When given the task of making a World Cup themed yearbook, we knew that it had to be special. This yearbook was produced by the Chapel community, for the Chapel community. The sense of unity, family and fellowship brought by the World Cup are values that we cherish here at Chapel. Values which we, in the Publications group, strove to showcase with the 2018 yearbook.

We sought to properly represent Chapel’s sports teams. Teams that we believe to be quintessential to Chapel and our school spirit. After going through tons of ideas, scrapping some and considering others, we finally knew what we had to do. The World Cup albums are something all students, especially our athletes, hold dear, therefore there’d be no better way to do our teams justice than giving our athletes their very own sticker album. The sticker album features Chapel’s own stars. We knew that this was an extremely ambitious project, and was going to take a lot of effort, dedication and focus. In the end, we are immensely satisfied with the final product. We truly believe that we accomplished our goal and our efforts have paid off.

According to FIFA, the 2010 World Cup was “the world’s most widely viewed sporting event”. During this tournament, 2 billion people, or about 29% of the world, sat down to watch more than 30 minutes of the Cup. Also, almost 3.2 billion people worldwide, roughly 46% of the world’s population, watched more than one minute of the event. Incredible!

One of

funniest facts associated with the World Cup involves the penalty shootout of the great Italian footballer Giuseppe Meazza. In 1938, he got the chance to shoot a penalty kick against Brazil.

While Meazza was about to kick, his shorts fell down. Despite this wardrobe malfunction, he picked up his shorts, and made the goal past the goalkeeper who was still laughing. This pushed Italy to the finals.

After a long, four-decade dry spell, that started in the 1950s, Team USA qualified for the 1990 World Cup Finals. They have qualified for every tournament since, making it to the quarterfinals in the 2002 tournament which was hosted jointly by Japan and South Korea.

The Italian Vice President of FIFA, Ottorino Barassi, hid the World Cup Trophy under his bed during World War II. Concerned it would be stolen by Nazis during wartime, the Italian sports official smuggled the trophy from a bank in Rome and safely stored it under his bed for most of the 1940s.

While the U.S.A. has never brought home the men’s FIFA cup, team U.S.A. won the first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1991, a feat repeated to great fanfare in 1999 with Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain leading the team.

The first-ever World Cup Finals event, held in 1930 and hosted by Uruguay, resulted in Team USA’s best showing. Coached by Jack Coll and led by goalkeeper Jimmy Douglas and Captain Tom Florie, the team stunned the word with 3-0 victories over both Belgium and Paraguay at Parque Central Stadium in Montevideo. This propelled the team to the semi-finals but they lost to soccer powerhouse Argentina.

Ma: It is thanks to you that today I am able to look back at all of the moments I have lived and only care about the good ones since the bad ones have become lessons learned. You taught me that the most important things in life are not grades, test scores, etc. but knowledge, family, and friendship. Pa: Even though I may not say it a lot I really admire you. You are my inspiration in life and I wish someday I can be half the man you are. Ever since I can remember you have pushed me to do my best in everything I do because you knew I was capable of it. You made me notice that I shouldn’t leave things to the next day since there are moments in life that if you wait too long might slip away. Mate: My teacher for so many things: soccer, skateboarding, surfing. Whatever I have done I am sure you had an influence on how well I did it. You forced me to get out of bed and not waste time on stupid things and I am really grateful for that. Gus: It is impossible to put to words how much you have changed me. You bring happiness to my life everyday and it is thanks to you that I learned that that no matter what problem I go through there is always light in the end of the tunnel. Nico: Even though we may annoy each other everyday I know that I can count on you for anything. Ever since we were little you have not only been a brother but a friend that has always stood by my side. Lu: Pu, Chu, Lufi, etc. these names don’t represent a tenth of the history of our friendship. You are truly the best parents I could have ever asked for. You have worked hard to provide me with the best life I could possibly have, including educational opportunities and travel experiences I will never forget. Love you both to the moon and back. Erik: Being annoying is what you do best, but I know that we will always be there for eachother. You are the brother life gave me, but you are also the friend I know I will have for a lifetime. Love you to the moon and back. Oma: You are strongest person I know, and that is what inspires me everyday. I love our sleepover movie nights and our little adventures. Thank you for everything you do for me and Erik on a daily basis and I hope that we can go on more international adventures together in the future. Opa: I have no idea if you can somehow know what I am writing here to you, but know that I miss you. How I wish you could be here with me at such an important part of my life, but know I can only hope that are proud of me and the person I have become. Our time in Art class is the best, occasionally watching Freaks & Geeks and singing along to Disney Songs. Eric: I loved reconnecting after our Pueri days and now I hope we don’t make the same mistake and stay in touch. Iqra: Easily the funniest girl in our grade, you always know when to make people laugh and your humor brightens up our day everyday day. Mr. Murphy: Even if you have been my official teacher for only a year, it seems like much longer than that. Parents: I owe everything that I am to you. Words cannot express how grateful I am for the never-ending support and opportunities that you have given me. Podemos ter nossas briguinhas, e nossos desentendimentos, mas eu sei que não existe ninguém nesse mundo mais invested in me than you. Amo muito vocês! Nick: You are the funniest person that I know, and capable of so much. I can’t believe that soon we won’t be living together any longer, but don’t worry, I’LL be the one making you ramen when I come visit. Iza: It’s impossible to give justice to the almost 15 years that we have spent together, much less for the ones that I am sure will come. You are like a sister to me, and I know that this will remain for a long time. Cou: Opposites attract, we are proof of that. Goodbye Chapel, goodbye high school, goodbye dear new old friends and dearest teachers!

