Letters to theEditor Talking Change

Hello ChangeNOW Supporters

Thank you to Bernice Stott for embracing our September Cover. Congratulations on a wonderful solo exhibition, Liquid Light: Forms Drawn from Nature, reflecting on the social and symbolic value of water. As a lover of all forms of art, music, visual arts, theatre and off course cooking, and being in touch with these creative forms is food for my soul. My passion for food hails from some great friends I had made during my eight year stay in the city that never sleeps, Miami, Florida. Miami is a melting pot of, cuisine, cultures and the arts. Whilst living in South Florida, I was richly blessed to have met people from every Latino nation, Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Austria, Russia, India and the Carribbean Islands as well. This cosmopolitan metropolis has been a major influence in my fusion cooking style. At our home its a given fact that my favourite dish is Jamaican Cuisine, something I probably share with Jamie Oliver. October is one of the most exciting months for the Durban Foodies, as one of the best events comes to town, the Good Food & Wine Show which boasts some great local and international talent this year. Durban has done it again! Last week IBV Supercar Parade in Durban broke the Guinness Book of records for raising R1 Million in a car parade and the beneficiaries were UNICEF, Child Welfare South Africa and The Sunflower Fund. Enjoy a short spring break with your kids, but also ensure that they are gearing up for their final exams ad get the professional and personal attention they may require from an education centre like Kip McGrath.

After I Started Doing Morning Exercise,

Life is Getting Better…

We think we are allergic to Morning. We lived by this truth for far too many years, holding onto the belief as if it were a concrete part of our personality—a trait that couldn’t be changed even if we wanted to. For a long time, we have tried to create the habit of exercise, but sadly most of us were not very successful at that. One day I realized how much of my life I was wasting lounging around in bed. An extra hour in bed each day meant that I was sleeping for 15 extra days a year. I decided to take action. I decided I wanted to live longer each year and getting up early would be the perfect way to include more exercise in my life. These are the benefits of morning exercise that I have experienced, and hopefully you will too.

My stress levels are lower.

With regular exercise most people experience a reduction in stress. They are better able to handle the typical stresses of the day. Working out first thing in the morning ensures that the day will be easier to manage. Less stress means more control and typically a better day all round.

I have more energy.

By exercising in the morning you will find that your energy levels much higher throughout the day. It is very difficult to motivate yourself to exercise in the evening, especially if you have had a busy, stressful day at work. Your instinct will be to collapse on the sofa. By working out in the morning, you will have more energy throughout the day and you won’t be as affected by stressful events in your working day.

I’m getting better sleep.

When you rise early to exercise you will find yourself going to bed earlier, but the great part about that is that you will go to sleep more easily than before.

I feel more in control.

Another thing you may notice is an increased feeling of being in control. You wake up early, you have time to get ready without the anxiety and the pressure of running to make your bus or train or worrying about the traffic. When you have time in the morning, you will be more organized and able to think about what is coming your way.

I am more productive.

Your productivity will increase as you arrive to work energized, focused and more organized than before. Exercise is one of the biggest contributors to effective personal productivity.

My creativity has increased.

An added bonus of reduced stress, increased energy and focus is creativity. Many report increased creativity when they are more relaxed and in control. A clear mind has space for more creative thinking.

I feel empowered.

If you manage to get up early every day for the next 6 weeks to exercise, you will show yourself that anything is possible. You will know that changing your life is within your control. Give it a go, get up early in the morning to exercise and believe me: before long, you will feel invincible.

Tina’s Story ...

