A Touch of Gold
A Touch of Gold
After the year we have all experienced, the theme “A Touch of Gold” was chosen to reflect a ray of hope. The color gold represents illumination, love, compassion, and wisdom, all of which reflect the Chapel community now more than ever. This year the yearbook will capture all of the essential moments throughout the 2020-2021 school year, including the good, the bad, and everything in between. This has been a year of change, of improvement, and of adaptations. After going through such a difficult time, the yearbook was something that could not be left out, as it provides a sense of normalcy among so much uncertainty. Hopefully this yearbook will bring the students together after they have spent so much time apart. Hopefully, it will add “a touch of gold” to such a challenging year.

2020-2021 Timeline
Students started another school year completely online on August 10th. Students, staff members, and parents adapted to a new and necessary way of learning.
September July
August
Chapel’s administration undertook to prepare the school for receiving students back on campus. In line with health protocols, polycarbonate shields were installed on all desks, arrows were put on the floors to coordinate pedestrian traffic, hand-sanitizer dispensers were installed around the school, and a whole new system of ‘people transit’ was put in place.
The school building was ready to receive the students back to classes on campus.
Schools were allowed to open for extracurricular activities under certain conditions. On October 13th, students started after school activities, while Seniors returned to campus for the first time in a while for their mock exams. As per governmental decree, 20 percent of our students were allowed to be on campus.
October November
Some classes continued to remain on campus, except in cases where someone in the class tested positive. Then the entire class returned to remote learning for a 14day quarantine period.
Classes adjourned on December 15th for the summer break.
December
January
After a month of vacation, classes resumed on January 20th. The second semester of the school year started with 35 percent of students on campus, though online classes remained an option for those students who wished to work from home. The school organized a schedule in which Pre I students would come everyday, while all other grade levels would rotate and come two or three times per week.
Each grade level was able to come to campus two or three days per week following the 35 percent capacity allowance. Students had a three-day break for Carnival.

On April 12th classes on campus were allowed again to receive 35 percent of students on campus.
End of the 20202021 school year on June 11th.
April
May
On May 3rd, optional on-campus after school extracurricular activities resumed. Students participated in different activities (up to 35 percent of the student body as mandated by the authorities).

“During this pandemic year I was able to verify more clearly that, despite the difficulties that each of us has faced, the sacred in each person, and in each child, has remained intact. Our lessons on Zoom, and on campus, have been rich, happy, and very productive. Together we have been able to maintain faith and confidence in the future, and in ourselves.” - Ms. Ana Lucia Dias

“Staying away from people I love, like my mother and my stepfather with whom I used to spend long and lazy Sunday afternoons on the veranda, has been a painful challenge. The constant fear of being contaminated or contaminating my loved ones is still a shadow hanging over me all the time. I deal with this kind of anguish by searching for connections. During this time, I started to pay more attention to my body, my rhythms, and the cycles of nature. Despite the physical distance, this has allowed me to connect with different people, people outside of my ‘bubble’. I was amused last week to realize that my karate sensei is from Goiania and my yoga instructor is in Florianópolis. I hope this ‘newly-opened door’ does not close after this pandemic ends.” - Ms. Erika Ferreira

“This has been the most challenging year yet, with so many uncertainties, changes, and losses. All this hardship has allowed us to take a moment and reconsider what is truly important to each one of us. For me it has been faith, family, friends, community, and health. The “Touch of Gold” that brightened up my days was definitely my students’ smiles and conversations in our daily morning meetings. One specific morning during our first semester, I heard news that my father, who had been hospitalized due to covid, would have to go through a high-risk medical procedure. I was feeling sad and worried. However, as soon as I started the morning meeting, the smiles and positive energy my students brought suddenly made everything inside of me feel at peace. Somehow I felt everything would be okay. Whenever one of the students showed up looking a little gloomy, we would encourage and lift each other’s spirits! I am very grateful for my students and the encouraging community we were able to build together, especially this school year.” - Ms.

“My Touch of Gold were the students’ smiles and cheery dispositions, their eagerness to participate. Students always having random stories to share brought laughter and happiness to our lessons.
I learned that it’s okay to ‘break the mold’. To embrace innovative learning and not let routines dictate our practice. The importance of it is being together as a school, as a home, and as a community. We need each other to make it happen.” - Ms. Maria Hernandez

“Oh, wow, so much happened this past year! First, living through a pandemic was startling, alarming, intimidating, and changed our routines, habits, and lives entirely. The settled uncertainty and not being able to plan ahead and for the future was a challenge. Learning about different learning models and dedicating time to design and develop our remote and hybrid learning programs was fundamental. After all, who had expected that the pandemic would have lasted for this long? Gratitude for all in our community, the comfort of our homes, the technology available, for equipped classrooms, and the personal protective equipment we all own, to name a few. Appreciation for our health and the time spent with our loved ones. Mental, emotional, physical, and social resilience have never been as visible as during the pandemic. We were all daily challenged and yet had faith, strength, hope, and optimism that better days were to come. Finally, the COVID-19 vaccine has arrived and is undoubtedly a touch of gold. Thankfully, now, more than ever, we can look ahead to the future with our hearts filled with hope for our lives and the life of others, with the expectation that soon we will be able to hold hands again!” - Ms. Juliana Menezes

“There are times in life when we have to do things without having a say in them, and then there are times in life when we can choose what to do. We do these things with passion, love, and a lot of dedication! We have no control over this pandemic, but we can choose to take care of ourselves and be as safe as possible. I did have a choice to make our Art classes happen remotely or in person, and I am happy to have made the best of them! We prepared individual ‘Art kits’ for the students with a lot of love! Students have been able to produce their art in a variety of media with great success! Way to go, student artists! Art may not save lives, but it sure feeds the soul! “ - Ms. Sylvia Almeida

