays.” A proud Chandler lifer, Casey explains, β€œChandler was a formative experience for me.” It was here that she learned time management and organizational skills that later helped her succeed at Polytechnic and Stanford, then Georgetown Law School. β€œI am grateful that Chandler gave me so many tangible skills that I use every day,” Casey notes. Today, as an associate with the global law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Casey works in the corporate department where she counsels clients on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions. Though her career as a corporate attorney keeps her busy, Casey gives back to Chandler by enthusiastically serving on the Alumni Council. β€œI’ve met so

many wonderful people, and I love hearing what the school is like now from current parents and teachers,” Casey says. β€œIt’s important to me to give back to Chandler teachers and the community that gave me so much. I am also happy to support Chandler financially because I know that as an alum, all of my contributions go toward financial aid, which helps students who otherwise might not be able to attend.”

Naomi Hatanaka '07 Naomi Hatanaka ’07 traces her passion for giving back to her days at Chandler School. β€œI learned that doing things for other people is important,” says Naomi. β€œChandler was pivotal in sparking that passion and helping me define what I want to accomplish in my future.” Later, as a high school student at Flintridge Prep, Naomi co-founded a non-profit organization that provides needed transportation and food to cancer patients in Nicaragua. β€œWe’ve done some good work, and we’re hoping to continue to grow,” Naomi says modestly. β€œCurrent students run the non-profit now.” Chandler did a fantastic job preparing students for success, according to Naomi. β€œChandler teachers were so dedicated to our development - intellectually and personally. Teachers were there for me at every junction.” Naomi laughs, β€œJill Bergeron taught us the most efficient way to organize our binders. Those organizational tips are absolutely key in my current career. Chandler teaches so many fundamental lessons, and the earlier you learn them, the easier you’ll have it later.” Naomi studied social entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley. She now works as a consultant at Deloitte, where, in addition to advising corporate clients, she co-leads a program that pairs analysts with growing, global non-profits for pro-bono work.

β€œI give to Chandler because I had an amazing experience, and I want to see Chandler continue to impact students,” Naomi explains. β€œExperts say elementary and middle school are pivotal times, so if we invest at these ages, students can get further and make the world that much better.”