from tragedy to triumph “He was very special and extremely brave and has taught us all lessons and we all miss him so much.” – This is how Tina Botha describes her first born son Chris Corlett. In August of 1997 Tina faced every mother’s worst nightmare, her son Chris was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia whilst in Grade 9. He underwent 6 months of gruelling chemotherapy and full body radiation. This was the start of a 3 year nightmare for Tina and her family. In February 1998 Chris had his first bone marrow transplant. This was an autologous transplant with a harvest from his own blood as there were no compatible family donors and they were not doing unrelated transplants at that stage. By July 1998 Chris was back at school. As a family they were optimistic that Chris now faced a healthy future and during this time he had even managed to travel to Durban to the "Gunston 500" surfing championships with "Reach for a Dream". Chris had great plans for his future with art and graphic design always being the most important to him. Tina’s bubble burst in March 1999 when Chris suffered a relapse. The leukaemia was back with a vengeance and Chris had to decide whether he wanted to give up or fight back and try again. The worst thing was that Chris had been through hell and now he knew exactly what to expect if he decided to do it again. As only Chris could do he decided to tackle it head on and began another 6 months of tortuous treatment. This time he had to have an unrelated matched donor transplant. This meant an urgent search for a match for him and only 6 months in which to do this. It was at this point that Tina realised what a terrible state the South African Bone Marrow Registry was in and how remote the odds were of finding a match. Tina was with Chris when he very suddenly slipped away. “I was able to hold him and talk to him and tell him I loved him. His whole family was there and I will never forget that day”. Chris was a surfer who rode the crest of life with courage and honour facing each and every battle bravely. This character surely comes from a special mother who loved beyond measure, fighting for life for her son. She continues to ride the waves with their peaks and dips, nothing deterring her from keeping Chris’ dream alive – let no one else lose their “Chris” unnecessarily – surely this demonstrates how each and every one of us can make that special difference?

Working Hard to Build a National Asset to Help All South Africans What does The Sunflower Fund do?

The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders like leukaemia. It strives to maintain the associated donor records of the South African Bone Marrow Registry.

Where do the funds get used?

In carrying out its activities The Sunflower Fund raises funds which are used: • To pay for the DNA tissue-typing tests of new donors. This costs The Fund R2000 per person to join the Registry. • To promote public awareness of leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders through education and similar programmes. • To recruit donors for the National Registry of SABMR. • To assist in the regular and on-going updating of donor particulars on the National Registry database. • To assist, where possible, in meeting the costs of certain searches of the National Registry database.

How can the public help and get involved with The Sunflower Fund? They can become bone marrow stem cell donors by calling our toll free number 0800 12 10 82 (weekdays between 08h30 – 16h30). They must meet donor criteria and be in excellent health and aged between 18–45.

They can make a financial donation to assist us in paying for the donor tests: Bank: ABSA Account name: The Sunflower Fund Account number: 405 183 4719 Branch code: 632005 Reference: Donation and Surname There is no such thing as a small donation – every little bit helps us save more lives. All funds raised will go towards recruiting and testing new donors onto the Registry. Log on to www.sunflowerfund.org.za Call 031 266 1148 • “Share a Little, Save a Life”.

Last year? 2 years ago? Maybe longer? Do you know what you are paying for each of your policies as well as what benefits you have right now? Chances are that you don’t, most of you have taken out a policy and kept the policy document very safely together with other important documents, never to take it out again... As important as it is to have a policy, it is also vitally important to review it and make sure that the policy still suits your needs. For instance, you may have taken out the policy when you were unmarried and had your mum or dad as a beneficiary, now that you are married that needs to be amended to include your spouse or kids if you have any. You could have also taken out the policy when you were newly employed, earning a small monthly income. Your occupation could have changed and your income would definitely have increased as well. So, did you know that with life insurance policies the more you earn, the less you pay? This means that you could effectively be paying a lot less for cover that you bought a while ago because your rating category may have improved. The other important thing to note is that companies are always enhancing their products, including the benefits that are offered, so for instance you could have purchased a severe illness benefit that expired at age 65, whereas now, you could have the benefit for the whole of life. With Investment Policies and Retirement Annuities as well, you could have been placed into an underlying fund that isn’t producing the returns you expected, however due to it not being reviewed you are contributing to a fund where your return is less than your investment. All this requires is a simple switching of funds to enable maximum growth. Small changes that may cost a minimal amount more, however it could improve your policy enormously. So pull out those documents from that “safe place” dust it off, give me a call and let’s see how I can assist you in making your policy work for you when you need it the most. As a service to all clients, I will review your policies for you free of charge and give you the necessary advice if required. I look forward to being of assistance to you!

