Letters to theEditor Talking Change

Hello ChangeNOW Supporters

Thank You .. .Thank You ... Thank You.

Thank you to Caring Ladies of the Sunflower Fund for embracing our October Cover. You, are certainly Changing Lives. Keep up the great work you do. At this time, there is just so much going on and there is constant focus on the ongoing negativity that is surrounding us by the poor economic crisis that the world is facing and we see the changes reflected all around. In this issue we have brought you many editorials on staying focused with the power of positive thinking and believing, that could bring about a change in your life. Firstly, take care of you, have a plan, work hard, carve out time to do things you enjoy each day and most of all choose to believe that change is your choice. As I have said previously, ChangeNew is all about making positive change in your life. This month we are so privileged to have Dr Rakesh Mohanlall to grace the front cover of our November edition. I was really intrigued by Dr Mohanlall’s non-surgical outpatient treatment for patients suffering primarily from coronary artery disease and heart failure, that we had to feature him, so that you can gain insight into this phenomenal alternate cardiovascular treatment. This is a must read for all. We had the great privledge of meeting the wonderful celebrity Chefs for the Good Food & Wine Press party held at the Tsogo Sun Elangeni & Maharani Hotel. Congrats to executive Chef, Shaun Monroe and his team for the lavish spread of fine cuisine. A special thanks to all our readers who participated in our promotions, due to the overwhelming response, ChangeNow magazine had given away over 150 tickets to the Good Food & Wine Show.

Be Safe & Believe in YOU! Publisher - Raj Maree

For the tickets to the Good Food and Wine Show and for the amazing content which is so uplifting. My family and I really enjoy the magazine and look forward to it every month. We love the Buzz Around Town feature and the recipes too. Well done to you and your team Michael Sigamoney - Durban North

Dear Editor,

Thank you for a great quality magazine. I have yet to see such a great quality magazine that is free to readers. We are so fortunate to have such a fine quality magazine in Durban. Your articles make for very interesting read. We trust and hope that you grow from strength to strength, as people cannot afford to buy magazines these days and we love to read a hard copy magazine and not read a magazine online, where the connection is lost. Thanks Again! Lyla Barnes – Westville

Hi Tasha,

Thank you for your teen section. I do enjoy reading your articles and I follow you on twitter. I am more inspired by you after recently being informed that you are still in high school. Wow! Ashmika Maharaj - Chatsworth

Dr Rakesh Mohanlall Cardiovascular Perfusionist Bringing Healthy Change one Heart Beat at a Time.

Cover Photos by Kevin Hsu Photography • 084 655 5668

Dr Rakesh Mohanlall

Umhlanga Cardiovascular Perfusionist, Dr Rakesh Mohanlall has overcome many challenges and adversities in his career but through his passion and perseverance to succeed he is now an expert in the field of non-invasive cardiac diagnosis and treatment. Dr Mohanlall houses the only noninvasive diagnostic devise in Africa that is used for early detection and management of coronary artery disease and he has pioneered and established the only External Conterpulsation (ECP) centre in South Africa that is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and accredited as a satellite training unit . Dr Rakesh Mohanlall is a Clinical Technologist, specializing in cardiovascular perfusion and holds 19 years of experience in his field. He was part of the heart bypass team in South Africa before he went abroad to Saudi Arabia and headed the perfusion department. There he was involved in various research and studies with international cardiologists and surgeons where he gained a vast array of knowledge on the latest techniques of cardiac rehabilitation. He completed his masters research through DUT and became the first perfusionist to attain a doctorate in this field after his masters was converted. He returned to South Africa in 2008 and after having been a part of the bypass team for many years and witnessing the difficulties that cardiac

patients experienced, he explored alternate non-invasive treatments that could benefit patients and give them a better quality of life. After extensive research and training, in 2010 together with a team made up of clinical technologists, a cardiothoracic surgeon, a hospital manager and renal physician, he opened the doors to ECP.

Vasculography (3DVG) diagnostic device Dr Mohanlall said, "Two years after starting ECP, I realized that we still needed a reliable diagnostic assessment that would provide sufficient information on a patient in order to get the best outcomes. After thorough research and training abroad, I landed the device in Africa. "

ECP is commonly known as a 'Natural Heart Bypass' and is a treatment for patients suffering from coronary artery disease and heart failure. It is FDA indicated for Angina; Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack); Congestive heart failure and Cardiogenic shock. The treatment results in the improvement of blood circulation by opening dormant arteries around the heart and thus reducing workload on the heart and symptoms of tiredness, chest pains, shortness of breath and exercise intolerance. A typical course of ECP is 35 one-hour treatments, done Monday to Friday. Clinical studies have shown that most patients treated with a single course of ECP experience a reduction in angina and are able to return to an active lifestyle.

