MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
As I look back on the 2023-2024 school year and my first year as Head of School, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to you, the members of this community, for your unwavering support of Chandler School. It was an extraordinary year full of time-honored traditions, cherished milestones and tremendous growth for our students, employees and alumni.
The impact of our collective generosity is illustrated in the 2023-2024 Gratitude Report. From your thoughtful participation in our fundraising programs and CFA events to assisting our teachers in the classroom, this community shows up for each other. Your support and kindness are the hallmarks of what makes Chandler School such a special place.
Our faculty and staff, who are the champions of our students, continue to be a guiding light. Our teachers care deeply about the children in their classroom, and they challenge them to reach ambitious learning goals. Moreover, they are committed to their craft, regularly participating in professional development opportunities, attending and presenting at conferences and modeling lifelong learning. Chandler employees nurture each student's strengths and utilize a differentiated approach to instruction to ensure the needs of every student are met.
It is my honor to lead our school community and I look forward to many more warm connections as we celebrate Chandler’s 75th Anniversary together.
Sincerely,

Emily Brown Head of School

Although the 2023-2024 school year may already feel like a distant memory, it’s always rewarding to reflect on what we accomplished together as a community. I want to take a moment to recognize the collective effort of the entire Chandler community in making a meaningful impact on the lives of our students. Faculty, staff, administration, parents, grandparents, friends, alumni, and trustees all played a crucial role in supporting our mission throughout the year. Thank you for your dedication and commitment.
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

A key milestone this year was the installation of Chandler School’s fifth Head of School, Emily Brown, and the successful completion of her first year in the role. It has been a privilege to work alongside someone as dedicated and talented as Emily. During her first year, we celebrated several significant achievements, including the completion of the Student-Centered Campus Redesign, the public launch of the WE ARE Chandler Campaign, the creation of the Leading Together Fund, and the strategic acquisition of two adjacent properties.
Beyond these incredible accomplishments, 2023-2024 saw:
• Continued efforts towards Chandler’s Strategic Plan, Leading Together
• Chandler’s Annual Fund hit 91% parent participation and raised over $1.3 million from all constituencies.
• Alumni participation remains strong with alumni engaged in school and alumni activities. This is a testament to the strength of Chandler’s Alumni Council and their commitment to inspire alums and their families to maintain a lifelong connection to the school.
• The WE ARE Chandler Campaign has $1,811,278.
• The highly successful Gala raised over $295,000. A big thank you to co-chairs Zoe Regan, Chika Roulet and Cristina Yamakawa for creating a wonderful celebration for the entire Chandler community. Thank you to CFA President Jenny Kaw for her fantastic leadership throughout the year.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2023-2024
This year has been bittersweet for me, as it marks my final year as Board President, a member of the Board of Trustees, and as a parent at Chandler School. My daughter graduated from 8th grade this June, completing her journey as a "lifer" at Chandler. Over the years, I’ve watched her grow academically, emotionally, and socially, and I am deeply grateful for the strong foundation Chandler has provided. As an alumna of Chandler myself, it has been especially meaningful to share so many of these experiences with her. As both she and I move on to new opportunities, we are excited about the future ahead.
What stands out to me is the unwavering dedication of Chandler’s faculty, staff, and administration. They are constantly focused on learning, growing, and adapting to meet the needs of our students. Despite Chandler’s rich history and legacy of academic excellence, the school has never stopped improving. With Emily Brown’s leadership I’m excited to see Chandler’s bright future unfold.
As we reflect on the 2023-2024 school year, we are deeply grateful to everyone in the Chandler community whose support is highlighted in this report. Our success is made possible by the continued involvement of our families and your steadfast support. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generosity and commitment to shaping the future of both our school and our students.

By setting the example for others, you inspire further contributions that will sustain Chandler’s growth and success, ensuring that our mission of academic excellence, character development, and service remains a guiding force for generations to come.
Established with a generous $500,000 lead gift from anonymous donors, this fund honors Chandler’s legacy of strong leadership, including past Heads of School and Emily Brown. It reflects the donors’ commitment to empowering our current head of school, ensuring she has the support needed to bring her vision to life. With built-in flexibility, the fund enables Chandler to adapt to evolving needs and advance its strategic goals.

Return of Field Trips!
ENRICHING HANDS-ON LEARNING IN LOWER SCHOOL
Field trips have made an exciting return to Chandler School, bringing back cherished experiences and introducing new ones to expand students' learning beyond the classroom. These trips offer handson opportunities to connect classroom concepts to real-world environments, fostering curiosity, collaboration and a deeper understanding of the world.

