Chapel Aeneid 2021-2022
This was a year of new beginnings and gradually getting back to normal. We know that not everything will be the same as before but we also know that after two years of the pandemic we are stronger, better, and more united as a community.
The theme “Lights, Camera, Trojans!” was chosen because, just like a film, this year made us experience several different emotions such as happiness, excitement, sadness and thrill. We all went through our ups and downs. We had our moments of laughter, our moments of suspense and our moments of pure joy.
We all played an important role in the story of the 2021-2022 school year, as individuals and as part of a community. This year took us through a journey full of challenges, and now we have all made it to the red carpet! After all, we are all Trojans and we all deserve to have made it here. We hope you enjoy this yearbook.

Chapel School defines Learning as a unique and lifelong process sparked by the interests, curiosities, interactions, and experiences of the individual. It builds on previous knowledge and leads to making meaningful connections. It is the process of understanding and acquiring knowledge, skills and dispositions as well as being able to apply them to different settings and contexts. It involves learner development as a whole addressing social, emotional, cognitive and physical dimensions. Learning has the higher purpose to positively impact society.

2021-2022 Timeline
Chapel School continued with the anti-Covid 19 measures and preparing for the 2021-2022 school year.
July
August
First day of school on August 4th. Students returned to campus. A new pick-up and arrival procedure was adopted. Gates would open at 2:45 p.m. for ECEC and ES families and at 3:05 p.m. for HS families and families with children in more than one school division. Self check-in totems were placed at the entrance of the school divisions. Air conditioners were allowed to be turned on in the afternoon.
The Snack Bar was reopened.
September
October
São Paulo HS League games resumed, but required a covid test for games. In-person classes became mandatory for all students except if a student tested positive for Covid-19.
ECEC and ES parents were allowed to pick up their children in the classrooms, and the whole school readopted the afternoon dismissal model that was in place prior to the pandemic. The onemeter distancing between tables was no longer needed. The ES and HS library reopened for all students.
November
December
Classes adjourned on December 15th for the summer break.
Due to a spike in the number of cases of the Omicron variant, classes that were scheduled to start on January 26th had to be postponed to January 31st.
January
Feburary
A new protocol was implemented for covid cases. The period in which a person needed to isolate decreased from 14 to 5 days, in case the person tested negative for covid on the 5th day. Covid tests were no longer required for São Paulo HS League games.
On the 9th of March the use of masks in open environments was no longer mandatory. On the 17th of March, masks were no longer required in all environments, except in public transportation and medical facilities. Students were allowed to self-serve in the school buffet in the cafeteria. The system of people transit, arrow stickers, and divisions in the hallway was removed.

Parent-teacher conferences resumed on campus, with virtual meetings remaining an option.
Body temperature measurement was no loger required at the entrance of the school buildings.

I remember the day I got into Chapel in 2015 – everything seemed like a dream to me from the huge campus to my friends and teachers. I remember looking at the yearbook and wondering that one day I would have my senior page in the Yearbook. Here I am. Things went by so fast. I experienced so many moments of joy, happiness, laughing about silly things with my friends in class, challenges and lots of stressful moments that made me learn and grow. I would like to thank each one of you for the last two years at Chapel. I could not imagine starting at a new school in 10th grade and being received as well as I was at Chapel. Unfortunately the pandemic came, and we could not spend more time together. When we came back after more than a year of online learning I felt like if we had stayed at school the whole time, everyone would have treated me well and helped to make my last year of school amazing. I would also like to thank all the teachers and the staff for everything they did to help me academically.

I remember coming to Chapel on the first day. Coming from a Brazilian school, everything was new to me. I didn’t know anyone or any of the American customs. But in the end, I feel that I adapted very well to this new environment, mainly because of the people I met here. Without friends, I feel like I wouldn’t have had anyone to ask for help whenever I needed it, and of course, wouldn’t have been able to help you guys when you needed it. The experiences I had throughout my time at Chapel have left me fulfilled in unforgettable ways. I started my first year at Chapel not only as a Junior, but also during the pandemic. I had to adapt myself to moving to Brazil, to the IB courses, and even the online classes which I never had had before. Though it was a difficult process, I could not have been as embraced and comforted by a school as I was by Chapel. Everyone including teachers and friends were always understanding and kind not only during my first days, but throughout my journey here at Chapel.
There was a sense of community that I had never experienced before in other schools. Studying at Chapel during my last years of high school was the best opportunity for academic growth and happiness.
Mom and Dad: You offered me diverse opportunities for development and growth on which I look back with immense gratitude. Thank you for always being by my side throughout this time!
Enzo: I am so proud of you for always performing your best and showing everyone how amazing you are! I love you and will always be by your side!

