CHCC Jr. Club Championship
We had a total of 35 juniors compete in Junior Club Championships this year! If you were able to take the time out to watch them play, you saw some great tennis, along with great sportsmanship, perfect attitudes and overall good fun had by everyone! Thank you to all the juniors and parents for making this year’s tournament another successful one! All the coaches here were extremely proud of the way the juniors played and look forward to the upcoming fall season. President’s Message It seems like we have been on the golf mats all summer. We had to move to the mats because some of our members or their guests, in spite of our policy and warnings, continue to hit balls over the net at the end of the range. We are about to move back on the grass as we have ordered some restricted flight practice balls. They should not go over the net. The Board asks that if you are hitting a driver, use these balls, they are yellow in color. You can use the standard white colored balls for everything else. Greens typically have to be resurfaced about every 20 years. Ours were built in 1999, so we are quickly approaching a time when we have to decide “what is the best putting surface for our membership, Bent or some sort of Bermuda hybrid?” Not surprisingly, I get comments from advocates for both surfaces. Last year we came close to losing several greens, but this year Craig proved to us that with some additional resources he could maintain our Bent greens in the most severe summer weather conditions, heat and humidity. But he could also maintain a Bermuda surface. So, what does the future hold? Last year to prevent a knee jerk reaction, we appointed a committee to study the issue. The results are still not in. We are trying to learn from Hope Valley, who planted Bermuda greens last year. What are the true costs, hidden expenses, maintenance challenges, member comments, etc? We should be able to make a decision in time for the 2013 golfing season. Resurfacing greens with Bermuda takes about 8-10 weeks, requires the removal of many trees on an east-west axis that shade the greens, and must be done in the hottest weather, July and August. I’ve been asked, why we added the Tar Heel Blue Tees on 7 holes. It’s simple; it makes the game more fun for some of our female members. We already have 4 sets of tees for our men. And most select the set of tees that makes it more fun for them and their playing partners. It’s the norm, and our handicap system correctly calculates handicaps from each of these tees. What we didn’t have was a second set of forward tees for our women golfers. Do we need them, yes. And in fact, the USGA and PGA have partnered to sponsor the “Tee It Forward” initiative; encouraging golfers to play from the set of tees that make the game more fun for them. Just read any of the stats from the PGA nationwide research and you’ll see it works. • • • •
56% played faster 56% are likely to play golf more often 83% hit more lofted clubs into greens 85% had more fun
Golf will always be a macho sport and golfers will always be stubborn, but give “Tee It Forward” a chance, play a round from one set of the tees forward from your regulr tees-you might find your golf to be more fun. Ron Johnston Club President 3
Membership Message The break in the weather during the past few weeks serves as a reminder that autumn is rapidly approaching. As summer draws to a close, things are just taking off at the club! There are several exciting events on tap this fall season that promise fun for all of our members. While we had a successful membership drive, our work is never finished! This is the ideal time to bring your friends out to see the club at its finest. Why not ask a colleague to join you for Friday on the Front Porch? Or perhaps invite your neighbors to join you at the pool to enjoy the last of the summer sun? The opportunities to show off your “home away from home” are endless, and we encourage you to take full advantage!
About the House I suspect that throughout history, as long as there have been carts, chariots, cars or what have you, parking has been a problem. Romans probably went outside the lines, and up on the grass, with their chariots. Settlers blocked access to frontier town barber shops with their wagons.
We also painted stripes at the practice range at the end of the lower parking lot, where people used to squeeze in and make it more difficult for golf carts to maneuver. As for those of you who park off the pavement near the range, on grass or pine straw, you know you’re doing wrong. You don’t need white lines painted on the pine Actually, I’m not sure Romans had lines to regulate straw to remind you. So stop it, or you’ll get a dreaded chariot parking in lots outside the forum. But we do, in letter on your windshield, fussing at you. the parking lot outside our club, and, praise be, most of us keep our chariots inside those lines. And now, as of a Some have asked why we took away two perfectly good couple of weeks ago, we have drawn even more lines to parking spots. It’s a safety issue. Cars in those spots, help you easily understand where you can leave your car, especially SUVs, interfere with sightlines. And when we and where you can’t. built the new clubhouse, those two places were never approved for parking. We just didn’t make that very Stand on the front steps of the clubhouse and face the clear. parking lot. You will see two rows of parking close in, then two more rows farther out. Look at the third row. The pool parking lot, such as it is, remains a problem. In the meantime, They weren’t supposed to, but it was not clear that they use your common sense. Try not to park illegally and weren’t supposed to. Now, it is, because we have put please, don’t block the golf cart path that leads to the down diagonal, white stripes that signal loud and clear, tunnel running under Lancaster to the 10th tee. “No Parking Here.” And since we put in the stripes, I have not seen one car in violation. Superintendent’s Message The greens were aerated August 21-23rd. Fertilizer, topdressing, grooming and rolling are planned throughout the next few weeks. The greens should get better by the day as they heal. The earlier aeration dates should extend the better putting conditions in the coming weeks as we start lowering the height. There are some isolated problems, as usual, due to trees and low airflow. These issues are prioritized and corrected as resources become available. This is our favorite time of year. The weather is perfect for both the warm season and cool season grass on the course.
