CHANDLER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT
2018 2019
The Mission of Chandler School is to provide each student with the highest quality and most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. We strive to have our students gain a love of learning, a means of thinking independently and an ability to work collaboratively. A Chandler education seeks to develop good character, self-reliance and a commitment to community in students as a foundation for academic and personal success.
GRATITUDE!
Thank you to each and every donor, volunteer and family who is listed in this 2018-2019 Annual Report. This report of giving shows the immense generosity of the Chandler community. Your contributions in both time and resources have an immediate and lasting impact on the education of Chandler students. The successes of Chandler fundraising programs such as the Annual Fund, CFA, Endowment, PFS!, campaign and more are a testament to the loyal commitment of the entire Chandler community.
The school Goals are to uphold the Chandler tradition of academic excellence and intellectual discipline in a program that develops the mind, body and spirit; to promote respect, trustworthiness, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship, which are the core values of our school community; to foster an educational environment that values and communicates respect for racial, religious, cultural and economic differences; to serve the greater community, in recognition that as much is given to us, much is expected from us.
This Annual Report covers the fiscal year starting August 1, 2018 and ending July 31, 2019. Gifts received after July 31, 2019 will be acknowledged in next year’s Annual Report. The Advancement Office has made every effort to ensure that all information is correct. If any errors or omissions are noted, we offer our apologies and ask that you notify the Advancement Office at (626) 795-9990.
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT The 2018-2019 school year may seem by now like a faint memory, but as always it’s exciting to look back and see what we were able to accomplish together as a community. Though I’ll get to those accomplishments in a minute, let’s not forget our single biggest achievement: furthering Chandler students’ love of learning, character, academic abilities and growth and confidence in themselves. It’s easy to get swept up in plans for the future, work that needs attention, and everyone’s daily and weekly schedule, but I’d like especially to acknowledge the entire Chandler community’s contribution in making a difference in Chandler students’ lives. Faculty, staff, administration, parents, grandparents, friends, alumni and trustees all deserve credit for their unwavering support throughout the year. And to our students in particular, we are proud of you! We recognize your hard work as well. One obvious milestone for anyone who’s been on campus recently was the final green light to start construction of our new interdisciplinary building that will house a music and performing arts studio, our new Innovation Lab and a flexible learning classroom. Like any large endeavor, this building would not have been possible without the hard work of many, the faculty and administration for identifying and defining our current greatest physical need and our trustees, architects, builders and the City of Pasadena for planning, designing and approving the project. And most importantly, thank you to the dedicated community of leadership donors, the torchbearers, who through every milestone in Chandler’s history have generously provided the resources needed to continue to build our campus and build our children’s future. Beyond this one very visible milestone, 2018-2019 saw: The completion of a year of self-study and then 2019’s visit from CAIS and WASC’s accrediting team. In July, Chandler was reaccredited for a term of seven years, the maximum possible. Continuing a recent trend, Chandler received a 22% increase in its applicant pool for the 19-20 school year. The community clearly recognizes the exceptional value of a Chandler education, and it is rewarding to see this reflected in our admissions data. Chandler’s Annual Fund hit 97% parent participation and raised over $1.3 million from all constituencies. Alumni participation has increased
2 CHANDLER SCHOOL
dramatically with over 500 alumni engaged in school and alumni activities. This is a testament to Chandler’s Alumni Council and their commitment to inspire alumni families to maintain a lifelong connection with the school. The highly successful Gala raised over $197,000. A big thank you to co-chairs Nadia Shamsi and Sharick Smyser-O’Keefe for creating a wonderful celebration for the entire Chandler community. Thank you to CFA President Hong Yoon Plurad for her fantastic leadership throughout the year. For me personally, this year has been bittersweet – my last year as Board President and as a member of the Board of Trustees. Fortunately, Wende and I still have two middle schoolers so we won’t completely miss regular campus visits! Taking stock of my time serving the school, one of John Finch’s favorite quotes keeps coming to mind (with all due credit to Percy Shelley): “Nothing wilts faster than laurels that have been rested upon.” It’s clear to me that the faculty, staff and administration of Chandler are tirelessly focused on learning, growing and adapting as a school. Despite its rich history and tradition as well as legacy of academic excellence, Chandler has never stopped improving itself. With leadership from John Finch, Jill Bergeron and Emily Brown as well as incoming Board President Joe Lin, I look forward to seeing Chandler’s bright future unfold. But for now, in looking back at 2018-2019, we are grateful to all the members of the Chandler community whose support is recorded in the pages of this report. You are the ones that help make Chandler special. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, my sincere thanks.