It is even strange to propose to write this text. For some reason, I hoped that when the time came, I’d know exactly what to say, but that’s clearly not the case. I spent so much time imagining what the end of this cycle would be like that I forgot to consider that somehow it will never end. The bond I built with Chapel and everyone who passed through its community is eternal; it’s almost like they’re a part of me. I feel intimate with the school (which surprises me), as if I belong there. Its environment is so comfortable and natural that it frankly scares me to know that I will stop going there. I think all the things I’d like to leave here – but don’t know exactly how – are summed up with a wistful (but happy) “thank you”. I feel grateful, above all, for being able to find at Chapel a safe place that has given me so many life experiences. I especially dedicate my thanks to all who share in some way the same feeling of tenderness towards Chapel; either by the school itself, or any of its characteristics. It is you who make it uniquely familiar and therefore fill me with joy. I am genuinely happy to have been able to meet everyone I met through Chapel and with great luck, I will be able to take them with me (if only in memory). To my dear friends, who have accepted me so kindly: it is imperative that you give me news. In this regard, I will be completely uncompromising! I make a point of declaring our friendship publicly so that there is no doubt about its existence. I won’t name names, however – you know me well enough to know who you are! I might have been at Chapel only for 2 years, with one of them being fully online. Despite that, I could not have been more thankful for being part of such a welcoming community even if for a very brief period of time. That being said, I strongly wish that I had the opportunity to spend more time with all of my classmates and I strongly wish we had been able to bond more. Despite that, I write this with the feeling that we were good friends. I am also extremely grateful for all the teachers that have been assisting me throughout these last years, as I would not have been able to pull through without them.

I started training last semester and played my first game just this last semester, but I’ve been captivated by the sport and that’s largely due to everyone on the basketball team. We’re a small but tight-knit team, and it’s great to see how far we’ve come. Soccer team: My participation on the football team was one of my best experiences during my time at Chapel. As much as we had the
pandemic in the middle of our varsity years, it has been a super cool experience anyway. All training, games and championships! Softball & Volleyball Teams: I had so much fun training! I joined Chapel with the belief that after no more than one year in school, I would be leaving to live in the USA; however, my plans changed, and I am glad they did or I would not have met the wonderful people that are part of my life today.
Isa: Isa, I don’t even know what to say about you because how much you’ve contributed to my life since my first day at Chapel is surreal. I feel so lucky to have such a caring and talented person in my life and especially to be able to consider you a best friend: )
Elren: Elren, when I first met you I thought “How is she so good in school?” But over the months we have spent together I have realized your academics are not the only thing you are good at. You are the most random person I know and I love it. You make me laugh all the time for no reason. Our long calls are amazing (even though the rest of the time it’s like you don’t have a phone) and I could literally spend hours talking to you and never get bored! I am so grateful to have you in my life and to be able to invite myself to Korea (be prepared).
Kitt: Kitt, I know we don’t even study together but you’ve made me laugh, you’ve supported me, and distracted me through FaceTime from my first day at Chapel until graduation! You know you are one of the most important people in my life and I cannot even imagine the past six years of my life without you in it. I am so glad you were able to come to Brazil and see what my life is like and now I can’t wait to move closer to you so that we can be even more present in each other’s lives.

