How do you and your sales team ensure sales satisfaction in the New vehicle and Pre-owned vehicle departments at Audi Centre Umhlanga?
Sales Satisfaction, or Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) as it more commonly known in the motor industry today, is of utmost importance in our dealership. It is a topic that the entire team at Audi Centre Umhlanga understands extremely well. Since customer expectations develop and change with time, it is our responsibility to ensure that we stay well informed of these changes and developments, and incorporate those into our internal systems or processes in order to serve our customers better. Our customer satisfaction is measured by an independent research agency that contacts all Audi customers nationally to determine their satisfaction with the product, brand and sales experience at the dealership. We are extremely proud to say that for the last three months our New Vehicle Sales Department under the guidance of our New Sales Manager, Wayne Maybery, Audi Centre Umhlanga, was rated number one countrywide when it came to customer delight. So we certainly know how to look after our customers. Our Pre-owned Department, under the guidance of our Pre-owned Manager Sibusiso Chiliza, scores are not far behind that of the New vehicle departments. basics right the first time around. With the sale of a New or Pre-Owned Audi, the responsibility remains with us to ensure that we give our customers the best Audi experience possible.
How do you stay focussed and keep your team positive-minded in a time that is quite challenging due to the international economic instability?
The International economic instability certainly has a spinoff on our local South African market; however I believe that it is not healthy to completely fixate on the negative impacts on our business. Ultimately the international business factors at play are something we have little or no control over. To remain focussed and to keep our staff as motivated as possible, we concentrate on the factors that we have control over in our business. We have complete control over the interaction we have with every customer, let’s focus on making THAT a memorable experience that will assist us in retaining customers. We have control over the effort that we put into our Marketing activities; we have control over the sales activities we generate through our Marketing activities; so again let’s control these where the result will directly have an influence over our daily business. The key here is to become self-motivated from within, and to motivate others. EVERY SINGLE DAY. As dealer management we are responsible for switching the attitude and staff morale “on” when we get to work, and to invest in our internal business relationships on a daily basis. My thoughts are that we have to almost become obsessed with positive thinking. A great and inspirational motivator, Robin Sharma says: “Until your mission is an obsession, nothing will change in your life”.
Audi has a very attractive product range and aims to delight customers of all ages and social brackets with their sporty, high quality and innovative vehicles. The New Audi S and RS models have landed in South Africa as well as the Audi S3 Sportback and Audi SQ5 TDI. What is unique about these S and RS models?
Audi South Africa has certainly worked extremely hard to provide us with this amazing line-up of vehicles we enjoy in our showrooms today, particularly the sporty S & RS range of vehicles. These spoty models bring together what can only be described as the epitome of what an Audi vehicle could be.
We have been extremely blessed to see vehicles such as the S3, RSQ3, RS4 Avant, SQ5, RS5 Coupe and Cabriolet, as well as the most recent performance topping 412KW RS7. There are a few more performance models being lined up for the year ahead, so keep an eye on the showroom of Audi Centre Umhlanga as we will ensure that we have these exhilarating vehicles on display.
Jaco, you are well-known in the motor vehicle industry, what is your vision and new strategy for 2014 for Audi Centre Umhlanga?
Until I joined Audi Centre Umhlanga recently, the dealership did not have a complete management team. Now that we have a stable and solid team of highly motivated people in place, we have started to set some renewed goals. Our long term vision is to eventually become the Audi dealership of choice in the greater Durban area. However, in order to start building towards this dream we had to revisit the drawing board to establish where our strengths are and where our areas of opportunity lie within our dealership. People are key in any organisation, and it is certainly no different in ours. Our aim is to invest in the growth of our existing employees, and to ensure that we nurture and grow them to realise their true potential.
What drives Jaco Boyens as a Dealer Principal of Audi Centre Umhlanga with a staff compliment of 67?
I am driven by achievement, whether it be a tiny or a great achievement, both personally and in business. Achievement means progress, and where there is progress in place means that we are busy evolving and changing into something or someone greater then what we were the day before.
Where do you see the Audi brand in South in the next five years?
Audi as a brand is evolving into something far greater than ever before. Audi is focussing on growth in every aspect of their market, and is currently the fastest growing premium vehicle brand in South Africa. We read for various reasons. A basic ability allows one to read road signs and to fill in forms after reading the requirements. Next comes the need to read for study purposes. To pass those exams and gain knowledge that will lead to employment. The more one reads and studies, the better the position and the pay! One may also read to extend one’s knowledge – there is so much happening in the world these days. Things are changing at an enormous speed. Here-say is best backed up with researched knowledge. Even then, one has to make up one’s mind as to the truth of what one reads. So reading helps a person to develop a critical mind. To weigh up the pros and cons. It is also of vital importance when voting and choosing who one would like to lead the country. In the early days, that was why newspapers developed. To give the common man the facts so that he or she could make an educated decision. Of course, today, newspapers each have their own particular slant of how they want to tip decisions that people make. Headlines of newspapers give an indication of the team behind those headlines. Whether it is sensation that the management are creating to make sales, or whether they are as genuine in giving the facts as they seem to be. Strangely, the same scene viewed by several different people will all have very different stories which each one swears is the truth! Readers then have to be careful not to be swayed by popular media to believe something that may not be true. All this comes into the need to be able to read, and then to see the truth in whatever is written. Another reason for reading is for the pure fantasy that appears on the pages. A story that takes one’s mind to sunshiny places of peace and joy may help a harassed business man after a particularly hard day. I have read too, that after many years of deep study of heavy disciplines that the best thing a person could do is to make a study of Shakespeare. People then also read for the pure delight of words that create beautiful pictures In our minds. Take the poem by William Allingham that reads : Up the airy mountain Down the rushy glen I daren’t go a hunting For fear of little men These few lines become everlasting. “Airy mountain” has a connotation of a million more words than those two words. What about the “rushy glen?” Do you know what a rushy glen is? I don’t but that doesn’t detract from the pure delight one feels as one reads those few words. Other stories, like the Hobbit, Winnie the Pooh, Vampires, and The Little Prince on a far away planet absorb and entertain us. They also get us thinking beyond the triteness of everyday life. Is there really life on the moon? Are there other galaxies that are civilised, maybe more civilised than we are? Are people really going to leave for Mars and never come back? Are there ways to solve the problems of mankind? Words are also our wands. Words can uplift people and make them want to work harder, try to do better, be more compassionate, more helpful, to create a better world. To make a positive Change.

