President’s Message This Winter has left most of us waiting for Spring to arrive more than ever before, myself included. Many of us have still found ways to get out and utilize the Club despite the obvious challenges. Th e Board and I have been busy focusing our attention on what lies ahead and I have some exciting opportunities to share. First, we would like to extend an invitation to create more “givers” at the Chapel Hill Country Club. So many of you have given back to the Club in so many ways, which is part of what makes our Club so special. Some of you have given back by serving on committees, by sharing your ideas, by helping to organize events, by encouraging participation, and it makes all the difference. We ask that you join us. I am extending an invitation to all of you, and many of you have already stepped up this year. Small or large, we have opportunities if you would like to help or give back. Second, for most of us, the Club has become a great gathering place. We come together with our friends and colleagues to share in sports, friendly competition, socializing, dining and enjoying all the Club has to offer. So with that in mind, we look to Spring for new growth and opportunity. Along with our General Manager, Don Hunter, the Membership Committee and its chair Jay Kennihan, have been hard at work creating what we hope will be one of our most successful membership drives in Club history. New Club members equals new possibilities for ‘us’ the Club. Each one of us makes the Club what it is. The more that each one of us contributes to the Club by means of participation and utilization, the more goals we can achieve. We would like to make the membership drive exciting and fun, as well as successful. Th e Membership Drive of 2014 will have a theme and it will bring with it a Chance for rewards and opportunities. One of you will win a “DUES FREE YEAR” at the Club! If you are the primary sponsor for a new member this year, you will get one month of free dues. For each new member you encourage to join, you will have your name entered in a drawing that will take place at our year-end holiday celebration. The drawing will include things like one year free dues, one year of free golf carts, or even your own parking space for a year! We are ready for a fun and effective drive and we hope that you are too. Your participation is key in helping us to achieve our goals to expand services and improve the property.

Jesse Mendes Aquatics Director 919.932.2852 jmendes@chapelhill-cc.com

Stay tuned for more details on the Membership Drive. It is my hope that you believe in the Club as much as I do. I also hope that you and your family have found ways to engage with our membership, because the Chapel Hill Country Club is so much more than a building, golf course, tennis courts or pool. Th e real Club is the people.

About the House Greetings everyone from your House Committee, Hopefully by the time you are reading this, our wintry weather will be a thing of the past and we’ll be enjoying all the signs of a beautiful NC spring. And with the onset of Spring, House Committee members Starr Basmajian, Laura Ellgen and Stan Eskridge will be conducting a bit of spring cleaning, starting with a walk-through of the Club to look for signs of wear and tear or what might need fixing or replacing. Please contact Starr, Laura or Stan if you see something in or around the Clubhouse that needs some attention. We would also like to announce three new members to the House Committee: Mark Attwood, an architect, Ed Falvo, and Jann Stiven, an interior designer. Another initiative the House Committee is addressing is our men’s and women’s lockers. There is quite a long waiting list for lockers, so the HC encourages those members who seldom – or never – use their lockers to consider giving them up (contact Don Hunter). In addition, we are looking at better utilization of space in each locker room and providing an area for members and guests to stow shoes. And finally, as part of the Board of Directors’ retreat in January, Board members visited two local clubs, North Ridge and the Carolina Country Club. It was the observation of the group that Chapel Hill CC compares very favorably – particularly in ambience, food and friendliness – against these two fine clubs. Sincerely, The House Committee

I play basketball and I run or walk my dog (when mom makes me). What’s your favorite food? Steak and mashed potatoes. Who are your favorite tennis players, besides the CHCC pros of course? John Isner (I copied him with the backwards hat) and Rafael Nadal. CONGRATS to Rutledge Smith for all of his hard work this past year! Who’s next?!