K indergarteners delighted in seasonal fun at Cal Poly Pomona’s Pumpkin Patch and engaged in interactive play-based learning at Kidspace Museum.
First graders explored sustainability and creativity at the reDiscover Center, another revived trip, while a new adventure to the Los Angeles Zoo introduced them to animal conservation and ecosystems.

Second graders enjoyed hands-on learning at Underwood Farms, where they deepened their understanding of agriculture and ventured to the California Science Center, experiencing exhibits that sparked their curiosity about science and technology.
In third grade, students reconnected with local history through a visit to the Chumash Museum, diving into Native American traditions and storytelling.

Fourth graders traveled to Sacramento, immersing themselves in California’s rich history and state government.

Fifth graders explored environmental science and sustainability with trips to Sarvodaya Farms and the California Science Center.

Field trips are a vital component of our curriculum, offering students transformative experiences that complement and enhance their classroom learning. As they explore farms, museums and historical sites, students develop problem-solving skills, grow their appreciation for the world around them, and deepen their love of learning. The return of these trips reflects our commitment to providing dynamic and engaging educational opportunities for every Chandler student.

the Impact of Chandler School
A CONVERSATION WITH DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS
DAN MCINERNY ’73 CHS ’77

At Chandler School, memories are not just moments but milestones in life’s journey. In a recent interview with Dan McInerny, ’73 CHS ’77, a successful entrepreneur and former athlete, the profound impact of Chandler School on personal and professional growth became vividly clear.
Dan reminisces about his early years at Chandler, describing it as more than a school—it was a second family. The nurturing yet challenging environment set the stage for a life guided by passion and purpose. His parents’ connection and friendship with the Chandlers inspired an award in his father’s name - the Robert T. McInerny Award for Outstanding School Service - a testament to the School’s lasting impact.
Reflecting on his time at Chandler School, Dan spoke fondly of teachers who shaped his academic and personal journey. Mr. Mac, Ms. Rose, Mr. Hill and Tom Chandler were not just educators but mentors who instilled a love for literature, language and sports. The School’s fields and lunchtime camaraderie created a sense of belonging that stayed with him.
Middle School at Chandler unfolded as a canvas of exploration. Dan’s love for science and the environment was expressed through camping trips and sports. Visits to JPL/ NASA sparked his curiosity, and playing multiple sports with friends fueled his competitive spirit.
Dan’s path to success intertwined with his love for baseball. From Blair to Berkeley, where he played and excelled, to being drafted by Cleveland, his journey blended athletics and academics. Joining Quiksilver marked a pivotal shift, leading to entrepreneurship and the creation of OluKai. OluKai has become one of the most successful footwear giants in the retail marketplace. Since its inception, OluKai has made a point of giving back to the community and supporting Hawaiian culture.
Central to Dan’s success were principles of integrity, trust and the Aloha spirit. Building a brand wasn’t just about products but about people and values. Meeting his wife, Suzy, through work and consulting for renowned brands like Patagonia reflected his commitment to quality and authenticity.

Dan’s leadership style mirrored his upbringing—grounded in empathy, communication and giving back. He emphasized the importance of mentorship, guiding his sons and leaving a legacy of integrity and environmental responsibility.
For Dan, personal fulfillment meant aligning passion with purpose, prioritizing family, and staying true to oneself amid life’s challenges. Work-life balance wasn’t a compromise but a conscious choice to nurture meaningful relationships and make a positive impact.
Dan had the opportunity to visit Chandler School in June to share his experiences with the next generation, his story resonates as a testament to the transformative power of education, community, and unwavering values.
“Chandler represents everything that’s good in life - it’s like coming home. It’s about the quality and character of the faculty and, most importantly, graduates like you, who go on to be amazing stewards in our community, making a difference in the world.”
Dan McInerny’s journey encapsulates the essence of Chandler School—a place where dreams take flight, values are nurtured and legacies are forged. Congratulations to Dan, 2024’s Distinguished Alumni.

Alumni Reunion & Family BBQ
On April 13, the Chandler community came together on campus for the Alumni Reunion and Family BBQ to connect with families, alumni, faculty and friends. The Class of 2014 reunited to open their time capsule and enjoy a blast from the past. The Class of 1974 also celebrated their 50 year reunion with a special anniversary dinner at Mijares, with longtime faculty Cathy Rose in attendance.

We welcomed back alumni in high school on February 3 for a special luncheon to reconnect with classmates and earn community service hours to benefit CFA’s Big Service Day and support local organizations.