I’ve been at Chapel longer than in any other school, and I’ve lived in my first house in Brazil longer than in any other house. In my 18 years of life, Chapel and Brazil take up more than 20%. I’ve learned and grown so much in these 4 years. Nina: Nina, I’m gonna miss you a lot. It was so nice to live close by and hang out. I’m thankful that I’ve met someone as genuinely kind as you. Thank you for your belief in me; sometimes you believed in me more than I believed in myself. Talking to you was always so comfortable, because you were considerate and never judgemental. I feel like no matter the situation, you’ll always find a way to reach your passion and ambitions. Let’s dream big and become healthy, rich, and happy. Also, I know we both won’t text each other much, so let’s call for 5 hours once in several months or meet up in a new country and go on trips. Isa: Isa! You’re an adorable friend. Thank you for making my nickname El, which became so special to me now. I have a thousand more big and small things to thank you for, but in summary, you’re a really caring and considerate person, and I swear that everyone sees these values in you. João, Queridão, Nem acredito que esse dia chegou e que delícia foi a sua trajetória na Chapel. Você soube aproveitar esse período maravilhoso de sua vida e enfrentar as dificuldades que ocorreram com muita maturidade. Apesar de algumas vezes ter sido chamado para “acalmar” momentos de “bagunça”, pude acompanhar o seu entusiasmo em frequentar diariamente a escola e, em particular, as atividades e competições esportivas que tanto adora. A conclusão do Ensino Médio é uma conquista muito importante, e o conhecimento e as amizades que adquiriu irão acompanhá-lo para o resto da vida. The Art Lab is a safe and welcoming place for students to gather and make art when it is possible for them. Many students come to every Art Lab while others come weekly or monthly. It is the space students have in which to produce artwork for other subjects, for their CAS hours dedicated to Creativity, as well as just for fun. In addition, students who need to finish an art project or have questions about a unit often come to Art Lab for support. Art Lab meetings happen Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The relaxed environment of the Art Lab also welcomes students who enjoy music; while some are producing their art, others might be experimenting with the acoustic guitar, the ukulele or our cajón (a traditional percussion instrument from Peru). Lovely moments to see students blossoming in so many artistic areas! I hope the Arts continue to be a part of your lives! The Chapel Investment Club’s principal mission is to teach its members to become more informed investors. In the spring, the club participated in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition from the University of Pennsylvania in which the club designed and maintained an investment portfolio for an imaginary client. In the fall, the group created educational videos to help the Chapel community learn the basics about investing and finance. In weekly meetings the club teaches analytic techniques to its members and reviews current events of interest to investors. Student members take turns presenting material they have prepared and work collaboratively to tackle tasks and finish projects. Computer Programming

The Computer Programming Club aims to motivate students to develop their personal skills in the area of computer science by solving problems, learning new programming languages, and making new projects. Some further goals are to create a community that is interested in programming and have fun with something that the students like to do. Computer Programming Club happens Tuesdays after school from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. In the past semester all members were able to learn the basics of python and create mini games with pygames. This semester we are going to work on our skills in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Hopefully we will create a website by the end of the semester. All students in the High School have the opportunity to participate in the Computer Programming Club. The students that are enrolled in the club are: Alef Chahoud, Gabriel Fernandes, Fernando de Faria, Fernando Ribeiro, Lara Cavalcanti, Marcel Moura, Vibha Komala, and Mateus Becklas.
Drama Club

The Drama Club provides students with the opportunity to express themselves through the performing arts, where they learn to develop skills such as creativity, improvisation, expression through body language and empathy. Additionally, the club creates a safe and supportive environment where students can get to know each other and develop their skills and passion for drama. Drama Club happens every Tuesday after school from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.. During the school year, students take part in activities and short games in which they rely on their abilities to improvise and think creatively while using their bodies and oral expression. In addition, they also stage skits where they develop skills such as teamwork, interpretation, and tone of voice. Most recently students worked on the short play Sixteen in 10 Minutes or Less performed in May of 2022! Glee Club
Glee Club is a place where singers gather to practice and perform pop and musical theater arrangements. Students sing in different voices, explore and develop their singing techniques, learn how to perform, sing expressively, and have a good time while doing all the above.
In 2021-2022, Glee Club members have sung pop song mashups, famous musicals, songs from movies, as well as arrangements especially made for them. The club performed in many HS Acoustic Performances on Fridays. Many participants also sang at masses and celebrations. Glee Club meets on Fridays from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.