LEGALLY SPEAKING How Attorneys Fees Work? Have you ever received a bill from an attorney and it caught you by surprise but not in a good way. An attorney is entitled to charge his client a fair and reasonable fee for the work that he does. What is fair and reasonable may be determined by a number of factors such as the urgency of the matter, the level of difficulty of the work and expertise required in a particular matter, the amount of money involved or the importance of the matter. In litigation matters where there are two parties involved, the one person might end up having to pay the other person's costs. Here we have a distinction between party and party costs and attorney and client costs. When a court case is finished, the successful party draws up a Bill of Costs according to a tariff and sends it to the unsuccessful party and to the Taxing Master of the particular Court where the case was heard. The amount so assessed is the party and party bill and that is the amount that the unsuccessful party must pay. However, you as the successful party may have to pay your own attorney more than the amount that you recover from the other side for example telephone calls you made to your attorney every day and chatted to him about the matter for half an hour. He is entitled to charge you for each and every telephone call. The difference can be regarded as attorney and client costs which you must pay to your attorney but can't recover from your opponent. Most firms of attorneys have their own office tariff for work where there is no prescribed tariff that they can apply. Generally such a tariff would work on an hourly rate for consultations, a rate for telephone calls, a rate for drafting and drawing documents per page and a rate for perusing and considering documents. Sometimes an attorney is limited to charge a specific tariff and generally he may not charge anything more or less than the laid down tariff. Examples of tariff charges are:• Conveyancing matters (where property is transferred from one person to another) where the attorney's charges depend on the price of the property; • Insolvencies & deceased estates where the attorney is entitled to charge a percentage of the value of the assets as at the date of insolvency or of death. A client is entitled to contact the local Law Society to assess his bill from his attorney if he is of the opinion that the fee charged is excessive. The Law Society assesses the bill at no cost and the attorney will be bound to reduce his fee if the Law Society finds that the attorney has overreached.