- Ms. Adriana Alves

“Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with an adhesive mix of powdered gold. It reveals an object’s history, the processes it has gone through. Symbolically, it represents resilience and the strength in accepting and transforming one’s flaws. During this last year, many things were broken; we found ourselves separated from our loved ones. Isolated, many of our internal tensions and flaws rose to the surface. Now we have an opportunity to accept ourselves, look inwards, and strive to mend those broken pieces so tomorrow we can put our stronger and more resilient selves in service of those in need.” - Mr. Caio Gragnani
“It goes without saying that this has been a challenging year. A school is a close-knit community, and it has been difficult to maintain that closeness over the months of working from home. My touch of gold has been the opportunity to come back on campus, to speak with people face to face, to meet new students that I had only seen on a computer screen, and to start bringing that tightly-knit aspect back to the Chapel family. There’s nothing better than seeing the students having fun with each other in between classes and for me to share a lunch table with my coworkers. We may not yet be back to normal, but I can see the golden rays on the horizon.” - Mr. Benjamin Vaughan
“To me, this year’s touch of gold was the gift of TIME. During this time, my family and I enjoyed more sharing, more playing, more puzzles, and more walks. We took time to learn new skilIs, and give new dimensions to patience and gratitude.“ - Ms. Cristiana Cavalcanti

Preschool I
This was definitely an intense year, a different year in many different ways. It has been a year full of challenges and difficulties, but a year also filled with love, care, support, and trust.
This year showed us how powerful and strong we can be when we work together and how everything is possible when we all try our best. We were physically distant for most of our year together, but never ever emotionally distant. We created bonds, we helped each other and, through this intense process, we experienced learning with lots of love, joy and resilience. Thank you! Love, Ms. Manu and Ms. Ste

Thank you for making our year brighter and happier, and showing us that we can face anything if we are together. Come visit, as you will always belong here!

Dearest Pre II, This was a very different year in so many ways. We had Zoom classes, we had to wear masks, we had to keep our distance from one another, and we could not have our friends all together at school. It was not the way we wanted it to be and it was hard. But you should know that you did a great job! You were patient and persistent and learned so much! We are proud to see how much you have grown! And we were very happy to have you in our Pre II! You will always have a special place within our hearts! Love from your teachers, Ms. Natasha and Ms. Luísa

Dear Pre II, Thank you for all the great moments we spent together, on campus and ‘on the screen’. You are all great children, very creative and fun! You made our days brighter and happier, helping each other to navigate this very challenging moment we are going through. It has been an enormous pleasure to help you learn letters, sounds, numbers, and so many other things. But most of all it was a blessing learning from you how to keep our lives joyful through every song, game, and conversation we shared! I miss you all already!!

It was challenging, but very special. It was tiring, but we had lots of fun. We made friends, we learned, we connected, we grew, and we did our best! It was not easy, but we made it! We shared homes, families, and lots of love. It was really meaningful! It was a pleasure to share this challenging experience with such special students and families!

Oh, what an amazing year this has been! It was more like an adventure, if you ask me. We got to be pirates and sail the ‘Zoom seas’ together. Then we were pilots and each of us, in our own bubble spaceships, got to discover space and accomplish missions together. More importantly, we faced challenges and together we beat aliens, monsters, and viruses. We conquered unknown lands together and we won! You all did! No one and nothing can stop us now! Ms. Nathy and I loved having you in our classroom! Your smiles brightened our day, every day!

Dear 2nd Graders, This was for sure the craziest school year we’ve ever had, but it was definitely one of the most amazing! Because of the pandemic, we started the school year remotely and we couldn’t welcome you to 2nd Grade with a warm, tight hug. However, that didn’t seem to be a problem because you have always been so kind and understanding! One of the happiest days of the year was when we finally had the chance to meet in person. Thank you for being such great students and human beings. Throughout an entire year you made our days brighter and our hearts warmer. We hope we were able to do the same for you. Now you’re off to 3rd grade and we are sure you’re going to rock it! Good luck! Love, Ms. Stella and Mr. Caleb

Hello Fifth Graders, Thanks for being a great group during a challenging year! You all grew, made progress, learned new things, and shared memories together as a community. Sixth Grade
From the moment I entered Chapel School, I felt a heart-warming and welcoming feeling from all its community members. In 6th Grade the students have shown to be a tight-knit group of genuinely happy and hardworking kids that are well-spoken, very technologically-proficient and noticeably curious to learn. During these challenging times they have also surprised me with their grit by continuing to hand in assignments and finish work (sometimes until late at night). This proves the excellent mentality they have shown in this second semester. It is clear they are a group poised to take on all the challenges the High School will throw at them. I am more than convinced these bright young kids will astonish everyone with their knowledge and technological capabilities. Sad to see them go so soon but glad to see them move on and prove their worth. Good luck and don’t be a stranger! Come and visit us whenever you can. I will miss you dearly! Kind regards, Mr. Stoops
This year my ‘touch of gold’ was definitely those few days from late January until mid-March when we got to go to school and interact with each other. The biggest lesson I learned this year was that my 6th Grade students are quite skilled at editing screenshots of me while I am teaching. Please see here some highlights of our year. Mr. Weaver

Ye and the Boys: It’s almost insulting to call you my friends because we’re practically family at this point. I’ve known all of you for 14 years, and each year that passed I became more convinced that I was lucky to be friends with you all. I can be myself with you like I can’t be with almost any other group of people, even when we make fun of each other or disagree. We’ve all been through so much over the years and have so many stories to tell, and I just wanted to say thank you for everything. Here’s to more stories ahead of us. MUN: I was reluctant to join MUN at first, but I eventually came through. That was one of my best decisions. I could talk about so much, from the beautiful places we went to, to all the fun I had defending some position I didn’t even agree with. But the biggest takeaway from MUN was definitely the people. All the new friendships I made, all the conversations I had, and all of the memories I made are things I will always hold dear. At first I was sad my time in MUN got cut short by quarantine, but looking back at all of the wonderful things we went through, I can say I have nothing to be sad about. Class of 2021: It wasn’t until recently that it hit me that I’d have to say goodbye to all of you. At first, all I could think about was how much I was going to miss Chapel, especially you. That made me realize how big a part of my life you have been. I didn’t want to have to say goodbye to this group of people with whom I have shared such good memories, especially because our senior year was cut short. But as time went on, I realized that every part of our lives, including this one, naturally ends. And that makes it all the more beautiful. I wish things could have ended differently than they had, but that’s not important. It doesn’t overshadow how good all my years with you guys were, and it shouldn’t. Because I feel like there’s no better group of people to have spent the start of my life with. So thank all of you, and see you soon.
The most important thing in my life is my family, as they have all been with me since I was born. I know you are going to support me when I am in need and I am going to support you when you are in need. I am extremely grateful for my parents choosing to give me an exceptional education, which I am certain was a good investment. I love you, Ale and José. I am extremely thankful for the education you gave me at home, which set my moral values and manners and made me be the person I am today. Even though we argue all the time I love you and I know you love me. I love you, Dinda, and I adore you, Nonna. Dining out and having conversations with you both is the best. I cherish you, Jidu, and love discussing politics and history with you. I admire you the most, Moema and Firmino. Even though I never got to meet you properly I know you were great people and you will always be in my heart. Even though school was stressful at times,I was able to balance my social and academic life. I have to congratulate my friends for going through all of this with me and making the moments more joyful. My plan after graduation is to study business administration.