The 3DVG assessment covers the kidney, lung and cardiac function in a 23 page report. It can measure a patient’s risk factors of having a heart attack. It shows 3 dimensional pictures of the heart and measures coronary artery blood flow in the heart. It measures up to 64 different parameters in the body and it is the only non-invasive diagnostic assessment tool available in the world that can establish early detection of coronary artery disease, even before symptoms present.

Commenting on his journey to establish ECP in South Africa Dr Mohanlall said, "ECP has given cardiac patients a welcomed relief to their pains and sufferings. Like with anything else, bringing something new into the country and getting people to appreciate it was a difficult task. Although ECP has been practised throughout the world for decades, it was still unheard of in South Africa. It has taken us 27 to bring ECP to South Africa years, after Professor Zheng had perfected the treatment. Nevertheless my team and I have worked hard on this project and persevered with it. We now have also managed to successfully get over 25 medical aid schemes that pay for ECP only under my practice." adds Dr Mohanlall Commenting further on the introduction of the 3 Dimensional

"We have now completed this diagnostic on hundreds of patients, many of whom were unable to get a diagnosis on existing diagnostics even though they were symptomatic. The 3DVG assessment has brought us patients from various parts of the globe and we have had the pleasure of even treating diplomats from outside South Africa," says Dr Mohanlall. Earlier this year Dr Mohanlall had the honour of presenting as an international guest speaker at the 25th Saudi Heart Association on ECP and 3DVG where his presentations were well received. He is now working in collaboration with a cardiac team in Saudi Arabia to establish ECP and 3DVG there. The presentations can be viewed on our website: www. counterpusation.co.za On commenting on some of his success stories with his patients Dr Mohanlall said, " My first ECP patient was a post bypass 65 year old gentleman who was in cardiac failure and not suitable for further intervention. He experienced shortness of breath and chest pain

Leading Non-Invasive Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Problems when walking even a short distance. Four years later he is still leading an active lifestyle and can walk 2km a day." "My second patient who is now 72 years was advised by his doctors that he would be lucky if he lived to see the next 6 months. He was a post bypass patient in cardiac failure and bedridden at the time that I took over his treatment regimen. After ECP he experienced no more chest pains and could walk up to 6 km in a day. Recently he was admitted in cardiac ICU with difficulty in breathing which led to him being resuscitated for more than 30 minutes by the ICU team without success. I then took over the management of the resuscitation and revived the patient with no neurological damage. The cardiologist said that it was the 'most astounding resuscitation they had ever seen' and could not understand how I revived the patient after going against textbook protocol. He was amazed at the quick recovery of the patient who walked out of the hospital a few days later." Another patient that I managed to save was a 48 year old female who complicated after she was taken in for an angiogram. She went into cardiac failure and her leg needed to be amputated due to complications. Her family requested for me to do the 3DVG test on her and using the results I advised that she was not in heart failure due to coronary artery disease but due to vascular shut down and that she would be able to undergo surgery to remove the clots in her legs rather than amputating. She was treated accordingly and walked out of hospital a few days later." More success stories and patient testimonials can be viewed on the website: www.counterpulsation.co.za In concluding Dr Mohanlall said, "I was only able to assist these patients due my experience of having been part of the bypass team in South Africa and abroad as well as the abundance of information that the 3DVG assessment can provide and the experience I gained in performing the thousands of hours of ECP on patients. I have now come to a realization that ECP should be considered first in many patients before invasive interventional procedures in order to ensure the greatest success with the least pain and suffering rather than a patient going through all the invasive procedures and still coming back to perform ECP to get relief from their symptoms.” Dr Mohanlall also noted that he owes his success in life to GOD as well as the support of his family, friends and wife Nishara, who is his pillar of strength. Dr Mohanlall and Nishara have two children Arya and Rikaar who are their greatest joys in life.

Fat-Burning Body-Weight Workout

The four-move body-weight workout for maximizing fat loss.

by Mike Simone

Building muscle, increasing strength, and burning fat isn’t just a product of countless hours of lifting heavy weight. Body-weight workouts can be just as effective, and even place less strain on the body’s joints. Here is a demonstration of a four-move fat-burning workout suitable for highly trained athletes or the casual gym-goer.