Apple’s Driving Force Apple Launches “the Best iPhone Experience on four Wheels” Apple has taken a significant step forward in its plan to become a regular presence in cars, rebranding its initiative for iPhone-powered dashboards as CarPlay. Originally launched as iOS in the Car at the 2013 developers’ conference, CarPlay will allow users to browse music, navigate maps and make calls using an iOS 7-like user interface. Apple is calling it “the best iPhone experience on four wheels” and has announced that their first manufacturers to build it into their vehicles will be Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari. CarPlay (a name that puts the technology in line with AirPlay – Apple’s media streaming software) will primarily use Siri’s voice command functionality to make the software an “eye free experience”. Users will be able to dictate text messages or navigate their contacts using their voice, and Apple say that the software is also predictive, looking at your calendar and email to anticipate upcoming meetings and suggest directions. Third-party apps form the likes of Spotify and IHeartRadio will also be available, although the software requires a lightning connector – meaning that only the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C are compatible. Smartphones will also provide the processing power, with the display itself simply a touch-screen. Apple says that they have 13 more manufacturers lined up to integrate CarPlay into their vehicles, with the names covering a broad range of the market, including BMW, Ford, Kia, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota and Jaguar. The news means that Apple vs Google fight is going to spill over from smartphones and tablets onto the automotive industry. In January this year the search giant launched its own initiative, the Open Automotive Alliance, which aims to put the Android operating system in cars around the world. Google launched the alliance with General Motors, Audi, Honda, Hyundai and chip-makers Nvidia, planning to release the first cars by the end of 2014. - The Independent

We’ve all been through this decision – going on holiday to an area with a low-medium risk of malaria. Should we or shouldn’t we take prophylaxis? The preventative medication alone does have its own barrage of side effects and the duration!!! – 1 week before, during the journey and up to 2 weeks after. The choice seems simple… However, the statistics are scary. In 2010, 219 million cases of malaria were reported with 660 000 deaths - 91% in Africa. Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite that infects the Anopheles mosquito which feeds on humans. The commonest cause for the serious to fatal outcomes is the Plasmodium falciparum parasite. Pregnant women, children under 5 and immunosuppressed indivduals are most at risk. Symptoms can appear after an incubation period of 7-20 days after being bitten. These symptoms can initially be flu-like with fever, chills, headaches, sweats, body aches, nausea and vomiting. The high swinging temperature that occurs every 2-3 days is often a diagnostic tool. Complicated cases of malaria may present with multi-organ failure or, in the case of cerebral malaria, CNS symptoms of epilepsy, confusion, coma. The diagnosis of malaria is only made after microscopically visualising the parasite in the blood stream. Treatment depends on the severity of the infection and uses a number of drugs either individually or in combination – depending on the resistance profile of the parasite. These drugs include chloroquine, quinine, mefloquine, artemisinin combination therapy, to name a few. Prevention … prevention ... prevention… is the key. This would include being well informed about the area to which you are travelling – trying at best to avoid high risk areas. Covering exposed skin, using mosquito repellants and nets to prevent being bitten. Using drug prophylaxis, if required. Please see ur doctor should you develop flu-like symptoms after travelling to a possible malaria zone.

