Letters to theEditor Talking Change
Hello ChangeNOW Supporters
Dear Mr Maree. Thanks for everything.
Thank you Dr Mohanlall for embracing our November cover, and for the very informative and educational feature article. As we head towards the holidays, we find ourselves multi-tasking as we begin to realise that the end of the year is upon us. Everyone is rushing around in an attempt to get to all the things they thought they would have done by now, either getting ready for a holiday or getting the home in order for visitors or holiday makers. This is my favourite time of the year to just unwind and relax with family and friends. This holiday issue we are pleased to have on board Vawda Jewellers situated at the Pavilion with their great gift offerings to readers at great prices. Congratulations to Vaughn Marescia, formerly from Pinetown Peugeot on opening his own dealership in Pietermaritzburg which encompasses three leading automobile brands Peugeot, Citroen & Volvo. Enjoy a great pampering session at Natural Beauty, we are glad to hear that readers are coming from out of area to visit Kamani at Natural Beauty. We have some great featured editorials on taking a simple road trip that could be life changing and a game changer as we acknowledge the beautiful country we live in and working smart and not hard in 2015 is a great read. Ashika Devnarain gives great advice on saving for your children’s education, starting today. As always Dr. Reddy writes on pertinent topics and this month she covers the major epidemic in our country HIV and how important it is to know your status. Our attorney columnist Christina Ponnen advises you on debt counselling . As we reflect on 2014 and enter into 2015, let’s focus on all those around us that have been part of our lives and most of all be grateful and embrace what we have. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my columnists Dr Reddy, Christina Ponnen as well as all our advertisers and all our loyal readers for their support in 2014. On behalf of team ChangeNOW Magazine, we would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday.
Be Safe & Believe in YOU! Publisher - Raj Maree
We commend you on your sense of efficiency and a Job that was extremely well done. We are glad to have met you and think we will work together in the near future as new developments occur. We will spread the word and God Bless. Regards Dr. Mohanlall - Umhlanga

Enjoy our
Beautiful Country, and take a
Road-Trip
Flying is obviously a much more convenient mode of travel. Quick and generally reliable, it gets the job done. But one thing flying can't do is turn the journey itself into a holiday experience. This might require some planning, but hey, if you have a huge family not only will it be cheaper; you might learn something in the venture. If you are considering breaking your mundane daily routine with a bit of holiday inspired fun, I strongly suggest taking a road trip around our beautiful country as opposed to a traditional holiday. South Africa is perfect for jumping in the car and hitting the tarmac. It's easy to navigate, with tempting freeways leading out of the cities, and it packs a bulging lunch box of scenery - from snowy mountains to sandy beaches. With African villages and picturesque settler towns for resting your steed, you'll never tire of the road on these trips. Last year, South Africa (SA) was ranked highly in a number of travel awards and reports, which rated everything from beauty to infrastructure, proving that our country really is one of the best places to take to the open road. In their Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013, the World Economic Forum ranked South Africa as one of the top 50 countries in the world for the quality of our roads and government prioritization of the travel and tourism industry. Expat, Sine Thieme said, “Compared to the rest of Africa, South Africa’s road network is extensive and in good condition, but ... anyone planning on going on any selfdrive safaris will travel their share of dirt roads.” Dirt roads are the most exciting part of driving through South Africa, taking you from a bustling metropolis to the bush in just a few days drive. The Garden Route is our most famous route, ranked number 2 in the world by Rough Guides, “Mountains and vineyards on one side, and rocky shores and sandy beaches on the other.” Jill Starley-Grainger of the Luxury Traveler also ranked SA in her top two road trip. Even though she felt the Garden Route was “over hyped”, South Africa made it onto her list because she decided to take less traveled routes, and that, as they say, made all the difference. She cited South Africa as the best place for wildlife spotting, spying whales, penguins and baboons. CNN listed the road trip along our coastline as one of their top ten ultimate drives and warned that with, “Over 65 wineries along the way, will have you wishing you were a passenger rather than the driver. by James Bainbridge

In 2015 Don’t Work Harder,
Work Smarter.
I imagine that, like me, you say that you never have enough time and that you just cannot cope with 60 dozen things all at once. How on earth do you get out of that spiral? Many people never sit down and look at how to work smarter, rather than harder and even longer hours. Improve your time management skills
Easier said than done? Well, no actually, because there are a few simple rules that can really help you to manage time better. For example, when setting up a top priority task, you need to switch off the phone and ignore your email first. Then you need to abandon any ideas of multitasking as that will slow you down and ruin your focus. Finally, set a reasonable deadline and do everything in your power to meet it.
Expect failure and fight paranoia
When failure rears its ugly head, some people get a bit paranoid and fear that
this may become a trend. Projects will go wrong and failure should be expected rather than feared. Learning lessons from failure and analyzing what went wrong is the best way forward. “Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again.” -Richard Branson
Learn as much as you can
You should always be on a steep learning curve. Look at your skills profile and determine where you need to fill a gap. Talk to important connections and network in your niche. Keep up to date on trends and developments. It is a fact-changing world. When an opportunity arises, you will be the best equipped to seize it because you have never stopped learning. Just another way of working smarter. “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” -Mahatma Gandhi
Look after your greatest resource
No, your greatest resource is not time.

