Paul Eastwood Dyfodiaith — Singing to an unknown future 09.02—10.03.19 Preview | Rhag-ddangosiad 08.02 6—9pm Performance | Perfformiad 01.03 | 6pm

Imagine a strange isolated island, where the Brythonic Celtic language (Welsh, Cornish and Breton) has remained alive - evolving throughout the centuries into something strange and unfamiliar. Dyfodiaith is an audio-visual work that interrogates the cultural context of the Welsh language in relation to minority languages spoken worldwide, bilingualism and common tongues. How will we speak to an unknown future? What will it look like? Working in collaboration with linguist Llŷr Titus and composer Samuel Barnes to score a haunting musical arrangement, the sung narrative serves as the main protagonist of the piece and is inspired by the Welsh language novel ‘Ebargofiant’ by Jerry Hunter and ‘Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd’ by Islwyn Ffowc Elis. Dyfodiath explores how language has the potential to manipulate our thoughts and actions by the lexis that we employ and how we might attempt to communicate to a future that hasn’t yet happened. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication featuring texts by Emily Butler and Miriam Elin Jones.

About the artist Paul Eastwood is a Wrexham-based artist with a practice that explores art as a form of social production and cultural storytelling. Working widely across text, sculpture, performance, video, drawing, printmaking and textiles, Paul creates narrated histories and futures to investigate how place and objects can communicate cultural identities. Dychmygwch ynys arunig ddieithr, lle mae’r Frythoneg (mam y Gymraeg, Cernyweg a Llydaweg) yn fyw - ac wedi esblygu drwy’r canrifoedd i fod yn rhywbeth od ac anghyfarwydd. Gwaith sain-weledol yw Dyfodiaith, sy’n cwestiynu cyd-destun diwylliannol y Gymraeg mewn perthynas â’r ieithoedd lleiafrifol a siaredir ledled y byd, dwyieithrwydd a ieithoedd cyffredin. Sut byddwn ni’n siarad â dyfodol anhysbys? Sut beth fydd y dyfodol hwnnw? Yr ieithydd Llŷr Titus a’r cyfansoddwr Samuel Barnes sy’n cydweithio i sgorio trefniant cerddorol iasol. Naratif a gaiff ei chanu yw prif nodwedd y darn, sydd wedi’i ysbrydoli gan ‘Ebargofiant’ gan Jerry Hunter ac ‘Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd’ gan Islwyn Ffowc Elis. Mae Dyfodiaith yn archwilio sut gall iaith ddylanwadu ar ein meddyliau a’n gweithredoedd yn seiliedig ar yr eirfa rydyn ni’n ei defnyddio, a sut gallwn ni geisio cyfathrebu â dyfodol sydd heb ddigwydd eto. Bydd cyhoeddiad i gyd-fynd â’r arddangosfa fydd yn cynnwys testunau gan Emily Butler a Miriam Elin Jones.

Ynglŷn â’r artist Artist o Wrecsam yw Paul Eastwood, y mae ei ymarfer yn archwilio celf fel ffurf ar gynhyrchiad cymdeithasol a chwedleua diwyllianol. Gan weithio’n eang ar draws testunau, cerfluniau, perfformiadau, fideos, arlunio, creu printiau a thecstiliau, mae Paul yn creu sawl hanes a sawl dyfodol a gaiff eu hadrodd i archwilio sut gall lle a gwrthrychau gyfleu hunaniaethau diwyllianol. Astudiodd Eastwood yn yr Academi Frenhinol ac yn Ysgol Gelf Wimbledon, ac fe enillodd y Wobr Gelf NOVA Cymru gyntaf yn 2018. Ymhlith ei arddangosiadau diweddar, mae: ‘NOVA’, Academi Frenhinol Cambria, Conwy, Canolfan Gelfyddydau Aberystwyth ac Arcade, Caerdydd (2018); ‘Segrgrair’, Oriel Wrecsam, Preswylfa ac Arddangosfa Litmus, Oriel Davies, y Drenewydd; Ysgol Haf Rhaglen Unit(e), g39, Caerdydd (oll yn 2017); ‘Editions commission (Paul Eastwood a Lucy Woodhouse)’, Oriel Focal Point; ‘Feast of Fools’, TAP, Southend (ill dau yn 2016) a ‘Severed, returning your love’, Oriel Focal Point (2015) paul-eastwood.net Paul Eastwood, Iaith Bwystnon, Film Still, 2019

