GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE As we head into spring, the staff and I are very excited about the prospect of the new season. Chef is continuing to evolve the menus in the club to offer better selection and more variety. Most recently, he has introduced a new banquet menu. Our hope is that you will consider your club rst when you are thinking of hosting an event.

We thank you for the continued support as our sales numbers show increases in all areas of a la carte service. We have focused the last six months on growth in these areas to better serve you and your families.

We are also happy to announce the addition of Jesse Mendes to our staff as Director of Aquatics. Jesse comes to Chapel Hill Country Club with a great record of swimming achievements and a desire for top level service. I am very optimistic that this will be our best pool season ever.

Spring is also a very critical time for your club to grow in membership.

This benets you in many ways, but most of all membership growth helps us control the cost to you and your family and creates good nancial heath for the club that you love. Currently we have about 80 openings and a goal this year of 60 new members. This is only possible with your support. Please consider the benets of belonging and recommend your friends and coworkers. This year’s membership drive has some great referral incentives for you, the member. Please contact either me or Jeff Earley with your referrals and questions.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Spring is in the air! The days are getting longer. The owers are starting to bloom. It’s a great time to enjoy the Chapel Hill Country Club.

You may have some rust on your golf swing, and your tennis feet may not be quite as quick. No worries. Get a jump on summer and enjoy our beautiful North Carolina spring.

While your friends in the Northeast get one more snowstorm, you’ll be walking the course or hitting the courts in shorts.

We have a phenomenal spring planned for you.

A few upcoming highlights: Chef Reale is introducing exciting new spring menu items. Our weekday hot buffet lunch is quick, healthy, and delicious. Have your business meeting at the club or meet a member for lunch. Have you ever experienced the Chef’s Table? For that special occasion (or just because), reserve the Chef’s Table and get ready for an amazing evening. You’ll have front seats to all the action in the kitchen as Chef Reale dazzles you with his gourmet cooking explaining each dish in mouthwatering detail. You will thank me for this advice. Our Easter extravaganza is second to none in town. Make your Easter reservation early, so you don’t miss this festive feast.

The tennis programs are in full swing. Adults and Juniors are getting ready for USTA league play, Friday Night Doubles is back, and there are clinics available for everyone.

Memorial Day is right around the corner, and the Parent/ Child Round Robin is always a highlight of the festivities.

We are looking forward to a phenomenal golf season.

This winter Craig and the maintenance crew have been working diligently to upgrade our golf course. Hundreds of trees have been cut down to improve green conditions.

If the weather cooperates, we’re poised to have the best course conditions in years. The golf committee is working hard to put together diverse opportunities for all to enjoy golf. From the youngest juniors to our seasoned seniors, we have something for you. Stop by the Pro Shop and talk with one of our golf professionals about how you can play more and improve your game this year.

Spring is also the most important time of the year for strengthening our club. How? Membership. We have put together an exciting spring membership drive. Invite your friends and colleagues out to the club. We have special incentives both for the primary referring member as well as the new member.

ABOUT THE HOUSE Every good organization needs goals, preferably achievable ones. As we roll into spring let me touch upon a few of the things we’ll be trying to do at CHCC during 2013.

First, the not-so-welcome news that one of our goals is to increase overall restaurant pricing by ve percent and banquet prices by 10 percent. You know why.

Costs are going up, as they inevitably to do. At least non-members, who comprise many of the banquet-goers, will bear the brunt of the increase. Although I don’t want to seem inhospitable.

The United States Department of Agriculture predicts that in 2013, the cost of every category of food will increase.

Fresh vegetables are predicted to go up four to ve percent and dairy products 3.5 to 4.5 percent.

It is best that we stay ahead of the curve.

Chef Jimmy Reale is not one to offer stale menus. Hence his promise to change our menus two times per season.

Chef Jimmy is also creating an event to be held for the Chapel Hill schools called “The Chef’s Challenge”. This

event will be held at the schools with the intention of promoting healthier lunches for the children. A worthy goal, indeed.

The club will also do a small off-premises catering promotion in March for the State Employees Credit Union. CHCC General Manager Don Hunter sees this as a way to develop a part of our business that has always been very at.

Have you heard about our summer camp? It will be eight weeks long, will include golf, shing, tennis, cooking, soccer, swimming and crafts and will cost $2,600 for all eight weeks. If your child can’t do the whole thing, he or she can pay $350 per week for whatever participation is possible.

Camp hours will be 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. The goal is 35 children for the rst year.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS This month, we welcome new members Constance Hughes and Robert Bonczek, and Joe and Ashley Modisett. We are always excited to see our club family grow, and please join us in inviting our newest members into the traditions and activities of the club.

every new member needs the sponsorship of two current members, and we hope you will share the news with your interested friends and neighbors. It’s the perfect time to join with opportunities for reduced intiation fees and a full summer of activities approaching quickly.