Senior Men’s Golf Association As we anxiously await Spring and the start of our 2014 golf season, I thought this would be a good time to remind everyone what the SMGA is. The SMGA is a golf and social organization dedicated to CHCC male members 55 years and older since 1983. GOLF • Wednesday morning tournaments (playdays featuring various competitive formats) • informal group play on Tuesday and Friday mornings • ten outings at other local clubs (interclubs) • four major competitive tournaments: Member/Member Member/Guest Match Play (President’s Tournament) Medal Play (Senior Championship) • Co-Ed Golf (SMGA invites the Ladies) SOCIAL • Spring and Fall banquets (with wife or significant other) • Spring and Fall breakfast • monthly SMGA Supper Club “fine dining” (with wife or significant other) This year we have sent surveys to members and non-members in an effort to improve participation and membership. As we get responses, we will let everyone know the results and perceptions. THINGS WE ARE DOING IN 2014 • flighting once a month for Wednesday playdays • working with the Golf Pro Shop to launch Th ursday afternoon 4:30 pm 9 hole playday • working with the Golf Pro Shop for SMGA tee times one Sunday per month THINGS WE ARE WORKING ON • PGA type Fed Ex year-long point system • competitive team competition with outside clubs • participating with the Club in the USGA initiative “Tee It Forward” and looking to see if there are things the SMGA can do now I am sure this list will grow as the survey results and ideas come in. We continue to add to and improve our website (www.smgagolf.com). Tournaments, dates, roster, news, electronic sign up and course conditions are just some of the things on the site. We are continuously working with the Club to allow more sharing with the Club site.

Nifty Niners News

BRRRRR……… As I write this article, there is snow on the ground and freezing temperatures. By the time you read this, I hope the weather has warmed up and the thaw is well under way! Th e good news is Spring is around the corner and the WGA Board has been busy planning an incredibly fun year. We have mixed up the formats and brought back an old favorite of Match Play. And after reading everyone’s input, we have eliminated any gross winners except for our overall WGA Champion. We will kick off our season with a business meeting on Tuesday, March 25 at 10:00 am in the Columbia Room. This will be a brief meeting to introduce the new board, discuss some changes in play days and approve the 2014 budget. Then, Sally Austin will give the first clinic of the year, focusing on rules and a warm up to the golf season. Look for the sign up on our Google docs. I hope to see everyone there!

Thus far, the winter has been very uncooperative for playing golf. Hopefully it will warm up and dry out so we can get together on the course soon! Until the official season begins on April 3, we have tee times available to us on Thursdays starting at 10:30 am.

I would like to thank BJ and Mark Attwood for opening their home to us for our Holiday Party held on January 10. Despite the torrential downpour that left one poor car stuck in the mud, we had a wonderful time with great food, wine and of course our golfing friends! Thanks to Laura Ellgen for organizing this increasingly popular event. Hoping for better weather next year!

The NNGA dues cover clinics given by Sally Austin. The clinics are on Wednesdays at 10:00 am. Please note that the first clinic is on Putting and will be held on March 26. Sally would like to know how many to expect at each clinic. I have added the clinics to our Google doc so you can sign up online. Our 2014 season begins on Th ursday, April 3. We will play golf and then have a meeting as we eat lunch. We will have a shotgun start at 9:00 am. Please be present and ready to play prior to 9:00 am. Camaraderie Day with the WGA is on Tuesday April 8. We will play a 9 hole superball followed by a luncheon. On April 10, the Nifty Niners are inviting any female CHCC member to join us for 9 holes of golf. At 5:00 pm that afternoon, we will gather near the Golf Pro Shop and then walk 9 holes of the course filling in divots. Beverages are provided on the course. Th ere will be a member charge dinner to follow the Divot Party. A 9 hole friendly tournament, “The Divorce Open,” will be held at 4:00 pm on April 17. This is an alternate shot tournament and is followed by a dinner. We will host the TRI-9 interclub event on April 24. The start time is 9:30 am, with breakfast to precede play. We need a lot of our members to sign up for this event!

I would like to again congratulate our TIP team captained by Lin Wright for winning the 2013 season and bringing home the trophy. Many of the team members attended a luncheon at Prestonwood Country Club and accepted the trophy on behalf of all CHCC. Thanks to Lin for all her years as TIP chair! Jane Lamm is our new leader and has great plans to keep this trophy for another year!! I am sure everyone is as anxious as I am to get out and dust off our shoes, polish the irons and tee that beautiful little ball up. So get ready and see you all soon! Diane Koenigshofer WGA President

16

Kate Eifrig NNGA President

The Nifty Niners would like to invite any female CHCC member to come and play with us on April 10 at 9:00 am! Many of us will stay for lunch afterward and would love for you to join us and get to know us better! Please contact Kate Eifrig at 919.929.2600 or 919.672.6300 or keifrig@nc.rr.com to sign up.