THE WORKOUT INSTRUCTIONS:

Complete four rounds of the following four exercises with 60–120 seconds’ rest in between rounds.

THE EXERCISES:

1. lateral stepup: 6 repetitions per side 2. archer pushup: 6 repetitions per side 3. ice skater lunges (explosive): 10 repetitions per side 4. pushup pike with feet on a box: 6 repetitions

THE WORKOUT BENEFITS:

This workout targets the entire body with two upperbody movements and two lower-body movements to provide muscular balance. Performing the exercises with high intensity and at a rapid pace will boost cardiovascular endurance and maximize fat-burning and caloric expenditure. This workout is ideal for anyone looking to lose weight or develop a general base of strength without the strain of heavy weightlifting.

EXERCISE-SPECIFIC BENEFITS:

The lateral stepup is a lower-body exercise that increases strength and power in the quads, hamstrings, and glutes. As a unilateral exercise, muscular balance is achieved on both sides of the body. The archer pushup is an upper-body exercise that increases strength and power in the chest, shoulders, and triceps. Performing the exercise in a side-to-side, “archer-like” motion will improve balance on both sides of the body. Tip: Maintain a neutral spine and brace your core throughout the entire movement. Position your “lower” hand farther up or down to increase or decrease the difficulty. The ice skater lunge is a lower-body exercise that increases muscular strength, power, and endurance in the quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Performing the exercise rapidly will also improve cardiovascular endurance. The push-up pike with feet on a box is a combination exercise that increases muscular strength and endurance in the upper body, specifically the shoulders and triceps. The pike position also actively engages and strengthens the core.

You might often wonder why all health care professionals harp on… and on…about getting regularly screened for diabetes. Yes…your blood sugar might be high or even fluctuate dramatically during the course of the day. So What? “I’ll just stop taking 5 teaspoons of sugar in my tea and it should be sorted!” WRONG! The dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar have been proven to be the cause of numerous complications from Diabetes. High blood sugar levels cause damage to large and small blood vessels as well as nerves. We all know of an elderly member of the family who had to have their toe/foot/leg removed due to diabetes …. Why risk losing a limb when screening is quick and easy. In diabetes, the poor sugar control impacts on circulation especially in hands and feet – it also causes decreased sensation in these limbs. Due to this, we often strongly advise diabetics to regularly examine their feet. They may have injured themselves and not been aware of this. Eventually an open wound develops. The high sugar in the blood provides a good medium for bacteria to grow, causing overwhelming infection or even gangrene. All open injuries in diabetics take a longer period to heal putting them at high risk of developing complications. With nerve damage, not only is there decreasing sensation but also abnormal functioning of the nerve itself causing severe burning or tingling in the feet. This can be excruciating and often wakes the person from sleeping. Management can be difficult and complicated – it involves numerous individuals including a podiatrist, dietician, endocrinologist and regrettably, a surgeon. Why wait to complicate? Take control NOW!

LEGALLY SPEAKING WHAT IS MAINTENANCE? 59 Main Road, Malvern, Queensburgh (Opp Fruit & Veg)

031 463 2696 • 031 811 8911 Fax: 031 463 2696 • 086 243 6897 christinaponnen@gmail.com www.ponnenpienaar.co.za

