Megan Cope & Helen Johnson Until / Tan 24.09.17 Helen Johnson and Megan Cope interrogate notions of identity, power and social history to explore the complex colonial relationship between Australia and Britain. Using the medium of painting, Helen Johnson weaves and overlays historical and contemporary signifiers to establish points of tension and reflection. Using large-scale paintings mounted to metal structures through the gallery, she creates an economy of images within and between paintings; some are given precedence, others made barely legible. The paintings are the size of theatre backdrops, in excess of the body, becoming sets before which to act. Inspired by the artist’s experience in obtaining her ‘Certificate of Aboriginality’, Megan Cope’s video work The Blaktism is a high-energy performance and ritual that sees a young female ‘fair-skinned Aborigine’ undertake a sacred ceremony in which she receives the rite of authenticity validated by authorities ever present in the Australian cultural landscape. The sacred ceremony itself results in a satirical cultural assimilation dance party whereby all Australians are liberated, celebrated equally and transgressively renewed through physical and gestural adjustments. The Blaktism seeks to challenge audience members by showing the absurd nature of racial classification in the 21st century. About the artists Helen Johnson is an artist based in Melbourne. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Warm Ties’, ICA London (2017); ‘Barron Field’, Glasgow International (2016); ‘Slow Learners’, Château Shatto, Los Angeles and ‘Cafe Fatigue’, Sutton Gallery, Melbourne (both 2015). She has recently exhibited work as part
of ‘Painting. More Painting’, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art; ‘In my absence’, Jocelyn Wolff, Paris; and ‘Pleasure and Reality’, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. In 2015 she published a book titled ‘Painting is a Critical Form’, developed from a PhD in Fine Art completed at Monash University where she is also a lecturer. Johnson is represented by Sutton Gallery in Melbourne, Château Shatto in Los Angeles and Pilar Corrias in London. Megan Cope works with painting, video, sculptural installation and site-specific commissions. A Quandamooka woman from North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, her work explores the intricate relationship between environment, geography and identity. Maps feature prominently in Cope’s work; she draws on toponymy (the study of place names) to probe myths and methodologies around colonisation. Cope’s work has been exhibited in Australia and internationally including at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art; Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts; Gold Coast City Art Gallery; MONA FOMA, Hobart; ARC Biennial, Brisbane; Cairns Regional Art Gallery; Koori Heritage Trust, Melbourne; City Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand; Para Site Contemporary Art Space, Hong Kong; Careof Art Space, Milan; the Australian Embassy, Washington and Next Wave Festival (2014). Cope won the 2015 Western Australian Indigenous Art Award, and her work was curated into an exhibition at Musées de la Civilisation in Québec, Canada. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the ICA, as part of ICA Touring, funded by Arts Council England. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

Mae Helen Johnson a Megan Cope yn archwilio syniadau am hunaniaeth, pŵer a hanes cymdeithasol er mwyn ystyried y berthynas drefedigaethol gymhleth rhwng Awstralia a Phrydain. Trwy gyfrwng paentio, mae Helen Johnson yn plethu ac yn cyflwyno arwyddion hanesyddol a chyfoes er mwyn creu cyflwr o densiwn myfyrgar. Â phaentiadau mawrion wedi’u gosod ar strwythurau sy’n estyn ar hyd yr oriel, mae hi’n creu hierarchaeth oddi mewn i a rhwng ei phaentiadau; mae rhai yn cael blaenoriaeth ac eraill o’r braidd yn weladwy. Mae’r paentiadau tua maint cefnlenni theatr: maent yn fwy o faint na’r corff dynol ac yn troi’n setiau i bobl actio o’u blaen. Wedi’i ysgogi gan y ffaith iddi dderbyn ei ‘Certificate of Aboriginality’, mae gwaith fideo Megan Cope, ‘The Blaktism’, yn berfformiad egnïol a defodol sy’n dangos merch ifanc ‘Aborijini groen-olau’ yn cynnal seremoni sanctaidd. Mae hi’n cymryd rhan mewn defod ddilysu dan oruchwyliaeth awdurdodau penodol yn nhirwedd ddiwylliannol Awstralia. Mae’r seremoni sanctaidd ei hun yn arwain at barti dawns (dychanol) a chymathiad diwylliannol sydd yn rhyddhau, yn dathlu ac yn gosod pob Awstraliad ar yr un lefel. Cânt eu hadnewyddu drwy gyfrwng addasiadau ffisegol ac ystumiol. Mae ‘The Blaktism’ yn herio aelodau’r gynulleidfa trwy ddangos natur abswrd ´ gwahaniaethu yn ôl hil yn yr 21ain ganrif.