I HAVE A BREAST LUMP!!! NOW WHAT??? Firstly congratulations on conducting a self-examination of your breasts. It is one of the most important, yet often overlooked, tools for preventing breast cancer. You have to know what your breasts normally feel like so that you can detect the smallest change in them – rather than visiting your doctor when there is an obvious abnormality. Once a breast lump is suspected, a visit to your local doctor is an absolute necessity. Examination will help determine whether the lump is cystic or solid in nature. Your doctor will also be checking for features that might assist in the diagnosis – is it painful/painless, are there multiple lesions or is this isolated , where is it situated, is it fixed/mobile, are there associated lumps under the armpits, are there any skin/nipple changes, is there any discharge from the nipple? The next step is a mammogram and ultrasound of the breasts to aid in visualising and defining the mass. A surgical consult is required to develop a diagnostic and management plan. A cystic lesion might require drainage of fluid – this is then sent for microscopy. In the majority, solid lesions are biopsied. The management is dependent on these results. Should it be a benign (non-cancerous) lesion, observation and a repeat mammogram is required. If the results show a malignancy (cancer), surgical intervention is needed – this could range from a lumpectomy (removal of the lump) to a full mastectomy with lymph node clearance. Treatment might also include chemo or radiotherapy. It is of utmost importance to address the psychological well-being of the patient and their family, as well. A diagnosis of cancer always has a ‘doom and gloom’ feeling to it and the road to recovery is a challenging one for everyone involved. So let’s not adopt the ostrich philosophy of burying your head in the sand - face your fears!, it could Change your Life. Be Breast Cancer Conscious…. It can be beaten!

Gourmet Vegetarian Feast

served up at Harvey’s in Durban.

Chefs Andrew Draper (Head Chef from the renowned Harvey’s restaurant in Umhlanga, north of Durban) and Nizam Peeroo (Group Executive chef from the Five Star Indigo hotels group in Mauritius) created an array of restaurant style vegetarian dishes in a successful Fry’s Foods cooking demonstration. Wally Fry, co-founder of Fry’s Family Foods said “We invited key media and industry players in the food arena to our demonstration as we wanted to show just how delicious a vegetarian meal can be when it is prepared with passion and imagination and with quality ingredients. The meals that Andrew and Nizam prepared were astounding and really showed how you can have a satisfying meal full of flavour without meat.” After enjoying canapés all made using Fry’s vegetarian products, guests were treated to the food demonstration which was followed by delectable taster servings of the dishes prepared by the two chefs. On the menu was a Moroccan chicken style burger, served on rich

butternut puree with Moroccan chermoula and spiced dukka; spicy sausages with a toasted cumin seed and coriander Napoli tossed in rosmarino pasta; crispy meat-free prawns served in a Thai curry, with coconut sticky rice and spaghetti vegetables; a spicy ‘beef’ wellington (vegetarian style) and a frothy, cappuccino-style spicy split pea soup served with a skewered sausage. “The vegetarian products from Fry’s are far more stable than meat during cooking, which makes it easier to work with,” Andrew Draper said. “The food was divine. You could not tell that you were not eating meat,” said blogger Nicola Meyer, who was one of the guests. “The two chef’s made us all think outside the box and showed us how we can do so much more than just opening a box of Fry’s products and cooking it according to the instructions. There are many new and interesting meals you can make.”

Essential Study Tips

You Need to Know

WORDS

ARE OUR WANDS TO A MAGICAL FUTURE! by Felicity Keats

Perhaps the future lies in our hands, but it most definitely lies in the palms of the youth. Therefore it would be great if young people found they don’t only have a left brain but also another separate right brain which, if discovered and developed, would give them a whole brain. What is it that a whole brain is capable of doing? 90% of the unknown is in the territory of the right brain, Allowing them access to secrets of the universe, to unsolved mysteries, to solutions to problems that the left brain can never find. The left brain just reinvents the wheel, regurgitating what is already known, making problems but being unable to solve these problems. Consider the right hemisphere of the brain. It is like a lateral processor which can get any information it wants from the left brain, is intuitive, and has both creative abilities and is problem solving. It is a happy positive side of each person that never heard of failure. The only thing it is averse to, is criticism. This could come as a helpful hint to those in any position that guides or mentors the young. Be careful with the words you use! Harsh critical words will destroy the right brain’s ability to create and think out of the box. Use words as your wands, magic words, that build confidence. So, young people, discover your right brains which are also ethical, and become the great leaders, inventors and thinkers this great country needs!