WHAT IS MAINTENANCE? Maintenance is the obligation to provide another person, for example a minor, with housing, food, clothing, education and medical care, or with the means that are necessary for providing the person with these essentials. This legal duty to maintain is called ‘the duty to maintain’ or ‘the duty to support’. Who must provide maintenance? The duty to maintain is based on blood relationship, adoption, or the fact that the parties are married to each other. A child must be supported or maintained by: • his or her parents, whether married, living together, separated or divorced, including parents who have adopted the child; and/or • his or her grandparents, whether or not the child's parents were married to each other. However, this varies from one case to another. • The duty to support a family member is not limited to supporting a child. Any family member, irrespective of his or her age, can ask any family member to support or maintain him or her, provided that the following two conditions are met: 1. The family member who claims support is unable to maintain himself / herself. 2. The family member from whom maintenance is claimed is able to afford the maintenance that is claimed. The main requirement of the means test is that the person who is liable to pay maintenance must have MEANS & the maintenance must be REASONABLE. What expenses may be claimed? You may claim reasonable support that is necessary for providing the child or other person who has a right to maintenance with a proper living and upbringing. This includes providing necessities such as food, clothing and housing, as well as paying for a proper education. The court may also order the father to contribute to the payment of laying-in expenses and maintenance from the date of the child's birth up to the date on which the maintenance order is granted. The court may also grant an order for the payment of medical expenses, or may order that the child be registered on the medical scheme of one of the parties as a dependant. To enable the court to grant a fair maintenance order, both parties must provide the court with proof of their expenses. Your view of the other parent's behaviour has no effect on your children's right to maintenance. You still have to pay maintenance, even if the other parent • Remarries; • Is involved in another relationship; • Does not allow you to see the children or; • If either party later has more children. There are various steps that have to be followed when applying for maintenance in terms of the court process. This includes attending the magistrate’s court and completing a prescribed application form and attaching the relevant proof of expenses. A summons will be prepared and have to be served on the respondent calling on him/her to attend court on a specific date. On the date of appearance, the respondent may either consent to the maintenance order being granted or the court may make an order after an enquiry is held. The court is the upper guardian of all minors and therefore makes an order which will be in the best interest of the child.

Let us help you with you maintenance application. Call us today to make an appointment to discuss this issue further.

The

Trump Card of

OPTIMISM

A good outlook is that of optimism. I’m sure you’ve heard of the people who say the glass is “half empty” and who are generally pessimistic or those who say it is “half full” – and are optimistic. And I’m sure you’ve heard that the better attitude is that of the optimist … who actually gets more out of life than the pessimist. Why? Because the optimist always lives with joy, as in their lives there is always something joyous to look forward to. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t spoil the joy they have been experiencing. Momentarily they may experience disappointment … but that soon passes as there will be another joyous thing to look forward to. This is the habit of finding the best in any situation. There is a saying “It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.” I used to ponder over that when I was young. But think about it! If the wind blows off the roof of your house, that would be an ill wind. However, I’m sure you would soon work out how to get a new roof. Insurance maybe, or savings, or borrow money. Think of the benefits! You would have a great new roof, which might encourage repainting the house or other forms of upgrade. The disaster of the wind blowing off your roof would soon fade from your memory. Instead there would be this smart new roof. And the pieces of your old roof that are lying around that are taken to the dump, could help someone else fix up their roof or there could be another use for them. Benefits all around! I like to keep a bag of funny things to think about. This easily changes one’s mind set. Getting angry or depressed for too long is unhealthy. Momentarily one can get angry or upset, but it is equally easy to move away to a better frame of mind. Noticing the good things that abound is to appreciate life. The clouds in a blue sky, the birds singing, grass catching the sunlight, the beauty of trees. The more we appreciate the good in our lives, the more good comes into them. It is the habit of training ourselves in optimism. Life is not a smooth path. How boring that would be! After dealing with any crisis, let us change our mind sets, look into our bag of humour, and find something to smile about. In this way we learn to bring out that trump card of optimism! by Felicity Keats

Too Much SUGAR is a NO! NO! By Dr. Mercola

Why is sugar so bad?

When consumed, refined sugar leads to spikes in blood sugar and releases of insulin by the pancreas. Unless there is some physical activity coming up, the sugar needs to be stored somewhere as a backup energy source. That is essentially what fat is; it is a reserve fuel tank. Insulin is known as the fat producing and storing hormone. The sugar that is consumed ends up being stored as fat and, over time, can lead to obesity. Consistent sugar intake creates insulin resistance in the body. The pancreas gets used to pumping out so much insulin that it becomes resistant to insulin, and now you’re looking at developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes was always known as adult onset diabetes, but with it showing up so much in teens and even pre-teens, it is now classified as type 2 diabetes.

High fructose corn syrup

When people discuss sugar, we usually associate it with white table sugar which is derived from sugar cane and sugar beets. As bad is that is there is another champ as far as sugar and its negative effects on the body: high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). For those unfamiliar with HFCS, it is exactly what it sounds like, a refined sweet syrup that is extracted from corn. The majority of corn that is reserved for human consumption is turned into HFCS. HFCS was developed as a cheaper alternative to higher sugar trade tariffs, and it gave products a longer shelf life. It became a top choice for use in products during the low fat craze, as it was able to give products a texture and flavor to food with the absence of fat and allowed for browning characteristics. This is another reason that soft drinks grew from the smaller eight ounce servings to 20 ounce (and further giant sizes) without any real change in cost to manufacturers. Fructose in its natural fruit form is more mild on the body, as it is packaged with things like fiber and natural roughage so your body doesn’t get a straight show of sugar. In the form of fructose, and especially HFCS, it is absorbed even faster but straight into the liver where it triggers lipogenesis (the production of fats like triglycerides

and cholesterol). It is one of the major causes of liver damage, and why 70 million Americans suffer from a condition called “fatty liver“. Here are four great ways to replace sugar in your diet:

there will be a spike in blood sugar. Consuming a handful of nuts, like almonds or walnuts, before you have fruit or another food high in sugar will help stave off that blood sugar spike a little better.

