EXHIBITION Countdown to the 47th Chapel Art Show Opening In two days the 47th Chapel Art Show will begin. The exhibition will open to invited guests on the 17th-starting at 8pm, with a cocktail - and the following day until October 23rd it can be enjoyed by the general public daily from 9am to 9pm. Bringing together works of one hundred and thirty artists, this edition of the Art Show will honor the renowned painter, draftsman, engraver, and teacher Sergio Fingermann. Sergio studied architecture in Brazil, painting and drawing in Italy, and was a disciple of great names in Brazilian art. He met Tarsila do Amaral as a child and became her friend. He will be present for the opening night and also on other days of the exhibition. Like previous editions, all Chapel students will visit the event and participate in specific artistic activities for each age group. Organized by the Art Show Education Program, in conjunction with the arts curriculum coordinators, department teachers, and principals, the activities propose practice and reflection on the visual arts, helping students to enjoy this true contemporary art gallery set up within the school. All proceeds from the sale of art in this edition will go to the Santo Eugenio social school maintained by the Oblates. Chapel is pleased to invite the community to honor yet another edition of the traditional art and education event.

TEACHER'S DAY Diversity and Excellence Distinguish the Faculty at Chapel According to Mario Sergio Cortella, "A teacher is one who shares what he knows, seeks what he does not know, practices what he teaches, asks what he ignores, and seeks that which is the ability to not be exclusive." For him, teaching is not just a profession, but "a way of existing." In a few words the philosopher can portray the profile of this professional, whose role becomes more essential every day. At Chapel there is one teacher for every six students and one of the distinct aspects of the faculty is its cultural diversity. Characteristic of an international educational institution there is a presence of foreign teachers - coupled with the heterogeneous nature of Brazilian teachers – which encourages the creation of a dynamic environment in which multiculturalism is the driving force towards the formation of global citizens. Responsible for ensuring the excellence in teaching offered since the school was founded 72 years ago, Chapel teachers are continually encouraged to attend congresses, seminars, and specialization and development courses. For this reason, dozens of faculty trips - including mentors, coordinators, and principals - take place during the year to destinations in Brazil and abroad, either for teachers to improve their knowledge or to disseminate teaching methods and practices developed at Chapel. It is no accident that all teachers are experts in their field and most hold masters and doctorate degrees. On this Teacher's Day, Chapel honors and thanks all faculty for this successful partnership!

ECEC Students Greet Spring with Arts and Flowers During the week of September 23rd, which marks the beginning of spring in the southern hemisphere, early childhood students began a new study unit by painting ceramic pots and planting flowers in the colorful containers. According to Monica Rossini, a Pre II teacher, the tradition of celebrating the arrival of spring "is a way to approach content that is abstract to students, such as the seasons." According to her, these celebrations allow the development of various contents such as: language, nature and society, socio-effective issues, and respect for the environment. “It is important that everything is contextualized and that there is integration between what we work on in the classroom and what we see outside it,” adds Ms. Rossini. Taking advantage of the previous unit, which was nutrition, the students' first activity was to make fruit kebabs and the week ended with a picnic. “We study flowers as part of the study of plants and then move on to vegetables, legumes, and other edibles,” says Ms. Rossini. She says such activities help students develop responsibility for the space they occupy and encourage sharing. ECEC Director Conchita Kennedy explains that there is a curricular alignment so that topics are addressed in more depth as one moves to higher grades. “Kindergarten is already working with trees and seeds. Soon they will sow basil and coriander in small gardens and the herbs can be used in the recipes we make in the classroom,”says Ms. Kennedy. The principal comments that spring is a rewarding and timely theme because it can be worked in a multidisciplinary way: “There are several subjects involved in the theme. Moreover, children are exposed to real situations, learn by doing, exploring, investigating, generating hypotheses that can be confirmed or denied and then create new ones. And all this happens in a coherent and appropriate approach for every age group in early childhood education,”concludes Ms. Kennedy.

ELEMENTARY Escape Room and Entre Culturas Project Are Attractions on Children's Day Elementary school students celebrated Children's Day differently and in a fun way: while the 3rd grade class received classmates from another school for scavenger hunts and artistic activities, the other grades participated in a game created by 6th grade classmates. Mehir Desai and Colin Weaver’s classes created an Escape Room activity, an adventure game in which participants step into a scenario and need to work as a team to solve puzzles and mysteries to get out of the room within twenty minutes. The adventure was set up in four interconnected classrooms and each had a different storyline, with different decor and challenges - all planned and executed by 6th graders. “We teachers interfered as little as possible. The students exercised leadership and teamwork by creating and developing activities, decorating environments, and even producing short videos about the challenge,” explains Mr. Desai. After the riddles and mysteries were created, the teachers met with elementary principal Juliana Menezes to select the most appropriate storylines for each age group - two games were created, one for 1st and 2ndgrades and one for 4th and 5th grades, and on October 11th the challenges began. “Students were enthusiastic for a number of reasons: in addition to running a project from start to finish, they had the opportunity to present it to the younger classmates. It was a double celebration of Children's Day,”said Mr. Weaver. The activity was multidisciplinary, requiring students to have knowledge of math, language, science, engineering, performing arts, and fine arts. In addition, creativity, perception, curiosity, and teamwork skills were necessary for groups to be able to leave the room before time ran out.