The McInerny Family Any child growing up in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s can tell you about the indelible mark left by iconic moments in history during that time - the moon landing, the civil rights movement, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the Nixon years. Any child who grew up during those times at Chandler will tell you about the lasting impression made by caring teachers, the camaraderie of fellow classmates, and the nurturing community of Chandler. Recently, we had the opportunity to catch up with the McInerny family. The five siblings who all attended Chandler - Kate ’67, Jim ’69, Rob ’70, Dan ’73 CHS ’77, John ’77, and their mom, Nevill, reminisced recently about their time at Chandler. Returning to Pasadena from two years in Fresno, CA, Dan describes what it was like coming to Chandler. “Coming to Pasadena and going to Chandler was such a warm welcome to our whole family. We met new lifetime friends. It doesn’t matter where we are in the world; we have a connection to a time and place that was very special.” All grown adults with children of their own, and some with grandchildren as well, they all have varying memories of how Chandler was unique to them. For Kate, it was the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Despite the tragic event, she remembers how Mrs. Cockerill was there for her 5th-grade class, helping them
8 CHANDLER SCHOOL
process what had happened by writing their thoughts and mourning alongside her students. Jim and Kate fondly remember English teacher Cathy Rose and recently spearheaded efforts on behalf of their classes in support of the Catherine M. Rose Endowed Scholarship Fund. Kate credits Ms. Rose for developing her as a writer, but also fostering her love of literature and nature. She recalls that Ms. Rose had her own personal paperback library in class, filled with her favorite books. She says, “Cathy had a love of birds. These small creatures of such beauty and fascination inspired her to become a lifelong student and advocate for them. As her student, I became one of her fledglings. It's only natural that I return to help give wings to this incredible legacy Cathy has chosen for future Chandler alumni.” Jim also recalled something else that made Chandler special for him. In one word it is "family.” Chandler, he feels, has an exceptionally nurturing spirit. It develops a child at every level, not just academics or sports. He recalls public speaking in particular, being able to memorize and recite poems. This, he feels, prepared students to become better orators, something that is invaluable into adulthood. Jim's experience at Chandler inspired him to return after college (Stanford '77) as a faculty
member. He taught history, math, and coached football. Later, in 1990, he also served on the Chandler Board of Trustees as Secretary and Vice-Chair. Robert McInerny (Bob), his dad, had previously served on the Board as ViceChair and Chairman (1968-1976) while several of the siblings were still attending Chandler. Rob recalls, “My most vivid memories of Chandler were on the field. I really loved sports, and Chandler gave me some wonderful opportunities to explore my athletic abilities.” Mom, Nevill, states, “It was all so much fun, and such an excellent education for each and every one of our children…and in many ways, for us too!” In 1976, Tom Chandler honored his friend Bob McInerny by establishing The Robert T. McInerny Award for Outstanding School Service. The award is given annually to a student who demonstrates good citizenship, is a model for other students, and shows leadership in organizing school activities. Whitney Chandler, Tom Chandler's daughter, remembers Mr. McInerny as a “kind and generous gentleman, with high standards and a great example to society and children". For the five McInerny siblings, this award has been so meaningful because it is a wonderful reminder and living legacy of what made their dad such an exceptional citizen himself.
As Kate says, “there was a time when I felt disconnected from Chandler because the school had changed so dramatically. Teachers retire, students move on, but now I have come full circle. Chandler remains just as committed to its students, the education is probably even better, the caring faculty was replaced by new caring faculty. Walking back on campus, I can sense
it and I feel reconnected. It remains a culture of being like family." Although the McInerny children came to Chandler during a turbulent time, as Dan says, “Chandler was an island and a haven from all of these socio-political events that were happening in the world.” Feeling emotionally and
physically safe is so essential for the academic success of every child. Children can focus, learn and achieve in such a nurturing environment. This can happen on any campus, but Chandler embodies the intangible - feelings of school unity, community, family and home. This was true in the sixties, and 50 years later, it is true today.