1. Avoid artificial sweeteners

Stevia is showing some real promise as a sugar alternative. If you are unfamiliar with stevia but watched the last season of Breaking Bad, you are very familiar with it already. Don’t worry, no spoilers. Stevia is a plant that has been used for thousands of years as a way to sweeten things medicinally. It appears to not have the same negative effects as artificial sweeteners and provides some health benefits such as possibly reducing blood pressure and helping to lower blood sugar levels. Ideally you want to choose raw stevia leaf powder, which has a brighter green color to it. One option to give you a more natural version of stevia is to find it in liquid form.

This might seem weird, since drinks with artificial sweeteners have zero calories and zero sugar right? Technically, yes, but artificial sweeteners trick your body into believing that it is about to receive sugar. Since no sugar is consumed it can lead to actual sugar cravings, causing you to constantly be wanting the very thing a zero calorie beverage was helping you avoid. There is also research from the Washington School of Medicine that shows that sucralose causes a 20% rise in blood glucose. This means it is acting very similar to sugar without containing any sugar whatsoever.

2. Consume dark chocolate

When sugar cravings hit turn to the dark master–the cocoa bean. Instead of turning to sugary milk chocolate, dark chocolate that is made up of at least 70% cacao solids, ideally 90%, is shown to better help manage and lower blood sugar while helping stave off that sweet tooth. Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants and polyphenyls which help in glucose control. How does dark chocolate do this and is able to be recommended for diabetic patients? Because it is mostly made up of fat and allows it to rank very low on the glycemic index. This fat is the good fat, in the form of medium chain triglycerides which provide tremendous health benefits like helping prevent cardiovascular disease and lowering blood pressure. A square or two a day will help for that sugar craving while also providing tremendous health benefits

3. Eating protein with sugars

If you’re going to eat something that has refined sugar, or if you have issues like hypoglycemia, having something with some protein and fat before you consume sugar is going to help slow the release of blood sugar. When you consume something that is a majority of sugar, even fruit on its own,

4. Stevia

Stevia is also available in packets in the form of a white powder. It comes from the extraction of the glycosides in the plant, but some find this to have a bit of an aftertaste. Still, this appears to be a better choice than reaching for a sugar packet or artificial sweetener. When in doubt with your food, try to keep it real!

Wrapping it up

It is hard to avoid sugar; it is everywhere. Even in places you wouldn’t expect to find it: • ketchup • pasta sauce • salad dressing • cereal bars • bread • crackers • sushi • cough medicine • soy milk • frozen dinners Turning to foods in the purest form and avoiding processed and packaged “food” will be a big step in avoiding unnecessary sugar intake over the day. Additionally, looking to replace refined sugar with new alternatives like stevia, or reaching for some dark chocolate, will help you in your quest to remove or drastically reduce sugar all together. Your health will thank you for it.

Brain Boosting Foods

should be part of your staple diet As kids approach their final exams, parents should ensure that their kids are eating well and getting enough sleep. It is vital that they eat the right foods to boost their brain power and enhance cognitive function. Include these brain boosting foods as snacks or as part of their balanced meals. Blueberries are perhaps one of the

most beneficial brain foods. Rich in antioxidants, they protect your brain from damaging oxidative stress caused by accumulated free radicals in the body. In the industrial world that we live in, the amounts of these harmful species are increasing in our bodies to levels that actually harm cells and neurons, damage which is prevented by antioxidants. Blueberries enhance memory and improve learning abilities.

Avocados - The monounsaturated fats

in avocados promote blood flow and reduce blood pressure, which benefits all organs, including the brain. High in calories, a quarter to a half an avocado a day is sufficient.

Salmon is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids,

which maintain brain cell health and act as anti-inflammatories. Our bodies are unable to manufacture the amounts of fatty acids that we need, so an external source is required. The fatty acids in salmon support heart, brain and eye health throughout life, and fight agerelated cognitive disorders.