James Richards: Music for the gift Until / Tan 26.11.17 Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, Venezia We’ve shared in previous magazines about how proud we are to have curated James Richards’ ‘Music for the Gift’, the Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice 2017 exhibition for the world renowned La Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition can be seen in Venice until 26 November before it returns to Wales in early 2018. Another important part of our commitment to Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice is to create a programme of professional development for Welsh and Walesbased artists and curators. Building on the success of previous years, this year we are delighted to be working in partnership with Arts Council of Wales, G39 and the School of Art and Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University to deliver an expanded invigilator programme. This supports the practice of eleven early-career artists and curators and seven students who each have the chance to work in Venice for between four and eight weeks. Whilst there they will supervise, monitor and maintain our exhibition providing a vital interface with visitors, alongside working on their own personal creative projects. Invigilator Plus provides important professional development opportunities and the artist-led organisation g39 were commissioned by Chapter to develop and deliver a unique training programme for the team of invigilators. The Invigilator Plus team are part of the G39 programme UNIT(e), an alternative art school taking place in Cardiff this year. This studio based research and development opportunity for artists and curators features a tailored programme of mentoring sessions and ongoing support for their practice. More information on our invigilators — including their individual blog posts — and the exhibition in Venice can be found at www.experiencewalesinvenice.org James Richards: Music for the gift is at the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, 450 Castello 30122, Venice until 26 November. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am-6pm (Closed Monday).
Rydym wedi sôn mewn cylchgronau blaenorol am ein balchder o fod wedi curadu ‘Music for the Gift’ gan James Richards, arddangosfa Cymru yn Fenis 2017, sy’n rhan o arddangosfa fyd-enwog La Biennale di Venezia. Bydd yr arddangosfa i’w gweld yn Fenis tan 26 Tachwedd cyn iddi ddychwelyd i Gymru tua dechrau 2018. Rhan bwysig arall o’n hymrwymiad i brosiect Cymru yn Fenis yw’r rhaglen o ddatblygiad proffesiynol i artistiaid a churaduron sy’n gweithio yng Nghymru. Yn seiliedig ar lwyddiant blynyddoedd blaenorol, rydym yn hynod falch eleni o allu gweithio mewn partneriaeth â Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, G39 ac Ysgol Gelfyddyd a Dylunio Prifysgol Fetropolitan Caerdydd er mwyn darparu rhaglen oruchwylio estynedig. Mae’r rhaglen yn cefnogi gwaith un ar ddeg o artistiaid a churaduron ar ddechrau eu gyrfaoedd a saith o fyfyrwyr sydd yn cael cyfle bob un i weithio yn Fenis am gyfnodau’n amrywio o bedair i wyth wythnos. Yn Fenis, byddant yn goruchwylio, yn monitro ac yn gweithio yn ein harddangosfa, lle byddan nhw’n bwynt cyswllt pwysig i ymwelwyr. Byddant hefyd yn gweithio ar eu prosiectau creadigol eu hunain. Mae rhaglen Invigilator Plus yn darparu cyfleoedd am ddatblygiad proffesiynol ac fe dderbyniodd sefydliad artistiaid g39 gomisiwn gan Chapter i ddatblygu a chyflwyno rhaglen hyfforddi unigryw i’r tîm o oruchwylwyr. Mae tîm Invigilator Plus yn rhan o raglen UNIT(e) g39, ysgol gelf amgen a gynhelir yng Nghaerdydd eleni. Mae’r cyfle hwn i artistiaid a churaduron gael ymchwilio a datblygu eu gwaith yn cynnwys rhaglen arbennig o sesiynau mentora a chefnogaeth barhaus. Mae mwy o wybodaeth am ein goruchwylwyr - gan gynnwys eu blogiadau unigol – a mwy am ein harddangosfa yn Fenis ar gael yn www.experiencewalesinvenice.org. Cyflwynir arddangosfa James Richards, Music for the gift, yn y Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, 450 Castello 30122, Fenis tan 26 Tachwedd. ART IN THE BAR / CELFYDDYD YN Y BAR
Derived from the written 01.09—29.10.17 ‘Derived from the written’ shows the work of Henriette Heimdal and Leah Meredith. Both artists explore the idea of revealing a written story through their chosen medium. Using photography, Heimdal portrays figures from ancient Norwegian folk law in uncanny ways; drifting through the Welsh and Norwegian landscape, she shines her flash on the traces of the natural and industrial world to tell the stories of these eerie figures. Meredith’s paintings appropriate images from press cuttings around the topic of refugees, highlighting each individual’s story. By her portrayal of these people as lone figures she takes them away from all of the written assumptions and catastrophic imagery that we see in mass media and captures an intimate and sincere portrait of humanity. A panel discussion will take place 22 September 2-6pm. The discussion will include Caitlin Davies, and both artists plus invited guests. The event is free but booking is essential ‘Derived from the written’ has been curated by Caitlin Davies, Curatorial Volunteer at Chapter. The exhibition is part of her final assessment for her Masters Degree in Curating at University of West England.