As dogwoods and tulips start to appear warmer weather sparks the urge to get out and play.

An inux of prospective members looking for a new place to recreate and socialize visit the club, and we are happy to show them around and help them quickly see all we have to offer. We will be hosting a New Member Party on March 24th. We invite you to bring a friend who might like to join between 1 and 4 pm for a great introduction to our club.

The Spring Membership Drive also benets sponsoring members who will earn anywhere from $300 to $1000 in goods and/or services at the club when their friend becomes a member.

We are also planning a Member Block Party on April 28th.

This will be a family friendly afternoon of fun, and we would love for you to bring prospective member friends to this event, as well.

This Spring, we are offering great incentives for new members.

GREEN AERIFICATION Green aerication will take place on March 6th and 7th. Please note that only nine holes will be open these days.

THE TRADITION 2013 This year’s Men’s Member-Guest will take place June 13-16th. We invite you to come to registration on Saturday, April 13 beginning at 7 AM. If you are unable to attend registration, your spouse or another member may register you. We ask that you be fully committed by Sunday, May 12th and the last day to register will be June 2nd. We look forward to your participation this year!

COURSE CONDITIONS Winter projects continue on schedule. Leaf removal is winding down as we start to make our nal sweep. Tree work has been the focus. Aeration is scheduled to start Wednesday, March 6th. This is usually done on a Monday when the club is closed. This year, in addition to our normal spring aeration, a “deep- tine aeration” will also be done.

For this, an outside contractor is necessary with only so many available dates. The golf shop staff is working with the members to schedule golf accordingly.

It is too early to tell, but Spring Dead Spot (Ophiosphaerella korrae and O. herpotricha) may be an issue this spring.

This is a disease in bermudagrass that occurs in the fall and appears in the spring as circular patches. Since this past fall was very dry, there is a good chance our fairways and roughs are affected more than previous years. It has been about 8 years since the last signicant occurrence.

This disease is not serious but unsightly for a few weeks as the bermudagrass comes out of dormancy.

The chemical controls that help prevent Spring Dead Spot are only moderately effective.

The SMGA will be hosting their annual opening day breakfast and golf on March 5th. If you aren’t already afliated with the Senior Men’s Golf Association and would like to participate, please contact the Golf Shop!

The Women’s Golf Association’s opening playday is scheduled for March 19th and will begin at 11 AM with a practice shotgun start.

WGA & NIFTY NINERS NEWS Greetings everyone,

SMGA NEWS Our spring season starts with an opening day on Tuesday March 5th that features a 7:30pm breakfast followed by a Superball tournament at 9:00pm. Opening Day is on Tuesday this year because we have the opportunity to play the day before the Spring Aeration. The event is complementary. We welcome all members for breakfast whether or not they wish to participate in the golf event. You should mark on your calendar several key events that are planned during the year in addition to the weekly golng opportunities.

WOMEN’S GOLF FUNDAMENTALS WITH SALLY AUSTIN THURSDAY, MARCH 21ST, 1 PM

LPGA Teaching Pro Sally Austin will be teaching a one hour clinic for beginner ladies on the most basic fundamentals of golf. Kate Eifrig and I, Laura Ellgen, decided to send our news item jointly for this March/April issue as both organizations are happy to announce some very cool news concerning our play days for the 2013 golf year.

Yes, things may be gridlocked in Washington but here at CHCC we are taking care of business! A bipartisan team of Nifty Niners and WGA members put their heads together to come up with a solution for improving our play days. Starting with each organization’s rst ofcial play day (April 2nd for the WGA and April 4th for the Nifty’s) we will have online sign-ups available to all members for play days, clinics and other special events. In addition most regular play days (excluding Saturdays) will be a shotgun format. We really think these changes will streamline our play days and Kate and I know we can count on our members’ support (and patience) as we roll out the new system.

NEW AQUATICS DIRECTOR In just a a matter of weeks, when weather permits, the pool will be alive with swimmers and sunbathers.

We are excited to announce that we have hired a new Aquatics Director, Jesse Mendes. Jesse is a Chapel Hill native, and 2012 graduate of the University of North Carolina. Jesse arrives at Chapel Hill with an impressive list of academic and athletic accolades. A small sampling includes US National Open Water Qualiďƒžer in 2009, 2010, and 2011, North Carolina Male Open Water

Swimmer of the Year in 2011, and recipient of the Hill Carrow Award for 2011-2012. Jesse’s list of academic and athletic accolades is extensive. Jesse has coached swimming at Meadowmont and for the Chapel Hill Swim League. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, and is aiming for a career in medicine.

