Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice James Richards: Music for the gift 24.02—26.05

Commissioned for the Venice Biennale in 2017, James Richards’ Music for the gift returns to Wales for its UK premiere. James Richards’ carefully constructed installations involve sculptural, acoustic and curatorial considerations to create complex, multi-dimensional works of extraordinary intensity. His work makes use of a growing bank of material that includes film soundtracks, works by other artists, camcorder footage, percussion and archival ephemera. Richards’ exhibition presents a suite of works produced for the Wales in Venice exhibition including Migratory Motor Complex (2017), a six-channel electro-acoustic installation created in collaboration with students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and What weakens the flesh is the flesh itself (2017), an extended video mediation on desire, transition, the body and mortality. The video is made with collaborator Steve Reinke. The presentation in Wales also features Not Blacking Out, Just Turning The Lights Off (2011). Tapping into seamless image streams proliferated by the mass media, the work teeters between the sensual realm and something more anxious and violent, pointing toward the experience of existing in a constant, at times oppressive, dialogue with technology. James Richards: Music for the gift is curated by Hannah Firth and managed by Chapter, Cardiff. Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice was commissioned by the Arts Council of Wales and Wales Arts International with support and collaboration from the Welsh Government and British Council. The UK tour of Wales in Venice and Scotland + Venice is made possible with Art Fund support. The presentation of this exhibition in Wales is generously supported by The Colwinston Charitable Trust and the Henry Moore Foundation. www.experiencewalesinvenice.org @walesinvenice www.facebook.com/walesinvenice

Please Note: Migratory Motor Complex will be shown in the Seligman Stiwdio at Chapter between 23.02 and 10.03 only.

Mae Music for the gift gan James Richards, a gomisiynwyd ar gyfer Biennale Fenis 2017, yn dod i Gymru ar gyfer première Prydeinig. Mae gosodiadau bwriadus James Richards yn cynnwys elfennau cerfluniol, acwstig a churadurol sy’n cyfrannu at weithiau aml-ddimensiynol o ddwyster rhyfeddol. Mae ei waith yn gwneud defnydd o fanc cynyddol o ddeunydd sy’n cynnwys traciau sain, gweithiau gan artistiaid eraill, deunydd ‘camcorder’, offerynnau taro a deunydd archif amrywiol. Mae arddangosfa Richards yn cyflwyno cyfres o weithiau a gynhyrchwyd ar gyfer arddangosfa Cymru yn Fenis yn benodol, gan gynnwys Migratory Motor Complex (2017), gosodiad electro-acwstig chwe sianel a grëwyd ar y cyd â myfyrwyr o Goleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru, a What weakens the flesh is the
flesh itself (2017), gwaith fideo estynedig am ddyhead, trawsnewid, y corff a marwolaeth. Cafodd y gwaith hwnnw ei greu ar y cyd â Steve Reinke. Mae’r cyflwyniad yng Nghymru hefyd yn cynnwys Not Blacking Out, Just Turning The Lights Off (2011). Mae hwnnw’n ymwneud â ffrydiau di-ben-draw y cyfryngau torfol ac yn pendilio rhwng byd synhwyraidd a rhywbeth mwy aflonyddol a threisgar, y profiad o fod mewn perthynas barhaol — a gormesol ar adegau — â thechnoleg. Cafodd arddangosfa James Richards: Music for the gift ei churadu gan Hannah Firth a’i rheoli gan Chapter. Cafodd arddangosfa Cymru yn Fenis ei chomisiynu gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Chelfyddydau Rhyngwladol Cymru gyda chefnogaeth a chydweithrediad Llywodraeth Cymru a’r Cyngor Prydeinig. Cyflwynir taith Brydeinig ‘Cymru yn Fenis’ ac ‘Yr Alban + Fenis’ gyda chymorth y Gronfa Gelf. Derbyniodd yr arddangosfa hon yng Nghymru gefnogaeth hael gan Ymddiriedolaeth Elusennol Colwinston a Sefydliad Henry Moore. www.experiencewalesinvenice.org @walesinvenice www.facebook.com/walesinvenice

ART IN THE BAR / CELFYDDYD YN Y BAR

Minyoung Choi: On Water Under Snow Until / Tan 04.03.18 Minyoung Choi’s paintings are dominated by her memories and her imagination. At first glance the dreamlike scenes seem to suggest a narrative; figures are seen sharing food together in a forest clearing, or on bent knees making offerings. However it is the items that are placed in these settings that are of more importance to the artist. Choi collects images of objects that interest her or bring her pleasure; images from her imagination, from history and the everyday. When positioned in these landscapes the objects take on a new kind of symbolism, making them exist once again, together at the same time. Through the process of painting, rebuilding and reimagining she aims to establish a connection to landscapes and places that she longs for.

Mae paentiadau Minyoung Choi yn cael eu cymell gan ei hatgofion a’i dychymyg. Ar yr olwg gyntaf, mae’r golygfeydd breuddwydiol fel petaent yn awgrymu naratif; gwelir ffigurau’n rhannu bwyd gyda’i gilydd mewn coedwig, neu ar eu pengliniau yn cynnig offrymau. Ond yr eitemau a osodir yn y lleoliadau hyn sydd o bwys gwirioneddol i’r artist. Mae Choi yn casglu delweddau o wrthrychau sydd o ddiddordeb iddi neu yn peri pleser iddi — delweddau o’i dychymyg neu o fywyd bob dydd. Ar ôl cael eu gosod yn y tirweddau hyn, mae’r gwrthrychau’n magu math newydd o symbolaeth, sydd yn gwneud iddynt fodoli unwaith eto, ar y cyd â’i gilydd. Yn ystod y broses o baentio, ailadeiladu ac ailddychmygu, mae’r artist yn ceisio creu cysylltiad â thirweddau a mannau y mae hi’n dyheu amdanynt.

Biography Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1989. She graduated from the Slade School of Art in 2017 and now lives and works in London. Recent and upcoming exhibitions include; ‘The Glichrist-Fisher Award’, Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London (2018); ‘Other Spaces/Slade Summer Residency’, Slade School of Fine Art, London, ‘FLOCK’, GX gallery, London, ‘Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize Exhibition’, The Mall Galleries, London (all 2017); ‘Forwards + Backwards’, Dona Laura’s House, Lisbon, Portugal, ‘Beep2016 Wales International Painting Prize: This must be the place I never wanted to leave’, Swansea College of Art & Undegun, Wrexham (both 2016)

Bywgraffiad Ganwyd Choi yn Seoul, De Korea yn 1989. Graddiodd o Ysgol Celfyddyd Gain y Slade yn 2017 ac mae hi bellach yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Llundain. Mae ei harddangosfeydd diweddar yn cynnwys Gwobr Glichrist-Fisher, Oriel Rebecca Hossack, Llundain (2018); Preswyliad Slade/Other Spaces, Ysgol Celfyddyd Gain y Slade, Llundain; ‘FLOCK’, Oriel GX, Llundain; Arddangosfa Gwobr Lynn Painter-Stainers, The Mall Galleries, Llundain (2017); ‘Forwards + Backwards’, Tŷ Dona Laura, Lisbon, Portiwgal; Gwobr Beintio Ryngwladol Cymru ‘Beep2016: This must be the place I never wanted to leave’, Coleg Celf Abertawe & Un deg un, Wrecsam (y ddwy yn 2016)
