Holiday Celebrations at CHCC This Thanksgiving, Chapel Hill Country
Club hosted approximately 50 reghters, police men & women from the Chapel Hill area. The Club invited these groups as a “thank you ” for protecting our community each and every day. President’s Message
My name is Jay Kennihan and I have
the honor and privilege of being elected by your Board of Directors here at Chapel Hill Country Club to serve as your President through 2017. I am succeeding Mike Brogren, who served a two-year term as your President, beginning in 2014. Mike has also served on and chaired a number of committees, was a past vice president on two seperate occasions, and has worked tirelessly on behalf of all of us over the years. If I could ask a favor, when you see Mike on campus, stop what you are doing and offer a thank you to him and a pat on the back. There are few folks who have devoted the amount of time and effort that Mike has over the years, and I know he would appreciate hearing from you. In addition, a thank you is in order to our departing directors; Andrea Kottong, Neely
McLaughlin, Tradd McCrary and David Baddour. These folks served in a number of capacities, chairing committees as well as serving in their roles as Directors these last three years; a job well done. New to your Board are Lee Wollman, Gus Neville, Kenny Allman and Ron Merritt who will be tasked with committees to chair along with their duties as Directors. Our 911 projects are well underway with the renovations of the pool complex, and as you read this, the new HVAC system is set to be installed. The resurfacing of the tennis hard courts has been completed including the addition of Pickle Ball lines, which leaves the pump station for the irrigation system as our nal project. Work on the irrigation pumps and wet well will begin in late January and should take less than 2 weeks to complete. Among other things, we will explore membership levels as they relate to the budget for this year, as well as how they relate to a mortgage note that comes due in 2020. Your Finance and Membership Committees are looking at all possibilites with regards to how interest rates will affect our new mortgage and what we can do to lessen the impact of expected higher rates in 2020 and beyond. More on that over the next month or so as our strategies become clearer. Our committee chairs are putting together their committees for 2016, and if you have an interest in serving on any committee here at CHCC, please send me an email and I will forward your contact information to the appropriate committee chair. a happy and healthy new year. 2016 will be a year to remember here at your Club. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few of the improvements you will experience at the Club. Brace yourself, you ’re going to see the word “NEW ” a lot! • NEW Club website will be online January 1. Over the next 3 months, we will be converting the Club ’s operation system over to Jonas which, when completed March 1, will provide online tee times, court and dining reservations; online statements and bill pay; the ability to create special interest proles which will help the Club target specic areas of Member interests, just to name a few of the many features. As we get closer to full implementation, we will offer drop-in classes at the Club to show you all the bells and whistles of the new system. • NEW “Members ’ Only ” nights on the last Saturday of every month. Beginning on Saturday, January 30th, with an Oyster Festival. More details on page 7. • NEW Pool Deck Service. When the newly renovated pool opens in May, you will enjoy food and beverage service on the pool deck! Chef Jimmy is already working on new menus and the new Jonas system will allow quick and efcient deck service by trained and friendly staff. • NEW Member Business Alliance will kick-off in January. The MBA will be the Club ’s own Chamber of Commerce which gives Members the opportunity and ability to network their businesses within the Club. The MBA will also feature a Member Business Directory that members can access through the web-
site when shopping for products and services from our member-owned busineses. • NEW Lawson ’s Coffee Cafe daily in Lawson ’s Bar. Why wait to get to Starbucks or Caribou Coffee for your morning coffee x when the best coffee in town will be served in the Club. • New Junior Golf Program beginning this spring! The CHCC Garden Club will meet the
second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 PM. We are currently still working on the Chef ’s Herb Garden, and are looking forward to beginning the rst ladies tee box. We plan to plant daffodils and helibors as they are both deer resistant. Our next meeting is January 14th. Craft Club
The rst meeting for the Craft Club was a suc-
cess. The Club met in December and created wonderful holiday themed crafts including; wreaths and snowglobes. Everyone who attended the event left with their craft and a smile on their face. All ages were welcomed. Future meetings will seperate the adults and children. Our next meeting is TBD. Craft ideas as well as special guest suggestions are welcomed. Activites CHCC Youth
I
t has been an exciting Fall at the Club, and I am looking forward to all that 2016 beholds. CHCC youth now has a dedicated room to spend time with friends. The Terrace Room has an air hockey table donated by the Stewart family, a Ping Pong table donated by Tim Mann, Xbox with Kinect, as well as ample craft supplies, costumes & age appropriate toys. The room is currently staffed on Wednesday and Friday (Kids Club) evenings. The playground is also a great haven for the Clubs youth to blow off some steam. Thank you to all our members that made this happen.