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” - Mark Twain A message to the class of 2021 by Enzo Menghini
In life’s teather, ignore the portentous squall, Instead, hear the bells tinkle, tinkle in thy heart; Be the leader, not the placid piddling cattle, Have the wit to persist and the courage to start.
If a boulder shutters thy dazzling glasshouse Carry on! tis nothing but a cheese to a mouse, This is the gift of life, things always get pleasant, Therefore, live not in the past, but in the present.
Remember to always be incredibly fair; Do not judge anyone by the clothes they wear, Paint gold to the rotting dark flowers, And spread the beauty of love hour after hour.
For time awakens with the glittering sun today; O’er the foggy mountains time fleets away, The pendulum swivels, thou it is never late, For the first peak has been reached, but the clouds await!
Best Chapel memory: My best Chapel memory occurred in an unexpected location: a bus while we were returning from Foz do Iguaçu. The day seemed forgettable; the constant movement from one vehicle to another made students and teachers look like zombies, with bags under the eyes and the pace of a turtle. Furthermore, outside of the bus, beams of lightning flashed, and the concrete jungle of São Paulo brought never-ending traffic. However, there was music and good-hearted people all around, and when there is that you do not need anything else. Soon enough, the power of a small JBL speaker located close to the bus’s chemical bathroom made Freddy Mercury’s music run through everyone’s veins. Students and teachers rocked out while singing the best that the 1980s could offer. At that moment, I knew that a memory was being meticulously crafted, a memory that not only I could taste, but one that everyone had the opportunity to take part in. Perhaps that’s why people say, “Life would be a mistake without music.” For this reason, I would like to thank you for participating in this memorable event. This moment will certainly leave its “footprints on the sands of time.” Plans after Chapel: I believe everyone will use this space to express their desires for greatness. I have a different plan. I will let life’s uncertainty be an orchestra to my ears, let a ‘love of fate’ be my philosophy. I hope that I don’t take life too seriously, as school makes it seem so important. A “man reaches maturity when he has regained the seriousness that he had as a child at play,” and not when he cries for getting a low grade. That about it sums it up. I will make a difference in other people’s lives. The best thing of this school year: It is hard to pinpoint a moment that has stood out for me in this school year. Perhaps it might be that I have been taking my mental-health more seriously. Special thanks to: My mother: I’ll pay tribute to your loveliness with this short rhyme:
When the gray clouds cried in pain and anorexic birds sang in vain, I didn’t tremble, for I was not alone, there was always another. An angel that brightens my day like a sun ray, the one I’m glad to call my mother.
Ye and the Boys and Tea Boys: I did not realize you were fading from sight. However, I thought to myself, friendship never disappears for it is always near. Friendship never falls apart, for it’s like diamond, always glittering in one’s heart. For this reason, I collect and shall never forget; your smiles, that made me have company in the deserted isles. And I will remember you till the end for being the greatest of friends. *Ps. Tea Boys, I promise to be the DM in the next D&D campaign.

Best Chapel memory: Studying for the surprise mock week last semester (Sem 1 12th). Plans after Chapel: Still figuring it out
The best thing of this school year: Vacations
After all these years of school, finally graduating seems insane. But thank God it’s finally happening. Don’t get me wrong, these years of school were very fun and all but I also just want to move on. I will be keeping this simple and straight to the point as words can’t express all the memories made in school and I think it’s more meaningful this way. Chapel brought a lot of great memories and most importantly a group of friends that always stood by my side during the roughest of times. Being surrounded by people who are always willing to help and just have fun with in general is great. I would like to personally thank Omar, Zion, Rico, Almeida, Enzo, Pedro, Gui V, Franco, Barbour, Bobby, Tommy, Tuti and Michel for just being great friends in general throughout all my years at Chapel. I’m really happy to be part of such a fun and caring group. Highlighting specific memories won’t do these guys justice considering how amazing everyone is. Therefore, I just wanted to sincerely thank each and every one of them for the great years that we had. I also wanted to use this text to thank some of my favorite teachers. Mr. Plain, Mr. Campbell and Mr. Muller. Thanks for being amazing and nice people throughout my years at school. You guys represent the best of what a teacher can be and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to be taught by you. A lot of great things happened during 12th grade. Even though the first semester was entirely done at home, we were still able to make some hilarious memories through Zoom that I will remember forever. My plans after Chapel include going to university and then figuring out what happens next. But what I’m sure of is that I will be maintaining contact with the guys for the foreseeable future as this group is too good to just be forgotten. Finally, I just wanted to thank my parents for always being by my side every moment throughout my school years. I can’t imagine what I would have done without them so I just wanted to sincerely thank them for everything they’ve done for me. Again, words literally can’t describe how thankful I am. Thank you :)