Mae ‘Derived from the written’ yn cyflwyno gwaith Henriette Heimdal a Leah Meredith. Mae’r artistiaid yn archwilio’r syniad o ddatgelu stori ysgrifenedig yn eu dewis gyfryngau. Trwy gyfrwng ffotograffiaeth, mae Heimdal yn portreadu ffigurau o lên gwerin hynafol Norwy a hynny mewn ffyrdd annisgwyl; mae hi’n symud trwy dirwedd Cymru a Norwy, ac yn taflu goleuni ar olion y byd naturiol a diwydiannol er mwyn adrodd hanesion cymeriadau iasol. Mae paentiadau Meredith yn seiliedig ar ddelweddau o doriadau papurau newydd a straeon am ffoaduriaid, ac yn ceisio amlygu hanes pob unigolyn. Wrth bortreadu’r bobl hyn fel ffigurau ar eu pennau’u hunain, mae hi’n eu gwahanu o’r rhagdybiaethau ysgrifenedig a’r ddelweddaeth drychinebus a welwn yn y cyfryngau torfol. Mae hi’n cyflwyno portreadau diffuant ac agosatoch o’u dynoliaeth. Bydd yna drafodaeth banel ar 22 Medi, 2-6pm. Bydd y drafodaeth yn cynnwys Caitlin Davies, y ddau artist ynghyd â gwesteion arbennig eraill. Mae’r digwyddiad yn rhad ac am ddim ond bydd angen i chi gadw lle. Cafodd ‘Derived from the written’ ei churadu gan Caitlin Davies, Gwirfoddolwr Curadurol yn Chapter. Mae’r arddangosfa yn rhan o’i hasesiad terfynol ar gyfer Gradd Meistr mewn Curadu ym Mhrifysgol Gorllewin Lloegr.

Benny
Benny Hill, the celebrated comedian, writer, actor, and singer, passed away on the 20th April 1992 at the age of 68. His body lay undiscovered in his sparsely decorated flat for two days. During these two days, while largely ostracized in the country of his birth, his television programmes were watched by an estimated one billion people around the planet. Performed by Liam Tobin and using Benny Hill’s unique style to re-evaluate his life and work, ‘Benny’ a new play by Owen Thomas and directed by Gareth John Bale, revisits these lost two days at the end of the life of the lad himself.