It is YOU. If you do not get enough sleep, exercise and relaxation, you find that you become less and less productive. You begin to work longer and longer hours, which is the exact opposite of what you want. What you should be doing is making sure you are in the best shape. It is useful to remember that you need a break of 15 minutes after every one and a half hours of work. Taking breaks and getting fresh air and exercise is one of the best ways of working smarter, not harder.
Don’t fall into the trap of working smarter and harder
As a society we are obsessed with doing everything smarter so we are more efficient and we save time all around. Great! The most important thing to remember is to accept when we are ready to switch off that computer and not fill up the time with even more work.

Look Good this Summer Summer is all about lightening your beauty routine—ditching your foundation and blush for a simple swipe of bronzer and letting your locks succumb to their natural waves. The flip side to warm weather's unbuttoned ease is its ability to make your whole look well. "Harmful UV rays are the most obvious culprit in causing wrinkles and brown spots, but they can also make your skin and hair appear dry, so you look older than your years," says dermatologist David H. McDaniel, MD, director of the AntiAging Research Institute in Virginia Beach, VA. Not to mention high humidity and heat can wreak on hair texture (hello, frizz!) and colour (hello, brassy!).
Tackle Shine
Replace your rich cleanser and face cream with a foaming gel and an oilfree daily lotion that has a minimum SPF 15. Carry a compact for midday touch-ups but don't cover your entire face with powder, says Sandy Linter, Lancome makeup artist. "Let your cheeks glow and just freshen the centre of your face."
Lighten Up
"Skip thick foundations and save your cream lipsticks for autumn," says Los Angeles makeup artist Napoleon Perdis. Makeup with a lighter texture—tinted moisturizer, cheek stain, bronzing gel, and lip gloss—will wear better in the heat and keep you looking fresh. And prep with primer, it's worth the extra step. Primer fills in fine lines, helps makeup go on more smoothly and, best of all, keeps it in place. Apply a thin layer to your skin, lids, even lips, so your tinted moisturizer, eye shadow, and lip colour don't move.
Go Smudge Proof
Waterproof eyeliner, shadow, mascara, and under eye concealer help prevent eye makeup from running or smearing in the heat. Want extra insurance? Use colour on the top lids only and dust translucent powder along your lower lash line.
Glow Girl
A shimmery bronzer instantly adds a sexy, healthy sheen to skin—but don't stop at your face, says New York
City makeup artist Ildiko. Normally big fluffy body brush is used to blend powder highlighter along the model's collarbone, decolletage, shoulders, and legs.
Summer Hair Repair: Deep-Fried
Damage to the hair's cuticle from straightening your strands with a dryer or flatiron will leave you with a halo of fuzz. The fix? Boost moisture with a leave-in conditioner daily plus a deep-treatment mask once a week. Then, before you break out the hot tools, apply anti-frizz serum to protect the cuticle against both heat damage and outdoor humidity.
Summer Scents
Swap your regular perfume for a fresh body splash and spritz away. Also, with sweat glands working overtime, your regular antiperspirant may not be enough. Upgrade to one of the newer clinical-strength formulas, which have higher levels of aluminium salts for extra protection.

That was obviously in the good old days, and guess what if you had a sibling in the same school you got a discounted rate! This included all textbooks and stationery as well. Guess that is why it was called the Good Old Days! Today we should be so lucky...The average cost of education now, whether it is at a private or public school has reached unbelievable proportions. That’s why the skyrocketing costs of education has many parents in a panic. Tuition costs have increased hugely in the past 20 years. It could cost up to R511 000 to send a child born in 2006 to university for four years – let alone how much it will cost to school them up to that point. This is just tuition fees – when you add the cost of books and other expenses like uniforms, school trips, sports equipment and extra-mural activities, you may well find yourself unable to afford the kind of education you’d like to give your children. It makes sense therefore, the sooner you start saving, the better. Building a positive future for our children is very important. Through quality investments and guaranteed portfolios, I can help you establish a brighter future for your children. An additional benefit to Education Policies is the premium waivers. Should you die or become permanently disabled, this policy will give you the peace of mind of knowing that your child’s policy will continue to be paid by the relevant company, thus ensuring that you do not lose out on the policy benefit and premiums that were already paid into your investment. As an Independent Broker who is contracted to all the major insurance companies, I have the ability to guide you on your investment journey. From the very first step I will be there to assist you in your financial choices, helping you to develop your investment potential and ultimately reach your personal goals. What better gift can you give your children this Christmas than having peace of mind knowing that, should anything happen to you, the costs of their education will be covered? Give your children the gift of a good education, Invest today for your child’s tomorrow...