So, I guess I’m finally able to move on from here. Mr. Vaughan, Mr. Manning, Ms. Blasingame: You were definitely my favourite teachers. The respect, understanding, and hard work you put into our classes and clubs really made the school a lot more fun for me. VANDER: We might not have been together as much as we would have liked, but I must say, the man I am today is based on the man you taught me to be. I might act like I don’t listen to your wisdom, but it all went straight to the heart, old man. We’ve got a lot more Boat Shows to go to, though, so make sure you keep alive and well. Seriao, obrigado por tudo LAURA: The number of essays you proofread makes me really owe it to you, right? How about we make a deal: I’ll finally watch Dark. Not like you do by reading a book, brushing your teeth, and walking around the home while watching. In all seriousness, let the record show: I appreciate you beyond measure. RAFA: We might not always see eye-to-eye but to say I don’t value you would be a huge lie. You inspired my love of art and taught me a lot about life. And who else would I have to hold my camera when making recordings? And look - I’ll try to wash my dishes from now on, ok? YE BOYS+MESA: God, I love this group. I don’t think I’ll ever find a ragtag group of weirdos like this again. The fun we had and the adventures we shared were a highlight of my life. I’ll say it here on paper and never again. I will also deny writing this, but I love you guys. MENGHINUS: Cara, I’m going to be real here. I know of no one else that I like talking to as much as you. I hope you’ll remember our works of art such as RoboBob, our adventures such as Itu, and our hilarious moments in Xbox parties, when you get your Nobel Prize. ALMEIDA: Through all our moments, my friend, I want you to remember one thing when looking back: Mockery is the greatest form of flattery. I want you to know, no matter what I say, that I’ll have your back to the grave and beyond, brother. MAMUS: I need to be honest - being friends has been one of the greatest surprises in my life. And yet somehow I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We’ve been through thick and thin, Mamus, and let’s make sure we’ll get into a lot more trouble together in the future. PICKLE RICK: My man. I want you to know that although we might not live next door in the future, the Jewish Mafia will always be open for business. And remember to give me a premium subscription to your articles, won’t you? ZION: You are a true homie, Z-Man. I learned one of my most valuable lessons with you: To always rock on at maximum volume. Listening to INTERPOL will always make me remember our times. Still, we got a lot more songs to shout along to before you can get rid of me. GUIBRUH: I have never met someone with a sense of humor as amazing as yours. You are a good friend, so make sure you don’t ghost us when school’s over. PEDROCA: I always love hanging out and talking with you even if we’re only sharing an Uber. Thanks for everything, Pedroca. LUKE: We might disagree on domestic policy, but I think we can both agree that I will always have your back. We go way back and I know we’ll go way forward. BOBBERS: Your enthusiasm for life is contagious, my friend. I loved our time together. ALL: I will always have a hard time expressing my gratitude to you guys. I really learned how much you mean to me given how many hours you spent in the last year helping me with things.

Pedro: Thank you for all the great memories and MUN conferences, from THIMUN to Rock in Rio. We’ve had a lot of funa and been on many great adventures. Omar: You and I have been through a lot. You’ve been one of my main buddies since I arrived at Chapel. We’ve completed a lot of challenges in video games together, and I know we’ll complete many more. Zion: We’ve had many great memories, and been through tough times, but I’m really glad I can call you a friend. From long nights playing video games to fun times at restaurants and on trips, I know I can count on you to have fun. Gui V: Your insight and humour have always been things I value. From theorizing on movies and video games to going on crazy adventures, we’ve been through a lot of fun. I hope we go through a lot more adventures together. Almeida: There are many moments I can think of when writing about you, and I’d like to thank you for all of them. We’ve had so much fun together, and I know we will have a lot more. Tolda: I still remember when we walked into class on the same day and everyone thought that we were siblings. I want to thank you for the great times we had together, and the wonderful MUN conferences we’ve been a part of. I wish you success going forward in life, and I hope that we remain friends. Enzo, Gui T, Barbour: I’m glad I can call you my friends. We’ve been through thick and thin, and on many fun adventures. Some were scary, and some very entertaining. Moving forward, I wish you to see you all in the future and re-create and relive these moments together. We can make more memories together. Bobby, Tommy, Franco: We’ve had some great times together, and a lot of fun. I know that we will have a lot more, and I wish the three of you much success in university and in life. Mr. Campbell, Mr. Vaughan, Mr. Marcos: All three of you have been great mentors and teachers, and I know that your future students are going to be as lucky as I am. I wish you all the best, and I would like to thank you all for teaching me. Ms. Knox: My Birthday Buddy! Although we spent very little time in class, and I never had the pleasure of having you as a full time teacher, I’m very happy that you went to an MUN conference with us. I wish you all the best moving forward, and I know that future students will be lucky to have you as a teacher! Ms. Veronesi: It’s been a very long time since I’ve had you as a teacher, but those science classes have been the ones where I learned the most. It was always fun having you as a teacher, and you’ve always answered the most ridiculous and far-fetched questions I had. It’s a shame I didn’t choose bio as my science, but if I could go back, I most certainly would. Thank you for the great classes. I wish you all the best!

Best Chapel memory: Playing around with my friends Plans after Chapel: College and eventually entrepreneurship The best thing of this school year: Graduation
Chapel School. Wow, I can’t believe it’s coming to an end. Someone who was once a childish troublemaker is still a childish troublemaker, but one with a diploma. I am out of words. What should I even say? Should I start thanking people? Family? Friends? Alright, let’s do it. Here goes: my most sincere thanks to everyone who has played a role in the development of Omar Daher. To begin, the three people who obviously deserve my most sincere appreciation and applause are my parents and brother. These three heroes managed to put up with me for 17 years and counting. They have dealt with all of my extremely annoying moments with smiles on their faces. Well, maybe not all the time, but I don’t blame them as they’re only human. So from the bottom of my heart thank you for providing me with all that you did, and glory for the years to come. The Daher family still has much to accomplish! Coming in at a close second, the people who have been by my side for basically my entire life -- the boys. This group of people, although not always the wisest with rational decisionmaking, are the best friends I could have ever asked for. This group, made up of the most elite men this world has ever seen, deserve my most personal, heartfelt, and individual applause. Let’s begin: I’d like to start this list with Guilherme Vercelli. He and I have been through a lot: Missed assignments; visits to the dean’s office; legendary political campaigns that got us into the student council; even a dirt bike accident together. From the moment I met him, I knew this man was destined for greatness. Gui, all I have to say is thank you. Wow, I almost started tearing up a little with that last one. Three other people that have been by my side since I can remember are Lucas, Zion and Rico. The three of us go way back. We have done everything, from staying awake until six in the morning to build an electric skateboard, to jet skiing off Floripa. A huge and heartfelt thanks to all of you as well. Another person, with whom I have probably laughed the most, is Franco. Despite not being in the same friend group, both of us are on the same page, from jokes, to taste, to dedication. He has had my back no matter the circumstances and, man, I will miss all the gym sessions at the bottom of his building. I’ll miss you, Franco. Now the moral compass of the group. How could I not talk about Arthur Almeida. This man is the single-most dedicated and morally-aligned person I have ever met. He is the type of person I’d like to introduce to my kids. I owe a special thanks to you, Arthur, and here it is: Thank you for keeping me and the boys in line at the hardest of times. I also need to mention a couple of people who are not only some of the smartest individuals I have come across, but some of the funniest: Pedro and Tocantins. Both of them have cracked me up with jokes to the point where I can barely speak. They are people I look up to a lot, so thank you, guys, for being by my side. I swear I could talk about these people forever, but I am limited to 3,800 characters and am currently at 3,400. For this reason my most sincere thanks also goes to Bobby, Barbour, Enzo, Tommy, Michel, Boueiri, Inaki, and Leo. You guys are a few of the nicest people I have ever met. To conclude this page I’d like to thank once more all my friends and family, as well as the Chapel staff, particularly Mr. Marcos Müller, one of the most interesting people I know. So thank you for these wonderful years.