PROFILE IN GIVING
Dr. Sunjay Lad ’95 “My parents have always led by example, teaching me the importance of philanthropy and service to our community. In high school, they presented various ways in which I could participate. Having a father who was a dentist and mother who was a pharmacist, I would join my parents while they volunteered at community health fairs and screenings,” says Sunjay. Having an interest in medicine at a young age, his parents encouraged him to volunteer at Huntington Hospital and other local hospitals. But his parents did more than just present Sunjay with local opportunities. Dr. and Mrs. Lad volunteered internationally, bringing much-needed dental services abroad where access to these types of services were scarce. For Sunjay’s parents, the inspiration to give back stemmed from their experience as immigrants. As adults, they immigrated to the United States, but the struggles that they went through, what their own parents sacrificed, and what their friends who also emigrated experienced, were something that united them. As Sunjay says, “No one who comes to this country does it alone. Although the blood, sweat, and tears are your own, there is a community behind you.” Much the same way, the Lad family believes that whether communities are struggling in another country or whether they are in your backyard, if you are in a position to help, you help.
28 CHANDLER SCHOOL
One teacher who made an impression on young Sunjay was science and math teacher Mr. Korn. “I feel like I am not the first nor the last who feels this way about Mr. Korn, but I think he made science engaging and made a difference in the lives of many students in my generation.” Although he had family in healthcare and an interest in medicine, Sunjay’s career path was anything but linear. He went to Stanford and received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. His “aha” moment was while he was finishing up his degree. He realized that dentistry was something in which he could still incorporate science,
but also help people, ultimately improving their health. “I have a greater appreciation for all the ways Chandler prepared us to succeed,” says Sunjay, “there were the academics like science and math, but the emphasis placed on being proficient in Spanish has been paramount for me, as a provider in Southern California. It has helped me in my practice, but also in the service work I do with non-English speaking communities.” One organization that Sunjay volunteers with is The California Dental Association, which hosts

CDA Cares, a program that unites dentists and other dental professionals and community volunteers to provide dental services at no charge to communities in need. According to the CDA website, the impact of these providers coming together has equaled more than $25 million in dental services. Sunjay also volunteers his time in his local community. He visits Chandler first-graders annually during February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, and other local schools to talk about the importance of oral health care. This year, our Advancement team congratulated Sunjay for his twenty years of consecutive giving to Chandler. When most young adults were busy
choosing majors or cramming for finals, Sunjay was committing himself as an alumnus to the legacy of Chandler as an institution. There is a W.E.B. DuBois quote that says, “Children learn more from what you are than what you teach.” As a father of three, Sunjay aims to instill the value of philanthropy by his own example. “I hope my children will see the importance of supporting the community that will ultimately help shape who they become.”

