CHAPEL IB EXAM RESULTS ARE ABOVE WORLD AVERAGE

Chapel Class of 2018’s performance on IB Exams was the school's best score ever achieved and well above the world average. While the world average per subject was 4.9, Chapel's was 5.22. Our students' grades were above the world average in 14 of the 21 IB program subjects. Two students scored 40 points and one student achieved 41, given that 45 is the maximum possible score. Benjamin Vaughan, IB Coordinator, explains the excellent results are due to a series of factors that involve not only student motivation and readiness, but also academic and socioemotional support from teachers: 'We set high expectations and provide the necessary support so students can obtain good results - teachers are extremely focused on this goal’. Mr. Vaughan also states the Advisory Program (IB Flex Time) has contributed to the students' outstanding performance: in each group's weekly meeting, students discuss the IB program with their advisors, share their hopes and fears and receive personal organization, study and time management tips. 'During the IB exam season, teachers are available to study with students in small, focused groups'. These are the reasons why 86% of Chapel HS students receive their IB Diploma, whereas 79% of the students worldwide do.

BOOK FAIR CELEBRATES STORY DIVERSITY The 2018 Book Fair - "One World, Many Stories", allowed students to meet several authors and to engage into special activities for each age group from August 29th to September 1st. Pre I and Pre II students enjoyed storytelling with Andi Rubinstein's puppet theater. Daniel Munduruku, a nativeBrazilian anthropologist and writer from Pará, talked to Elementary School students about human values. 7th and 8th graders met novel and novelette writer Rodrigo Lacerda, a Jabuti Prize winner. 9th and 10th graders attended a lecture by photojournalist Joel Silva, who won several international Human Rights awards for his coverage of Libya’s protests during the Arab Spring. 9th graders also skyped with German writer and illustrator Cornelia Funke, author of the Inkworld series, whose worldwide best-seller book one, Inkheart, became a worldwide bestseller and was adapted to for the big screens. 11th and 12th graders talked to Angolan theologist and philosophy professor Santareno Augusto Miranda. Professor Santareno, as he is known where he lives in Paraná, described his experience in the Angolan army during the Angolan Civil War one of the HS topics of study - and explained how books changed his life. Book and stationary booths were highlights of the fair, as usual. STUCO's sebo (secondhand books) was a success and the Library Booth had over 2 thousand books in English for sale with generous discounts. On September 1st, Saturday, families engaged in several activities. The morning started with the traditional parents and children workshop, coordinated by the Art teachers. This year, families built paper sculptures. Meanwhile, the group Meninas do Conto walked amongst visitors telling stores to small groups as part of the Ao pé do Ouvido performance. TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS PARTICIPATE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Focusing on continuous professional development, over 30 Chapel staff members participated in on-site and online courses in Brazil and abroad over the months of June and July. According to superintendent Lucy Nunes, teachers are free to choose courses they wish to take to improve their skills. 'What sets us apart is that everyone commits to share their learning with their peers when they come back'. This share-out happens every Monday after school and during the afternoon of the last Monday of the month (half-day).

At the end of July, Ms. Nunes took part in the IB Global Conference 2018 in San Diego, California, celebrating the 50 years of the IB Program. 'I participated in an enriching program focused on individualized teaching". She also explained participants had a sticker tag which showed how long their schools have been part of the IB Program, and Ms. Nunes proudly wore a '+ than 30 years' tag, since Chapel has been part of the conference for 38 years.

HS and ES principals, Juliana Viola and Serena Geddes Aguilar, participated in the 'Creating an Effective School' course offered by the PTC (Principal’s Training Center) in Miami, Florida. The course focused on planning and management skills, embodying all scopes of the work of a school administrator. 'External professional development is very important, but the best part is to come back home and share our knowledge', states Ms. Viola. Ms. Aguilar claims that 'in these courses, the contact with professionals from all over the world who face the same situations as we do is extremely valuable'. DIGITAL CHAPEL 52