Soft Subs & AD screenings / Is-deitlau Meddal + Disgrifiadau Sain
Our new dementia friendly screenings are a great opportunity for people living with dementia to enjoy a film in a relaxed friendly environment. The screenings themselves are shown without adverts or trailers and have slightly brighter lighting throughout the auditorium. Where possible we will screen the film with soft subtitles and audio description available. Following the films there is a chance to socialise with tea and coffee. The screenings are open to anyone living with dementia i.e. those diagnosed with and their family, friends, neighbours or carers. We also welcome charity workers, medical professionals, care home staff, social workers and support staff. Our Dementia Friendly screenings and events are supported by the Rayne Foundation and the Dunhill Medical Trust. £4.50 including a cup of tea or coffee
Audio Description and Soft Subtitles are available on many of our films, however, the information may change before going to print so please check our website for details. chapter.org/access
Mae ein dangosiadau newydd sy’n addas i bobl â dementia yn gyfle gwych i fwynhau ffilm mewn awyrgylch cyfeillgar a hamddenol. Cyflwynir y dangosiadau eu hunain heb hysbysebion neu ragolygon o ffilmiau newydd ac fe fydd yr awditoriwm ychydig yn llai tywyll nag arfer. Pan fydd yn bosib, byddwn yn dangos ffilmiau gydag is-deitlau meddal a disgrifiadau sain. Ar ôl y dangosiadau, bydd yna gyfle i gymdeithasu dros baned o de neu goffi. Mae’r dangosiadau hyn ar agor i bobl sy’n byw gyda dementia h.y. i’r rheiny sydd wedi cael diagnosis o dementia ynghyd ag aelodau o’u teuluoedd, ffrindiau, cymdogion neu ofalwyr. Bydd yna groeso cynnes hefyd i weithwyr elusennol, gweithwyr meddygol proffesiynol, staff cartrefi gofal, gweithwyr cymdeithasol a staff cymorth. Cefnogir ein dangosiadau a’n digwyddiadau i Bobl â Dementia gan Sefydliad Rayne. £4.50 gan gynnwys paned o de neu goffi You may notice this logo attached to certain films and performance. F–Rating is a new rating for films and performances directed by women, written by women and / or with women on screen and on stage in their own right. Fe sylwch chi efallai ar y logo hwn ger manylion rhai ffilmiau a pherfformiadau. Mae’r F yn dynodi ffilmiau a pherfformiadau wedi’u cyfarwyddo gan ferched, wedi’u hysgrifennu gan ferched neu / ac sydd yn cynnwys rhannau canolog i ferched ar y sgrin neu ar y llwyfan.

Relaxed Screenings / Dangosiadau Hamddenol
These screenings are recommended to anyone who might benefit from the subtle alterations made to the auditorium environment. Films are screened with the lights raised slightly, the volume turned down, and with the trailers and adverts removed. People can feel free to move around the cinema or make a noise as they feel comfortable. Chapter staff will be on hand to help if you need additional assistance. Unallocated seating. Regular ticket prices apply. Mae’r dangosiadau hyn wedi eu bwriadu ar gyfer unrhyw un a fyddai’n elwa ar newidiadau cynnil i awyrgylch yr awditoriwm. Caiff ffilmiau eu dangos â goleuadau ychydig yn fwy llachar nag arfer, bydd lefel y sain yn is ac ni ddangosir trelars neu hysbysebion. Bydd rhwydd hynt i bobl godi a symud o gwmpas y sinema neu i wneud sŵn fel y dymunant. Bydd staff Chapter wrth law i helpu os bydd angen cymorth pellach arnoch. Dim seddi cadw. Pris tocyn arferol.

14.09 The Drama Behind the Taj Mahal / Stori ddramatig y Taj Mahal, Lecturer / Darlithydd Oliver Everett The talk is based on the Islamic manuscript, the Padshahnama, which is the unique official history of the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. He is best remembered for the building of the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his favourite wife Mahal Mumtaz. The Padshahnama vividly depicts the dramatic events of the Emperor’s reign, and the paintings tell the story of the intrigues of court life as well as the Coronation, bloody battles and hunting scenes. The manuscript is held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Visitors £6 (on the door, space permitting)
Mae’r sgwrs hon yn seiliedig ar lawysgrif Islamaidd y Padshahnama, sef hanes swyddogol yr Ymerawdwr Mughal, Shah Jahan. Cysylltir ei enw ef ag adeilad godidog y Taj Mahal a godwyd fel beddrod i’w hoff wraig, Mumtaz Mahal. Mae’r Padshahnama yn ddarlun byw o ddigwyddiadau dramatig teyrnasiad yr Ymerawdwr ac mae’r darluniau yn cyfleu’r cynllwynio yn y llys yn ogystal â’r Coroni, y brwydrau gwaedlyd a’r helfeydd. Cedwir y llawysgrif yn y Llyfrgell Frenhinol yng Nghastell Windsor. Ymwelwyr £6 (wrth y drws, yn ddibynnol ar le)