Joe and Samira Mallinger The summer before their son Cole ’20 was starting Kindergarten, the Mallinger family moved from Redondo Beach and found themselves in a new city, unfamiliar with the school choices they had. They decided to take a look at local private schools to see some of their options in what would soon be their home, their neighborhood, and their community - Pasadena. On their tour with John Finch, they visited classrooms, saw the variety of sports, dropped into art classes, listened to the music coming from the music room. They knew after touring the school that Chandler would be a fantastic opportunity for their son. Having an educational background, Samira saw the immense support of faculty at Chandler, and they both decided this school would be an excellent fit for Cole. For the Mallinger family, raising “three decent, kind, and thoughtful kids” is the biggest wish they have for their children. And for

three very unique children, Chandler has been a place that has allowed each of them to thrive in different ways. For the oldest, Cole ’20, Chandler allowed him the opportunity to enjoy different interests from playing sports to acting in plays and singing in musicals. As Samira says, “Cole is an outgoing, happy, and active kid. He enjoys being involved in his school community. Chandler supports his various passions.” For Cole, having the ability to choose different activities ensures that he is always enthusiastic about trying new things. Connor ’22 has developed into an active and confident young man. He loves to play sports and spend time with his friends. He was able to find himself and his own personality in part because of the teachers at Chandler. Samira felt the teachers gave Connor so much support at Chandler, and she says, “It’s wonderful to see how far he has come. Speaking in front of people is so natural to him now because of teachers who have nurtured him.” Ava ’24, the youngest child, is a very creative and artistic kid. She enjoys art, music, reading, sports, and dance. Ava’s confidence has grown tremendously since first starting at Chandler. Joe recalls the pride she felt from having a piece of her artwork from the annual ArtWorks Exhibition selected by parent curators to be framed and displayed at Chandler for the year. Being so passionate about
art, this was a major highlight in her time here at Chandler. The Mallingers know that Chandler is providing their kids with a strong academic education. However, they feel that “the most important thing Chandler has taught our kids is how to study and manage their time. Having to learn how to balance their schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and still have free time has been invaluable to each of them.” Joe believes that “Chandler is teaching our kids how to be autonomous. The foundation they are building at Chandler is something they can take with them wherever they go. We are confident that once our kids leave Chandler and enter high school, they will be well-prepared to succeed.” They also have many positive things to say about the faculty and the traditions at Chandler. Samira comments on how much time teachers put into their lessons and the passion they have in teaching the children. “With both of the boys in Middle School, we’ve seen tremendous growth in their learning. The amount of information they can retain shows that they understand the concepts they are learning. The teachers are constantly finding creative and engaging ways to present the material.” Samira also loves that Chandler has traditions and opportunities to help families be involved in their
children’s education. Her favorites are the annual Holiday Program and the seventh-grade English Expo. She says, “The seventh-grade English Expo was incredible. I can’t believe how brave the kids are to share their stories. It was amazing to see them present their work with maturity and confidence at such a young age.” As a former fourth-grade public school teacher, Samira has an appreciation for faculty and knows
that good teachers make for successful schools. Inspired by their experience at Chandler, we are grateful that Samira and Joe chose to establish an endowed professional development fund for faculty.
such a supportive community overall that it is easy to give back. “Chandler offers many opportunities to get involved and to support the school. No matter how you choose to contribute, your efforts help to maintain a strong school community.”
“As a school and a community, we are fortunate to have families like the Mallingers. They are committed to the mission of Chandler,” says Head of School John Finch. Joe says that Chandler is

BUILDING OUR FUTURE AT CHANDLER
Last year, members of the Board of Trustees, administration and leadership donors celebrated the approval of building an interdisciplinary space for collaborative, hands-on teaching and learning. The new LEED silver-designed building will have three floors. It will house the Music & Performing Arts Studio, an Innovation Lab and a flexible learning classroom. This new building will become an extension of our classrooms and support the existing curriculum, including STEAM, maker, robotics, engineering, design thinking and
project-based learning. It will also inspire our faculty and students to implement new ideas and provide flexible areas that will adapt to the program and the needs of the students and teachers. It will be situated in the center of campus and be used by all students K-8 and unites the Lower and Middle School. We are grateful to our dedicated community of donors who have championed our ambitious plan. We eagerly anticipate the opening of the new building in the fall of 2020. 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT 45
CFA BOARD MEMBERS 2018-2019
CHANDLER FAMILY ASSOCIATES The primary mission of the Chandler Family Associates (CFA) is to build strong relationships among students, parents, faculty and staff, fostering a vibrant community at Chandler. This dedicated group of parents hosted a myriad of events, including the Gala and new service projects that benefitted not only our school but the local community. The addition of the Community Service Chair and Arts Chair positions have brought value to the board, directly supporting our teachers and programs. Last year, CFA supported several school initiatives, including funding for the professional development of our teachers, a very successful ParentEd Speaker Series and support of diversity efforts. The most significant contribution was the investment in the safety of our kids. The new upgraded emergency alert system included two-way intercoms, outdoor alerts, central volume and remote triggering. There is no better investment than the safety of our students and we thank the CFA, the parent volunteers, and the community behind Chandler School.