Natalie Rungan Launches her New CD
Heart Aflame, which is an 11-track album, has been written, arranged and produced by Natalie Rungan. At the start of 2013 the singer songwriter spent a lot of time thinking about the direction she wanted her music to take. Having previously done two albums, “Love Is” and “This is Me”, Natalie decided to go out on her own as an independent recording artist. The songstress felt the need to be more transparent both in her writing as well as her performances. This took much thought and careful consideration not to stray too far from the profile already established. A year later she penned this new album, which is an expression of her journey over the past two years. Rungan came up with the idea of Up Close and Personal (UCP)© which is concept that is all about how the audience feels while they are taken through this musical journey. She wrote new compositions for the concert, which were different in style and lyrical content and based on its
HEART AFLAME success decided that she wanted to share them with fans both nationally and those abroad. It was Natalie’s desire that “Heart Aflame” would capture the energy and synergy that she had on stage with her band each time they performed.
For the concept to work the artist had to have musicians with her that would follow her every move, that could read her like a book. Natalie certainly has that with her long time friend and keyboardist Mark Royeppen who over the years has learnt to predict Natalie’s musical heartbeat. The final and certainly most crucial member in bringing this concept to life, is drummer extraordinaire Bruce Baker. He introduced a reduced drum set that is centered on a percussion instrument the ‘Cajon’ featured on “Come Dance”. Bruce’s incorporation of drums and percussion, together with his in-depth knowledge of rhythm, perfectly balances the trio. Natalie, Mark and Bruce went into
studio and recorded these eleven songs live. The process of making an album like this is both exhilarating and a little daunting, as songs have to be performed perfectly from start to finish. There are no overdubs and tweaks like one could have in a programmed album. As the listener hears it, is exactly how it happened in studio. It took hours of planning and practicing before going in to track the album but a year later the final product is one that Natalie is very proud of. Joining the trio on “Africa” and “Come Dance” is Ian Alexander Reid; an acclaimed bass player, and dear friend of Natalie’s, who is based in London. Brent Quinton, owner of Hit Record Studios who engineered the album, also features on guitar on “Love began when you smiled”. For the very first time Natalie has been able to credit someone other than herself for lyrical content on one of her songs. Media and radio personality Alan Khan co wrote the lyrics to “I still remember” which is inspired by a prose written to his wife.

Westville Girls’ High Celebrates their 50th Anniversary with a Magical Trip into the World of OZ was brilliant and was great for the whole family. Over 100 girls contributed to this production and put their blood, sweat and tears into creating a phenomenal show. Special thanks to the Westville Girls’ drama department, Claire Spinelli, Roxanne Fuller and Chelsea-Rae Martin. As well as involvement from exterior professionals Evan Robins

Cancer-Fighting Culinary Spices and Herbs Ginger Ginger has long been used in folk medicine to treat everything from colds to constipation. Ginger can be used fresh, in powdered form (ginger spice), or candied. Although the flavor between fresh and ground ginger is significantly different, they can be substituted for one another in many recipes. In general, you can replace 1/8 teaspoon of ground ginger with 1 tablespoon of fresh grated ginger, and vice versa. Consuming ginger and ginger products, in addition to taking any anti-nausea medications as prescribed, may provide some comfort for a queasy stomach during cancer treatment.
Rosemary Rosemary is a hearty, woody Mediterranean herb that has needlelike leaves and is a good source of antioxidants. Because of its origin, rosemary is commonly used in Mediterranean cooking and you’ll often see it included as a primary ingredient in Italian seasonings. You can use it to add flavor to soups, tomato-based sauces, bread, and high-protein foods like poultry, beef, and lamb. Rosemary may help with detoxification; taste changes; indigestion, flatulence, and other digestive problems; and loss of appetite. Try drinking up to 3 cups of rosemary leaf tea daily for help with these problems.
Turmeric Turmeric is an herb in the ginger family; it's one of the ingredients that make many curries yellow and gives it its distinctive flavor.
Curcumin appears to be the active compound in turmeric. This compound has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially protecting against cancer development. Turmeric extract supplements are currently being studied to see if they have a role in preventing and treating some cancers, including colon, prostate, breast, and skin cancers.
Chile Peppers Chile peppers contain capsaicin, a compound that can relieve pain. When capsaicin is applied topically to the skin, it causes the release of a chemical called substance P. Upon continued use, the amount of substance P eventually produced in that area decreases, reducing pain in the area.If you have pain and want to harness the power of chile peppers, ask your oncologist or physician about prescribing a capsaicin cream. It has shown pretty good results with regard to treating neuropathic pain (sharp, shocking pain that follows the path of a nerve) after surgery for cancer.
Garlic Garlic belongs to the Allium class of bulb-shaped plants, which also includes chives, leeks, onions, shallots, and scallions. Garlic has a high sulfur content and is also a good source of arginine, oligosaccharides, flavonoids, and selenium, all of which may be beneficial to health. Garlic’s active compound, called allicin, gives it its characteristic odor and is produced
when garlic bulbs are chopped, crushed, or otherwise damaged. Several studies suggest that increased garlic intake reduces the risk of cancers of the stomach, colon, esophagus, pancreas, and breast. It appears that garlic may protect against cancer through numerous mechanisms, including by inhibiting bacterial infections and the formation of cancer-causing substances, promoting DNA repair, and inducing cell death. Garlic supports detoxification and may also support the immune system and help reduce blood pressure.
Peppermint Peppermint is a natural hybrid cross between water mint and spearmint. It has been used for thousands of years as a digestive aid to relieve gas, indigestion, cramps, and diarrhea. It may also help with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and food poisoning. Peppermint appears to calm the muscles of the stomach and improve the flow of bile, enabling food to pass through the stomach more quickly. If your cancer or treatment is causing an upset stomach, try drinking a cup of peppermint tea. Many commercial varieties are on the market, or you can make your own by boiling dried peppermint leaves in water or adding fresh leaves to boiled water and letting them steep for a few minutes until the tea reaches the desired strength. Peppermint can also soothe a sore throat. For this reason, it is also sometimes used to relieve the painful mouth sores that can occur from chemotherapy and radiation, or is a key ingredient in treatments for this condition.