Olive Oil is a great source of Omega-3

fatty acids as well as antioxidants, which, as discussed above, protects the brain against oxidative stress. It has also been linked to improved learning and memory. One to two tablespoons a day sprinkled on salads or use for cooking is a good amount.

Flax Seeds are rich in fatty-acids, which are essential to brain health, enhancing memory and reducing age-related decline. A tablespoon or two a day will do it, added in smoothies or in a salad.

Broccoli is an excellent source of cho-

line, which has been known to improve memory and decrease age-related mental decline. It is also rich in vitamin K, which can increase the speed of brain functions and improve memory abilities.

Egg Yolks are one of the best sources

of choline, which, as discussed before, can improve memory and reduce age-related decline. It can also improve communication between brain cells. An egg a day is the recommended amount.

Nuts - Containing high levels of healthy

fats, nuts can increase mental clarity, memory and have been shown to reverse brain aging in older rats. They contain high levels of vitamin E, which prevents cognitive decline. Considering their brain-like shape, it’s suitable that walnuts are perhaps the best nut to eat for brain health. They can enhance mood, reduce mental decline and improve cardiac health.

Chickpeas - Rich in magnesium, chickpeas

promote faster transmission of messages between neurons. They relax the blood vessels, which promotes blood flow, and increase serotonin levels in the brain, which leads to a better mood. Start eating hummus more often and perhaps try a chickpea salad a few times a week.

Dark Chocolate - Perhaps the tastiest of

the brain boosting foods, dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and protects the brain against oxidative stress from free radicals. It contains endorphins which can improve mood. by Leanne Louie

STAYING POSITIVE

Negativity affects ourselves and everyone around us. It limits our potential to become something great and live a fulfilling, purposeful life. Negativity has a tangible effect on our health, too. Research has shown that people who cultivate negative energy experience more stress, more sickness, and less opportunity over the course of their lives

than those who choose to live positively. When we make a decision to become positive, and follow that decision up with action, we will begin to encounter situations and people that are also positive. The negative energy gets edged out by all positive experiences. It’s a snowball effect. Although negative and positive thoughts will always exist, the key to becoming positive is to limit the amount of negativity that we experience by filling ourselves up with more positivity. Here are some ways to get rid of negativity and become more positive.

Become grateful–for everything

When life is all about us, it’s easy to believe that we deserve what we have. An attitude of entitlement puts us at the center of the universe and sets up the unrealistic expectation that others should cater to us, our needs, and our wants. This vain state of existence is a surefire way to set yourself up for an unfulfilled life of negativity. People living in this sort of entitlement are “energy suckers”–they are always searching for what they can get out of a situation. People that don’t appreciate the nuances of their lives live in a constant state of lacking. And it’s really difficult to live a positive life this way. When we begin to be grateful and appreciate everything in our lives–from the small struggles that make us better, to the car that gets us from A to B every day–we shift our attitude from one of selfishness, to one of appreciation. This

appreciation gets noticed by others, and a positive harmony begins to form in our relationships. We begin to receive more of that which we are grateful for, because we’ve opened ourselves up to the idea of receiving, instead of taking. This will make your life more fulfilling, and more positive.

Laugh more–especially at yourself

Life gets busy, our schedules fill up, we get into relationships, and work can feel task oriented and routine-driven at times. Being human can feel more like being a robot. But having this work-driven, serious attitude often results in negative and performance oriented thinking. Becoming positive means taking life less seriously and letting yourself off the hook. This is the only life that you get to live–why not lighten up your mood? Laughter helps us become positive by lightening our mood and reminding us not to take life so seriously. Are you sensitive to light sarcasm? Do you have trouble laughing at jokes? Usually, people who are stressed out and overly serious get most offended by sarcasm because their life is all work and no play. If we can learn to laugh at ourselves and our mistakes, life will become more of an experiment in finding out what makes us happy. And finding happiness means finding positivity.

Help others

Negativity goes hand in hand with selfishness. People that live only for themselves have no higher purpose in their lives. If the whole point of this world is only to take care of yourself and no one else, the road to a long-term fulfillment and purpose is going to be a long one. Positivity accompanies purpose. The most basic way to create purpose and positivity in your life is to begin doing things for others. Start small; open the door for the person in front of you at Starbucks or ask someone how their day was before telling them about yours. Helping others will give you an intangible sense of value that will translate into positivity. And people might just appreciate you in the process.