233 Main Road, Malvern ARE YOU AWARE OF YOUR HIV STATUS? The statistics are shocking… even though we have access to more information and preventative strategies, the incidence of HIV is escalating. More alarming is the fact that in South Africa, KZN has the highest incidence of HIV infection with figures close to 1 in 3. ARE YOU AWARE OF YOUR HIV STATUS? Knowing your HIV status could change your life. Due to the stigma of this disease, it is often viewed as a death sentence. With the availability of newer medication and more information about treatment & prevention, it is possible for people with HIV to have a normal healthy life, including having children born free of HIV. But the starting point is testing for HIV. The tests are quick and can be done in your doctor’s room. However there are limitations. Let me explain… The 2 most common tests are the fingerprick HIV rapid test and the HIV 1/2 Elisa test. The HIV rapid test checks for the HIV antibody – this your body produces 8-12 weeks after an acute infection. Therefore, if you have been involved in any risky behaviour e.g unprotected intercourse, sharing iv needles (drug abuse), your first HIV rapid test may be negative even though you have the infection. This is due to you being in the acute infection stage (no antibodies produced yet) of the disease. Should this be the case, your doctor might suggest doing the HIV Elisa test – this tests for the HIV antigen. If infected with HIV, this test will be positive. A repeat HIV rapid test 3 months after the first test could also be suggested – by this time the body would have produced the HIV antibodies that were not detected earlier. If found to be infected with HIV, 2 other parameters need to be measured to guide treatment. These are CD4 count and viral load. Also, underlying concomitant infections eg. tuberculosis will have to be excluded. Treatment with antiretroviral medication has been improved to a triple regimen once daily tablet dosing, in most cases. This eases the pill burden and improves treatment adherence. Involvement of the family and the community, at large, helps to address this HIV burden. Be part of the solution – Make the ChangeNOW! Wishing you a Joyous and Positively uplifting Festive period.
Some people believe that healthy eating is expensive and that is why they buy unhealthy foods. However this is not necessarily the case, and all it takes is a bit of planning and preparation to follow and maintain a healthy, affordable diet. Follow our tips on how to eat well for your waistline and wallet. 1. Cooking makes cents – Prepare your own food rather than eating at restaurants (including fastfood restaurants). Self-prepared meals are almost always far less expensive. Preparing your own meals is not only great for the budget, but also means you will be using less processed foods, high in unhealthy fats, added sugars and salt. 2. Minimize meat – Animal proteins usually cost more, so rather than build a meal around meat, switch it up: pick legumes like beans or lentils for your main meal. These are an economical source of protein, are low in fat and high in heart-healthy

fibre. Incorporate meat sparingly and use legumes to extend your meals. 3. Pay more attention, pay less money – When eating mindfully, many people find they are satisfied with less food. Pay more attention when eating your meals – don’t be distracted by work at your desk or the TV. This will help you recognise when your body is full and you will end up eating less food. Eating less, in turn, can translate into buying less. So while mindfulness is excellent for health, it has an added budget benefit too. 4. Feel fuller for longer – Fats, like nuts, and protein sources, like fish and chicken, tend to cost more, but often you can be satisfied eating less of these “higher quality” foods. Fats and proteins tend to be more satiating, so it takes less of them to feel full. Highly processed foods, on the other hand, tend to make you hungry again sooner.