ART IN THE BAR | CELF YN Y BAR

CORNELIA BALTES

Until | Tan 24.03.19 Cornelia Baltes’ brightly coloured paintings combine simplicity with humour and playfulness. Real-world observations are stripped back to their simplest form; creating new abstract patterns and rhythms. Their bold graphic qualities often spill out over the surface and on to the walls and surrounding architecture in which they inhabit. For Chapter, Baltes has created a new site-specific work in the bustling Caffi Bar – two giant cartoon hands dangle down from the glass skylights above, their fingers stretching towards the floor whilst another hand protrudes around the smaller wall, claiming the space as their own. Mae paentiadau llachar a lliwgar Cornelia Baltes yn cyfuno symlrwydd â hiwmor ac asbri chwareus. Caiff arsylwadau’r byd go iawn eu datgelu yn eu ffurf symlaf; gan greu patrymau a rhythmau haniaethol newydd. Mae eu nodweddion bras a graffig yn aml yn goferu o arwyneb y gwaith ar y waliau a’r bensaernïaeth sydd o’u cwmpas. Mae Baltes wedi creu gwaith newydd penodol i’r safle ar gyfer ein Caffi Bar bywiog – dwy law enfawr gartŵn yn hongian o ffenestri’r to uchod, eu bysedd yn estyn tuag at y llawr wrth i law arall ymwthio o gwmpas y wal fach, gan hawlio’r gofod iddyn nhw’u hunain.

LITTLE WANDER

Tony Law

Tony Law: A Lost Show 01.02 | 8pm The King of post-modern nonsense, Tony is taking his funniest, most meaningful show to date on tour after selling out his entire run at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe with A Lost Show. A mind-changing, comedy-art, laugh-affirming experience you’ll never forget. Expect accents, observations, shouting, clowning, shadows, shadow puppets, a space bear puppet, music, bad music, falling and white face paint. This show finds the vulnerability in us all. Watch him and through laughter — rise, happier. You cry, with laugh. ‘What was that!?’ ‘I loved that’. Then you smile to yourself. ‘Tony, you grande dickhead, you making me thinking while you do ‘up’ voice shouting ‘n’ clownsing and then, somehow, through idiocy and your bones of funny – Tone, I know what you mean’. Tony has appeared on Have I Got News For You, The Alternative Comedy Experience, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. His radio credits include Arts Club with Will Gompertz (5Live), Tony Law: 21st Century Adventurer, Tony Law’s Surreal Guide To Surreal Comedy, Loose Ends and Infinite Monkey Cage.

Yn frenin nonsens ôl-fodernaidd, mae Tony’n mynd ar daith gyda’i sioe fwyaf doniol a mwyaf ystyrlon eto, ar ôl gwerthu pob tocyn i’w sioeau yng Ngŵyl Cyrion Caeredin gyda A Lost Show. Dyma gelf-comedi sy’n argyhoeddi ac yn codi calon, a phrofiad i’w gofio. Disgwyliwch acenion, arsylwadau, gweiddi, dylni, cysgodion, pypedau cysgod, pyped arth ofod, cerddoriaeth, cerddoriaeth wael, cwympo a phaent wyneb gwyn. Mae’r sioe yma’n amlygu’r gwendid ym mhob un ohonon ni. Gwyliwch — a chodwch, yn hapusach, dan chwerthin. Chwarddwch nes eich bod yn crio. ‘Beth oedd hwnna!?’ ‘Ro’n i’n caru hwnna’. Yna fe fyddwch chi’n gwenu wrthoch chi eich hunan. ‘Tony, y ffŵl, ti’n gwneud i fi feddwl wrth i ti wneud llais ‘uchel’ yn gweiddi ac yn clownio, ac yna, rywsut, drwy dy wiriondeb a dy esgyrn doniol – Tony, rwy’n gwybod beth rwyt ti’n feddwl’. Mae Tony wedi bod ar Have I Got News For You, The Alternative Comedy Experience, 8 Out Of 10 Cats a Never Mind The Buzzcocks. Mae wedi bod ar y radio hefyd, gan gynnwys Arts Club with Will Gompertz (5Live), Tony Law: 21st Century Adventurer, Tony Law’s Surreal Guide To Surreal Comedy, Loose Ends ac Infinite Monkey Cage. £12 | £11 | £10 Age | Oedran 14+