Rico: Thanks for always being by my side and being a great friend. You are always someone I can talk to and with whom I can share my most random thoughts and experiences. I’ve told you all about the crazy YouTube video cycles I have gotten myself into, weird songs I discovered and the depths of my procrastination; you are a truly amazing friend. Enzo: One of the funniest people I have ever met - I will never forget about the lunchtime shenanigans in 8th grade that gave me the greatest laughs ever. At the same time, I will never get tired of hearing you argue about politics. Maybe one day the Civ VI match will still happen. Omar: I am confident that your Rust skills will transfer well to whatever career you choose to pursue in life - this ‘time commitment’ shaped you up to become great in whatever you choose to do. I am sure it will be wild to think back on these years after we have graduated. Vercelli: My procrastination partner-in-crime, but you were always one step further. One of the funniest people I have ever met. Almeida: Just randomly walking around and forgetting your backpack - you are definitely one of the most memorable people I have ever met and shared great moments with. Good luck in college, man. Zion: I will miss your music recommendations a lot. You’re absolutely insane and one of the most hyped-up people I’ve ever met. I’m sure we’ll have a lot of good moments to come! Tocantins: You are legitimately the funniest person I’ve ever met; everybody knows that when Guibruh talks, everyone in the call listens. Super raiz with the best jokes ever. Love you, man. Wish you the best. Bobby: My friend since the very beginning. I am still surprised how you literally never come in Chapel dress code clothes and yet never get in trouble. Great times together. I am looking forward to many more. Girls: You have the most positive, infectious energy in the entire school! Literally every class becomes more fun and lighthearted because of the atmosphere you create. I wish you all the best in the future! Mr. Vaughan: Absolute best chaperone. I will definitely miss ‘nerding out’ about watches with you - I wish you the best in your collecting journey! Class of 2021: Thanks for the best high school experience I could have wished for! I wish each and every one of you the best, and I look forward to the good times ahead of us! To all my teachers, thanks for everything. I really appreciate the effort that you put into the lessons!

Our experience has been unique: all the sneaker drops attempts, outfit matches on casual days, watching sneakerhead videos during class… We have made some very unwise choices hahaha! Best Chapel memory: The Pep Rallies where the Trojan would come around and dance for the hundreds of people chanting and wearing face paint Plans after Chapel: University and life in the United States The best thing of this school year: Graduating Chapel has been a series of ups and downs just like anything in life and it made me who I am today. One thing I will always remember from Chapel is the Pep Rallies where the Trojan would come around and dance for the hundreds of people chanting and wearing face paint. After high school, I will be prepared to make a life for myself in the United States after graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology. I am thankful for all the extraordinary friends Chapel has allowed me to meet and with whom I will always keep a relationship with even while being miles away. At Illinois Tech, I will remember the table tennis tournaments that we used to make and the tense moments at the end of matches. This year I am sure the best thing that will happen to me will be graduating. It is a strong step towards the future which I am looking forward to and an accomplishment I will carry with me until the end of my life. Dear Mom and Dad, I would say I am thankful for the way you raised me but that is obvious. The openmindedness and charisma you taught me during my years as a kid during middle school has made me a respectful man. Your inspiration is what made me get to this moment in my life and it’s a moment I will cherish forever in this life journey. You are the reason I am who I am and I could not be happier with the life choices you guided me through. I love you.

Arthur Barbour de Freitas
Arthur, querido.
Enzo Salvatore Lattarullo Menghini

Tamo Junto! Com amor, papai, mamãe e Be.

Siga questionando e mudando.

Viajes em familia, mundiales, Nagas, tenis, risas, Punta, complicidades, Einstein(s), agujas, muuucha actitud, goles, Las Máquina, playlists, charlas, himnos gritados, paleta em la playa, color colooor??
Nunca pierdas tu esencia, tu espontaneidad, tu sentido común. Tu lealtad, tu honestidad.

Te amamos milhões de vezes to the moon and back.
Lelê, você é a melhor irmã do mundo. Eu te amo muito! Lucas
Lelê, you made it! Conte sempre comigo no matter what, eu estarei sempre ao seu lado. Lara

Maria Rosa Kaba Aboud
Dear Maria, I can’t believe you are graduating High School!!!! Just 18 years ago you were born and became a blessing to me and to our family from day one. Watching you grow has been one of the major highlights of my life. You bring joy, cheer, laughter, kindness and gentleness to all you meet. Your accomplishments until today have been truly outstanding. You have the virtues necessary for a truly happy life. The main virtues I see in you are: diligence, perseverance, effort, discernment, compassion, resilience, helpfulness, solidarity, empathy, friendliness and kindness (and how can I forget: a super sense of fashion!). I wish you a life of fulfilment and true human connections. Love you with all my heart always, your “Ma”
Dear Maria, Congratulations on your graduation. This is truly a wonderful achievement. Your hard work, dedication and perseverance has paid off. You are a very special girl, strong and smart and beautiful, and most importantly, thoughtful and kind and loving. There is so much ahead for you and I am so proud of you. Continue to work hard and you will continue to achieve whatever you want. Remember to follow your dreams and be your wonderful self! Love, Da.

Rapha meu amor,
A gente te ama demais, Mamãe e Papai

Estaremos orgulhosos acompanhando nosso amorzinho. We love you Ro!