Kino Film Production club

The Kino Film Club is inspired by the KINO Project, “a [1999] film-making movement that advocates the production of short-films on little to no budget, using small crews, and non-competitive collaboration.”* This experience helped us realize the amount of sacrifice that goes into producing films.
From brainstorming the argument to showing the movie, going through writing the script, choosing the shots, casting the actors, filming the scenes, editing the footage, composing the score, we were able to devote ourselves to the art of filmmaking. This year’s members are: Clara Rede, Daniel Agapito, Isabela Maesano, Lara Cavalcanti, Luna Shin, and Valentina Anzanello.

Knowledge Bowl
Knowledge Bowl is an academic tournament consisting of various international schools in Brazil, Chile, and Panama. Teams work collaboratively and apply their multidisciplinary knowledge to answer questions in various subjects ranging from mathematics and history to popular culture. Students are able to meet like-minded students from other schools at competitions. Due to the pandemic, however, we have had to put a hold on our travel plans. But we successfully won two trophies (2nd and 3rd place) in the EARJ online competition! The team is excited about future travel and competitions. We practice during lunch on Fridays at the tables past the snack bar. Any High School student is able to join our Knowledge Bowl Club and attend weekly practices. If competing and traveling excite you, consider joining us as we actively recruit members. This year’s Knowledge Bowl club consisted of Yeongin Chae (Elren) (Captain), Beatriz Abram, Pedro Loureiro, Meredith Mcculloch, Alma Castañares, Antonio Andrade, Luciano de Antoni, Bernardo Freitas, Mathias Reimer, Fernando Ribeiro, Laura Santiago, Marina Silva, and Marco Montini, with other participants coming from time to time to test their skill and knowledge.
Math Club

The Math Club is a safe space where students can tackle more challenging math problems, develop their problem solving skills, and train for international competitions. Students get to understand and share problem-solving strategies and appreciate Math in different ways, building an appreciation for the beauty of this code. Our meetings happen Thursdays from 3:20 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Students have been participating in the ongoing math competition, ASMA, and have participated in the Canguru de Matemática international competition this March. High School students participating in the Club are: Derick Galhardo, Gabriel Fernandes, Jenny Yiran Zhang, Qianyu Zhou (Miranda), and Vibha Komala.

Med
The Med Club discusses current topics in medicine, not only information about diseases and preventative measures, but also bringing to the group an immersive debate about symptoms and how to act appropriately in unusual cases. The Med Club’s main goals are to develop students’ critical thinking and communication skills, as well as create a friendly environment in which to share experiences while building appreciation for learning topics in the medical field. The meetings take place every Tuesday from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 pm in Room 20. The students have discussed many topics, such as covid-19, the Heimlich maneuver, depression, vaccines and the “anti-vax” movement, strokes, signs of stress in teenagers, and many other thought-provoking themes. Model United Nations and Junior Model United Nations
Advisor: Mr. Donald Campbell
Model United Nations (MUN) aims to promote awareness of global issues through the simulation of the United Nations and related international organizations. Students met every Friday after school throughout the year to practice debating controversial issues, to conduct research on current political events, and to refine speaking and writing skills needed for MUN conferences. During club meeting time, we even hosted one internal conference, ChaMUN, each semester. During the first semester ChaMUN, Lorenzo Perrotti was recognized as “Best Delegate” and Gabriel Lins earned “Honorable Mention” in a debate about the conflict in Yemen. The second semester conference included some new members with strong performances. Ana Clara Martins was recognized for her contributions and won the “Best Newbie” award, and seasoned veteran Martin Castellanos took home the honor of “Best Delegate” for his work representing Ukraine in the current crisis with Russia. The lingering effects of the pandemic shifted most official MUN conferences to an online structure. In November 2021, students participated in RioMUN, a hybrid conference hosted by EARJ which we attended online. Chapel students excelled, being honored in every committee in which we participated. Awards went to the following students: “Best Speaker” for Marina Silva for representing Afghanistan in the Security Council; Lorenzo Perrotti earned “Honorable Mention” as Switzerland in the Human Rights Council; Pablo Pereira e Silva earned “Honorable Mention” for his representation of Nofor Kaldorim in a special Star Wars committee; and Martin Castellanos won the highest honor, “Best Delegation,” representing Agamemnon in a special Trojan War committee. The biggest conference of the year, BRAMUN, which brings together over 400 delegates from all over Brazil and Latin America, showed promise of being a face-to-face event, but a surge in cases in January led organizers to move this conference at the end of March to an online format. Marina Silva was selected to serve as one of the leaders of the conference, serving as vice-chair of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Amazingly, all of Chapel’s participating delegates earned awards for their performance at the conference: For her role as Chinese President Xi Jinping III in the futuristic 2086 Organization of Joint Nations, Ana Clara Martins received “Honorable Mention.” Representing the delegation of the United States, Lorenzo Perrotti earned “Best Speaker” in the Human Rights Council. In a special Harry Potter committee, Bruno Monte Alto was also recognized as “Best Speaker” for his work as Barty Crouch. Additionally, we had two students earn the highest honor in their committees: Martin Castellanos won “Best Delegate” in the Trial of Henry VIII playing the role of the king himself, and Toni Serres won “Best Delegate” in the Historical Security Council representing Iran. The club concluded the year in grand fashion, attending its first on-site conference in almost three years. MUNICKS, hosted by St. Nicholas School in Pinheiros, brought together students from four different schools to have in-person debates. Marina Santos Silva and Lorenzo Perrotti were selected to lead one of the committees, and four Chapel delegates took home awards: Gabriel Lins won “Best Speaker,” Toni Serres Tomas won “Outstanding Delegation,” and both Pablo Guimarães Silva and Martin Castellanos Garcia won “Best Delegate” in their respective committees.

