Paul Eastwood Dyfodiaith
Until | Tan 10.03.19 Performance | Perfformiad 01.03 | 6pm Imagine a strange isolated island, where the Brythonic language (Welsh, Cornish and Breton) has remained alive — evolving throughout the centuries into something strange and unfamiliar. Dyfodiaith is an audio-visual work that interrogates the cultural context of the Welsh language in relation to minority languages spoken worldwide, bilingualism and common tongues. How will we speak to an unknown future? What will it look like? Working in collaboration with linguist Llŷr Titus and composer Samuel Barnes to score a haunting musical arrangement, the sung narrative serves as the main protagonist of the piece and is inspired by the Welsh language novel ‘Ebargofiant’ by Jerry Hunter and ‘Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd’ by Islwyn Ffowc Elis. Dyfodiath explores how language has the potential to manipulate our thoughts and actions by the lexis that we employ and how we might attempt to communicate to a future that hasn’t yet happened. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication featuring texts by Emily Butler and Miriam Elin Jones.
Dychmygwch ynys arunig ddieithr, lle mae’r Frythoneg (mam y Gymraeg, Cernyweg a Llydaweg) yn fyw — ac wedi esblygu drwy’r canrifoedd i fod yn rhywbeth od ac anghyfarwydd. Gwaith sain-weledol yw Dyfodiaith, sy’n cwestiynu cyd-destun diwylliannol y Gymraeg mewn perthynas â’r ieithoedd lleiafrifol a siaredir ledled y byd, dwyieithrwydd a ieithoedd cyffredin. Sut byddwn ni’n siarad â dyfodol anhysbys? Sut beth fydd y dyfodol hwnnw? Yr ieithydd Llŷr Titus a’r cyfansoddwr Samuel Barnes sy’n cydweithio i sgorio trefniant cerddorol iasol. Naratif a gaiff ei chanu yw prif nodwedd y darn, sydd wedi’i ysbrydoli gan ‘Ebargofiant’ gan Jerry Hunter ac ‘Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd’ gan Islwyn Ffowc Elis. Mae Dyfodiaith yn archwilio sut gall iaith ddylanwadu ar ein meddyliau a’n gweithredoedd yn seiliedig ar yr eirfa rydyn ni’n ei defnyddio, a sut gallwn ni geisio cyfathrebu â dyfodol sydd heb ddigwydd eto. Bydd cyhoeddiad i gyd-fynd â’r arddangosfa fydd yn cynnwys testunau gan Emily Butler a Miriam Elin Jones.

Freya Dooley: The song settles inside of the body it borrows Preview | Rhagolwg: 29.03, 6—8pm 30.03 — 28.04
Freya Dooley’s work combines literary and pop cultural references to create unstable semi-fictions and dense soundtracks. Often referring or returning to anxious states, her work attempts to articulate an inside turned out. ‘The Host’, a new multi-screen audio-visual work, takes Mark Twain’s 1876 short story A Literary Nightmare as it’s departure point, in which the protagonist is tormented by an earworm jingle and only finds relief by passing this affliction on to an unwitting audience. Elaborating on the real and imagined experiences of a reluctant host to dreamlike states, stubborn parasites and repeated riffs, Dooley explores the effects of listening on our emotional and physical states. “The song settles inside of the body it borrows” deviates from existing literary narratives to explore the potential and limitations of the voice, consumed bodies and occupied minds.
Mae gwaith Freya Dooley yn cyfuno cyfeiriadau diwylliannol pop a llenyddol i greu darnau ansefydlog rhannol ffuglennol a thraciau sain dwys. Gan gyfeirio neu ddychwelyd yn aml at gyflyrau o bryder, mae ei gwaith yn ceisio cyfleu’r tu mewn wedi’i droi am allan. Mae ‘The Host’, gwaith newydd sain-weledol amlsgrîn, yn defnyddio stori fer Mark Twain o 1876, A Literary Nightmare, fel man cychwyn, lle mae’r prif gymeriad yn cael ei boenydio gan dincial parhaus, a’r unig beth sy’n ei ryddhau o’r sŵn yw trosglwyddo’r cystudd i gynulleidfa ddiarwybod. Gan ehangu ar brofiadau gwirioneddol a dychmygol gwesteiwr amharod o gyflyrau breuddwydiol, parasitiaid styfnig a riffiau ailadroddus, mae Freya’n archwilio beth yw effaith gwrando ar ein cyflwr emosiynol a chorfforol. Mae’r gân yn sefydlogi yn y corff mae’n ei fenthyg, ac yn gwyro oddi wrth y naratifau llenyddol presennol i archwilio potensial a chyfyngiadau’r llais, cyrff defnyddedig a meddyliau wedi’u meddiannu.
About the artist Freya Dooley is an artist based in Cardiff. She works with writing, moving image, sound and performance. She is interested in the voice as a conduit between sound and language, thought and body. Forthcoming solo exhibitions include ‘Somewhere in the crowd there’s you’ at Eastside Projects in Birmingham. Running concurrently with ‘The song settles inside of the body it borrows’, both projects are supported by the Arts Council of Wales. Freya also shares a collaborative practice with artist Cinzia Mutigli, and their performance ‘Being Sharon’, about their lives intertwining with their favourite soap operas, was commissioned by Experimentica in 2018. CORNELIA BALTES
Until | Tan 24.03.19 Cornelia Baltes’ brightly coloured paintings combine simplicity with humour and playfulness. Real-world observations are stripped back to their simplest form; creating new abstract patterns and rhythms. Their bold graphic qualities often spill out over the surface and on to the walls and surrounding architecture in which they inhabit. For Chapter, Baltes has created a new sitespecific work in the bustling Caffi Bar – two giant cartoon hands dangle down from the glass skylights above, their fingers stretching towards the floor whilst another hand protrudes around the smaller wall, claiming the space as their own. Mae paentiadau llachar a lliwgar Cornelia Baltes yn cyfuno symlrwydd â hiwmor ac asbri chwareus. Caiff arsylwadau’r byd go iawn eu datgelu yn eu ffurf symlaf; gan greu patrymau a rhythmau haniaethol newydd. Mae eu nodweddion bras a graffig yn aml yn goferu o arwyneb y gwaith ar y waliau a’r bensaernïaeth sydd o’u cwmpas. Mae Baltes wedi creu gwaith newydd penodol i’r safle ar gyfer ein Caffi Bar bywiog – dwy law enfawr gartŵn yn hongian o ffenestri’r to uchod, eu bysedd yn estyn tuag at y llawr wrth i law arall ymwthio o gwmpas y wal fach, gan hawlio’r gofod iddyn nhw’u hunain.