Sofia Bueno Buazar
Tu mama.
I hope your dreams take you to the corner of your smiles, the highest of your hopes, windows to new opportunities and the most special place your heart has ever knowned! Thank you for being the best brother we could ever ask for! Cata and Sofi

Goodbye High School
Health Protocols
After many months of remote learning due to the pandemic, Chapel gradually started to reopen the campus for classes. Once we had developed a set of health and safety protocols to ensure everyone’s well-being, we started by bringing a number of students to campus so they could engage in sports and extracurricular activities. On-campus classes followed on rotating days. Some of the new measures we enacted included checking temperatures, using face masks, and physical distancing. Classrooms and other student spaces were sterilized and re-organized to maintain a healthy, optimal learning environment. Chapel constructed three new classrooms in the auditorium, while the Elementary and High School libraries were also re-purposed as classrooms. We also installed polycarbonate table shields on desks and lunch tables. We are proud that the Chapel community came together to maintain the safest environment possible for students, teachers and staff. Although campus life is indeed different, being back at school has certainly provided an incentive to continue teaching and learning in the most optimistic way possible.
High School Clubs
CIC - Chapel's Investment Club
Advisor: Mr. Vinicius Carmello
The main goal of Chapel’s Investment Club (CIC) is to analyze national and international economic scenarios through the study of microeconomics and macroeconomics. In addition, with the aid of stock exchange simulators we also carry out a general analysis of fixed income markets, stock markets, as well as personal and corporate finances. The Chapel Investment Club meets every Friday from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Students: Guilherme Vercelli, Tomas Miraglia, Franco Stella, Guilherme Tocantins, Qingtian (Bobby) Huang, Arthur Almeida, Cezario Caram Filho, João Arantes, Antonio Rangel, and Bruno Monte Alto.
Computer Programming
Advisor: Mr. Marcos Müller
The Programming Club is geared towards students who have finished at least one semester of the Introduction to Computer Science course and serves as a place where students can continue practicing the skills acquired during the course. In an environment resembling a real life software studio, students create software with a focus on identifying issues that can be improved or solved through the creation of software. This software can then be used in the school community. Students are currently working on multiple projects such as software for controlling reservations of resources by teachers, a system to keep track of students' results in Physical Education tests, and a system to help a non-governmental organization (NGO) keep track of the people they assist. The 2020-2021 members of the club are: Henrique Rocha, Matheus Becklas, Pedro de Marchi, and Rodrigo Garrido.
Newspaper Club
Advisor: Ms. Fernanda Caires
The Chapel Newspaper Club, responsible for the Trojan News, is Chapel School’s online student-run newspaper. During the 2020-2021 school year, the club published pieces about school life during the pandemic and other articles about the school community. Writing under the slogan “Trojan Integrity, a Modern Outlook”, the club is open to students from 7th to 12th grades. Students who participated this year are: Enzo Menghini, Henrique Rocha, Leticia Barbosa, Santiago Carvallo Herrera, Sofia Velasco Ulloa, and Victoria Oliveira.
Knowledge Bowl
Advisor: Mr. Bryan Sanders
Knowledge Bowl is an academic tournament consisting of teams from various international schools in Brazil, Chile, and Panama. Teams work collaboratively and apply their multidisciplinary knowledge to answer questions in various subjects ranging from mathematics and history to popular culture. Students are able to meet like-minded students from other schools at competitions. Due to the coronavirus, however, we have had to put a hold on our travel plans. The team is excited about future travel and competitions, as we have been practicing on Zoom every Friday afternoon. Any student is able to join our Knowledge Bowl Club and attend weekly practices. If competing and traveling excite you, consider joining us as we are actively recruiting members. This year’s Knowledge Bowl club consisted of Elren Yeongin Chae (Captain), Beatriz de Oliveira Abram, Pedro Loureiro, and Marco Montini.
MedClub
Advisor: Mr. Leonardo Silveira
The Med Club discusses current topics in medicine, including information about diseases and preventative measures. The club’s main goals are to develop students’ critical thinking and communication skills and create a friendly environment to share experiences while building appreciation for learning topics in the medical field. The meetings are led by Arthur Almeida (Grade 12) under the supervision of Mr. Silveira every Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Students have discussed Covid-19, the Heimlich maneuver, depression, vaccines and anti-vax movements, strokes, signs of stress in teenagers, as well as other thought-provoking issues. Students from different grades participated this year: Arthur Almeida, Maria Rosa Aboud (12th), Barbara Lara (7th), Luiza Hanftwurzel, and Joao Reszecki (9th).
Model United Nations
Advisor: Mr. Benjamin Vaughan
The 2020-2021 school year was one of challenges and new beginnings for the Chapel Model United Nations (MUN) group. We had a lot of new faces jump into a world of MUN, and this year all of our meetings and conferences were held virtually because of the pandemic. Despite this, our leadership team (President Pedro de Marchi, Vice President Guilherme Vercelli, and Secretary Luisa Tolda) guided the group to an extremely successful year. The 2020-2021 members are: Amanda Monte Alto, Arthur Almeida, Barbara Monte Alto, Beatriz Abram, Bruno Monte Alto, Gabriel Lins, Guilherme Tocantins, Guilherme Vercelli, Henrique Rocha, Lorenzo Perrotti, Luisa Tolda, Luisa Ventura, Mariana Menezes, Marina Silva, Martin Castellanos, Pablo Guimarães Silva, Pedro de Marchi, and Toni Tomas