Celebrate Easter this year with a traditional Easter lunch with lamb, roasted potatoes and creamed spinach with feta. This show-stopping menu brings fresh flavors to the table. Best of all, the dishes can all be started in advance.

Creamed Spinach & Feta, 30g Butter, 1 onion, finely diced 1 garlic clove, crushed, 400g baby spinach leaves, wilted 100g Feta Cheese, crumbled
• 8 large unpeeled garlic cloves, divided • 1/2 cup fresh Coriander • 1/2 cup fresh Mint • salt to taste • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 tablespoon freshly ground cumin powder • 1/2 cup of Olive Oil • 2-3 kg boneless leg of lamb, trimmed and tied • 2kg small unpeeled potatoes • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

30g Butter, 20g flour, 1/2 cup (125ml) Fresh Full Cream Milk, hot cup (60ml) Fresh Cream, warm salt and black pepper
To make the Sauce

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Place the oven rack in the lower third of the oven so the lamb will sit in the middle of the oven. Peel 6 of the cloves of garlic and place them in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Add the coriander, mint, salt, pepper, cumin and Olive oil. Process until the garlic, coriander and mint are finely minced. Thoroughly spread the mixture onto the flat deboned lamb. Roll the lamb using butcher's twine to tie it together and place it on the prepared roasting pan. Allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Toss the potatoes and remaining unpeeled garlic in a bowl with

the olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place in the bottom of a large roasting pan. Place the lamb on top of the potatoes and roast for 2 hours, Remove from the oven and put the lamb on a platter; cover tightly with aluminium foil. Allow the lamb to rest for about 20 minutes. Slice and serve with the potatoes.

Heat the butter in a pan. Whisk in the flour and cook for a minute. Whisk in the hot milk and cook for 3 minutes. Add the cream and stir. Season with salt and pepper.

Heat the butter in a pan over a low heat, cook the onion and garlic for 3–4 minutes or until softened. Finely slice the drained and dried wilted spinach. Stir in the spinach, cook for one minute and add the feta cheese and white sauce while stirring to combine.