amp registration begins in January. Be on the lookout for more information on our website over the next few weeks. Camp at the Club provides a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. Meals and snacks are included. Parents need only pack a day bag with sunscreen and swimwear.

DPAC Broadway Series
The DPAC Broadway Series trips have been
even better this season with the addition of the Broadway Lounge with a private bar, snacks and a fabulous red carpet room waiting for us when we arrive. The room also provides private restrooms so that we don ’t have to nd the “line begins here ” sign on the far end of the lobby at intermission. The objective for next season is to obtain closer season tickets, although I am happy that we were able to work out being on the orchestra level for this season for all shows. Melanie joins us as our new
Member Relations Manager. Originlly from Toronto, Melanie attended college at Ringling College of Art & Design where she studied Interior Design, and later went on to the University of South Florida where she studied Hospitality Management and Business Administration. Before joinging us Melanie worked as the Membership Relations Coordinator at the Sarasota Yacht Club. You may have seen Melanie taking pictures at recent Club events or have spoken to her over the phone when making your reservations for events and/or dining. anica Barfoot is our new Banquet Manager here at Chapel Hill Country Club. A native of Canada, Danica relocated to Raleigh with her family in 2003. She received her degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Appalachian State Universtiy in 2013 which allowed her to study International Hospitality in Edinburgh, Scotland for six months. Her previous experience includes internships with Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh, NC and the Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach, NC. Most recently, she joins us from Walt Disney World where she was a coordintor at the Boardwalk Inn and EPCOT ’s Annual Food and Wine Festival. 1/3 cup Pumpkin, canned or fresh 1/4-1/2 cup Milk 1/4 Tsp Vanilla 1/2 Tsp Cinnamon 1/16 Tsp Cloves 1/16 Tsp Nutmeg 3 Tsp Pure Maple Syrup 2 cups Vanilla Ice Cream
Butternut Squash & Apple Soup Ingredients:
1 Tbsp Vegetable Oil 8lbs Butternut Squash, peeled & medium chop 1/2 cup White Onion, medium chop 1/2 cup Carrot, peeled & medium chop 1/2 cup Celery, medium chop 1/2 gal Chicken Stock 2 cup Apple Cider 1/2 cup Half & Half 1 Tsp Nutmeg, Ground 2 Tsp Thyme, chopped 2 Tsp Rosemary, chopped 1 Tbsp Cider Vinegar To Taste Salt & Vinegar
Method for Soup:
1. In a large pot over medium heat add oil. 2. Add Onions, Carrots and Celery, and saute for approximately 2-3 minutes. 3. Add Butternut Squash and season with salt & pepper, then saute for an additional 4-5 minutes. 4. Add Chicken Stock, Apple Cider, Nutmeg, Thyme, Rosemary and cook until squash is soft. 5. rost Delays - As we come into some colder weather over the next few months, please consider frost delays when making early tee times. Make sure to check golf conditions on the website before coming out to the course. Bag Drop Schedule - The bag drop will be manned from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Tuesday - Sunday, times may change due to weather. Feel free to drop off your clubs prior to parking. Bag Storage - If you are interested in storing your clubs and/or push cart in our bag storage, contact the pro shop, 919-932-2857. There will be limited availability in the New Year. Bag fee is $100 and bag/cart fee is $150 per person. New Email Address - Please update our contact information. The golf pro shop will be using a new email for golf related questions and concerns. Christmas Cup 2015 We ended the year with 68 players in this year ’s Christmas Cup! The winning team included Mike Brogren, Ken Allman, Duane Davis & Mark Johnson (all pictured). They all enjoyed a drink of champagne out of the “Christmas Cup ” to celebrate their big win. What ’s new? • Having play available for 9 and 18 holes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and two Saturdays a month. • Golf instruction will continue for different skill levels with more dates to choose from if one doesn ’t work for you. • Two guest passes annually to be used on the Play Days of your choice. • Combined meetings and social events with a larger group of participants, and less duplication of resources and responsibilities. • A single directory of all lady golfers and other golf tips & resources. • LGA support of area high school girls ’ golf. • New golfer “buddy ” and mentorship. Tennis Pro Message