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)
Advisor: Mr. Erico Padilha
The chapter of the National Junior Honor Society carried out yet another disputed selection process. It started in August 2020, with 22 candidate students who had an academic performance equal to or greater than 3.2 (GPA), the selection process held twelve online meetings through January 2021. At the end of the selection, which sought to assess the degree of commitment and engagement of students during the activities carried out in the semester, we highlighted responsibility, group work, leadership ability and maintaining a commitment routine with the new dynamics of remote teaching and learning. In addition to the new challenges imposed by the pandemic, students who competed for a place in the NJHS chapter also had to submit three letters of recommendation. Each was voluntarily written by a teacher who, outside of chapter meetings, was also able to assess students' conduct during regular classes. At the end of the selection process the names of the finalists were submitted for approval by the Faculty Council so they could, after a thorough review, approve the five finalists. With the inclusion of new members, the Chapel School NJHS chapter today has a student body of 19 students: Antonia B. Villain, Beatriz Abram, Catalina Miraglia, Diego Garcia Unzueta, Eduarda Gervazoni, Felipe Menezes, Fernando Ackel, Lucas De Salles, Marco Montini, Maria Clara Rodrigues, Maria Victoria Damaa, Mariana Silva Kokudai, Sophia Correa, Antonio Andrade, Ana Luiza Meira Justo, Barbara Lara, Barbara Monte Alto, Eduardo Serpa, and Mel de Melo Arantes. The NJHS chapter put into practice a leadership project in April 2021 in which students invited CEOs of tech companies to participate in a cycle of lectures.
Sandra Montes, Vice President of Marketing for OLX and the mother of two of Chapel students, presented the first lecture.
National Honor Society (NHS)
Advisor: Mr. Bryan Sanders
The NHS is a worldwide organization with a specific focus on community service. At Chapel, members meet every Tuesday at 7 a.m. to elaborate on projects which benefit our local community. Membership is selective and candidates must adhere to four key pillars: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. This year the NHS implemented a series of projects, including raising money for outreach organization Fogao Na Rua (which assists the homeless) and internal community wellness campaigns to provide support and connection to the students in the Chapel community. Due to Covid and the ensuing pandemic, our meetings and planning sessions have been entirely online. But we have been surprisingly effective at promoting community virtually within the school through our Chapel NHS Instagram page @chapelnhs and raising money for those in need. Next year we intend to carry out even more projects. Members: Guadalupe Lastra (Co-President), Amanda Monte Alto (Co-President), Pedro Loureiro (Vice-President), Francisco Prado (Secretary), Qing Tian Huang, Elren Chae, Antonella Valbuena, Guilherme Vercelli, Isabela Kokudai, Matheus Vourodimos, Sofia Azevedo, Valentina Elias, Sofia Velasco, and new members Luisa Tolda, Bruna Simoes, Bruno Monte Alto, and Marina Silva.
STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Advisor: Mr. Bruno D’Elia
STEM Club is a student-led club that is held every Monday from 7:10 to 7:55 in Room 21A. We use the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to research and carry out a multitude of projects with real-world applications. This is not only a club for students who want to pursue a STEM career, but also a place for those looking for an amusing environment to discuss any topic from medicine to robot domination. The main highlights of this year were the passionate STEM-related debates and fun tournaments we carried out, as well as projects like constructing a ‘shirt cannon’ and a bird house. The students in the club are: Amanda Monte Alto, Bobby Huang, Omar Daher, Yeongin (Elren) Chae, and Zion Fontana.
Math Team
Advisors: Mr. Jaisen Bell and Ms. Marina Cajado
This year the Math Team participated in the Math Kangaroo Competition, an international competition that annually gathers around 6 million participants from more than 80 countries. Chapel had several award winners: Yeongin (Elren) Chae (Grade 11) earned gold for scoring in the top 1% in Brazil; Beatriz Abram (Grade 8) earned silver (top 2%); and Qing Tian (Bobby) Huang (Grade 12) received honorable mention (top 4% in the country). Pedro Loureiro (Grade 11) scored high enough to also earn honorable mention (top 4%), but he was not awarded, since only 10% of any school's participants can receive honors when the test is taken online. Students who participated this year are: Amanda Monte Alto, Ana Clara Martins, André Laranja, Beatriz Abram, Bruno Pereira, Gabriela Rueda Gonzalez, João Reszecki, Luisa de Marchi, Mariana Menezes, Pedro Loureiro, Qingtian Huang (Bobby, Rebecca Jensen Sykora, So Min Park, Valentina Domiano, and Yeongin Chae (Elren)
Yearbook Club
Advisor: Ms. Fernanda Caires
The Yearbook Club aims to provide an opportunity for Chapel students to learn about teamwork, responsibility, brainstorming, content, writing, headlines, captions, editing, photography, and graphic design. All members work together to create a yearbook that captures the contributions and achievements of our Chapel community, as well as highlight and preserve the memories of each school year. During the 2020-2021 school year, the club worked on the production of this very special yearbook and took great pride in it. The Yearbook Club is open to students from 9th to 12th grades. Meetings take place every Monday and Tuesday at 3:15 pm. Previous knowledge on Photoshop and InDesign are desirable. Our members this year are: Isabella Franchini, Leticia Barbosa, Luana Moussa, Mariana Cadore, and Sofia Buazar.
Art ECEC
This year was an atypical year, but that did not stop students from creating beautiful pieces of Art. They showed creativity, persistence, and a lot of imagination through activities based on the elements of art. The Art Department offered extensive knowledge and a variety of materials. Students improved their artistic vocabulary, learned more about different cultures, and participated in interdisciplinary. Keep up the hard work, my little artists!
Ms. Camila Costa
This was an atypical year for the students, but we continued to be creative and learn about the elements of art. The students were able to experience art at home and at school, and we fostered the sense of belonging to the community. During the online Art classes we had parents and siblings participating in the art experiences, and creating art together as a family. Students were able to express themselves during these classes using different types of materials and techniques.
Ms. Cristina El Dib
Art Elementary School
Art High School
What a different school year this was, and still we had it filled with ART! Through remote and hybrid learning students gained experience with many different techniques and art styles. Students received individual art kits with all the materials they needed to produce amazing compositions. To support our students there was also an ‘Art Lab’ (on campus when possible and once a week via Zoom) to enrich students' learning. Once again our students designed beautiful covers for the Chapel Agenda contest. Some of our 7th Graders' experiences included shading with pencils and coloring pencils, learning about foreground, middle ground and background using modeling paste, and creating a character using acrylic paint on canvas. Some of our 8th Graders' experiences included using dry materials on optical art and pop art compositions. They also explored colors using acrylic paint and a color wheel. They built a fantastic creature using cold porcelain. Some of our 9th graders' experiences included creating light contrast on drawings done on black papers. Students portrayed moments from their vacation, applied all the colors of the spectrum to a canvas, and finger-painted on a wooden board using modeling paste. Some of our 10th graders' experiences included learning more about color schemes through oil pastels, and creating two dimensional landscapes with modeling paste. They also created a surreal painting about pandemics using acrylic paint. Our IB Art students explored different techniques and continued their individual production of studio works. They also experimented with many materials and researched a variety of cultures through their Investigation Books, as well as through their comparative study. And on a final note, though the IB Art show this year was smaller compared to previous years it was still stunning! Congratulations dear Art students. I am very proud of you!
Ms. Sylvia Almeida
Due to the pandemic, schools in São Paulo could not participate in competitions and interschool events during the 2020-2021 academic year. To keep our students healthy and engaged in physical activities, at the end of August 2020, Chapel offered online extracurricular activities for Elementary and High School students. Students participated in activities such as pilates, functional training, basketball, yoga, Chinese, cooking, crocheting, and gardening, to name a few. Then in October 2020, Chapel resumed in-person extracurricular activities on campus, such as individual soccer and individual basketball practices. Health and safety protocols were followed during all sports practices and activities on campus.