Off to College Reunion Off to College Reunion

On May 3, alumni and parents of alumni of the class of 2020 reunited for their Off to College Reunion, enjoying a chance to reconnect with classmates, parents, faculty and administrators.
Alumni Visiting Week
Chandler’s Alumni Visiting Week brought a spark of inspiration to campus with alumni speakers returning to campus on April 10 and April 15 to share their unique journeys beyond Chandler. Through classroom visits, alumni connected directly with current students, offering a firsthand glimpse into how their Chandler foundation shaped their futures. From sharing career experiences to life lessons, alumni provided thoughtful perspectives that sparked curiosity and ambition among our students. This year, alumni experiences ranged from creating an engaging career in music to training guide dogs, from starting a nonprofit to working as a Michelin-starred pastry chef and more! The connections formed during these visits are a testament to the enduring strength of our Chandler community.

Founded in 1990, Partnership for Success (PFS) is a collaboration between the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) and four local independent schools—Chandler, Mayfield Junior, Polytechnic, and Westridge. Each summer, PFS offers an intensive, five-week academic enrichment program to over 400 Pasadena public-school students, starting from the summer after 4th grade through the summer after high school graduation. Notably, 100% of PFS graduates are accepted to college, and many return as program interns. With the generous support of those listed below, PFS continues to benefit hundreds of public-school students each year, offering extraordinary learning opportunities, authentic connections, and college access.
This transformative program is made possible through the generous support of our donors, whose contributions enable PFS to create extraordinary learning opportunities, foster meaningful connections, and ensure college access for hundreds of students each year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who make this impact possible.

Chandler School transformed into a cozy campground for the Camp Chandler, Read S’more Book Fair & Fall Festival
On Saturday, October 14, our community came together to celebrate the joy of reading and the great outdoors. Attendees tested their climbing skills on Mt. Shamrock, competed in Campfire Cupcakes, interacted with Camp Critters, and got creative at the Camp Crafts station. Campers were also able to meet their favorite authors, discovering a world of stories!

The Lower School Sports-A-Thon was a spectacle of athleticism and spirit this past spring. This beloved event has evolved into a highlight of spring, fostering a dynamic athletic program. The campus is abuzz with excitement, from students sprinting the 50-yard dash to leaping for new personal bests in the high jump. Beyond physical feats, the event celebrates sportsmanship and joy, where every participant, reluctant or eager, discovers the thrill of competition and the pride of surpassing their limits.

On May 4, 2024 at the iconic Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Downtown Los Angeles, the Chandler community gathered for the Chandler in Bloom Gala. Led by Gala Chairs Zoe Regan, Chika Roulet and Cristina Yamakawa, and supported by a dedicated team of parent volunteers, the Gala raised essential funds for the school, students and faculty while highlighting the vibrant community spirit that defines Chandler School. Symbolizing Chandler’s enduring leadership and growth as it nears its 75th anniversary and beyond, the Gala exemplified the school’s commitment to excellence and innovation that has been a hallmark of Chandler School.

Join us at the “Shine Bright” Family Fair, celebrating Chandler School’s 75th Diamond Anniversary. Get ready for a day of fun, festivities, and reconnections as we kick off our 75th Anniversary celebrations. We’re inviting all alumni back to campus, especially those celebrating milestone reunions from the Classes of 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005. We can’t wait to celebrate Chandler with you and relive your Chandler memories. We hope to see you there!

IN MEMORY OF

It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of longtime Chandler teacher, Will Salmon, who passed away in June 2024. Mr. Salmon dedicated 27 years to teaching music at Chandler, inspiring students with his boundless creativity and passion for musical expression. In retirement, he proudly served on the Chandler School Alumni Council, continuing to nurture connections between alumni and the school.
Head of School Emily Brown shared, “Will was one of the first teachers to welcome me into his classroom when I started at Chandler. He regularly led students to their music classes while playing his recorder, and he invited anyone eager to sing, dance and create to jump into line and join the fun. A dedicated educator and dear friend to everyone at Chandler, he will be missed.”
In May 2024, the Performing Arts Award was named to honor Mr. Salmon’s enduring legacy, by his friend and colleague Brandi Williams-Moore, Performing Arts Chair.
The Will Salmon Performing Arts Award recognizes students who embody the passion, dedication, artistic expression and collaboration exemplified by Mr. Salmon during his time at Chandler.

Brandi Williams-Moore shared, “Will was not just a colleague; he was a mentor, a friend and an inspiration to everyone who had the opportunity to work with him. Whether as a singer, actor, composer, dancer, puppet maker, clown or public speaker, Will sought to cultivate and inspire the love of creativity in all his students, and every collaboration with him was pure joy. Let us all honor Will by continuing to share the music and love he generously gave to us all.”
“Will saw the artist, the musician, the actor in every student. Thanks to him, students found their voices.”
-Former Head of School John Finch