The vast mass of knowledge in the world can only be gained by reading, and if you want your children to be smart, they have to acquire a love for reading. The love of reading has so many benefits. You can develop this reading habit in your children in as early as their first few months by reading to them. Many studies have demonstrated that reading to children has many positive effects. For example, a study was made in Rhode Island Hospital to compare two groups of eight months old – one group was read to often as babies, while the other was not. It was shown that those who were read to have their “receptive” vocabularies (number of words they understand) increased 40 per cent since babyhood, while the non-reading group increased by only 16 per cent. Indeed, reading to your children is one of the most effective way of building the “language” neural connections in their growing brains. When you read with your child, he derives these benefits: • Reading to your kid makes you bond with him, and this gives your child a sense of intimacy and well-being. This feeling of intimacy will not only make your child feel close to you, the feeling of being loved and getting attention also
helps him to grow smart. • The intimacy of reading to your kid is such a pleasurable experience to him that he will have a positive attitude towards reading as he grows up. • It calms your child, especially when he is fretful and restless. • It promotes increased communication between you and your child. • Preschool children who are exposed to language by hearing words that are read to him and in conversation tend to do well in school. • Many studies show that students who love learning and do well in school were exposed to reading before preschool. • Your baby learns early the basics of reading a book, that words represent sounds and concepts, words are read from left to write, and stories continue when you flip the page. • It promotes longer attention span, which is an important skill for your kid to be able to concentrate. • It builds listening skills and creative imagination. • Your young child learns about colours, shapes, numbers, and letters, while your older child discovers an expanding chain of knowledge. His interest in cars, for example, will expand to his interest in trucks, and other transportation like planes and rockets, and soon he will be reading about outer space, science and technology, and so forth.
• A study published in Perspectives on Psychological Science in January 2013 concluded that “reading to a child in an interactive style raises his or her IQ by over 6 points.” • Books teach your child thinking skills early. When you read to your child, he learns to understand cause and effect, he learns to exercise logic, as well as think in abstract terms. He learns the consequences of actions, and the basics of what is right and wrong. • Books teach your child about relationships, situations, personalities, and what is good and what is bad in the world he lives in. Fantasy books provide material for his imagination and free play. Fairy tales fascinate your kid, and help him distinguish between what is real and what is not. • When your child reaches a new stage in his growth, or experiences a new and unfamiliar situation, reading to your child about a story relevant to his new experience can relieve his anxiety and help him cope. For example, if your child is stressed about his first day in school, or about moving to a new location, you can read a book to him that shows that these should not be painful experiences. • Your child learns early that reading is fun and not a chore. When your child grows up, you will not be stressed about getting him to read, as reading has become, for him, a pleasurable habit.

5 Things Great Entrepreneurs Know Leadership is not in your DNA. There is no genetic code for becoming a chief executive or a business owner. We’re all born with a clean slate, more or less. What happens next – your childhood, your upbringing, your education, your experience, your behaviour, the choices you make – determines what you become. And what you make of yourself. It might surprise you to know that growing up with nothing does not diminish your chances of accomplishing great things in your life. On the contrary, growing up with adversity, in a competitive environment, can have a positive impact on your career. It all depends on how you use that experience. So how about we throw out all the conventional wisdom and popular myths about where leaders and entrepreneurs come from and focus on what really matters: the things you have control over today that can really make a difference in what you achieve going forward. While there is no common blueprint for success, there are common themes I see again and again in those who do exceptionally well. Here are seven things that, in my experience, every great entrepreneur knows. Most importantly, they’re all within your reach. There is no four-hour – or 40hour – work week. You get out of life what you put in. There are no shortcuts to success.
There’s no fad, no silver bullet, no miracle pill that will help you achieve great things without working your tail off. Period. How to focus. The first rule of a start up is to focus. First you focus on coming up with a breakthrough concept. Then you focus on demonstrating it. Then you focus on delivering it and gaining customer traction. Then you focus on scaling the business. Focus is how things get done. If you can’t focus on what matters and shut out the noise, better not quit your day job. Follow Your Heart. We spend a good part of our lives trying to find ourselves and figure out what we want to do for a living. That comes with the territory. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. You’ll know it when you find it. It’s important you do because that’s when you’ll have the opportunity to do great things. How to influence others. Great entrepreneurs are passionate about their work. There’s always something they need to prove or achieve. It’s that sort of desperate obsession that drives them and motivates others. It’s instinctive and contagious. Leadership characteristics, emotional intelligence, extravert/ introvert, employee engagement – you can save all that for later or, better still, never. How business works. They’re not born with the knowledge, but at some point,
every great entrepreneur learns how business works. Capitalization, P&L, sales, customers, relationships, negotiations – if that scares you, welcome to the big leagues. You can maybe delegate some of it, but you still have to understand it first. There’s a line from Star Wars that really resonated with me: “The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.” I’ve seen dozens of executives and entrepreneurs surround themselves with sugar coating, self-serving yes-men and indulge in groupthink. Sooner or later, it always takes them down. There’s no reward without risk. Everyone calls themselves an entrepreneur these days, but if you’re not risking anything, you’re no entrepreneur. If you want to be successful on your own, at some point, you have to cut the cord. If there were an easier or safer way, everyone would do it. I’m telling you, there isn’t. Truth is, entrepreneurship isn’t really a “dip your toe in the water and see how it feels” sort of endeavour. If you’re not willing to go all in, you might consider getting a real job. But if you think you’ve got what it takes, these are pretty fundamental concepts you should strive to understand and embrace. by Steve Tobak