As we bring 2015 to a close, I ’d like to
take a moment to thank all the members and staff at CHCC that contributed to the successes we had over the course of this past year. Professionally the year started off with bringing in Mic Wallace, USTA Pennsylvania Pro of the year as our new Head Professional. Then after 25 years in the business, Lindsay Benton was named USPTA North Carolina Tennis Director of the Year. As a staff, we have improved and increased communications with our members through website updates, a new Facebook page, and improvements in our email communication. On the competition front, we had 18 USTA Adult League Teams in the spring, which is an increase from previous years. Additionally, two of the teams advanced to the State Playoffs. We also had many of our members playing on higher level teams after receiving rating bumps at the end of 2014. Our juniors continue to improve, as reected in their rankings across their respective age groups. Many of the members who have continued to support our programs year round received the greatest increase in ranking and performance. Our junior clinic and lesson numbers have remained steady. The Junior Team Tennis was well represented by CHCC at the State Tournament bringing home 2 sportsmanship awards at each level. Our socials continue to keep members engaged and playing on our courts, and Holiday events have increased in participation. Family Tennis events such as Memorial Day Parent-Child round robin brought out some of our biggest numbers to date. It was great to see entire families playing and enjoying this lifetime sport. Our Har Tru courts continue to be the best courts in this area - hands down.
In 2016, we plan to increase our junior member play with the addition of new Junior tennis teams. There will be more opportunites for our juniors to stay active on our courts at the Club. We have already added weekly clinics for our Adults to improve their game play. We will likely see this reected in the results of game play come Spring time. With the implementation of the new JONAS club management software in the early months of 2016, we will continue to improve our communication with our membership. This software will enable us to discover new ways to keep members active and engaged in the Club. Finally, we are happy to welcome the play of Pickleball to our Club ’s courts. Our newly renished hard courts feature the addition of pickleball lines. See you on the court! - Mic Wallace
Winter Clay Court Conditions
F
or the winter months, the court conditions phone message will be posted by 7:30 AM (or later in the event of inclement weather - rain, snow, sleet, or temperatures in the teens or 20 ’s). If temperature drops below 32 degrees, the soft courts will freeze and will be unplayable in the morning until after 12:00 PM. If we have a hard freeze (mid to low 20 ’s or below), the courts will be unplayable until mid afternoon and possibly all day.
Spring Clay Courts Resurfacing The Clay Courts will be resurfaced at the
end of February started on the 29th, to get them ready for our busy spring USTA season here at CHCC. We hope to have this project completed by March 9. All 10 clay courts will have the

lines ripped up, and the old material will be raked off the court and hauled off. Once that is complete, new material will be evenly dispersed and rolled perfectly to get them ready for the brand new lines to be nailed to the ground. We will block off courts 1-6 or 7-10 to allow members the chance to still play on either side during this time. Please check with the pro shop for further details as this time approaches.

With our Hard Courts newly resurfaced
and lined, we have jumped on board with the fastest growing racquet sport in America with Pickleball at CHCC. All 4 of our hard courts are lined for pickleball with a dark blue line (pictured above) so to not be distracting when playing tennis. The tennis net will have to be lowered only 2 inches when playing, so plese be sure to check in with the tennis staff before playing. The tennis shop also has paddles and balls for you to use, please feel free to call the shop to reserve your court and equipment and get out there and play! Rules are also posted on the hard courts. The basics of Pickleball: 1. A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. 2. Played indoors and outdoors on a badmintonsized court and a slightly modied tennis net. 3. Played with a paddle and a plastic “whife ” ball.