Change your thinking

We can either be our best coach or our best enemy. Change starts from within.

If you want to become more positive, change the wording of your thoughts. We are the hardest on ourselves, and a stream of negative self talk is corrosive to a positive life. The next time you have a negative thought, write it down and rephrase it with a positive spin. For example, change a thought like, “I can’t believe I did so horribly on the test–I suck.” to “I didn’t do as well as I hoped to on this test. But I know I’m capable and I’ll do better next time.” Changing our self-talk is powerful.

Surround yourself with positive people

We become most like the people that we surround ourselves with. If our friend group is full of negative energy-suckers and drama queens, we will emulate that behavior and become like them. It is very difficult to become more positive when the people around us don’t support or demonstrate positive behavior. As you become more positive, you’ll find that your existing friends will either appreciate the new you or they will become resistant to your positive changes. This is a natural response; change is scary. But cutting out the negative people in your life is a huge step to becoming more positive. Positive people reflect and bounce their perspectives onto one another. Positivity is a step-by-step process when you do it solo, but a positive group of friends can be an escalator.

Get into action

Negative thoughts can be overwhelming and challenging to navigate. Negativity is usually accompanied by a “freakout” response, especially when tied to relationships, people and to worrying about the future. This is debilitating to becoming positive and usually snowballs into more worry, more stress and more freak-outs. Turn the negative stress into positive action. The next time you’re in one of these situations, walk away and take a break. With your eyes closed, take a few deep breaths. Once you’re calm, approach the situation or problem with a pen and pad of paper. Write out four or five actions or solutions to begin solving the problem. Taking yourself out of the emotionally charged negative by moving into the action-oriented positive will help you solve more problems rationally and live in positivity by Chris Talambas

You’re Smarter Than You Think,

19

CHANGENOW MAGAZINE

Even If You Don’t Feel You Are Intelligence comes in all shapes and sizes. People have widely varying skill sets and have very different education backgrounds (formal or otherwise!). Because of this, it’s important to remember these differences when interacting with others. For instance, if I were placed in a room full of physicists, I would feel like the least intelligent person in the room. However, put me in a room full of writers and I’d feel right at home. You never want to sell yourself short or feel that you’re less intelligent than you really are. That’s not beneficial for anyone. Intelligence doesn’t always present itself in the form of book smarts or prowess in a particular academic field. Intelligence can also be found in practical skills, musical ability, even athletics. Intelligence is multifaceted and complex, which means that it applies to many more people than you might initially think. People often think that they aren’t smart simply because they don’t fall into a specific category; that’s not true at all! So even if you don’t feel like you’re smart, read these 7 signs that indicate you are smarter than you think you are and face the day with confidence.

1. You’re hard on yourself. One of the most frustrating things that could happen to you is not being able to understanding something. For smarties like you, it’s incredibly annoying to come across something you don’t get right off the bat. How come? Because things usually come easy for you. So when something isn’t readily apparent to you, you feel badly about your own intelligence. 2. You’re tuned in. Smart people are usually pretty tuned in to the world around them insofar as they read and watch the news. You likely keep up on current events somewhat, even if that means simply scrolling through your Twitter feed. You like to know what’s going on around you, and you like to understand the issues that are facing the country and the world today. Even if it’s a cursory interest, it’s there. 3. You’re misunderstood. Maybe your humor was too sophisticated. Maybe your vocabulary was too advanced. Whatever the situation, it’s common for intelligent people to be misunderstood by those around them. It’s no fault of yours; it’s just the way smart people go through life. You’re constantly explaining yourself to others. And that brings me to my next point… 4. Your friends are smart. Smart people tend to surround

themselves with other smart people. After all, who wants to hang around with a bunch of people who don’t understand your jokes? Your friends understand you and can relate to you, so you’re just as smart as they are. And since your friends are, well, your friends, you think highly of them. They think just as highly of you!