BLUE

05.02—16.02 | 7.30pm (excludes | ac eithrio 10.02) 07.02 + 09.02 | 14.02 +16.02 | 2.30pm & 7.30pm Created by | Crëwyd gan Rebecca Jade Hammond Written by | Ysgrifennwyd gan Rhys Warrington “ And every so often I find something. Washed up on the shore. Something lost. Something old. Something broken. Something in need of repair. And I’d bring it back here. I’d bring it home.” In a house a few miles from the Carmarthenshire coast a mother battles to keep her family together. But when an old acquaintance unexpectedly arrives, he awakens her children’s need to escape. “ BLUE is about a lost, isolated and abandoned Welsh family; burdened with a responsibility that they never asked for. What is this responsibility? That’s the central mystery at the heart of ‘BLUE’ that not only stems from a personal place but, I believe, is one of the most pressing issue that the world faces today. I hope the play not only shines a light on this but also begins to provoke a much-needed conversation.” - Rhys Warrington (Writer) A new Welsh play produced by Chippy Lane Productions, a theatre company championing Welsh and Wales-based creatives. “A bob yn hyn a hyn dw i’n ffeindio rhywbeth. Wedi’i gario i’r lan. Rhywbeth colledig. Rhywbeth hen. Rhywbeth toredig. Rhywbeth sydd angen ei drwsio. A bydda i’n dod ag e’n ôl yma. Bydda i’n dod ag e adre.” Mewn tŷ rai milltiroedd o arfordir Sir Gaerfyrddin, mae mam yn brwydro i gadw ei theulu gyda’i gilydd. Ond pan fo rhywun o’i gorffennol yn cyrraedd yn annisgwyl, mae e’n deffro angen ei phlant i ddianc. “ Mae BLUE wedi’i lleoli yng Nghymru ac yn ymwneud â theulu coll, unig sydd wedi’i adael; sydd â baich cyfrifoldeb na ofynnon nhw amdano. Beth yw’r cyfrifoldeb yma? Dyma yw’r dirgelwch canolog wrth galon ‘BLUE’, sy’n tarddu nid yn unig o le personol ond, yn fy marn i, dyma un o’r materion pwysicaf y mae’r byd yn eu hwynebu heddiw. Dw i’n gobeithio y bydd y ddrama nid yn unig yn taflu goleuni ar hyn, ond yn dechrau sgwrs sydd wir ei hangen.” - Rhys Warrington (Dramodydd) Drama newydd wedi’i chynhyrchu gan Gynyrchiadau Chippy Lane, cwmni theatr sy’n hyrwyddo pobl greadigol o Gymru ac sy’n byw yng Nghymru. £14 | 12

14.02 | 2pm The Hands of Leonardo Da Vinci – Guy Rooker A recent biography of Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson does not neglect the paintings, but the author is more fascinated by the notebooks with their 7,200 pages of sketches and ideas. Isaacson’s premise is that Leonardo’s scientific interests nourished his art, and that only through the work he put into dissecting corpses and studying muscles was he capable of painting the Mona Lisa’s smile. The talk reviews the way which Leonardo investigated the form and function of the hand, and how he used this knowledge to depict the hand as a form of expression. Nid yw bywgraffiad diweddar Leonardo da Vinci gan Walter Isaacson yn esgeuluso’r paentiadau, ond caiff yr awdur ei swyno gan ei lyfrau nodiadau a’u 7,200 tudalen o sgetsys a syniadau. Man cychwyn Isaacson yw bod diddordebau gwyddonol Leonardo yn cyfoethogi ei gelf, ac mai dim ond oherwydd ei waith yn datgymalu cyrff marw ac yn astudio’r cyhyrau yr oedd yn gallu paentio gwên Mona Lisa. Mae’r sgwrs yn adolygu’r ffordd roedd Leonardo yn archwilio ffurf a gweithrediad y llaw, a sut defnyddiodd ei wybodaeth i gyfleu’r llaw fel ffurf o fynegiant.