I would like to share one of our most emotional moments of the pandemic: when our Isabella decided to make a card to honor her teachers on Teachers’ Day! She had not even met her teachers in person, but she already felt such love for them! It was so special to see this affection and to feel the warmth in the eyes of every Chapel teacher and staff member. You guys are the best!! - The Morata family Isabella Morata, Kindergarten
Remote learning was a real challenge, but the love, patience, creativity, and dedication that teachers put into it every day made it so much easier!
Benjamin Godoy, Pre I
- Enjoying Ms. Gabriela’s amazing cooking classes. Thank you, Ms. Gabriela! Love your fantastic classes.
- Little Ms. Wade! Feeling so grateful to all Chapel teachers who gave their best during these difficult times.
- What amazing videos Ms. Karina prepared! You deserve an Oscar because of your beautiful smile that brought us comfort in these difficult times. We love you!
- Helping each other during quarantine. Love these positive moments during lockdown.
- Funny hairstyle! We love it. Thank you, teachers, for all your creativity that brought us smiles.
- Sometimes homeschooling was super hard. We missed going to school. Hope we could hide in a box from reality like Nico did. Nicolas Mazzini, 2nd grade and Clara Mazzini, 5th grade
This was a very unique year, especially considering it wasHelena’s first year at school and Henrique moved to the Elementary School! There were so many memorable moments: Meeting the teachers for the first time at the drive-through; the first-ever day at school after 4 months online; online classes (almost a miracle!); new activities such as yoga, as well as cooking on special dates!
Remote learning was challenging but fun and rewarding, as the kids learned how to be adaptable - a lifelong skill!
Helena Brandão, Pre I and Henrique Brandão, 1st grade
Marina and I chose a few photos that capture how Chapel, in such a special and professional manner, managed to transform these “difficult times” (during the pandemic) into sweet and memorable home learning. My “Classroom” at home – celebrating 30 days of home learning, thinking it would all be over soon….LOL
Thank you, Chapel, for every gesture, for all the care and tenderness and the smooth transition from face-to-face to virtual learning. Thanks for always being available!
Daniela Hammerat (Mother) and Marina Almeida (3rd grade)
Carolina takes home learning very seriously. Every day she chooses just the right ‘look’. The most important milestone this year was that she started to write her last name while online.

This was an unusual year! Some difficult moments, but valuable for our little ones. They learned that we can and must adapt to everything that life hands us; that with effort and dedication, anything is possible. They learned in a light and fun way, thanks to the great teachers at Chapel! Thank you for your dedication, your patience, and above all, for bringing the school into our homes in such uncertain and challenging times.
Gibran Taha, Pre II and Aysha Taha, Pre I
As a mother, I would like to share with you some important moments of inspiration, using innovative types of playdough created from corn dough for nachos or even Luisa’s crayons. They gave her an opportunity to express what she was feeling and, above all, to see things from a different perspective.
Roberta Funaro, Mother and Luisa Yoshimoto, 2nd grade
In 2020, during home learning, I learned how to do a 3D form shape in Mr. Otávio’s technology class.
Tony Choo, 3rd grade
During my first semester of home learning, I attended cooking class and I made this wonderful apple pie!!
Davi Choo, 5th grade
Some of the best moments that Gahyun had during remote learning were during Art classes, but there were many other good moments! She started to go to Chapel in January 2021 and coming to school to meet the teacher and friends was a very special day!
Gahyun Kim, 3rd grade
Even though on-line learning was unexpected and unusual, we saw the school come into our homes, motivating and bringing joy to our children, developing activities with materials we had around the house, like playing cards, plants, plastic bottles, paint, coins, cords, cups, and more. Art was portrayed through nature, sounds emerged from cups, and math was made more interesting with letters, coins, and bingo games. Beyond engagement, the dedication and love of the teachers were essential in overcoming the immense challenges of the pandemic.
Perrelli Family – Letícia Perrelli, 3rd grade, Luis Felipe Perrelli, 9th grade
While Duda has always taken her remote learning activities very carefully, Manu notably prefers to study in-person and not online!
Maria Eduarda Salgado, 5th, and Manuela Salgado, 3rd grade
“I liked school at home because you can spend more time with your family and you get to do classes in a different order if you want. I like going to school because you get to play with your friends and meet different teachers.”
William Koppy, 1st Grade
“I liked being able to help my sister with her activities.”
Oliver Koppy, Kindergarten
“I like the real Chapel School!”
Shea Koppy, Pre I
The past school year was difficult in so many aspects, but here are a few examples of the silver lining behind this dark cloud:
- Participating in the first MUN Conference in November 2020
- Solving Math problems with the help of a pet
- Traveling and attending school at the same time!
Thank you very much to all Chapel students, teachers, and staff, for effectively ‘changing the tire while driving it’!
Glaser Family - Leo Glaser, 9th grade, and Daniel Glaser, 7th grade
Chapel’s hybrid teaching has enabled children to learn a new way of studying. Starting the year in Kinder during the pandemic was very challenging for Carol, as she was becoming familiar with the alphabet. With the efforts of teachers and assistants, Carol was able to learn to read and write.
We hope that soon we can go every day to face-to-face classes and that we will have good memories of home learning.
Ana Carolina Ohara, Kindergarten
We chose a few moments from this year… Every day, Laura chose a different part of the house to be her classroom. The day in the bathtub was the most fun!
The story was so relaxing that Pedro fell asleep. Since we couldn’t go to school with our friends, we recreated the school inside our home.
Laura Jesus, 3rd grade, and Pedro Jesus, Pre II
The day I finally met my teacher, Ms. Gabriela, in person (Children’s Day at Chapel Drive-Through). It took me a long time to get to this very special moment of face-to-face interaction.
Homeschooling on a cold day: the advantage of remote learning is being able to stay cozy at home, close to mommy and daddy.
Nicholas Ribeiro, 2nd grade