Since 2012 Rob has chosen a specific theme for his shows and challenged himself to create an hour of material about each subject. These shows have given rise to sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe as Rob continues to build his audience through his unique use of words and humour. After his appearances on the Russell Howard Hour, BBC at the Edinburgh Festival and Channel 4’s Random Acts, Rob now looks to talk to as many people as possible with The Talk Show.

Chekhov’s greatest play deals with hope, despair and change in the years preceding the Russian Revolution. Lopakhin, an up-and-coming businessman wants to sell the Cherry Orchard and develop the land for holiday cottages. Mme Ranevsky, owner of the estate, resists change, not realising her precarious financial position. Trofimov, the revolutionary student, sees an entirely different path for Russia. Mae drama enwocaf Chekhov yn ymdrin â’r gobaith, yr anobaith, a’r newid yn ystod y blynyddoedd cyn Chwyldro Rwsia. Mae Lopakhin, dyn busnes ar ddechrau ei yrfa, eisiau gwerthu’r Berllan Geirios i ddatblygu’r tir i gael bythynnod gwyliau. Mae Madam Ranevsky, perchennog yr ystâd, yn gwrthwynebu’r newid heb sylweddoli ei bod mewn sefyllfa ariannol ansicr. How To Be Brave written by Siân Owen

Determined that her young daughter will never lose the powerful, fierce magic she arrived into the world with, Katie sets off on a mission to create an instruction manual titled, How to Be Brave. This brand-new, one-woman play follows Katie’s journey as she rides her BMX around Newport to find what she’s really made of. By listening to the unheard voices of the city itself, she begins to question what the women who have gone before can teach her about how to be brave in this confusing, quickchanging world we live in. Experience a love story from writer Siân Owen, to Newport — the city that made her. Beth allen ni ei gyflawni pe baen ni’n manteisio ar rym y disgleirdeb a’r sêr sydd y tu mewn i ni? Yn benderfynol na fydd ei merch ifanc yn colli’r hud pwerus a thanbaid a ddaeth gyda hi i’r byd, mae Katie yn mynd ati i greu llawlyfr o’r enw How to Be Brave. Mae’r ddrama un cymeriad newydd sbon hon yn dilyn taith Katie wrth iddi yrru ei BMX o gwmpas Casnewydd i ganfod ei gwir ddewrder. Drwy wrando ar leisiau cudd y ddinas ei hun, mae’n dechrau cwestiynu beth allai ddysgu gan y menywod a fu er mwyn bod yn ddewr yn y byd dryslyd hwn sy’n prysur newid.