DEBT SOLUTIONS
Smart ways to mak Intelligent shopping and clever budget management is vital throughout the year, be it for holidays or special occasions. Finding creative ways to make your money go further means that shopping for unexpected events, little treats or once-in-a-while extravagances can be done guilt-free. Shop online: Online shopping gives you the power to
So we have finally approached the festive season. We are all looking forward to a well deserved break and our year end-bonuses. With all the hype of the season, we sometimes tend to get carried away with our spending and end up over-indebting ourselves which makes for a very difficult start to the New Year. On the flipside of this coin, we are already over-indebted and we are consumed by sleepless nights and ill-health due to this overwhelming debt. One of the available solutions for over-indebtedness is to apply for debt counselling, that is be placed under debt review.
compare prices from the comfort of your home, while saving on both fuel and parking costs. This could also be done at a time convenient to you, as you’re not restricted by mall hours. With Online shopping, there are not many temptation as per a retail store, so you only purchase what you require.
What is debt counselling/debt review?
you to save on your monthly household expenses. But
In 2007, The National Credit Act 34 of 2005 became effective in 2007. The act governs the process of debt counselling. Debt counselling is when a debtor applies to a Debt Counsellor to request the rescheduling of his debt as he is unable to satisfy in a timely manner all his obligations under all their credit agreements. It must be noted that over-indebtedness does not result in the debt being written off. Debtors who are natural persons (individuals), over-indebted and has an income.
Buy in bulk: Bulk buying at retailers like Makro can help
The debt review process • A Debt Counsellor must first determine if a debtor is over-indebted by completing various forms. • The Debt Counsellor will decide on 1 of 3 outcomes: 1. The debtor is not over-indebted. The application is rejected. 2. The debtor is not over-indebted but does have problems paying his/ her debts punctually. The Debt Counsellor recommends that the debtor and credit providers agree on a plan of debt arrangement. If they reach an agreement, it is filed as a consent order with the National Debtor Tribunal or a Magistrate's Court. If they do not reach an agreement, the Debt Counsellor makes a recommendation to the Magistrate's Court where it can make an appropriate order. 3. The debtor is over-indebted. The Debt Counsellor then recommends to the Magistrate's Court to make an appropriate order such as rescheduling the debtor's monthly payments to creditors. • The creditors will be notified of this conclusion through a legal notice. This process is finalised as soon as the Magistrate makes the debt review application an order of court. The biggest benefit of debt review is that you will only have to pay one fee per month that will cover all your expenses regarding your creditors. Once you registered for debt review, this will mean that you do not have to deal with any contact from your creditors and the debt counsellor will take control of that for you.
Contact us should you wish to be placed under debt review. Compliments of the season to all our readers.

e your money go further this holidays before you buy 24 boxes of washing powder, consider your storage limitations. Purchase items in bulk that are on special for that period, so you do not have to buy those items at regular price for the next few months.
Make a shopping list: Make a list of the things you need
before visiting the shops and stick to it to avoid spending on unnecessary items. If you feel that you “have to have” another pair of boots, set aside money each month for little luxuries and draw on that fund to pay for them, or use your rewards currency rather than blowing your budget.
Get cooking: Often entertaining friends at home is more
cost-effective than dining out, especially if you’re hosting a bring-and-share meal. Utilise free advice from foodie websites, who share food tips and recipes.
Sell it: Get rid of all your yesterday’s books, CDs, DVDs
and games via online marketplaces for a low, successbased fee. It’s a good way to get rid of the clutter; and make space for new additions to your entertainment collection with the money you’ve earned from selling your old items.
Find your fun: Visiting shopping centres for
entertainment will result in unintended spending, guaranteed! Consider trips to local museums, art galleries, education centres or parks instead. How about hosting a games or movie night for friends at your home? With a little creativity and a willingness to change your indulgent ways, there are many ways to have an enjoyable holiday without breaking the bank and it is normally the simplest things in life that will give us the most pleasure and joy.

Chances are a more sustainable you would also be a more active you since we now know how vital non-sedentary movement is to health. Of course, that’s easier said than done if you’re one of the millions who has trouble finding motivation or time to get moving. With the weather warmer, it might be the perfect time to set some sports goals that will help ensure you exercise. Be sure you visit your doctor first to make sure you’re healthy enough to try some of the ideas below.
Sign up for a race
Whether it’s a 5k, half marathon, obstacle race or triathlon, signing up for a race is sure-fire motivation. Once you pay the registration fee and know what date you’re working toward, it’s a lot easier to find the motivation to exercise. Pick a race, sign up and get ready to get moving.
Take dance lessons
Dancing is one of those activities that you burn calories without realizing it. If dancing is something you’ve always wanted to try, sign up for a local class or take a Zumba class at the gym.
Row, row, row your boat
Kayaking and canoeing are big calorieburners, so find a way to get on the water. Often parks will have kayak or canoe rentals for a reasonable price. Sure, the rowing machine at the gym is a good workout, but it doesn’t have nearly the appeal as floating down a local waterway.
Garden
When you exercise your green thumb, your whole body gets the benefit. Gardening builds strength, flexibility and endurance all while you tend to the produce that will one day be the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor.