Also at PTC, Ms. Aguilar took a course on curricular alignment, and the Brazilian Program Coordinator, Ms. Paula Moro, on Assessment. In Fort Lauderdale (Florida), the Brazilian Program Director, Ms. Daniela Gattai, participated in the 'Transforming Schools Institute: Leading and Learning in Complex Systems' training, promoted by AAIE (Association for the Advancement of International Education). Also in Miami, Pre I teacher, Mayara Del Dotto, joined a PTC course on individualized teaching and ECEC principal, Ms. Juliana Menezes, participated in a training course for educational coordinators. The principal states it was a valuable experience because she had the opportunity to collaborate and learn more about the practical strategies that build an effective counseling program for an international community, such as helping students, parents and teachers transition to other schools or to different divisions within the school. 'We come back from these trainings energized and with many ideas to share. We soon begin to think and plan how we might apply what we have learned to innovate and transform education. We also come back confident that we are on the right path, offering the best practices in teaching to our students, parents and teachers', explains Ms. Menezes. The principals state Chapel professionals are often the ones who help others the most during the courses and conferences they attend. 'We support each other while problem-solving, since we talk to people who work at similar schools, but we can't help noticing how Chapel is ahead in several aspects', explains Ms. Aguilar. Courses around the world… This year, a few staff members participated in CTC (Counselor Training Center) courses in Rome, Italy. Our counselors, Marta Bidoli (HS) and Natália Carvalho (5th to 8th grade) took part of 'Counseling Across Cultures', while Cristiana Carvalho (ECEC to 4th grade), joined 'Getting to Solutions: the Heart of Counseling'. CAS Coordinator, Luciana Brandespim, participated in 'Coaching Skills for International School Leaders' and teacher Donald Campbell joined 'Teaching EAL in the Mainstream'. Other teachers took courses on their respective IB subjects: Erico Padilha in São Paulo, Kristin Smith in St. Pete Beach, Florida, Matthew Plain in Atlanta, Bruno D’Elia in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Jaisen Bell in Genoa, Italy.

Teachers Eliana Cardia, Luciana Honda, Vanessa Almeida and Flavia Tacchini also improved their knowledge and skills on spelling in Elementary School in a course promoted by Escola da Vila in São Paulo …and training at Chapel with Dr. Lee Ann Jung. On July 27th and 28th, all Chapel staff took part in professional development with specialist consultant in inclusion and assessment, and Lead Inclusion founder, Dr. Lee Ann Jung. After meeting Dr. Lee in a course, HS principal, Ms. Viola, managed to bring her to Chapel so that all teachers could have the opportunity to discuss assessment practices and individualized learning goals. 'At Chapel, we include students, this has always been our strength, but we also individualize assessment and instruction', explains superintended Lucy Nunes. According to ES principal Serena Aguilar, ‘We bring tools to teachers so they can work with all students’. ECEC principal Juliana Menezes mentioned that each school division focused on different aspects during Lee Ann's visit. ECEC teachers, for instance, engaged in dealing with discipline in an individualized way, while HS teachers discussed how to create a differentiated assessment plan according to specific standards, in alignment with the Standards-based Grading model. Ms. Aguilar has told us that Dra. Lee Ann will be back in January for a followup.

Your greatest goal in life is...

I'd say I don't have a single goal in life. On the contrary, I have several personal and professional goals. Among them, I intend to work at a major American sports league (NBA, NFL, MLS) and also to represent European soccer teams in their international marketing expansion (FC Barcelona, Juventus FC, Real Madrid). Tell us your best memory from Chapel

Since I am part of the world of sports, my best Chapel memories are playing JV and Varsity soccer and indoor soccer. All Chapel games and tournaments, like Little 8, Big 4 and Big 8, left a mark on me. I was lucky to have a successful sports career at Chapel and to celebrate many victories. I shared unforgettable thrills and experiences with my friends and coaches back then.

How has Chapel influenced your life?
Chapel provided me with academic and humanistic standards to face even the greatest personal and professional challenges around the world. Through education, I learned values that made me an honest person who is prepared to deal with differences and obstacles in life. In-classroom education provided became an asset in the job market as well, not only because of the theoretical knowledge, but also due to the rich cultural experience and the languages I learned