Jesse will be directing all operations and staff at the pool, as well as coaching the Sharks Swim Team. We are elated to have Jesse on the Chapel Hill Country Club staff, and we know our members will be impressed. We look forward to a spectacular summer and the growth and expansion of our aquatics program.

CHCCR SHARKS SUMMER SWIM TEAM

SPLASH into summer with the Sharks!

The temperature outside may still be chilly, but the swim team committee is already hard at work planning a fantastic season of summer swimming here at the Chapel Hill Country Club.

We are thrilled to announce the new Head Coach of the CHCCR Sharks, Jesse Mendes. Jesse is a UNC Graduate and World Champion Swimmer. He was Captain of the UNC Men’s Varsity Swim Team, Captain of the North Carolina Aquatic Club, Captain of Chapel Hill High School’s State Championship Swim Team and has even coached our Sharks as an assistant a few years back.

Jesse comes to us with years of competitive swimming experience and lots of enthusiasm. He is excited to be leading our Sharks this summer. We are calling all swimmers, from 6 and under to 13 years and up! Even if swimming isn’t your child’s “main” sport, summer swimming is fantastic cross training for football, soccer, lacrosse, eld hockey, etc.

The Sharks will be holding Swim Team Registration and Information Night on Wednesday, April 10th from 6pm-8pm in the main clubhouse. It’s “Family Night”, so come on up to the club, have some dinner and learn about our fantastic swim team! Coach Jesse will be there to meet and greet all prospective and returning Sharks and parents.

The CHCCR Sharks will host a complimentary Ice Cream Social for registered swimmers and their families on April 14th from 1pm-3pm at the pool. You may also register your swimmer on that day.

ADULT SPRING TEAM CHALLENGE APRIL 13TH, 9:00AM-3:00PM This team event, our most popular for years now, can make you, an ordinary tennis player feel like one of the members of the Davis Cup team! Every game you and your partner win is good for the team, and the fate of the team can rely on your nal doubles match!

Format: The uniqueness of the format is the reason for the popularity of this event. There are six teams, 3 men and 3 women per team. On each team there are 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 players. Each round will consist of all doubles (men’s, women’s and mixed) and you will play with each of your teammates before the event is over. The most consistent team each year ends up in victory lane.

Spirit: What makes this weekend so special is that all different levels of players are represented on each team.

The teams will be assigned by Lindsay, Derek, Jarrod and Jaime, with the utmost attention paid to equality.

2013 JUNIOR USTA TEAM TENNIS LEAGUES

We have a total of 15 teams this season representing CHCC. Each team will not have a match every week at CHCC, but please keep in mind as morning court reservations may be tight during the season as all league matches are reserved for the entire 2.5 month season. With 15 teams here, we could have close to 70 scheduled home matches!

Online registration for teams began in January. If your child is not a member of the USTA, the year enrollment is only $19, and for those 10 & under who are New to tennis, the USTA is offering the 1st year Free to juniors! Any questions, please contact the pro shop at 932-2855. The season charge for each child participating in the league will be $40. This will cover snacks for all home matches, equipment and the coach’s time for each match.

ATTENTION CAPTAINS: On the mornings that we have 2 home teams playing here at 9:30 taking up a total of 10 courts, courts 1-6 and the hard courts will be used for league play if courts 7-10 have not been reserved by members or requested by members for their morning lessons. Team captains should contact the opposing captains in advance of this policy.

Matches will begin the weekend of March 16th. This year we have two 12 & under teams and a 14 & under team competing in the Durham League.

MEMORIAL DAY PARENT/CHILD ROUND ROBIN BIN MONDAY MAY 27TH, 10:00AM-12:00PM This has always been a popular event with great participation. Junior participants must be 8 years of age and above and be able to serve and keep score. Adults interested in playing should contact the Prop Shop in the event that we have juniors who need an adult partner. We will have the Quickstart format for those kids who are 10 and under once again this year. We would love to see ALL 14 courts used this year for this fun event!

Three divisions (Bronze, Silver and Gold) will accommodate various ages and abilities. Pro Shop gift certicates will be awarded to the winners of each division. The cost of this tournament is $10.00. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Stick around for a pro exhibition afterwards during lunch…

Lindsay Benton, Derek Boone, Jarrod Randle and Jaime Montalvo will mix it up on court 1 for everyone to cheer on.

CHCC/GOVERNOR’S CLUB HOSTS THE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS - APRIL 19-21 Please mark this weekend on your calendar. There will be no courts open for member reservations during this tournament. This is a USTA Sanctioned Tournament. We will be using all 10 clay courts and the 4 hard courts starting Friday at 4pm through Saturday. Please check with the pro shop for Sunday’s clay court availability as this day should be a lighter day for tournament matches. Approximately 150 junior tennis players from across the state will compete, including many of our CHCC juniors. Please come out to watch the action or volunteer to help with the tournament.