5. You have high expectations for yourself. Smart people are expected to do great things. Even as children, smart people are placed in advanced classes and given higher level reading materials. Because of this, smart people tend to have big plans in their futures. Whether that be to go to a certain college or follow a certain career path, you’re likely planning big things for yourself down the road. Maybe you want to expand your business or come up with a new strategy for an athletic team. Whatever your goal, you expect to achieve it. 6. You like games. Many smart people enjoy games because they’re things to be figured out. For instance, many intelligent people enjoy filling out crosswords and playing card and board games. These games require thinking and concentration, which appeals to smarties like yourself. Games are great because they’re stimulating. When you’re playing a game, you’re thinking, even in your down time! This is especially true for people who work with their hands and are in the business of fixing or building things. Everything is a puzzle. 7. You’ve been told you’re smart. Honestly, many smart people don’t like to think of themselves as smart because it’s almost a social no-no to do so. It’s like you’re bragging on yourself, when, in reality, you’re simply stating a fact. What is the number one way to know that you’re smart? People have told you that you’re smart. Intelligence gets a lot of attention, especially in work and classroom settings. So embrace your braininess and enjoy life in the smart lane!

Money-Saving Tips

From Billionaires That Everyone Should Know You shouldn’t listen to advice from just anyone. But if the money tips are coming from billionaires who’ve earned their own fortune, they’re probably worth a listen! Here are some valuable pieces of advice to set you off on your path to your first billion.

helicopter to their lunch meetings, or ride in chauffeur-driven Bentleys, but they choose to get a little exercise and take advantage of public transportation instead. Good for the bank account and great for the environment.

Pay yourself first

The average haircut costs about $45 (R499), but people can and do spend up to $800 (9200) per cut and style. Multiply that by 8.6 (to account for a cut every six weeks) and it adds up to $7,200 (R82,800) per year, not including tips. These billionaires can certainly afford the most stylish haircuts, but many cannot be bothered by the time it takes or the high price tag for the posh salons. Billionaires like John Caudwell and David Cheriton opt for cutting their own hair at home.

What do you do first when you receive your paycheck: spend first and let the remaining be your savings? Or do you save before you spend? If you’re spending first, maybe that’s one of the reasons you are having trouble saving your money. You must pay yourself first before you pay your bills or buy something you need. Paying yourself first before spending will make sure that you have a good amount of money saved every month. You can save at least 10% of your monthly income for starters and use the remaining 90% to cover your monthly expenses. You can even save more depending on the budget that you have set up.

Keep your home simple Billionaires can afford to live in the most exclusive mansions imaginable—and many do. Just look at Bill Gates’ sprawling 66,000-squarefoot, $147.5-million (R1696,25m) mansion in Medina, Washington. Yet frugal billionaires like Warren Buffet choose to keep it simple. Buffet still lives in the five-bedroom house in Omaha that he purchased in 1957 for $31,500 (R362,250). Likewise, Carlos Slim has lived in the same house for more than 40 years.

Use self-powered or public transportation Thrifty billionaires John Caudwell, David Cheriton, and Chuck Feeney prefer to walk, bike or use public transportation when getting around town. Certainly these wealthy individuals could afford to take a

Keep your scissors sharp

Buy your clothes off the rack Some people, regardless of their net value, place a huge emphasis on wearing designer clothes and shoes. But frugal billionaires decide it’s simply not worth the effort or the expense. You can find David Cheriton—the Stanford professor whose early investment in Google made him a billionaire—wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Ingvar Kamprad, founder of the furniture company Ikea, avoids wearing suits, and John Caudwell, mobile phone mogul, buys his clothes off the rack instead of spending his wealth on designer clothes.

Skip luxury items It may surprise you, but the world’s wealthiest person, Carlos Slim (the same guy who could spend more than a thousand dollars a minute and not run out of money for one hundred years) does not own a yacht or a plane. Many other billionaires have chosen to skip these luxury items. Warren Buffet also avoids these lavish material items. “Most toys are just a

pain in the neck,” he’s said.

Billionaires follow a budget Even billionaires know that having a budget is important for them to organize their finances properly and find out where their money is going. They want to make sure they are utilizing their money well and not wasting their work.

Billionaires have a good credit score Billionaires are not fond of borrowing money. Unless it’s something they would need and benefit from, like starting another business or expanding their business, they wouldn’t apply for a loan. That’s one of the ways they can get their application approved easily. Another one is because they have a high credit score that makes them a low-risk investment to most lending companies.

Billionaires have their own investment portfolio Billionaires invest their money. They know that getting an ordinary savings account to help them in growing their saved money is not a smart decision. They chose to be investors because billionaires know that it’s the best way to grow their wealth over time. Investing is also one of the reasons billionaires don’t have to work so hard for years, and are able to retire comfortably without any worries about their finances. Billionaires are not that different from us. They’re just people who know how to value their money and use it properly. Oh, and they are also way richer than pretty much all of us.