Another milestone! There were some tough years in many ways, but also great high school years. Now everybody knows how strong you and your colleagues are. There were so many good and bad times, and so many tough tasks to accomplish. You all have had it done!

Someday you’ll look back at these pages and think about the people and events that shaped your high school experience. But now it’s time for something new, and as your biggest fans, we can’t wait to see what happens next! We, your parents and brothers have watched in such a happiness and amazement as you’ve grown into the person you are today, and we are watching with a kind of a great anticipation to see what you become. We are sure that you are growing up to be such a wonderful person. We are so proud of you! Cause you are a so talented guy, a hard worker, and most importantly, a thoughtful and kind person. Arthur.... Nome que possivelmente surgiu da língua celta, sendo a união dos elementos art, “urso” e ur, que significa “grande”. No caso do Arthur o grande e o forte realmente nos saltam aos olhos. Na verdade, reúne características e qualidades bem menos visíveis e bem mais complexas, como uma bela sinfonia de Mahler... Trata-se de um menino extremamente sensível. Não só para aqueles ao redor, mas também para aqueles que estão longe. Menino de gostos ecléticos que voam desde música clássica até os raps mais pesados.... Pessoa de interesses díspares, como uma bela exposição artística ou caminhadas em locais ermos acampando e dormindo na solidão. Amante da arte e dos museus que lhes dão abrigo, assim como dos lugares mais simples onde se pode devorar suculentos hamburgers. Avesso a modismos e frescuras, curte por outro lado as tendências que emergem de movimentos diferentes.... Acredito que Arthur será uma daquelas pessoas que irá tornar-se um “homem completo”. Completo no sentido de ter dentro de si a possibilidade de abraçar os dois lados da vida de forma igualmente apaixonante: a sombra e a luz, o belo e o bizarro, o rebuscado e o simples, o hermético e o extravagante, o quieto e o barulhento, o obvio e o oculto. From the first day on he had a great smile on his face! Being pushed by his older brother Bruno since the early years, Nicolas (Niki or Guaraná) was riding a bicycle without training wheels before he was 2. Starting early on a great athletic career…from being the Nebraska Champion in tennis to scoring most points in Basketball…made him a better leader within the team. Nicolas is easy going and a great companion. He has always shown great responsibility and respect to the people around him. From fighting each other to falling off horses it has been an honor to be by your side all these years. Our differences are what united us and allowed the development of our partnership. Estamos muito orgulhosos de sua trajetória, não só nos estudos, nos esportes, nas ações sociais, no NHS e também com a formação multicultural e humanista que recebeu e incorporou. Desde pequenina você queria ser veterinária, o que combinava com seu amor pelos animais. No 7th decidiu ser médica e percebemos seu amor ainda maior pelas pessoas, por cuidar delas. Com determinação manteve sua escolha, difícil e desafiadora, mas que, com seu caráter inabalável e persistência, conseguirá realizar. Sabemos que filhos crescem e tem necessidade de viver novas histórias e sonhos. Ajudar a levantar voo é um dos atos mais lindos da maternidade e paternidade, ver voar será sempre uma alegria, mas com um misto de vazio, apesar da sensação de missão cumprida. Ver voar é aplaudir a cada conquista, mas ainda querendo sentir as suas mãozinhas nas nossas. If life had a pause button, we would have pressed it a long time ago so we could keep you as our little Jubby forever…. but glad we didn´t as we watched you mature and turn into such an amazing, caring, beautiful and talented woman.