NHS National Honor Society
Advisor: Mr. Bryan Sanders
The NHS is a worldwide organization with a specific focus on community service. At Chapel, members meet every Wednesday after school to elaborate on projects which benefit our local community. Membership is selective and candidates must adhere to four key pillars: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Starting in April 2022, students worked on a required yearly Personal Service Project (similar to an Eagle Scout Project for Boy Scouts). This year, the NHS implemented a series of projects, including raising money for outreach organization Fogão Na Rua (which assists the homeless) and internal community wellness campaigns to provide support and connection to the students in the Chapel community. Group projects for the next year include: a walk-a-thon to raise money for the homeless and a blanket drive. NJHs Nationaljunior Honor Society
Advisor: Mr. Érico Padilha
Chapel School’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) chapter concluded a semester of activity with another competitive selection process. In all, 46 students with a high academic performance (GPA equal to or above 3.2), competed for 10 vacancies in the chapter.
Having attended weekly meetings of the NJHS, the candidates were evaluated according to their academic knowledge, as well as character, peer leadership, and the provision of services both within and outside the Chapel community. It was against this backdrop of community engagement that the students raised approximately 50 kg of powdered milk, all of which was delivered to the Take Action Club (TAC) which is partnered with several philanthropic institutions.
At the end of the selection process, 10 students were admitted to this rewarding honors club. Our meetings are held on Tuesdays from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. in Room 27. With two permanent projects, Tampinha Legal and E-trash, both conceived, developed and materialized by students, the NJHS promotes environmental awareness campaigns and practices philanthropy.
STEM Club

STEM Club is a student-led club that is held every Wednesday in Room 21A from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm. We use the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to research and carry out a multitude of projects with real-world applications. This is not only a club for students who want to pursue a STEM career, but also a place for those who are looking for an amusing environment to discuss anything from medicine to robot domination. The main highlights of this year were projects like the cloud chamber, bridge challenge, and heat shield challenge. The students that participated in the club are: Mateus Becklas, Nicolas Garzón, Nicolas Razzotti, Enzo Heine, Alef Chahoud, Luis Castro, and Marcel Moura.
StuCo Student Council

The Student Council is a group of elected grade representatives who strive to make Chapel more welcoming to students and staff alike. StuCo does this by promoting school spirit and creating a united community with 1st semester events like the 7th Grade Fun Night, Spirit Week, Pep Rally and the Halloween Costume Contest. Our 2nd semester was also filled with fun events like the Valentine’s Day Grams and many others.
StuCo meets every Thursday after school in Room 22 and it is advised by Mr. Kuroiwa and Mr. Silveira. The StuCo executive team includes Pedro Loureiro (President), Carolina Versolato (Vice President), Giovana Vasconcellos (Secretary), and Bruno Monte Alto (Treasurer). TAC Take Action Club