With the final exams upon us, I thought it would be a good idea to ask a teacher for some study advice and tips for parents. We all “know” how to study – sit down and start going through your work. But it’s not as simple as that, is it? Here are some essential study tips you should know and remember as a parent. Determine what type of learner your child is Visual, auditory or kinaesthetic? Don’t know what these terms mean? Well you should, because your child will generally fit into one or two of these learning categories. Understanding what type of learner your child is can help you help them. Find a study method that suits your child Drawing mind maps, colour-coding important information, creating flashcards, listening to pre-recorded notes and watching slide presentations with relevant notes, are some ideas you should try with your child. He or she might not benefit from using all of these methods, but through some trial and error, you’ll find a study method that your child feels very comfortable using. And as soon as your child is comfortable with studying, you’ve already won half the battle. Provide a space to study Some children need to move around while studying, and others need a quiet sanctuary with a desk. If your child moves while studying, don’t keep them holed up in a tiny room. Make sure that the area they use is available whenever they need to study, even though it may be an inconvenience for you to forgo your lounge or dining area for a while (or often!). If your child prefers the solitude of their bedroom, it is not advisable that he or she learns on their bed. Set a study time span Determine a time span that your child is able to concentrate and study for. 20 – 25 minutes is preferable, maybe less for a younger child. Set a timer for this – a kitchen timer works wonderfully. Once you’re satisfied, let your child continue with the next section of work. Some children find it beneficial to study the same sections of work over and over, during the course of a few days, until they know it very well. A once-off study session is never conducive to successful marks. Create a timetable Draw up a timetable that is visible and realistic so that your child knows what is expected of them on a daily basis. This is a nonnegotiable, and you as the parent have to be strict about this. Remember, you are the adult! Be prepared to make your own sacrifices As a parent, you’ll need to learn to make sacrifices of your own. Before and during the exams, don’t book time away. Eliminate as much stress as possible by creating an environment conducive to effective learning. Be available for your child, motivate and encourage them, and make sure that there are power snacks available and that they have plenty to drink. A good night’s sleep is also very important. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Your child needs you. You’d be disappointed if your child did poorly during an exam. Likewise, make sure you don’t disappoint your child by being disorganized and unprepared. Again, you’re the adult and you are ultimately the person your child is going to look to as a role model. Always be prepared and organized. Pre-plan meals (freeze them if necessary – takeaways are not a good option during exams), make sure you drop your child off at school on time, and create a calm, supportive environment at home.

If you want to be highly successful, don’t just rely on the concept of “destiny”. Don’t even think about fooling yourself by thinking that “fate” will let whatever’s meant to be to happen. When Steve Jobs was fired from his own company, he could have just stopped. He could have just told other people that “it wasn’t meant to me.” But what did he do next? Because he was too focused in developing technology to help change the world, he launched NeXT, a new computer company, and he also launched Pixar Animation Studios. “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love.” – Steve Jobs

Fail just means First Attempt In Learning.

Think of every highly successful person you know. Do you know any one of them who got lucky by being successful at the first try? Oprah Winfrey was fired from her first television job as an anchor. Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor as he “had no good ideas.” Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting in his life. (The sale was even months before his death!) So the next time you fail, keep going on. Highly successful people didn’t stop — and neither should you.

Never ever doubt yourself.

“Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right.” – Henry Ford The road to being a famous and successful person is tough. People will mock you. Strangers will make fun of you. And sometimes, even your loved ones who think they are protecting you will even try to talk you out of doing something that you’re passionate about.

Listen to what they’re saying, yes. But don’t take them to heart if you think that what they’re saying is already hurting you. Sometimes, you have to keep on believing in yourself, even if other people seem like they don’t.

Choose to continue, even if nothing seems to be working out.

“It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” – J. K Rowling. She was working on her first ever Harry Potter novel when she was a single mother who was just living off welfare. Even so, she didn’t let this stop her. She finished the book and asked publishers all over the town. As she wasn’t well-known yet, publishing houses rejected her and even gave her harsh criticisms. Nothing seemed to be working out for her - but she still chose to continue and push through! J.K. Rowling became the firstever billionaire author in 2014.

Being a genius doesn’t automatically translate to being successful.

“I failed some subjects in exam but my friend passed it all. Now he is an engineer in Microsoft, and I am the owner in Microsoft.” – Bill Gates You don’t need to ace all your exams. You don’t need to top every class. And you don’t need to be a know-it-all just to be able to succeed in life. Talent and persistence can always trump intelligence any time.

If you really want it, you’ll find a way to get it.