is a registered not-for-profit organization that falls under the NGO umbrella of “Likhon iThemba” which means, “There is Hope.” HOLAH has been in operation since June 2012 and was formerly known as the Durban North Baby House. HOLAH is a safe-haven that exists to love and care for the babies placed in the care of care until they can be placed with adoptive families. The babies that come to HOLAH have either
been abandoned, orphaned, given up for adoption or removed from their parents care. I admit that the Samsung S5 is definitely a great smartphone with some good features. The Samsung S5 has seemed to taken a new aesthetic appeal with a perforated pattern that is rather unique. They also have a heart rate sensor and they are the first smartphone to have this built in which is fantastic; promoting a healthier lifestyle. Then there’s my favourite, the finger scanner. It’s such an innovative smart idea if Samsung had thought of it first, because I’m pretty sure that was the main feature on the iPhone 5. The Samsung S5 is a smartphone that appeals to the need of the Change Generation.

Get Drumming If your kid’s the musical-type (or if you just need some musical therapy) you can do worse than taking part in a djembe drumming circle. Train Your Dog to Be Good with Kids
Learn how to ensure your pet peacefully coexists with the people you love. Never leave children and dogs unattended. People often forget that their family dog is an animal and animals do not have a moral compass. Kids should never touch a sleeping, sick, eating, strange or mommy dog. Parents often expect dogs to simply deal with kids pulling their ears and tails or taunting them. Children should be taught to respect the dog and give it space. Create kid-free zones: Family dogs should have a kid-free zone to go to if they want space. Crates provide a separate area for the dog to be alone. Don't view it as punishment. The crate is a safe refuge, especially when the house is filled with relatives and strange noises. Establish house rules: The family should never allow rough play with the dog. Burckhalter also suggests distributing food and treats away from the child. Do not allow the dog to eat from the child's plate or play with the child's toys. Kids also should not play with pet toys; they lack the same safety standards. Train and socialize the dog: Burckhalter shared a terrible tragedy that occurred in her neighborhood. A child was mauled by a dog that had spent its life tied up outside. Children screaming and running past had caused years of pent-up frustration in a
dog that already lacked proper social skills. When the chain finally broke, Burckhalter said, frustration turned into attack. The dog was euthanized and the child spent months in the hospital. All dogs should be trained to handle various distractions such as children, small animals and bicycles. During the weekly pit bull training sessions, Burckhalter uses an air horn, funny hats and other distractions to test dogs’ concentration. Enroll your dog in obedience training and make it a family affair. The Kennel Club also offers a Canine Good Citizen certification program for well-behaved dogs. It can be a valuable asset for dogs and owners, who qualify for lower homeowners’ insurance rates. Also, involve children in positive training methods as much as possible. Make sure the breed fits your lifestyle: Research the type of dog you have and respect those instincts, she said. Understanding the traits of a breed will help you become a better pet owner. Without long daily walks to help burn all that extra energy, dogs becomes bored and destructive. Be honest with yourself about the dog's needs and whether you can meet them. Get your dog spayed or neutered: Most dog attacks come from unaltered males, Burckhalter said. Get your dog spayed as soon
as possible. The SPCA offers a database of free or low-cost spay/ neuter options around the country. Teach kids to ignore stray dogs: Remind kids that every dog is not friendly. If a dog approaches while they are walking to school, kids should not make eye contact or try to run. Instead, they should stand still (like a tree) until the dog loses interest and walks away. If kids are on the ground when a stray approaches, they should curl up into a ball and cover their head until the dog passes. New parents, help dogs prepare for the baby: • Make any lifestyle changes before the baby arrives. If your dog requires long walks, start doggie daycare as an outlet for exercise. Establish a no-furniture rule and enforce it. Install baby gates well before duty calls and you have to stumble out of bed at 2 a.m. for a diaper change. • Get the dog acclimated to baby sounds and scents. Let your dog smell the baby’s blanket and other gear. Set up the pack 'n' play and car seat weeks early. • Make the baby’s room a dog-free zone. • Start obedience training. Be honest about whether your dog is good with children. If your dog does not like children, Burckhalter said, you should find her a new home.