Students in the Take Action Club (TAC) get together every week to develop social projects to help people in need. The members of the club spend their time brainstorming, planning and executing charity projects.
The club meets every Wednesday from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. in the art hut, and is supervised by Ms. Cris El Dib. The students created projects through the semester, and TAKE ACTION to help! Apart from more formal meetings, the club is usually a relaxed place where we work together to achieve our goals.

Wonders of Science

Wonders of Science is, most importantly, a club about scientific thinking, but also about how we can apply the great discoveries of science in our everyday life with practical experiments. This is a club created by students and for students, in which the discussion of ideas, logical thinking, creativity and freedom of thought are encouraged.The meetings have been led by Pedro Loureiro under Mr Silveira’s supervision every Friday after school from 3:20 p.m to 4:20 p.m. in Room 20. This school year, we explored parts of all of the three main fields of science: chemistry, biology, and physics. We carried out such experiments as lighting fires of different colors, levitating plastic bags with static electricity, instantly solidifying liquids, turning pennies into gold, and much more. Our most common attendees were Mateus Becklas, Leonardo Glaser, Yoonho Dong (Ben), Derick Galhardo, Clara Gauthier, Julia Madoery, Vibha Komala, Qianyu Zhou (Miranda), and Lorena Cardoso.

The Yearbook Club is a great opportunity for Chapel students to learn about teamwork, responsibility, brainstorming, content, writing, headlines, captions, editing, photography, and graphic design. All members work together to create a yearbook that captures the contributions and achievements of our Chapel community, as well as highlight and preserve the memories of each school year. During the 2021-2022 school year, the club worked on the production of this yearbook “Lights, Camera, Trojans!” and took great pride in it. The Yearbook Club is open to students from 9th to 12th grades. Meetings take place every Wednesday and Thursday at 3:15 pm. Previous knowledge on Photoshop and InDesign are desirable. Our members this year were: Antonio Tavares, Carolina Versolato, Clara Gauthier, Hanna Joo, Juliana Luz, Laura Santiago, Leonardo Glaser, Luisa Ventura, and Nina Guimarães.
Throughout the year, ECEC students learned all about the elements of art, such as color, value, line, shape, form, and texture. Students created beautiful masterpieces and engaged in our activities. Our ECEC artists also participated in an extraordinary project inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. After observing several references, they enjoyed painting one of the walls in our playground. This wall has a token of each of our ECEC artists. They have appreciated their artwork all year long.

Students in the Elementary School weekly explore and learn about all the elements of art such as color, value, line, shape, form, and texture. Students practice different skills and are exposed to several techniques. They engage in painting, drawing, collage and mixed media, and art appreciation activities throughout the school year. In ES, students have art classes in the Art Hut and are immersed in an environment which promotes and fosters artistic knowledge and experiences.

High School Art was AMAZING in the 2021-2022 school year. We finally met in person, shared materials, and produced art in our Art room, optimizing learning and achieving high standards. Students in Grades 7-10 were able to explore drawing, improve shading skills, use acrylic paint on different size canvases and folders, make prints with Linóleo, make and glaze ceramics, as well as experiment with mixed media. Our seniors produced incredible studio works throughout the two years of the IB Art course, which resulted in a fantastic Seniors’ IB Art Show. This year we had four outstanding students in Grade 12 with great “art personalities,” and the individuality in their Art Show was evident and captivating. Students in Grade 11 are preparing for the 2023 Senior’s IB Art Show. We can’t wait to see their exhibition! NBA Basketball Schools are a network of basketball development programs around the world open to both male and female players ages 6-18. The NBA Basketball School is unique in its approach based on “the NBA way” of developing players in a structured program and environment focused on skill development and promoting positive values such as integrity, teamwork, respect, and determination. The program’s mission is to inspire young athletes and to provide a unique development opportunity through exposure to established coaches with proven training techniques.