Walt Disney asked the banks and other lending institutions to lend him money so that he could get started on his amusement theme park. Since he had no credit history and collateral, naturally, they all refused him. He didn’t stop there. He took a loan from his own life insurance policy and made history.

Take calculated risks.

“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” – John D. Rockefeller Chess wonder kid Magnus Carlesen decided to be a professional chess player when he realized that he was “quite good.” He didn’t make the decision out of a whim – he initially assessed his abilities and decided based on that fact.

Know what you’re getting into.

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” – Albert Einstein. Self-made millionaire and highly successful person Warren Buffett always believes that you should never invest in a business that you don’t understand. Simply put, if you don’t know how something operates, how can you figure out how you can make money off of it?

Simple Ways To Attract Money To You Are you the one who’s always complaining about never having enough money or maybe you’re not as financially successful as your peers or colleagues? Have you ever wondered what the “secret sauce” was or what exactly you could be doing differently to increase your financial success in life? Well, if you follow these simple tips then you are going to learn exactly how you can take charge of your money and fill your wallet.

Educate Yourself

The first step to increasing your income or building wealth is to educate yourself. If you only have a high school diploma then consider getting your Associate or Bachelor’s

degree. Education can open up many doors to career advancement and higher pay. And remember, education doesn’t stop after you’ve finally gotten your university degree! It’s impossible to know everything but the more you know, the better!

Networking Is Key

Networking and actually connecting with other people in your field can open up many new opportunities for career advancement. Not only should you network with people inside of your field but also network with people outside of your field. You never know what you may learn by networking with people of different occupations and trades. True networking is about forming meaningful connections by engaging in actual conversation.

Share Your Knowledge

Share your knowledge. Create videos, power points, e-books, or even write a blog and give them away for free to

other people in your industry! When you give back others in the form of knowledge, you are also giving back to yourself by establishing yourself as an expert in your field.

Discipline Yourself

When it comes to building wealth, having knowledge is important but self-discipline is even more important. You have to realize that no matter how hard you work or how badly you want to build wealth, it’s going to require hard work and a lot of patience. It won’t happen overnight. If you can master the art of self perseverance then you’ve got what it takes to become financially successful.

Learn From Successful People

Read up on articles, books, and documentaries on financially successful people. Learn what they did to become successful and what you could do to maybe follow in their footsteps.

Being an Entrepreneur and Working For Yourself Rocks! Getting out of your comfort zone can be a tad scary sometimes. But the long-term satisfaction is way better than anything that requires you working on someone else’s dream.

money process by becoming your own captain, so to speak.. It doesn’t matter what your business is, everything you sell will directly go into your pocket when you become an entrepreneur.

Why not be an entrepreneur and work towards your own dream? Here are reasons why becoming an entrepreneur might be the best decision you’ll ever make.

You Feel Accomplished

You have your own business, make enough money to support your family (or are working towards that goal) and have time to enjoy yourself. You go to bed knowing that you did everything you could do that day to get you closer to your dream, and that’s what accomplishment looks like! You give 110% for every project you create for your clients, because you know that their satisfaction is what’s going to keep your business alive.

Flexible Hours

When you work for yourself, you are your own boss. You can decide when to start working, when to go to lunch and when to go to the bathroom. I mean, don’t you just hate it when you have to ask your boss for ten minutes longer at lunch because you’re stuck in traffic? Then your pay is cut because you missed ten minutes at the punchin. That’s why being an entrepreneur is so wonderful; you are independent to choose when you want to work.

Money goes directly into your pocket

Regardless of whether your boss pays you by the hour or on commission, he or she will always make more money than you. Period. I’m not saying that in a hateful way towards your boss, mainly because that’s why he or she is the boss! But, you can change the

gives to its soldiers. It’s a discipline that will follow you for the rest of your life! You will learn to manage your time wisely and say “no” to distractions like the TV or the newest Vine that came out. It’s a discipline that you inflict on yourself because you want to, so it’s easier for to stick to it.

You Develop Self Discipline

Ah, discipline! There are two types of discipline: the one you get from your parents and the one you get at school or in the military. When you have a business though, the discipline you build is a combination of both what your parents gave you when you were younger and the discipline the military

You’re taught lessons that school or work can’t teach you

When you’re an entrepreneur, you learn things through trial and error. You learn to be intuitive and to think fast for solutions without dwelling on the problem. You learn to manage your finances, your personality and your clients in a way that school or work can never teach you.