This enables us to provide the best conditions of the year as everything comes together. There has been a lot of talk about bermudagrass greens. This has been a success at some area courses. We are still studying if this might be an option here, since our course surroundings are a lot different than the courses that have converted. We will be on this all month. Thank you, Craig S. Thompson, CGCS
Nifty Niners Golf Association The Nifty Niner event of the year has to be the Tri-9 Inerclub we hosted on August 16. The Clubhouse and Pro Shop staff went all out for us. Christina Cornell and Karen Lazarus, event chairs, worked with Don Hunter and NN volunteers for a Hawaiian-themed event that included: • a lavish continental breakfast spread, complete with Don’s special smoothies and Chef Jimmy’s fritters. • Gifts for guests from the Pro Shop as well as from the Niners, and a big apparel sale • a luau style feast in the Rosemary Room Tiki Bar, featuring music, pina coladas, wine, flowers, music, torches, and staff in Hawaiian garb There were some winning results among our own players- Kate Eifrig, closest to the pin, Flight A; and winning teams in Flight A: Kate Eifrig, Mary Guckes, and Susan Weidener. Winners in Flight B: Carolyn Hightower and Gale Claris. Niners, sign up immediately for the next fun Interclub, at Treyburn on September 12. Ladies come on out to play this fall. Suzan Cheek NN President
Senior Men’s Golf Association The President’s Match Play Tournament is in the final round with a winner in Flight Two in the person of John Latimer over the runner-up Haren Thakor. It is nice to see John has not lost his competitive touch. In Flight One, the two remaining contenders for the top spot are Gus Conley and Jim Williams. The winners of each flight will meet to determine the Grand Champion of the Tournament. The SMGA Championship will be held on Thusday and Friday September 20th and 21st. The two-day event will feature three flights and will be played for both gross and net Champion for 2012.
It is a great chance to get your name on the plaques in the trophy case. On Friday, September 28th, the SMGA Invites the Ladies, which gives the men an opportunity to match the very successful event hosted by the Ladies earlier this year. It is always one of the most enjoyable events of the year. Two Interclub matches are scheduled for September at Hope Valley on the 19th and Treyburn on the 26th. The sign-up sheets are in the Pro Shop. John McGee President
Women’s Golf Association
Greetings to all and Welcome to Fall,
What a difference a year makes. Last year this time our greens and fairways were in pretty rough shape but thanks to a plentiful rainfall I don’t think they’ve ever looked better. So a tip of the visor to Mother Nature and Craig and his able crew. It’s hard to believe we only have two months left of our regular playing season, and a sure sign of fall for the WGA means later starting times. Effective September 5th, we return to our 9AM starting time. Also, due to conflict with a Carolina home game we have moved our WGA Championship from September 22nd to Sunday, October 21st. We are sharing this time with the Club Championship Although it will be our very own WGA event, any player who wishes to participate in the Club Championship can still do so simultaneously. This year, as they will in the Club Championship, we’ll be using the Stableford format for scoring. As most of you know scoring for the Stableford format is one point for net bogie, two points for net par, three points for net birdie, and four points for net eagle.
For someone like me who has a tendency towards spectacular blow-ups I love this! Once I exceed net bogie on a given hole, I can pick up and move on and not worry about posting a 10! Contact Kelly Ross and Barbi Dalton for information on signups. Thank you to our August Play Day Chairs Suzan Cheek, Lucy Smith, and Shere Stone. As of this writing they report the following winners: Jane Lamm, Mary Tolton, Betsy Terrell, Sooja Park, Carolyn Hightower, Suzan Cheek, and Alexis Garvin. Finally if you’ve never played in a Divorce Open you’ve got an opportunity on Thursday, September 6th, 4pm shotgun start. As far as I know no actual divorces have occurred as a result of this event and they are a lot of fun with a great dinner following play. Call the Pro Shop to sign up. That’s all from the WGA. Enjoy some golf during our beautiful North Carolina fall weather. Laura Ellgen President