Entre Culturas Project Promotes Meeting at Chapel

Also on October 11th, as part of the Entre Culturas Project, the 3rd grade classes welcomed their classmates from Henrique Dumont Villares State School for a morning of games, scavenger hunts, art activities, and a special lunch. To consolidate the exchange of cultures and habits, students from both schools - who knew each other only through letters - met in person and celebrated Children's Day at interaction stations specially prepared for the occasion. The goal of this project, coordinated by 3rd grade teachers Flavia Tacchini, Juliana Hanftwurzel, Melissa Kassner, and Ruby Sheets, is to form a communication network via letters between students at Chapel School, Henrique Dumont Villares State School (São Paulo), and Lecanto Primary School (Lecanto, Florida, United States). “Because we have an authentic audience, the Entre Culturas Project has a positive impact on our students' emotional memory. We get emotional together every time the cards a r r i v e , ” comments Ms. Tacchini. With each letter received the bond of friendship strengthens. "The Entre Culturas Project is a significant experience for 3rd graders because through the writing of letters friendships are formed between children from diverse cultures, b a c k g ro u n d s , a n d i d e n t i t i e s , " a d d s M s . Humanist Professional Paula Rodrigues de Castro | ES Portuguese teacher An educator with a graduate degree in Literacy, the new 1st and 2nd grade Portuguese teacher has fifteen years of teaching experience, notably in bilingual schools - such as Building, where she worked for eight years. However, Paula Rodrigues de Castro tried another profession before dedicating herself exclusively to teaching. With a degree in business, she worked for ten years in the financial market: “What made me change professions was the hostility of the financial market. I sought, in teaching, a more humanistic profession with social relevance,” she says. Ms. Castro comments that she was enchanted by Chapel's physical infrastructure, the quality of the materials, and especially the team's rapport. “This is an institution where we not only teach, but learn. We learn daily at school,” she adds. The teacher also says that she was fascinated by the grandeur and charity of events such as the Art Show, whose biennial edition begins this week. In her free time Ms. Castro plays various sports: crossfit, bodybuilding, and cycling are the main ones. She often rides long cycling routes in cities near the capital. Reading and travel are two other important activities in her life. After visiting several countries in South and North America, she will soon visit more distant destinations: “My honeymoon trip will be to Turkey and Israel,” announces the teacher who is getting married in December.

CHAPEL’S BEST UNDER 40: Julio T. Badi, 37 YEARS OLD. City where you live: Sao Paulo, SP (moving to New York) Period I study at Chapel: 7th (1996) to 12th grades (2001). What is your academic background? I have a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies and Economics from New York University. I have an MBA in Corporate Finance from FGV (Getulio Vargas Foundation). Briefly discuss your professional performance. I work at investment bank Goldman Sachs. I am responsible for the foreign exchange trading desk of the Americas. This includes all currency pairs of developed (euro, pound, etc.) and emerging (real, yuan, etc.) markets, either traded physically or as derivatives. The Goldman Sachs trading desk operates in two ways: 1) as a “market- maker ”, which means that we price transactions against clients (companies, funds, other banks, etc.) and 2) as a principal investor, when the bank uses equity to carry out operations and takes risk in order to improve the bank's bottom line as a whole. Your biggest life goal is: This question is difficult as my goals have been and will continue to change over time. At the beginning of my career I was focused on the professional side and obviously later on my goals moved to the more personal side. Initially, I always wanted to pursue a profession that constantly motivated me to keep growing day by day. The financial market, specifically treasury operations, eventually provided me with this, as it is an area where you are challenged on a day to day basis for a variety of reasons (global news, domestic news, new products, etc.). And at the same time you can objectively measure your performance, not only within the bank, but also in the market as a whole, and that fulfilled my competitive side. Once I found a profession, my goal was to be inside a company that would provide me with this challenge and at the same time one at which I could see myself working long term. In the last few years my goals have been much more balanced between professional and personal aspects, since nowadays my focus is to be a very present father in the life of my family and to be able to provide them with everything I had in my childhood.

Narrate your best memory of Chapel. The best memories I have involve sports and participating in Big 4. Not only because of the games/competitions themselves, but also the environment that encompasses the competitions. Athletes and the school mobilized to host the tournament and that was really amazing. One specific memory I have was at a Big 4 that happened at Graded School and the first indoor soccer game was against them at noon. The teachers had released all the students and the gym felt like a boiling cauldron. As always, the game was very even and well balanced, but in the end we managed to even the score and then get ahead with less than two minutes left. It looked like a movie scene, it was unbelievable! How has Chapel influenced your life? Specifically on the professional side, I would say that the discipline required to take the full IB course in the last two years at Chapel prepared me well for college and later for my career, in which having discipline is essential for one to succeed and have a lasting career in trading. And on the personal side, I see the influence of Chapel in my long lasting friendships. No matter if your friends from Chapel went to other universities, careers, countries, the bond remains.
